This study explored how adult speakers mediate triadic interactions involving young children and generative AI (GPT), focusing on discourse strategies and meaning negotiation. Four five-year-old children and their primary caregivers, acting as adult interlocutors, participated in structured GPT-based sessions. The adults actively interpreted, reformulated, and scaffoldedᅠthe children's utterances and the GPT's responses. Through inductive transcript analysis, nine caregiver strategies were identified and categorized into three functional domains: information adjustment (e.g., summarizing, rephrasing), meaning expansion (e.g., repetition, interpretation), and discourse organization (e.g., scaffolding, framing). These strategies shaped interactional flow and enabled meaningful participation by the children. Rather than functioning as a neutral tool, GPT acted as a quasi-participant whose outputs required adult mediation to be developmentally appropriate. The findings position adult speakers as co-constructors of meaning, aligning with Vygotsky's zone of proximal development, Bruner's language acquisition support system, and Gumperz's contextualization theory. This study underscores the socially situated nature of child-AI interaction and argues that the developmental value of generative AI depends not on its autonomous functionality but on the interpretive work of responsive adults. The findings hold implications for designing AI-mediated educational discourse and enhancing language socialization in early childhood.
Shin, Yu-Ri. 2015. “Nonverbal Discourse Strategies of Korean TV Talk Show Hosts: Focus on ‘Nodding’ and ‘Bending’”. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea 23(1). 115~143. As our speech builds on verbal as well as nonverbal elements, we perform discourse strategies through both of them in interaction. This study takes a closer look at the nonverbal strategies performed during talk show discourse as seen on Korean television. By taking into account the sociocultural context on which both talk show hosts and guests mutually rely in their interaction, the paper examines how this shared pool of sociocultural resources affects the discourse strategies of the hosts. This holds particularly true for Korean TV talk shows, since the social relationships, from which the discourse participants draw, is defined and reflected in the shows' semi-institutional character. Throughout the show, the host makes use of nodding and bending on an interpersonal, semantic, and structural level. In this order, such discursive functional devices serve a distinct politeness strategies and can, therefore, be determined as discursive strategies.
This article explores how the conflicting ideological positions of the news media in two different countries are reflected in their perceptions of the postwar situation in Iraq and become encoded in lexical choices and strategies in relation to the cognitive and socio-political dimension of the media. The target data were collected from the on-line news reports posted on the respective web sites of the two networks: the Fox News Channel in the U.S. (foxnews.com) and the English-language version of Al-Jazeera in Qatar (english.aljazeera.net). This study adopts an interdisciplinary theoretical framework of critical discourse analysis for ideological representations in news discourse by integrating labeling strategies in information structure from critical discourse scholars (Tomlin et al. 1997; Fairclough 1992, 1995). In particular, the lexical choices and their cognitive and discursive strategies are qualitatively and quantitatively examined by focusing on the labels on the War against Iraq and postwar Iraq. As a result, this study seeks to verify the idea that the ideological differences between the two news networks result in their own strategically and informationally structured labels on Iraqi situations in each news text, keeping and reproducing the separating concept of Self and Other according to each network's socio-cultural identity and ideology.
The present study aims to examine the types of professors" discourse strategies that are used by Spanish native professors in the classes given to Korean university students. For this purpose, we recorded 15 hours of professors" lectures in Spanish of 6 compulsory subjects on a video tape and transcribed them. After the collection of the data, we identified 17 strategies and their representative examples. On the basis of this, we recorded frequency of each discourse strategy. In this way, we were able to identify the most frequently used strategies, and tried to explain the cause of their use taking the educational situation into consideration. Because we were concerned about the use of strategies for each of the 6 subjects: grammar, conversation, culture, vocabulary, composition, and reading comprehension, we determined by analysing the frequency the particular discourse strategy that were used in each individual subject.
