        To control an external parasitic mite, a honey bee line possessing high hygienic behavior (HHB) against an external parasitic mite, Varroa destructor, has been bred in South Korea and an assessment method has been necessitated to diagnose HHB line from the low hygienic behavior (LHB) line. Thus, in this study, we developed single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers from whole genome sequencing of each 20 worker bees from HHB and LHB lines of A. mellifera ligustica (Hymenoptera: Apidae). An average of 319,445,977 sequence reads was mapped to the known A. mellifera reference genome (an average of 87.46%). In 2,316,128 and 3,266,756 SNPs from each HHB and LHB line, an average of 93.6% and was located in the intergenic spacers and introns, whereas, the remaining 6.4% was located in the genic region, respectively. Among them 20 SNPs that were fixed at each line possessing within-individual homozygosity were selected and each four SNPs were used to diagnose the two honey bee lines either by typical PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism method or allele-specific PCR. The remaining six SNPs had the size difference, enabling relatively easy differentiation between the two honey bee lines on typical agarose gel and another remaining six SNPs only has sequence difference including SNP sites. Thus, these SNP markers can be used to diagnose the honey bee line with HHB from LHB line against V. destructor.

        This study examined how adult native speakers of Korean prosodically structure their speech during spontaneous story telling. It asked participants to produce a spontaneous story from a picture book in L1 Korean. Participants’ phonological phrasing (via pause) was analyzed with reference to eight hierarchical syntactic structures defined in the study. The results suggested three-level hierarchy in phonological structure in spoken Korean: between sentences > between independent clauses > between a dependent clause and the matrix clause = any within-clause boundaries. Korean speakers paused the longest prior to starting a new sentence. They paused statistically significantly shorter between two independent clauses (e.g., coordinate clauses and adverbial clauses), and even shorter between a dependent clause (e.g., complement clauses and relative clauses) and the matrix clause. Interestingly, however, the last type of clausal boundaries, i.e., between interdependent but separate clauses, did not differ from any of the observed within-clause boundaries with respect to intonation structure marked by pauses. These results are consistent with the literature as to across-clause boundaries, but contra the traditional prediction that syntactic hierarchical structure may be mapped onto phonological structure: clausal boundaries are prosodically treated the same as within-clausal boundaries. Crosslinguistic and educational implications are discussed.

        This exploratory research focuses on variety-seeking behavior in the e-commerce (EC) apparel market. The author introduces the causes of switching behavior through exploring different attributes such as product category, price range, and brand. The author discusses the definition of variety-seeker within relatively high price, high involvement, and less frequency category. Next, the author proposes a practical methodology to find different types of variety-seekers from transaction data and customer databases. Finally, the author identifies the characteristics of variety-seekers, including mobile device behavior and psychographics of customers. Having reviewed previous research, in this study, the author focuses on: (1) research of variety-seeking that leans toward the low price, low-involvement, and high-frequency category, (2) define and distinguish variables of variety-seeking, especially in fashion and EC websites, and (3) use of mobile channels in variety-seeking. Researchers and practitioners have studied variety-seeking behavior since the latter half of the 20th century. One of the earliest studies of variety-seeking behavior is by Tucker (1964), who proposed the exploratory behavior concept. Since then, variety-seeking behavior has been extensively researched, and it is considered the antithesis of brand loyalty. As introduced by Assael (1987), in his matrix on buying behavior types, variety-seeking occurs as a low-involvement behavior and in a relatively low-priced category (e.g., Inman, 2001). Therefore, the research on variety-seeking in a higher priced category, like fashion, is a relatively novel approach, when compared to other categories of consumer goods. Meanwhile, there are many variables in general transaction data and customer databases, such as product category and group level (large, medium, and small), brand, product attribute (color, size, gender), price, time, and store. However, much of the previous research considered brand-switching as a clue for distinguishing variety-seeking. Thus, there is little research that has considered every database variable, and defined variety-seeking in the fashion category. Recently, new research focusing on the apparel industry and EC websites has been published. For example, Ko, Kim, and Lee (2009) discussed mobile shopping for fashion products, where they proposed the concept of information-seeking. However, their research was based on questionnaires. For this review, discussing and developing a methodology to analyze variety-seeking in the EC fashion industry was necessary. Distinguishing variety-seekers in this area might be useful for retailers or manufacturers for category management or line expansion (e.g., Inman 2001). This study uses transaction data from fashion EC sites obtained from the 2016 Data Analytics Competition, which was sponsored by the Joint Association Study Group of Management Science. There were over 550,000 purchasing transactions, and approximately one million records of units purchased from April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2016. The number of customers was approximately 100,000, out of which around 3,000 answered the psychographic questionnaire. Every product was classified into 24 large groups and 226 small groups. The data covered approximately 6,500 brands across 900 shops. In this study, the author conducts three analyses. First, the author introduces the types of variety-seeking behavior into the data, which produces a distribution that resembles the shape of the Pareto distribution in terms of sales or frequency. Second, the author discusses how to distinguish variety-seekers. Brand-switching is the most important criterion of variety-seeking behavior; however, the author includes concepts such as price-seeking, category expansion, and purchase interval. Finally, the author introduces characteristics of variety-seekers with demographic and psychographic variables in order to discuss the factors that determine variety-seekers. For example, using large group switching and sales, the author distinguishes the variety-seekers (over 3,000 customers, that is, 3%). From analyzing demographic and psychographic variables, the author, then, attempts to specify the reasons for variety-seeking in the fashion category. Finally, the author confirms the differences between mobile device and PC channels. In the age of customer experience management, use of mobile device has an important role. The author demonstrates the relationship between mobile device use and variety-seeking behavior. However, this research has certain limitations. First, this exploratory research does not adopt a rigorous hypothesis testing approach. The second limitation pertains to data—if the author had web access log data and real channel purchase data, other indicators could have been calculated. However, despite these limitations, this research makes theoretical and practical contributions. First, using fashion EC website data, variety-seeking behavior could be observed in relatively high price and high-involvement categories. Second, the author proposes a simple method to distinguish variety-seekers. EC sites, in general, may have similar databases; therefore, this research has application possibilities. Third, the author explains how psychographic characteristics and mobile channel usage of variety seekers could be beneficial for further research on variety-seeking behavior.

        L2 synonyms (and other related words) that are undifferentiated (i.e., are translated as the same word) in learners’ L1 are among the most difficult lexical items for L2learners to grasp. How to help students learn the appropriate use of these words has been a great challenge for L2 teachers. Drawing on recent research in corpus linguistics and corpus-based language teaching, this paper strives to show that corpus analysis can effectively differentiate synonyms and help L2 students successfully learn the appropriate use of the words in a synonym set. The paper begins with a brief overview of research on synonyms and their learning/use. Then using four sets of English synonyms/related words that are not differentiated in Korean, it discusses, with specific examples of learning activities and exercises, how corpus analysis and its results can be used to help learners differentiate these difficult words and grasp their usage patterns. The paper concludes with a summary of both the benefits and challenges of such a teaching approach and some strategies for dealing with the challenges.

        콩과(Fabaceae) 작물 해충인 팥나방(Matsumuraeses phaseoli)과 어리팥나방(M. falcana) (나비목: 잎말이나방과)은 형태적으로 매우 유사하여 종 구별이 힘든 것으로 알려져 있다. 본 연구에서는 PCR-SSP(PCR with Sequence Specific Primers) 방법으로 두 종을 빠르고 정확하게 구별할 수 있는 판별법을 찾고자 두 종의 미토콘드리아 시토크롬 옥시다제 I(mtCOI) DNA 부분영역(439 bp)의 염기서열을 해독하였다. 그리고 다른 나방 종의 mtCOI 염기서열과 함께 나열하여 비교한 후 팥나방과 어리팥나방에서 종 특이적으로 차이가 나는 단일 뉴클레오티드를 프라이머의 3ʹ말단으로 하는 염기서열 특이 프라이머 조합을 만들었다. PCR 산물들을 전기영동 한 결과, 어리팥나방은 245 bp, 팥나방은 409 bp와 245 bp의 특이적 밴드 패턴을 보여 두 종을 구별할 수 있었다.

        식품의 방사선조사 기법은 지난 40여년간 세계적으로 체계적인 연구가 수행되면서 그에 대한 안전성과 기술적 타당성이 입증되고 있음에도 불구하고 아직까지도 제한적으로 이용되고 있는데 이의 주된 이유는 방사선조사 식품에 대한 소비자의 수용도를 확신할 수 없기 때문이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 방사선조사 식품에 대한 올바른 정보를 소비자들에게 제공하기 위한 기초자료를 얻기 위해 방사선조사 식품에 대한 소비자들의 구입의도 및 구입의도에 따른 집단을 구분하는데 영향을 미치는 변수들을 분석하였다. 본 연구를 통해 얻어진 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 우리 나라 소비자들의 식품의 안전성 및 식품의 신선도 보존에 관한 관심도는 매우 높았다. 방부제, 잔류농약, 식중독, 식품의 변패 및 식품의 신선도 보존 등의 5가지 항목 중 식품의 변패에 대한 관심도가 특히 높게 나타났으며, 그 다음으로는 잔류농약, 식중독의 순으로 관심이 많았다. 둘째, 우리 나라 소비자들의 방사선조사 식품에 대한 인지도는 대체로 낮았으며 특히 연령이 많거나 학력이 낮은 경우 방사선조사 식품에 대해 인지도가 낮은 것으로 나타나 이들을 대상으로 한 소비자교육이 보다 활성화되어야 할 필요가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 방사선조사 식품에 대한 수용 정도에 있어서는 응답자의 1/3-4/5가 방사선조사 식품의 구입에 대한 찬성이나 반대의 의사표시를 보이는 대신에 관망적인 자세를 취하고 있었다. 방사선조사 기법이 제공하는 혜택 중에서 농약 처리 후 식품에 농약이 잔류되는 것과는 다르게 방사선조사 식품에 방사선이 잔류하지 않는 경우, 방사선조사 식품을 구입할 의도가 많은 것으로 나타났다. 즉 식품의 안전성과 관련하여 많은 소비자들이 식품에서 농약의 잔류성분에 대해 우려를 하고 있는 것으로 나타났으므로 앞으로 이를 대체할 수 있는 하나의 방법으로 식품에 방사선조사 처리 기법이 활용될 것으로 예상되며, 이를 위해서는 방사선조사 식품의 안전성이 뒷받침되어야 할 것으로 보인다. 셋째, 방사선조사 식품의 구입의도 정도에 따른 집단을 구분하는데 영향을 미치는 변수를 살펴본 판별분석의 결과, 식품의 안전성에 대한 관심도, 혁신성에 대한 자아평가, 유기농작물에 대한 지불의도, 그리고 방사선조사 식품의 인지도는 방사선조사 식품의 구입의도를 구분하는 집단을 설명하는 데 있어 대체로 영향력이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 반면에 월가계소득은 5개의 판별분석에서 한 번도 유의하지 않은 것으로 나타나서 방사선조사 식품의 수용정도를 구분하는 데 있어 영향력이 없는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 소비자의 혁신성 정도가 방사선조사 식품의 수용도를 구분하는데 있어 중요한 변수라는 사실은 방사선조사 식품의 기법이나 그러한 식품이 갖는 혜택과 관련된 정보를 혁신적 소비자나 조기수용자에게 우선적으로 제공하는 것이 효과적임을 알려주고 있다. 최근 국제적으로 방사선조사 식품의 이용이 확대되고 있으며, 수출입 식품에 대한 방사선 처리가 증가되고 있는 국제환경 속에서 소비자들에게 방사선조사 식품에 대한 올바른 정보를 효과적으로 제공함으로써 그들의 식품구입 의사결정에 도움을 주는 것이 매우 필요하다. 더욱이 본 연구결과 우리 나라 소비자들은 방사선조사 식품에 대한 낮은 인지도를 가지고 있어 소비자로서의 알권리를 제대로 누리지 못하고 있는 것으로 나타나 앞으로 국내에서 방사선조사 식품이 상업적으로 널리 보급되기에 앞서 방사선조사 식품에 대한 소비자교육이 활발하게 이루어질 필요가 있다고 본다.

        Background : Codonopsis lanceolata is a flowering perennial climber. The roots are used as medicinal materials or vegetables. C. lanceolata is distributed in India and East Asia such as China, Japan as well as Korea. Recently, demand for C. lanceolata is increasing as a healthy food. In South Korea, this plant is widely cultivated in Gangwon-do province. Although, C. lanceolata is one of the most important medicinal plants in Korea, it is easy to be confused with other species of the same genus. Simple sequence repeat (SSR) marker is a powerful tool for distinguish specific species. In addition, there are many studies that show species-specific polymorphisms in chloroplasts SSR. In this study, we developed chloroplast SSR markers that can distinguish C. lanceolata from 6 Codonopsis species. Methods and Results : We collected 6 Codonopsis species include C. lanceolata. and extrated DNA using CTAB method. The DNA was diluted to 10 ng/㎕ and kept at –20℃. We designed the primer sets using CLC Main Workbench based on chloroplast DNA SSR region of C. lanceolata. PCR was performed using three independent plants for each species. Conclusion : We designed six primer sets from six SSR regions of C. lanceolata cpDNA. All of the primer sets amplified the amplicon effectively. Two of the 6 primer sets had polymorphism. We could distinguish C. lanceolata from 6 Codonopsis species using two primer sets.

        Background : Angelica gigas is a monocarpic perennial plant. A. gigas, also called DangGui or Korean Angelica, is a major medicinal herb used in Asian countries such as Korea, Japan and China. In Korea, we are using the roots of A. gigas. but, Chinese using Angelica sinensis and Japanese using Angelica acutiloba with the same name 'DangGui'. The biggest problem in the use of A. gigas is the confusion with A. acutiloba or A. sinensis. This confusion can cause an medical accident or lack of pharmacological ingredients. In this study, we developed chloroplast InDel markers that can distinguish A. gigas, A. acutiloba or A. sinensis. Methods and Results : We collected 14 Angelica plant samples including A. gigas, A. acutiloba and A. sinensis and extrated DNA using CTAB method. The DNA was diluted to 10 ng/㎕ and kept -20℃. We designed the primer sets using CLC Main Workbench based on chloroplast DNA InDel region of between A. gigas and A. acutiloba. PCR were performed on the 14 Angelica plant samples including A. gigas, A. acutiloba and A. sinensis (5 repeats each). Electrophoresis was performed using fragment analyzer automated CE system. We designed 6 InDel primer sets and the primer sets amplified the amplicons effectively. Three of the 6 primer sets showed polymorphism. Conclusion : We could distinguish A. gigas, A. acutiloba, and A. sinensis using 2 newly developed InDel markers.

        Background : Angelica gigas is a monocarpic biennial or short lived perennial plant. A. gigas, also called Dang Gui or Korean Angelica, is a major medicinal herb used in Asian countries such as Korea, Japan and China. In Korea, we are using the roots of A. gigas, but, they are using Angelica sinensis in China and Angelica acutiloba in Japan to obtain many active constituents. The biggest problem in the using of A. gigas would be the confusion with A. acutiloba or A. sinensis. These three plants can't be distinguished by appearance. And the constituent ratios of the three plants are different. This confusion can cause an accident or the pharmaceutical effects do not meet the expectations. In this study, we developed chloroplast SSR markers that can distinguish A. gigas, A. acutiloba and A. sinensis. Methods and Results : We collected A. gigas, A. acutiloba and A. sinensis. and extrated DNA using CTAB method. The DNA was diluted to 10 ng/㎕ and kept -20℃. We designed the primer sets using CLC Main Workbench based on chloroplast DNA SSR region of A. gigas. PCR were performed on the three angelica plant samples (in 5 repeat). Conclusion : We made five primer sets from five SSR regions of A. gigas cpDNA. All of the primer sets amplified the amplicon effectively. Two of the 5 primer sets had polymorphism. We can distinguish A. gigas, A. acutiloba, and A. sinensis using the 2 primer sets

        The term euphemism is not polysemous. However it is frequently employed in a 2-way form; sometimes as a channel to convey Speaker's innocuous indirect message (euphemism) and in other times as a device to hide Speaker's malicious intention (doublespeak). The former is intended to promote politeness from Speaker to Hearer and the other is a manipulated form to secure Speaker‘s unduly profit at the cost of Hearer. This paper discusses what distinguishes benign euphemism from malicious doublespeak. This writer probes into the similarities and dissimilarities between euphemism and doublespeak by comparing Allen & Burridge (1991) and Lutz (1989) and proposes Leech's (1987) cost-benefit module as a possible criterion for telling benign euphemism from malicious doublespeak. Overall this research tries to shed light on how language can be manipulated to Speaker's purposes.
