Background: While efforts have been made to differentiate fall risk in older adults using wearable devices and clinical methodologies, technologies are still infancy. We applied a decision tree (DT) algorithm using inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor data and clinical measurements to generate high performance classification models of fall risk of older adults. Objects: This study aims to develop a classification model of fall risk using IMU data and clinical measurements in older adults. Methods: Twenty-six older adults were assessed and categorized into high and low fall risk groups. IMU sensor data were obtained while walking from each group, and features were extracted to be used for a DT algorithm with the Gini index (DT1) and the Entropy index (DT2), which generated classification models to differentiate high and low fall risk groups. Model’s performance was compared and presented with accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. Results: Accuracy, sensitivity and specificity were 77.8%, 80.0%, and 66.7%, respectively, for DT1; and 72.2%, 91.7%, and 33.3%, respectively, for DT2. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the fall risk classification using IMU sensor data obtained during gait has potentials to be developed for practical use. Different machine learning techniques involving larger data set should be warranted for future research and development.

PURPOSES : The initial smoothness of concrete pavement surfaces must be secured to ensure better driving performance and user comfort. The roughness was measured after hardening the concrete pavement in Korea. When the initial roughness is poor, relatively large-scale repair works, such as milling or reconstruction must be performed. Hence, a method to measure the roughness of the concrete pavements in realtime during construction and immediately correct the abnormal roughness was developed in this study. METHODS : The profile of a concrete pavement section was measured at a construction site using sensors that were attached to the tinning equipment of the paver. The measured data included outliers and noise caused by the sensor and vibration of the paving equipment, respectively, which were further calibrated. Consequently, the calibrated data were input into the ProVAL program to calculate the roughness based on the international roughness index (IRI). Additionally, the profile of the section was re-measured using another method to verify the reliability of the calculated IRI. RESULTS : The profile data measured at the concrete pavement construction site were calibrated using methods, such as overlapped boxplot outlier removal and low-pass filtering. The outlier data from the global positioning system (GPS), which was installed to identify the construction distance, was also calibrated. The IRI was calculated using the ProVAL program by matching the measured profile and GPS data, and applying the moving average method. The calculated IRI was compared to that measured using another method, and the difference was within the tolerance. CONCLUSIONS : A method to measure the roughness of the concrete pavements in real time during construction was developed in this study. Hence, the performance of concrete pavements can be improved by enhancing the roughness of the pavement considerably using the aforementioned method.

When developing a new motor, a high-speed load test is performed using dynamo equipment to calculate the efficiency of the developed motor using the collected dynamo data. When connecting the test motor and the dynamo used as a load, abnormal noise and vibration may occur in the test equipment rotating at high speed due to misalignment of the connecting shaft and looseness of the connection, which may lead to a safety accident. In this study, three vibration sensors are attached to the surface of bearing parts of the test motor to measure the vibration value, and statistics such as kurtosis, skewness, and percentiles are obtained in order to clearly express the pattern of the measurement data. With these statistics, machine learning models are developed. The developed model in this way can be used as a diagnostic system that can detect abnormal conditions of the motor test equipment through monitoring the motor vibration data during the motor test.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to analyze the crack and vertical behaviors of a continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) under three different steel ratios (0.6%, 0.7%, and 0.8%) using field measurement data acquired from isolated concrete slabs with transverse cracks. METHODS : Using an LVDT and a crack gauge, CRCP behavior data are acquired by segmenting a concrete slab into multiple sections based on the similarity in the longitudinal steel ratio of each section. To examine the vertical behavior of CRCP based on longitudinal steel ratios, three field experiments are conducted in February, May, and September three years after project completion. The minimum and maximum ambient temperature data for each section are acquired during the experiments. Using the data acquired, the vertical and crack behaviors of CRCP with 0.6% of longitudinal steel ratios are analyzed. In addition, the effect of the steel ratio on the vertical behavior as well as seasonal vertical behaviors are examined. RESULTS : Analysis of the vertical behavior of concrete slabs with a 0.6% steel ratio shows that the minimum vertical displacement occurred at the center of the slab, whereas a significant vertical displacement is detected on the edges of the slab. Based on examining vertical displacements formed along the direction of transverse cracks, it is observed that the vertical behavior is prominent around the shoulders, whereas similar vertical behaviors are observed at the center and joints of the slab. Furthermore, it is discovered that the minimum crack occurred at the center of the transverse cracks, whereas the maximum crack occurred on the shoulders and joints. Furthermore, it appears that the daily displacements of the vertical behavior at the center of the slab constitute approximately one-half of the daily displacements on the joints. Based on the results of vertical behavior as a function of the longitudinal steel ratios, it is discovered that steel ratios of 0.7% and 0.8% yield the most prominent vertical behaviors around the edge of the shoulder in the winter, spring, and fall seasons. The seasonal deviations of the vertical behaviors based on the measuring positions of the longitudinal steel ratios appear less significant at the center of the slab than those on the shoulder. In particular, for the slab with a steel ratio of 0.8%, subtle vertical behaviors are observed at the center. It is discovered that the seasonal deviation of the vertical behavior measurements varying by the measuring locations of the steel ratios appears less significant at the center of the slab than at the shoulder, and that it decreases with the steel ratio. CONCLUSIONS : CRCP generates cracks on the slab; however, they are managed by rebars in the CRCP. This study reveals that the major vertical and crack behaviors of CRCP occur around the shoulders than at the center of the CRCP slab. Therefore, new methods for managing cracks on the CRCP shoulder should be developed to improve the performance of CRCP. It is hoped that the results presented herein will be useful for the advanced analysis of CRCP behaviors.

There is a need to reduce fuel consumption in order to reduce GHG emissions from the transport sector, which accounts for large volumes. In this study, the fuel consumption rate can be compared with the method using the CAN communication data in the engine controller through the OBD II interface and the direct measurement method using the fuel flow meter. For this purpose, we measured the fuel consumption rate in the engine controller and the fuel flow meter with the chassis dynamometer, and confirmed the reliable data of the fuel flow meter. As a result, the fuel consumption rate in the engine controller and the fuel consumption rate in the fuel flow meter were directly measured. After that, the running test was carried out using the chassis dynamometer and the reliability of the fuel consumption rate using the flow meter was confirmed.

Measuring body size with a 3D scanner can reduce inter-measurer variability and provide better accuracy compared to using a traditional methods of measurement (Park, Nam, & Park, 2009). Many size measurement projects (or studies) that measure body size established a size measurement method prior to the development of a 3D scanner and automatic size measurement programs that produce 3D virtual body size measurements (Park, &Nam, 2012). Size data measured through an automatic size measurement program are more accurate and have a lower variability that is more appropriate for body measurements (Han, & Nam, 2004; Nam, Choi, Jung, & Yun, 2004). However, this method is limited to healthy subjects who can maintain a correct posture in a 3D scanner. It is difficult for the elderly to maintain the correct posture for body measurements in ‘Basic Human Body Measurements for Technological Design’ of ISO 7250(1997). Body measurement definitions are based on vertical and horizontal directions consequently, it is hard to measure those with a bent body type even if they stand in a correct posture. Most body measurement items are automatically measured in vertical and horizontal directions because current automatic size measurement programs utilize algorithms based on typical body measurement definitions. The size measurement method based on a vertical and horizontal directions tends to have a problem for elderly individuals with a bent body type who have difficulty maintaining a correct posture for 3D scanning as defined in ISO 7250(1997)(Ashdown, & Na, 2008).This study analyzes the problem of present auto-measurement programs that use elderly’s 3D body scan data. We conducted a comparative analysis of elderly’s body sizes using an auto-measurement program from virtual 3D body scan data and direct measurement with traditional measurement methods. We establish 34 typical body size measurements for the use of data from 464 males and 472 females (total 936) between the ages of 70 to 85. For error analysis, data separated to normal values and outliers compared with ISO 20655(2003). ISO 20685 defines the accuracy of extracted measurements by classification and measurement type (segment lengths, body height/breaths/depth, large/small circumferences, and head/hand/foot dimensions). The majority of outliers for the male and female body height type was “height”. Total number of persons with outliers for Height’s data was 603; consequently, 64.4% of subjects (elderly group of 70-85 yrs.) could not maintain a correct posture when scanning. Other data also had many errors from inaccurate measurement postures. A total of 72.3% of males and 70% of females have incorrect values in small circumferences. The segment lengths’ error data was 76.5% of males and 75% of females; in addition, the head dimension’ outliers were 87% for both male and female subjects. Especially 57.46% of males had incorrect data, while 74.67% of females had a type of large circumference. Female chest circumference had significant errors due to sagging breasts. The differences identify with a correlation between type of large circumference (chest, hip, under bust, waist, waist of omphalion) and gender. There were several correlations between the many measurement errors because values over 70% of data have outliers; however, each measurement type has properties in regards to correlation. A substantial positive correlation was found between all measurements (except hip circumference) in the type of large circumference; in addition, one-way ANOVA indicated that the measurements influenced height and were statistically significant. Outliers found in height data for the elderly’s were more likely to have errors in the type of large circumference. The type of body height indicated a strong correlation and statistical significance between the axilla height and other measurements (height, waist, crotch, lateral malleolus). Axilla height with more outliers indicated that other type of body height measurements had a higher potential for errors. The posture for body measurement was standardized as standing erect; however, this study indicated that many measurement errors were possible between using an auto-measurement program and direct measurement. The value of outlier about a particular measurement item can expect increased errors about any group (height: large circumference group/ axilla height: body height group). We have to study the relation in measurements in these types ‘large circumference’ because ‘head dimensions’ types correlate between measurements in each group. We need a more detailed analysis about outliers to find the major factors for measurement errors in regards to the elderly as well as discuss the possibility of ISO measurement-standard’s application for the elderly.

Recently, measurement monitoring is actively used for safety management of facilities. However, since the field measurement data contains many outliers, a preprocessing process is required for reliable behavior analysis of the data. In this paper, we present a detection method of time series outliers and its applications. And we propose the precaution for the preprocessing process.

Currently, the cable safety management of cable supported bridges is calculated by the ratio of the measured tension to the design tension. The measurement of the tension is performed by indirectly estimating the acceleration measured at the cable surface in terms of the tension. The method of converting the cable vibration response (acceleration) into the tension is disadvantageous in that the damage of the individual strand (or wire) in the cable is not clearly reflected in the tension because the measurement is not reliable and is managed only by the total tension. The purpose of this study is to improve the cable safety management system by evaluating how the damage of individual strand of MS type cable, which is mainly applied to cable-stayed bridges, affects the safety level managed by level of cable tension.
