To transform old words into new words is a very efficient mode of word derivation in contemporary Chinese, which mainly involves the transformation of word form and the transformation of meaning. In the process of transforming the old words language users have created a lot of new words that are very novel in form or meaning based on the relationship between Chinese characters in terms of sound, shape and meaning or the structural features of Chinese characters. This paper lists more than 130 new appellations including sound-based words, form-based words, meaning-based words and words produced by changing the structure of Chinese characters, names the ways how old words transform into new words as JieYinFuXing, XieYinFuYi, BieJieFuYi, FanBeiFuYi, GaiZiBianXing and describes the transformation process of these words. These lexical phenomenons reflect some language psychology such as pursuing new differences, playing jokes and mental association. They have some impacts on the lexical system of contemporary Chinese as they open up new ways for the generation and change of contemporary Chinese words, they supplement the word-making methods and lead to some unconventional combinations in contemporary Chinese lexis. This paper intends to further clarify the important role of Chinese characters in word creation and word development, and deepen the understanding of Chinese Character study and contemporary Chinese lexicology.
As the largest written Chinese dictionary in the Joseon Dynasty, “Gujin Shilin” contains a wealth of Korean vulgar words. This paper takes the Korean Kanji Words in “Gujin Shilin” as an example, analyzes the Korean common characters used in the entry, and summarizes the characteristics of the common characters in the inheritance of “Liushu”, such as associative compounds, pictophonetic characters, and phonetic loan characters, as well as the simplification of the form, the symbolization of the components, and the components of the common characters. The variation law of functionalization and reconstruction of pronunciation and meaning is beneficial to the research on the spread and development of popular characters outside the territory.
Taboo is an ancient custom in China. The taboo system was applied to the names of emperors had a long history in China. Beginning from Zhou Dynasty, until to Qing Dynasty. It is true that taboo system has caused confusion of the recording of ancient Chinese books and inconvenience to the study of historical materials, but one will be able to apply its principle to appraise the authenticity of those books and materials of one has a good grasp of it. Taboo studies also have a long history. According to Chen Yuan’s陳垣 Shi hui ju li史諱舉例,there are different ways to avoid the forbidden words, such as change the character, blank character, omit a stroke, change the pronunciation, etc. This paper claimed that besides change the forbidden word to a synonym, other ways to achieve taboos were occurred in Han Dynasty, such as “missing one stroke of a Chinese character”, “change the formation of a Chinese character”, “change the shape of a Chinese character”, etc. That means the old conclusion of Chen Yuan and other scholars may be not true. However, philologists argued that those changes are the result of the variant form of a Chinese character異體字. Scholars stated that the way to avoid a tabooed word in Han dynasty was to change the forbidden word to a synonym. In this paper, according to Louji’s 婁機 Hanliziyuan漢隸字源, Hongkuo’s洪适 Lishi隸釋, Zhou Guangye’s周廣業 Jing shi bi ming hui kao經史避名彙考, we examine the relationship between tabooed character and variant form of a Chinese character. Finally, discuss the importance of variant form of a Chinese character in the aspect of taboo studies.
이 글의 연구 과제는 ‘漢字의 形・音・義를 어떻게 파악할 수 있는가?’이다. 入門期 한자 학습자가 특정 한자를 처음 접할 때, 그 한자의 모양, 소리, 음 곧, 漢字의 形・音・義를 어떻게, 어떤 경로를 통하여 파악할 수 있는가라는 문제이다. 이 글에서 ‘漢字의 形・音・義 파악하기’로 명명한다. 이 글의 연구 과제인 ‘漢字의 形・音・義 파악하기’를 수행하기 위한 기초 작업으로 다음 세 가지 연구 내용을 설정했다. 첫째, 한문과 교육과정에 제시된 漢字의 形・音・義 파악하기 내용을 분석하는 것이다. 한자의 짜임, 부수, 자전 등이 주목된다. 둘째, 한문 교과서에 제시된 漢字의 形・音・義 파악 하기 관련 교수・학습 방법을 분석하고자 한다. 단원 구성, 한자의 짜임, 부수 등을 강조했다. 셋째, 漢字의 形・音・義를 파악할 수 있는 교수・학습 방법을 제시하고자 한다. 교육과정 내용 및 교과서 분석을 토대로, 현장에서 실행 가능한 漢字 形・音・義 파악학기 교수・학습 방법을 학습 요소, 기법, 그리고 자료 층위에서 試論하고자 한다.
Shape analysis ought to be emphasized in the teaching of Chinese characters. The primary methods to analyze the form of Chinese characters are incarnated in ShuoWenJieZi includeing analysis on component function, analysis on form variation and analysis on isomorphic part, all of which afford us as references that merit academic attention in modern teaching of Chinese characters. The paper introduces the method of structure analysis from ShuoWenJieZi, focusing on how to draw lessons from these approaches in the teaching of Chinese characters and illustrating key points in practical application as well as effects that may achieve.
here are two ways of segmenting Chinese characters: form-based segmentation and etymology-based segmentation, which have come up with different conclusions. They, with their own theories and values, are complementary to each other, and serve Chinese character teaching in different ways from different perspectives. Form-based segmentation may produce the minimum form units of characters, which can be arranged into the basic form units. Basic form units can help character learners to get an initial knowledge of the form of characters, and thus to lay a good foundation for character learning.
Han characters may be taught both as components of the mother tongue as well as elements of certain foreign languages. This paper centres on understanding approaches to the teaching of writing of Han characters as an aspect of foreign language learning. The mastery of Han characters may be considered a key objective in mother-tongue as well as foreign language teaching in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan, but is only considered as foreign language teaching in Korea. However, the written forms taught in schools in the five above-mentioned locations differ markedly from one another. Japan has strict stipulations about written forms of Japanese; the governments of China, Taiwan and Hong Kong adhere to prescribed benchmarks on the written form of Han characters; while Korea only sets requirements on fonts. Although Hong Kong supposedly has a recommended benchmark, differences in written forms can be found in primary and secondary school textbooks. This leads to problems in teaching and assessment since few teachers have a comprehensive understanding on the difference in written forms of Han characters found in Hong Kong and elsewhere in South-East Asia. This paper looks at differences in the written forms of Han characters in the five regions mentioned above, and at some of the issues associated with these differences.
