In this paper, the emission processes of odors and VOCs sources for main industries were estimated thorough material balances and literature survey, and the characteristics of odors and VOCs concentration were examined by analysing four year of monitoring data in Jeonbuk Industrial Area. The several sampling sites were selected in the industrial site by considering TRI (Toxics Release Inventory), which were made by the Ministry of Environment based on the kinds and the amount of hazardous chemical materials for the industries, and the wind direction survey for ten years. Air samples were collected once per a season for four years in the sites. GC-PFPD, HPLC, and GC-FID were used for measuring sulfur compounds, aldehyde, and trimethylamine among odorous compounds and GC-MSD was used for VOCs. As the main results of this study, toluene, benzene, acetone, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, xylene, styrene and chloroform were detected as main volatile organic compounds in this area. Hydrogen sulfide, trimethylamine and acetaldehyde were main detected species the odorous compounds.

In this study, the characteristics of panel members with various factors on the odor judgement using a air dilution olfactory method were investigated. The frequency distribution curves of Dev(D/Ttotal) and Dev(D/T₃) were found to be a normal distribution, but it appears that values around median on the distribution curve of Dev(D/T₃) were relatively sparse. Factors of outlier deviate from a confidence interval of 99% were found to be male < female, smoker < non-smoker, experience < non-experience, and bad < common state of health. Data obtained from female panel members appears high positive(+) deviation on the odor judgement.

In this study, alkali impregnated filter sampling method was considered for VFAs in ambient air. When KOH concentration was 0.5 N and sampling flow velocity was 5~10 L/min the sampling efficiency was higher than 90 percent. More than 3 minute shaking make the sampled filter to be suspended in the 22.3 mL Vial. Alkali impregnated filter sampling method showed more than 4 times higher response compared to alkali solution sampling method, when the sample was analysed by headspace-gas chromatography. Five kinds of volatile fatty acids (propionic acid, i-butyric acid, n-butyric acid, i-valeric acid, valeric acid) were detected within 1.0~9.8 ppbv in the cow shed by alkali impregnated filter method and headspace gas chromatography. The alkali impregnated filter method was the most suitable sampling method for ambient volatile fatty acids with headspace gas chromatography analysis.

In this study, an attempt was made to measure uncertainties involved in the analysis of gaseous VOC standards prepared at various dilution stage. A GC/FlD system equipped with air server/thermal desorption (AS/TD) unit was used to draw calibration curves for the known amounts of VOC gases (including benzene, toluene, xylene, and styrene) prepared at four individual concentrations (10, 20, 50, and 100 ppb). The calibration curves obtained from standards of each respective concentration were compared with each other. It was found that the loss of samples was more prominent with decreasing standard concentrations (e.g., one prepared at 10 ppb) and that the heaviest compound, styrene exhibited the most noticeable loss than the others. In this study, an ancillary experiment was also conducted to evaluate the compatibility of standards between gaseous (using Tedlar bag) and liquid phases (using tube method). Based on this comparative analysis, the compatibility between two standard type was evaluated in terms of the recovery ratio between gas and liquid: 56 (benzene), 42 (toluene), 31 (p-xylene), and 25% (styrene).

A wastewater treatment plant consists of unit processes designed to achieve specific waste reduction goals. However, offensive odors associated with the treatment processes are a constant source of public complaints. The purpose of this study was to statistically determine the process parameters that influence the formation of volatile sulfur conpounds (VSCs) in the secondary treatment system. A statistical model was developed to relate the process parameters to the formation of VSCs in this system. The model established that F{M ratio, sludge blanket depth and SSV60 were the dominant process parameters that would influence the formation of VSCs in the secondary sedimentation basin. This model provides a useful tool for plant engineers to predict and control the VSCs formation in an secondary activated sludge system.

We review basic principles and recent applications of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) for chemical sensors. QCM sensors have been currently employed in the analysis of odorous compounds as well as common gas detection. Various types of data analysis have been employed for the pattern recognition and classification techniques. Future trends and application areas of QCM sensors is also introduced and summarized in the text.

The objectives of this investigation are as follows: 1) To sort out places of businesses that have to do with the discharge of offensive odor 2) To find out what generates offensive odor 3) To check the current status regarding offensive odor. The investigation is held through complete enumeration of approximately two thousand businesses concerning the SihwaㆍBanwol Industrial Complex. The local residents have directly visited related businesses and performed the following investigations: 1) General status check 2) Area source 3) Point source The investigation of offensive odor is utilized by direct olfactory method in six levels. Through this method, the followings have been established as DB: Degree of offensive odor, type of odor, preventive facility status, etc. The major characteristic of this investigation is that local residents have directly visited individual businesses and checked the status of offensive odor, which opens up a possibility of mutual settlement for the reduction of offensive odor between businesses and local residents. Businesses and local residents can share a common understanding and this means a great deal. Furthermore, it is widely expected that the investigation data can be utilized as a source for presuming the origin of offensive odor in case of civil petition.
