In this study, we attempt to analyze biofilter"s removal efficiency for volatile organic compounds from paint factory. this experiment conducted in a pilot plant with microorganisms immobilized polyurethane foam. 7 main components (Toulene, MEK, MIBK, o-Xylene, m-Xylene, Butyl acetate, Ethyl benzene) emitted from factory ventilation opening were analyzed. During the test period, the biofilter treated VOCs in 5 seconds (EBCT) and pressure drop was less than 30 ㎜H₂O/m in media. Removal efficiencies of all components were between 80~90% in 10 days of operation and higher than 94% after 40 days. The result of this experiment shows that biofilter can be useful technology for VOCs removal in the paint industry.

Absorption characteristics of acetaldehyde (one of odors) were investigated using a bubble tank. The capacity of reaction tank made of acrylic is I liter and the experiment was carried out as semi-batch mode (for given absorbent packing, acetaldehyde was fed continuously with flow rate of 2 L/min). As operating variables of experiment, concentration of acetaldehyde (40~100 ppm), absorption temperature (25~45℃), and packing volume of absorbent (100~300 ㎖) were applied. The experimental results showed that the removal efficiency of acetaldehyde decreased as 20~30%, with increasing concentration of acetaldehyde in the range of 40~100 ppm, and decreased as 15~30%, with increasing absorption temperature in the range of 25~45°C, while it increased with increasing packing volume of absorbent. Reaction rate which is measured by experiment is well matched with the calculated one from theoritical rate equation.

"Sick car syndrome" is known as a syndrome having latent health damage caused by complex smell of the assorted chemicals such as PVC and ABS which was components of new car interior trim (sheet, dashboard, audio case, cable, safety glass, synthetic rubber, and adhesive). The impact of interior trim on VOC levels was evaluated by testing with leather or fabric trims. Concentrations of VOCs and formaldehyde (HCHO) discharged from the car interior trims (2 sheet covers and 1 headliner) fixed in the sample holder of the small chamber were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Concentrations of TVOC and HCHO emitted from 3 samples increased with increasing temperature and time. Concentration of TVOC emitted from PVC foam leather was highest under experimental conditions.

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the odor exhaust characteristics of Sihwa and Banwol industrial complex during one year in 2007 by the automatic odor analyzer. As the continuous monitoring results on the 54 odor items, the highest average concentrations in two complexes were p-diethylbenzene, ammonia, toluene and methylethylketone. The items haven highest contribution rate in Sihwa and Banwol industrial complex were Dimethyl sulfide, i-Valerie acid, i-Valer aldehyde, Valerie acid, Trimethylamine and Etylmercaptan, Hydrogen sulfide, Dimethyl sulfide, Formaldehyde, Trimethylamine. When the odor concentrations converted into the total odor intensity, The percentages of hour data appeared over 3 degree of odor intensity were 0.5% (40 hr) in Sihwa station and 3.0% (210 hr) in Banwol station, respectively. Over 1 degree of odor intensity which is odor threshold value also were 68.3% in sihwa station and 82.5% in Banwol station, respectively. The highest monthly odor intensity was shown in January and February. Therefore, continuous monitoring system for odor compounds through the odor automatic station seems to be the most efficient method for investigating odor exhaust characteristics.

Bioaerosols become a more noticed and important problem in indoor air quality (IAQ) control. In this study, we investigated antibacterial effects of silver nano-particles on Escherichia coli, the common Gram negative bacteria and Staphylococcus aureus, the well-mown Gram positive bacteria under aerosol conditions. The bioaerosols containing each bacterial culture were contacted with silver nano-particles sprayed in a closed chamber. Experimental results showed that the silver nano-particles had strong antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. As anticipated, high antibacterial activity was found at a high silver concentration and a long the contact time. It was also found that the bactericidal rate decreased with time due to the aggregation of silver nano-particles. Overall, the experimental finding suggested that silver nano-particles could be successfully applied to improve indoor air quality.

To analyze trace-level, reduced sulfur compounds (RSC) in ambient air, gas chromatography (GC) is used as the commonest method. The GC-based analysis is generally conducted by transferring samples via direct injection into GC or by the combined treatment of cryofocusing (CF) and thermal desorption (TD). In this study, experimental bias involved in GC analysis is examined by evaluating the calibration properties of each transfer approach. To this end, the detection properties of RSCs were evaluated with respect to the two major variables of sample concentration and sample volume. The recovery rate of TD application was also discussed based on the most recent findings in which its recovery rate is compared against the results derived by the direct injection method. The overall results suggest that the TD-based analysis of RSCs can be optimized by unifying the experimental conditions between sample and standard gases.

Two major enzymes, monooxygenase and dioxygenase, were exampled and explained to understand the microbial degradation mechanisms of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene). And we investigated and reported the related microbial species of each enzyme. In addition, we reviewed the degradation mechanism and pathway of each substrate. Lastly, we added the microbial degradation properties under the various conditions.
