This study aims to investigate how user experiences with generative AI assistants influence consumers’ perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and usage intention in a fashion shopping context. Drawing on the technology acceptance model (TAM), user experience was categorized into three dimensions—cognitive, affective, and relational—and their effects on consumers’ behavioral intention were examined. Data were collected through an online survey of 220 adult consumers and analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) with AMOS. The results were as follows. First, cognitive and affective experiences had significant positive effects on both perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, whereas relational experience did not. Second, both perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use had significant positive effects on usage intention, with perceived usefulness derived from cognitive experience having the strongest influence. These findings suggest that consumers place greater importance on accurate and useful information and positive emotional experiences than relational connections with AI assistants. This study contributes to the literature by extending the TAM through the incorporation of multidimensional user experiences in generative AI services within fashion shopping contexts. It also provides practical implications for fashion companies by suggesting strategic directions for effectively designing and implementing AI assistant services to enhance consumers’ user experience and increase usage intention.
This study evaluated changes in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) concentrations and health risks under three residential winter scenarios: no air purifier operation (S1), fixed air purifier operation (S2), and IoT-based mobile air purifier operation (S3). VOC reduction effects and non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were compared. Some VOCs, including benzene and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, decreased under air purifier operation compared with S1. Benzene concentrations in S3 were approximately 19.6% lower than in S2. The proportions satisfying S2/S1 < 1.0 and S3/S1 < 1.0 were 29.1% and 40.7%, respectively. This indicates a greater reduction tendency in S3, particularly in spaces without fixed purifiers, such as kitchens, studies, and general rooms. The exceedance rates of the hazard index (HI) threshold were 83.8%, 83.4%, and 39.3% for S1, S2, and S3, respectively. This represents an approximately 53% lower non-carcinogenic risk exceedance in S3. For carcinogenic risk, the excess cancer risk (ECR) of 2-propenenitrile in S3 decreased by 86.7% and 85.8% at the 50th percentile and by 55.4% and 63.3% at the 90th percentile, compared with S1 and S2, respectively. Although total ECR exceeded the acceptable level in all scenarios, S3 showed 46.9% and 46.2% lower values at the 50th percentile than S1 and S2. Overall, IoT-based mobile air purifier operation reduced VOC concentrations and mitigated health risks by targeting rooms with elevated pollution levels using roomspecific indoor air pollution information.
This study quantitatively evaluated the real-world performance of an IoTbased, context-aware mobile air purification system. Additionally, this system is proposed as a practical alternative to conventional stationary purifiers, overcoming their spatial limitations. To analyze concentration variations, removal efficiency, and air cleaning ratio (ACR) for PM2.5, PM10, and HCHO, three scenarios were tested: S1 (natural ventilation), S2 (stationary purifier), and S3 (IoT-based mobile air purification system). The mobile system (S3) achieved a 1.6-fold higher removal efficiency for PM2.5 compared with the stationary purifier (S2) and reduced the ACR to below 0.4 within 30 minutes after high-concentration events. In contrast, stationary purifiers required approximately 333 minutes to reach background levels (17.11 μg/m3), revealing about a 10-fold difference in cleaning speed. Monte Carlo simulations confirmed the consistent superiority of S3 for both particulate and gaseous pollutants, with HCHO concentrations 36.7% lower (90th percentile) than under S2. According to the health risk assessment, the asthma hospitalization rate decreased by over 40%, the HQ for PM2.5 decreased from 1.1 (S1) to 0.64 (S3), and the ECR for HCHO was 0.62 times that of S2. These findings highlight that spatial responsiveness and mobility, along with filter capacity, are key determinants of air purification performance. In conclusion, the mobile air purifier effectively overcomes the structural constraints of stationary devices and establishes a new paradigm for realtime, adaptive indoor air quality management that helps safeguard occupant health.
This study examined the influence of multiple factors—particularly occupant presence and air purifier operation—on indoor PM2.5 concentrations across 104 households in the Seoul metropolitan area. Both indoor and outdoor PM2.5 concentrations were continuously monitored and integrated with time-specific survey data to analyze spatial and temporal patterns of indoor exposure. Results showed that occupant presence significantly elevated indoor PM2.5 concentrations, especially during periods of high activity (08:00~15:00 and 18:00~20:00). The indoor/outdoor (I/ O) concentration ratio was also significantly higher during these periods, indicating that occupant activities were a major contributor to indoor PM2.5 concentrations. Air purifier use was found to be associated with a consistent reduction in indoor PM2.5 concentrations, regardless of occupancy status. Notably, the I/O ratio also decreased when air purifiers were in operation, demonstrating their effectiveness in controlling both indoor emissions and the infiltration of outdoor pollutants. These findings provide empirical evidence of the multifactorial dynamics governing indoor PM2.5 exposure and highlight the importance of occupant-centered and time-specific strategies for effective residential air quality management.
This study aims to examine the validity of current environmental safety standards and propose necessary improvements to minimize health risks posed by heavy metals in children’s activity zones. Compared to adults, children are more vulnerable to hazardous substances, and exposure to heavy metals can severely impact their neurological development and physical growth. In Korea, the amendment of the Enforcement Rules of the Environmental Health Act (Annex 4-20) in July 2021 reduced the acceptable threshold for lead (Pb) in paints and finishing materials used in children’s activity zones. However, regulatory standards for other heavy metals remain insufficient. Therefore, this research investigates and analyzes both domestic and international standards for heavy metals in commonly used materials such as wallpaper, flooring, finishing materials, and paints. This paper proposes guidelines for improving current regulatory criteria based on scientific validity and potential exposure. The findings are expected to serve as foundational data for advancing proactive environmental safety management strategies to better protect children’s health.
Invasive species compete with native species and damage ecosystems. Due to their limited resources, island ecosystems are vulnerable to impacts of invasive species. In the Deokjeok archipelago, South Korea, invasive sika deer (Cervus nippon ssp. taiouanus) introduced for economic purposes are causing harm through severe browsing. This study aimed to evaluate long-term browsing impacts of invasive deer by tracking vegetation index changes from 1986 to 2020 with Landsat satellite imagery and the LandTrendr algorithm. We compared vegetation index trend using Sen’s slope and Disturbance/Recovery area ratio (D/R ratio) between Gureop-do, where these deer were introduced with rapid population increase, and Deokjeok-do, Baega-do, and Mungapdo where these deer have not been introduced yet. Results showed a decreasing trend of the vegetation index in Gureop-do, while other islands without those deer increased. The cumulative D/R ratio on Gureop-do was 212.44%, meaning that disturbance exceeded the recovery area more than two-fold. In contrast, the D/R ratios for other islands remained under 50%. Sen’s slope and t-test showed a significant decrease of NDVI in Gureop-do after deer introduction in 2000. By quantifying the browsing impact of invasive ungulates in island ecosystems using satellite imagery, time and costeffective strategies for invasive species monitoring are provided.
This study presents an integrated indoor air quality index (IAQI) algorithm aimed at enhancing the efficiency of indoor air quality management in diverse indoor environments. The proposed IAQI accounts for the combined effects of multiple pollutants, offering a more comprehensive approach than traditional concentrationbased methods. Findings from four exposure scenarios and probabilistic health risk assessments indicate that the IAQI can be tailored to reflect occupant characteristics and space usage, thereby providing improved protection for sensitive populations, such as newborns. The application of occupant-specific criteria led to reductions in pollutant concentrations and associated health risks compared to conventional standards. Furthermore, the IAQI incorporates correction factors and weighted adjustments, facilitating robust risk assessments in complex multi-pollutant contexts. By addressing the limitations of single-pollutant management, this approach supports the development of more effective strategies for indoor air quality control. The proposed algorithm holds significant potential for practical applications in indoor air quality management and policymaking. Future research should focus on validating its effectiveness across a wider range of indoor environments.
This study investigated the characteristics of personal PM2.5 exposure among 109 participants residing in Seoul over a two-month period, from February 2024 to April 2024. The participants were categorized into four sub-populations, and personal exposure to PM2.5 was assessed using portable monitors, GPS, and time-activity diaries. To understand the time-activity patterns, the daily occupancy rate for different microenvironments was calculated. Additionally, daily PM2.5 exposure contribution and integrated exposure were quantified. A time series analysis was conducted to identify differences in time-activity patterns and PM2.5 exposure among the sub-populations. ANOVA analysis indicated statistically significant differences in PM2.5 concentrations across populations and microenvironments (p<0.05). However, post-hoc analysis revealed specific microenvironments within certain sub-populations where PM2.5 concentration differences were not significant (p>0.05). All sub-populations spent more than 90% of their time indoors, and the results for exposure contribution and integrated exposure indicated that the home, which had the highest occupancy rate, was the most significant contributor to PM2.5 exposure. This study is expected to serve as foundational data for future indoor air quality management and the development of personalized strategies for reducing PM2.5 exposure.
This study aims to investigate how consumers perceive the attributes (ubiquity, continuity) of metaverse fashion brands in a virtual space. It also empirically verifies the impact on consumers’ perceived values (hedonic value, social value) and consumer behavioral intentions (intention to use the platform, intention to purchase virtual products). The results verified in this study are as follows: First, we confirmed that the metaverse attributes perceived by consumers in the virtual space of the fashion brand, ubiquity and daily extension, positively affect customers’ perceived hedonic and social values. Second, we found that consumers’ perceived hedonic and social values have a significant positive effect on their intention to use the platform. Finally, we found that consumers’ intention to use the platform had a significant positive effect on their intention to purchase virtual products. The results of this study will have academic significance by expanding the scope of research related to identifying metaverse attributes and values by identifying metaverse attributes and consumer values that perceived by consumers in fashion brands’ virtual spaces in the metaverse. This study suggests a direction and strategy for fashion brands to move forward in building virtual spaces on the metaverse platform. In this way, they can create perceived value for consumers that elicits positive consumer behavioral intentions.
This study evaluated the importance of assessing personal exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by monitoring indoor, outdoor, and personal VOC levels in 15 Seoul residents over a 3-month period using passive samplers. Results indicated that limonene had the highest concentrations across indoor, outdoor, and personal samples, with this compound primarily originating from household cleaners and air fresheners. Other VOCs, such as 2-butanone and toluene, also varied by location. Health risk assessments showed that most VOCs had a Hazard Index (HI) below 1, while the HI of individual exposures were relatively higher. Notably, cancer risk assessments for chloroform and ethylbenzene exceeded permissible levels in some scenarios, suggesting potential cancer risks. This underscores the importance of diverse microenvironment monitoring for accurate health risk evaluations, as relying solely on indoor and outdoor levels can underestimate actual exposure risks. This study highlights the need for future research to monitor VOC levels in various microenvironments, in addition to the necessity of investigating personal activity patterns in depth to accurately assess personal exposure levels. Such an approach is crucial for precise health risk assessments, and it provides valuable foundational data for evaluating personal VOC exposures.
This study performed the pre-treatments of the manufacturing of the pork skin snack with wet-salting (3% and 6%; 3W and 6W) and dry-salting (0.3% and 0.6%; 0.3D and 0.6D). Regarding the manufacturing yield, the 0.3D and 6W were significantly higher than the other samples (p<0.05). The water contents of the Con and 0.6D were significantly lower than the other samples (p<0.05). The fat contents of the Con and 6W were evidently higher than the 3W, 0.3D, and 0.6D (p<0.05). The lightness of the wet-salting group was markedly higher than the Con (p<0.05). The redness and yellowness of the 0.6D were noticeably higher than the Con (p<0.05). The crispness of the 0.6D was considerably higher than the other samples (p<0.05). The appearance and sensory crispness of the 3W and 0.6D were notably lower than the other samples (p<0.05). The taste score of the 0.6D was much lower than the 6W and 0.3D (p<0.05). The overall acceptability of the Con, 6W, and 0.3D was appreciably higher than the other samples (p<0.05). Overall, this study showed that wet-salting with 6% (6W) and dry-salting with 0.3% (0.3D) can improve pork skin snack quality properties.
Particulate matter is known to have adverse effects on health, making it crucial to accurately gauge its concentration levels. While the recent advent of low-cost air sensors has enabled real-time measurement of particulate matter, discrepancies in concentrations can arise depending on the sensor used, the measuring environment, and the manufacturer. In light of this, we aimed to propose a method to calibrate measurements between low-cost air sensor devices. In our study, we introduced decision tree techniques, commonly used in machine learning for classification and regression problems, to categorize particulate matter concentration intervals. For each interval, both univariate and multivariate multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to derive calibration equations. The concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 measured indoors and outdoors with two types of LCS equipment and the GRIMM 11-A device were compared and analyzed, confirming the necessity for distinguishing between indoor and outdoor spaces and categorizing concentration intervals. Furthermore, the decision tree calibration method showed greater accuracy than traditional methods. On the other hand, during univariate regression analysis, the proportion exceeding a PM2.5/PM10 ratio of 1 was significantly high. However, using multivariate regression analysis, the exceedance rate decreased to 79.1% for IAQ-C7 and 89.3% for PMM-130, demonstrating that calibration through multivariate regression analysis considering both PM10 and PM2.5 is more effective. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the accurate calibration of particulate matter measurements and have showcased the potential for scientifically and rationally calibrating data using machine learning.
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are chemicals to which humans are exposed frequently via various mediums, including vehicle emissions that contain fine dust and heavy metals, use of organic solvent building materials, furniture, and smoking. Exposure to high concentrations of VOCs may result in loss of consciousness, paralysis, convulsions, and, in the most severe cases, death. Therefore, the present study investigated the indoor and outdoor concentrations of total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) and five types of VOCs (benzene, toluene, styrene, m,p-xylene, and o-xylene) in apartments, a representative residential environment accounting for ~55% of the housing in the Seoul metropolitan area. The research was conducted over four seasons from May 2020 to February 2021, and the levels of VOC concentrations were analyzed by classifying them by season, weekday/weekend, and indoor/outdoor locations. The seasonal trend in VOC concentrations showed that TVOC concentration was highest in summer, with values of 1630.93 ± 1184.10 μg/m3 and 1610.36 ± 1363.43 μg/m3 for indoor and outdoor environments, respectively. The seasonal trends of the concentrations of the five types of VOCs showed that concentrations of benzene and toluene were highest in spring, the concentrations of m,p-xylene and o-xylene were highest in summer, and the concentration of styrene was highest in winter, irrespective of spatial characteristics such as indoor/outdoor environments. In all four seasons, the indoor concentrations were higher than the outdoor concentrations. These results reveal the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of the VOCs and so can serve as useful basic data for managing indoor and outdoor levels of VOCs.
This study empirically verified the effect of the characteristics of live commerce on consumer trust and purchase intention. An online survey was conducted targeting adult women in their 20s and 30s who watched videos relating to fashion products on the NAVER shopping live channel; 281 questionnaires were analyzed using the IBM SPSS statistics 23 and AMOS 21 software packages. Consequently, the four factors of interactivity, attractiveness, price discount, and playfulness were identified from the data as characteristics of live commerce. Whereas interactivity and playfulness positively affected trust in both the seller and the product, attractiveness did nor significantly affect trust in the seller and the product. Furthermore, price discount had a significant positive effect only on trust in the seller and had no significant effect on trust in the product. In addition, trust in both the seller and the product had a significant positive effect on consumers’ purchase intention; in particular, trust in the seller had a greater influence on consumers’ purchase intention than trust in the product did. Research on the characteristics of live commerce can contribute to extend the theorical framework of live commerce research. Finally, fashion companies using live commerce channels will be able to develop live commerce channels that can elicit positive consumer perceptions based on the results of this study.
