For university-level students of English as a Foreign Language in Korea, those who reported reading more in their first language a1so read more in their second language, supporting the hypothesis that the reading habit transfers across languages. Consistent with previous research, those who read more in their second language displayed more second 1anguage competence. These results suggest that first language reading habits have an indirect effect on second language competence.

According to the statistical data by the Ministry of Statistics, human trade affairs have been minimally increasing at most. At present, foreign languages (except for ]apanese and Chinese) are at stake. In order to avoid these risky situations, it is urgent to understand and examine the requirement of the current Korean society. It would be more desirable and effective to cultivate written communication skills rather than oral communication skills in case of the context in which there are rare chances to encounter native speakers of the target language. In this regard, this study suggests that instruction of written language (reading-writing) should be weighed more in foreign language classrooms.

This short essay is a slightly modified version of a presentation read at the annual Institute seminar held at SNU on the 5th of December to exchange views on the function of reading in foreign language education in Korea. It begins with the discussion of a need on the paπ of policy makers of English teaching to reassess and revise the dominantly pragmatic and instrumentalist philosophy particularly working in the pedagogy of reading in English. According to the revisionist review of the present writer, the guiding spirit of the 4-skill orientation has so far tended to overvalue the linguistic and communicative functions (or ’grammar’ as is termed here to contrast with the 'text’ that follows) at the cost of the human or readerly values carried by signifying textuality of the reading material. Language should and is fated to reflect and realize the lived experience of concrete and individualized people and society. English is a natural and cultural language that embraces a11 these cultural resourcefulness and expressiveness before it is a foreign language. Strategies of reading pedagogy ought to reflect this fundamental as well as human or value-oriented aspect of language despite the limited level of the language on the part of its leamers.

The course is composed of the teacher, the student and the teaching materials. But the function of supplementary readers as teaching materials for German literature has been not widely discussed and approved in Korea. In the first part of my paper 1 wiU describe existing supplementary readers which are almost the annotated readers. In the second part 1 will explain to three aspects for the production of the supplementary readers in the foreign language class. 1) The aspect of literature: it is important for the students to do experience the literary forms which are various and original. 2) The aspect of language: words and sentence structures must be neither excessively easy nor excessively difficult. 3) The aspect of reading process: the understanding process of literary texts should be more effectively used. The present paper attempts to convey the aesthetic and pedagogical values of supplementary readers in the foreign language class.

This paper investigates the status and change of qualitative research in TEFL and applied linguistics in an effort to project the direction of TEFL research in Korea. This paper first reviews a first and a second coming of age of the research in TESOL and applied linguistics, focusing on qualitative research methodology. For the study, the issues on a definition of qualitative research are raised, and three exemplars such as case study, conversation analysis, and ethnography are discussed in terms of assumptions, methods, data analysis and interpretation, and evaluative criteria. The importance and directions of qualitative research studies in TEFL in Korea are also suggested.

We cannot imagine textbooks without visual images in foreign language education. What are their roles and fuctions in language teaching? Are they simple decorations for just visual effects? Or are they presented to facilitate listening and reading comprehesion? To answer to these questions, this study is designed to analyse the relations between visual images and texts in language teaching materials based on communicative approach, and to argue that visual images are means of conveying their own autonomous meanings.
