This study explores the morpho-syntactic properties of the ‘overgenerated be’ that appears between a subject and a thematic verb (e.g., she is go home) produced by Korean-speaking English learners, and discusses how the overgenerated be reflects L2 inflection development. I argue that the overgenerated be initially functions as a topic marker, but then develops into a verbal inflection. A total of 377 writings of 23 first-year Korean middle school students were examined for the study. The students were divided into three groups based on their English proficiency. The overgenerated be was found mostly in the two lowest proficiency groups: the lowest proficiency group used the overgenerated be as a topic marker, while the medium proficiency group used the ‘overgenerated be’ as a verbal inflection to mark tense.

This study investigated which type of corrective feedback, direct feedback or indirect feedback, would be more effective for reducing the targeted errors−verb, noun, and determiner errors−in L2 writing. The 20 Korean EFL college students were divided into two feedback conditions: direct feedback and indirect coded feedback. The results of the study showed that only the errors in the noun category, not the other two categories, showed a significant decrease over time. There were no significant differences in the effect of the differential feedback. The post surveys and interviews revealed that the students in both groups had difficulty in understanding their errors and feedback on them, and they wanted to receive a more detailed explanation about their errors in order to fully understand them. The overall findings indicate that different types of corrective feedback need to be combined with other methods such as a one-to-one conference or mini-lesson for further helping students understand their errors and reduce other errors in the future. This study provides L2 teachers with valuable information on how to respond more effectively to the needs of L2 learners.

The present paper addresses Korean EFL learners’ acquisition of psych-verb and unaccusative constructions from a processing point of view. Korean learners’ interlanguage psych-verb constructions and unaccusative constructions are marked by underpassivization and overpassivization, respectively. While both kinds of errors are observed in Korean learners’ data, the processing account of language acquisition predicts that learners will commit underpassivization errors more frequently than overpassivization errors because passivization requires more processing. In order to see if the acquisition of psych-verb and unaccusative constructions is affected by the processing complexity of passivization, the present study compared learners’ performance on psych-verb and unaccusative constructions. Ninety six university students performed a timed grammaticality judgment task on the two types of constructions. The comparison of the learner performances between psych-verb and unaccusative constructions revealed that the learners were more accurate with psych-verb constructions than with unaccusative constructions. The learners’ accuracy with psych-verb constructions increased faster than unaccusative constructions, with the increase of the overall proficiency. The findings suggest that while processibility might be a major issue for low-level learners, there are other factors such as L1 transfer that exert a pervasive influence on the acquisition of psych-verb and unaccusative constructions.

The main goal of this study is to provide the educational contents of French grammar by means of English grammar. As one of their strong points, English has simplified the verbal and nominal inflections, but French has done the regular shape of its pronunciation. As a matter of course, they differ in the pronunciation, words, and expressions. Nevertheless, French and English have shared so many things through their history: their vocabulary and grammar on the Greco-Roman legacy have had mutual influences through Norman Conquest(1066) and the industrial revolution. So these two languages have grammatical common concepts, which are not at all: for example, the parts of speech, word order, modes, tense, passive voice, relative clauses, etc. There is not only grammatical similarity but also difference between these two languages. Basically, they have the word order SVO but French has the case SOV that contains clitic pronouns. They also show subtle disparities in the mood, the tense, the frame of verbal sub-categorization, the hiatus, etc. Though they broadly have common concepts of the article, its ordinary uses are not same. In the passive voice and the relative clauses, there is a little subtle distinction. But English grammar helps students to understand French grammar. In consequence, students who have knowledge of the former can easily acquaint the latter. Professors may lead students to reach to a higher level of French grammar by explaining common concepts and emphasizing different ones between these two languages

This paper overviews the college English teaching system at Seoul National University, and discusses possible changes prerequisite for the betterment of its system. It observes that improvement of college English education is hard to achieve without reestablishing its roles and objectives, paying special attention to its intrinsic relation with English teaching at the pre- and post-higher education levels. The paper suggests that colleges and universities lay more emphasis on quality education, which is best tuned to their students’ future needs and wants.

This paper discusses some of the expected features of multimedia based education and the teaching approach that promote active learning. The possibility of the multimedia-based education can have potential roles in enhancing learning. The particular attention is paid to the audio and visual presentation of the material with the goal of improving comprehension and retention. Certainly multimedia based education in English was developed by many researchers. On the contrary, multimedia based education in German has not been developed. In particular, Fritz Lang`s film <M> will be analyzed in this paper. It is Lang`s first soundfilm, so that the sound and picture have an effective function in the film. Otherwise the film. which was made in the Weimar Republic, presents social anxieties in Germany of the 1930. The paper concludes that multimedia based education in German is not only language but also culture education useful and effective.

The purpose of this study is to analyze needs of bilingual education for children of multicultural families, specially the bilingual classes performed by multicultural family support centers in Korea. Following a brief overview of the meaning and goals of bilingual education, the present study provides the results of the survey that was conducted on 45 program managers, 55 teachers, and 114 mothers of multicultural children who take bilingual classes. The results indicate that the current status of the bilingual programs reflects that of multicultural families in Korea. For example, the number of Korean-Chinese bilingual programs is the biggest one as that of immigrant women through marriage from China. The findings from this research tell us that the programs play efficient roles for improving the bilingual abilities of multicultural children although there remain many problems in terms of systematized curricula, interesting materials, and teacher training. Most of respondents (managers and teachers) say that they need to have standard teachers' manuals and workbooks for better educational services. The results of the analysis also show that it is urgent and important to enrich the substance of teacher training programs for enhancement of bilingual teachers' qualification.
