        1. 수축기 혈압은 운동을 하고 있는 군에서 약간 낮았으나 이완기 혈압은 유의성 있는 차이를 보이지 않았다. 운동을 하고 있는 여대생의 경우 체지방량이 낮게 나타난 반면 제지방량은 변화가 없어 운동 여부에 의한 차이가 거의 보이지 않았다. 또 혈중 포도당 함량은 규칙적인 운동을 하고 있는 여대생에서 다소 높은 수준이었다. 2. 체지방율은 지속적인 운동을 하고 있는 여대생에서 유의성은 없었지만 약간 낮았으며 혈청 총콜레스테롤과 중성지방의 농도 역시 유의성 있게 낮게 나타났다. HDL 콜레스테롤 농도는 두 군 모두 거의 비슷한 수준으로 군간에 뚜렷한 차이를 보이지 않았던 반면 LDL 콜레스테롤의 경우 운동에 의해서 유의성 있게 낮게 나타났다. 따라서 규칙적인 운동에 의해서 HDL-Chol/Total-Chol 비율은 증가되었으며 LDL-Chol/HDL-Chol의 비율은 낮았다. 3. 혈액중 지단백질의 상대적인 분포는 HDL(%)의 경우 지속적인 운동을 하고 있는 여대생의 경우 일반 여대생에 비해 거의 차이가 없었고LDL(%)는 유의성 있게 낮았던 반면 VLDL(%)는 오히려 높게 나타났다. Plasma의 지방산 조성중 포화 지방산 함량은 운동을 하고 있는 여대생에서 약간 높았지만 다가 불포화 지방산 함량은 같은 수준으로 두 군간에 차이를 보이지 않았다.

        The purpose of this study was to investigate to the effect of regular exercise on nutrients intakes and energy balance related to food habit and nutrient knowledge of college women. This study was conducted from May to June in 2000. One hundred and forty female students made their three day dietary records by 24-hr recall method and one day activity record. The questionaires were designed to fine out food habit and nutrition knowledge status. The height, weight and blood pressure were measured and also body fat mass and lean body mass measurements were performed. The results obtained are summerized as follows Average height and weight of E(exercise) group were found to be increased than those of NE(non -exercise) group. The percent of body fat and body fat mass(㎏) in E group were slightly lower than those of NE group. Calorie intake of NE group was 1, 664㎉ per day, This was composed of carbohydrate 60%㎉, protein 14%㎉ and fat 24%㎉. Calorie, calcium, iron, vitamin A, vitamin B_2 and niacin intakes of NE group were lower than those of RDA and calorie intake of E group was 2, 313㎉ per day. This was composed of carbohydrate 54%, protein 13% and fat 31%. Other nutrients such as iron, vitamin A, niacin and vitamin C were lower than those of RDA. Daily energy expenditure and physical activity of E group were 2, 397.6±49.2㎉, 1, 035.7±36.5㎉, respectively and it was higher than those of NE group.

        The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of knee exercises on the onset times of vastus medialis oblique muscle (VMO) and vastus lateralis muscle (VL) and in healthy subjects. Fifteen subjects (7 men, 8 women) in a mean age of 26.4 years participated in the study. Electromyographic (EMG) signals were recorded from the VMO and VL under four exercises. Knee exercises consisted of open kinematic terminal knee extension, straight leg raising, isometric hip adduction exercise, and closed kinematic terminal knee extension. No significant differences were found in the onset times of EMG activities of VMO and VL in the four exercises. There were also no significant differences among the exercises. These results coincided with previous studies that found no difference between onset of VMO and VL. However, it is difficult to say that there is no difference between onset of VMO and VL in healthy subjects. To confirm this results, further researches that follow same on set determination metod and exercises are needed. Not only is the study of onset time of muscle needed, but also the studies of the amount of activation and the rate of increase of muscle activation are needed.

        Fatigue is the decline in force produced as a result of prolonged muscle activity. Localized muscle fatigue can be identified by a shift toward low in the frequency components of the EMG signal, typically represented by a fall in the median frequency. Previous studies show that a shortened muscle develops a higher fatigue than elongated muscles. The purpose of this study was to investigate the time-related change of median frequency and torque during maximal isometric back extension exercises at different exercise angles (, , , ). Twenty healthy subjects (mean age = ) were evaluated in this study. Median frequency was extracted from the EMG signals by fast Fourier transform (FFT). Initial median frequency and the slope of median frequency change over time were computed from linear regression analysis. Pearson's product moment correlation was used to quantify the relationship between slope of median frequency and torque. The results were as follows: 1) Significant differences in y-intercepts of torque regression equation with respect to exercise angle were shown. However, there were no differences in the slopes of the median frequency and torque, and y intercept of the median frequency among exercise angles. 2) There was no significant correlation between slope of median frequency and torque. 3) But there was moderate correlation between median frequency and torque at each exercise angle. In conclusion, the exercise angle during maximal isometric back extension exercise is not a direct effect on slope of median frequency and torque. But results showed that median frequency and torque shift were highly correlated in all subjects.

        Physical therapists should under stand motor control models and apply various models to evaluation and treatment of neurologically impaired patients. Thus, this paper reviews motor control models and applications in clinical settings. Assumptions and limitations of reflex models, hierarchical models, and systems models are presented. This paper also delineates goals and dissatisfaction of neurologic rehabilitation approaches for neurologically impaired patients. Muscle reeducation approach, neurotherapeutic facilitation approach, and contemporary task-oriented approach are explained.

        Back extension exercises have been used for rehabilitation of the injured low back, prevention of injury, and fitness training programs. However, excessive loading on low back can exacerbate existing structural weakness. The purpose of this study was to compare muscle activity of low back muscles during back extension exercises. Twenty healthy male subject s were evaluated. Electromyographic (EMG) activities of low back muscles at L1 and L5 level were recorded during seven different back extension exercises and two reference tasks by surface EMG and saved for data analysis. Reference tasks of lifting 20% and 40% of their body weight were included for comparison. The result were as follows: 1) Single-arm extension and single-leg extension exercises on quadruped position appeared to constitute a low-risk exercise for initial extensor strengthening. 2) When arm extension was combined with contralateral leg extension on quadruped position, EMG activities of low back muscles were increased. 3) EMG activity of low back muscles was highest during the trunk extension exercises on prone position. 4) EMG activities of low back muscles during arm and leg extension exercises on quadruped position were less than those of reference task of lifting 40% of their body weight. These result s have important implications for progressive back extensor muscle strengthening exercises in patients with back pain.

        The purposes of this study were to investigate the therapeutic effects of an early exercise program after mastectomy and to provide the early exercise program protocol for patients who had undergone mastectomy. The subjects were seventy women who were diagnosed with breast cancer. They were randomly as signed either to a experimental group (n=35) that received early postoperative exercise program or to a control group (n=35) that received only education by nurses. Data were obtained for each patient from goniometric measurements of shoulder flexion, abduction, external rotation, 10 elements of functional performance, and subjective pain evaluation using visual analogue scale (VAS). All variables were measured preoperatively, three days postoperatively, and one month postoperatively. Data were compared by groups using independent t-test and Mann-Whitney U test for parametric or non-parametric data, respectively. There were no significant differences between the groups for all variables preoperatively and at three days postoperatively. But there were significant differences at one month postoperatively. The experimental group showed a statistically significant increases in shoulder flexion, abduction, and external rotation and in the pain VAS at one month postoperatively (p<.05). Also, at one month postoperatively, the experimental group had less difficulty with three elements of functional performance-doing up a 'back' zippered article of clothing, reaching the ipsilateral scapula, and contralateral scapula with the fingers on the operated side-than the control group (p<.05). The results of this study suggest that, after mastectomy, the early exercise program conducted by a well-trained physical therapist can make a significant contribution to the return of more normal shoulder function and activities of daily living and to an increased quality of life.

        This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of the cysteine and glutathione on the motility index and morphology of human spermatozoa at the sperm processing in vitro. After treating the sperm with medium containing cysteine and glutathione, we measured the motility index and morphology at 0.5 h and 24 h. 1. Following the sperm culture for 0.5 h after treating the sperm with the medium containing 0, 1, 5, 10 mM cysteine, curvilinear velocity (VCL) was significantly (p<0.05) higher in control than that in all treatments. And straight-line velocity (VSL) was high at 1 mM and average path velocity (VAP) was low at 5 mM and 10 mM. But the motility (MOT) and morphology (NOM) were not different between control and all treatments. Following the sperm culture for 24 h, the MOT was significantly high in treatment groups (58.9, 74.4 and 62.3%), compared with that in control(28.7%) and the VCL was also high in treatment groups (31.4, 37.9, and 34.0 /s), compared with that in control (21.3 /s). The VSL (18.4, 21.7, and 18.9 /s) was significantly higher than control (10.7 /s) and the VAP (20.3, 24.7, and 21.4 /s) in treatments was also compared with that in control (12.6 /s). The NOM was not difference between control and treatments. 2 Following the sperm culture for 0.5 after treating the sperm with the medium containing 0, 1, 5, 10 mM glutathione, the MOT, VCL, VSL, VAP, and NOM were not different between control and treatments. Following the sperm culture for 24 h, the MOT was higher in treatment groups (82.9, 83.6, 83.4%) than in control (51.1%) and the VCL was higher in treatment groups (50.9, 51.3, and 49.4 /s) than control (34.1 /s). The VSL was also higher in treatment (17.1 /s) and the VAP was also higher in treatment groups (30.1, 32.5, and 29.7 /s) than in control (19.8 /s). The NOM was not different between control and treatments.

        요통은 산업화된 현대사회에서 흔히 발생하는 질환이다. 요통의 다양한 원인 중에서도 척추의 정상 가동범위를 넘은 불안정성이 요통의 한 원인으로 보고되고 있다. 이 문헌고찰의 목적은 요추 부위의 안정성을 부여하는 운동 프로그램 후 근육 기능의 강화, 통증의 감소를 보고한 논문들을 비교, 분석하는 것이다. 그리하여 요통의 한 원인인 척추의 안정성을 증가시켜 요추 부위의 통증을 감소시키고 기능을 향상시키는 운동 프로그램의 효과를 입증하는 것이다.

        Physiological Cost Index (PCI) of walking has been widely used to predict oxygen consumption in healthy subjects or patients. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the predictability of physiological cost index of upper extremity exercise with a sander for the amount of exercise and cardiac function and to find out most efficient speed of exercise. Upper extremity exercise was conducted in 67 healthy children (age 4 -12) for 2 minutes with a sander in two different speeds, such as self selected comfortable and self selected fast speeds. Speed of sander was calculated, and heart rate were measured before and immediately after the exercise. Physiological Cost Index (PCI) of upper extremity exercise was calculated for statistical analysis. The result were as follows; 1. Comfortable and fast speeds of the sander went up according to the increase of age, sander PCI during exercise by it, decreased as the age increased with significant difference in each group (p=0.00). The heart rate change during exercising by it, there was no significant difference. 2. The heart rate change during the exercise by sander increased as the speed of sander increased. Linear regression equation between the heart rate change during the exercise by sander and the speed of sander were 'Y (the heart rate change by sander) = 0.332X (the speed of sander) + 12.731' (R²= 0.154). Stepwise regression showed the speed of sander affected the change of heart rate positively, and the age affected negatively (R²= 0.242, p = 0.00). 3. The PCI during the exercise by sander decreased as the speed of sander increased. Linear regression equation between the PCI during the exercise by the sander and the speed of sander were 'Y (the PCI by sander) = -0.00495X (the speed of sander) + 2.091'(R²= 0.267), and statistic significant was recognized (p = 0.00). 4. The speed of exercise by sander it increased as the age increased. Linear regression equation between the speed of the sander and the age were 'Y (the speed of sander) = 2.481X (the age) -0.893(R²= 0.452), and statistic significant was recognized(p = 0.00). 5. The reliability analysis for the method of examining each PCI, showed high reliability coefficients and the value of alpha was 0.9337. In conclusion, PCI of the upper extremity exercise with a sander could be thought to predict the energy consumption from the speed of sander as there was a linear relationship between the speed of sander exercise and heart rate change with exercise. PCI of the upper extremity exercise with the self selected fast speed was most efficient. Further study with oxygen consumption analysis is recommended to apply PCI in upper extremities in patients with different pathologies in motion.

        구조물 지진해석을 위한 구조물 -지반 상호작용 해석에서도 비선형 지반 특성을 고려한 비선형해석이 요구되고 있어 구조물 비선형 지진 해석을 위해 기초 지반에 대한 수평방향 비선형 해석을 수행하였다. 기초지반은 UBC 분류에서 규정한 보통지반인 Sn 지반과 연약지반인 SE 지반을 고려하였고, 지반의 비선형 특성은 Ramberg-Osgood 모델을 이용하였다. 비선형 지반이 기초지반 수평 및 회전 동적 강성 및 감쇠비에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위하여 얕은 기초와 묻힌기초에 대해 기초 크기, 지반깊이 및 말뚝유무에 따른 동적 강성 및 감쇠비 변화를 조사하였는데, 지반의 비선형 특성이 기초지반의 선형 수평 및 회전 강성과 감쇠비를 크게 감소 또는 증가시키는 것으로 나타났으며, 기초크기, 지반깊이 및 말뚝유무의 영향도 큰 것으로 나타나 구조물 지진해석시 기초크기, 지반깊이 및 말뚝유무와 함께 지반의 비선형성도 고려하는 것이 필요한 것으로 판단되었다.

        The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of electrical stimulation biofeedback on motor learning of quadriceps muscle isometric exercise in 3 patients who have undergone total knee replacement surgery. A multiple baseline design across subjects was used. The electrical stimulation biofeedback was provided with each patient during quadriceps isometric exercise, which last 10 to 14 sessions with 10 repetitions each sessions. After training patients received 4 retention tests. Maximum muscle activity was measured pre- and post- electrical stimulation biofeedback training and retention test to evaluate the effect of biofeedback training. Maximum isometric muscle activity of quadriceps was increased after electrical stimulation biofeedback training in all subjects. The results indicate that a electrical stimulation biofeedback training is a useful method to improve motor learning of quadriceps isometric exercise in total knee replacement.

        The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of mild-intensity exercise training on the denervated muscle atrophy in the sciatic nerve injured rat. Thirty-six male Sprague-Dawley rats (250~300 g) were randomly assigned into three groups; sham-denervated group (n=8), denervated group (n=8), and denervated-exercised group (n=20). Exercise consisted of treadmill running at 20 m/min speed with 0% grade for 30 min/day. The animals were decapitated at the second and sixth weeks postcrush. Soleus and medial gastrocnemius were immediately excised to be weighed. Type I and II fibers of the muscles were differentiated by m-ATPase (pH 9.4) stain, and fiber diameters were evaluated. The results were as follows: 1) The weight of the soleus and medial gastrocnemius muscles showed a tendency to increase in both the denervation-exercised groups compared to the denervated group. 2) In the 2-week denervation-exercised group, type II fiber diameter of soleus and type I fiber diameter of medial gastrocnemius were increased significantly compared to the denervated control group. 3) In the 6-week denervated-exercised group, type I fiber diameter of soleus and type II fiber diameter of medial gastrocnemius were hypertrophied significantly compared to sham-denervated group. The results of this study suggested that treadmill exercise partially prevented denervation atrophy in the soleus and medial gastrocnemius of the rat.

        For the purpose of disclosing the effects of progressive low intensity exercise on the activity of the elderly, questionnaire survey and physical fitness examination were performed on the subjects who were 65 years old or older. The subjects were assigned into two groups using paired matching on gender and age: experimental group (33 persons) and control groups (35 persons). The subjects in experimental group was put on the low intensity exercise program (exercising upper and lower limbs for 12 weeks using dumbbell and lead-packed weight). The results showed that the difference of physical and social behavior scores among activities before and after exercise were significantly higher in all variables of general characteristics, health habits and status, perception, and physical fitness. The findings of this research suggested that the progressive low intensity exercise improves the activities of the elderly, physical activity, self assessed activity, activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, social behavior of the elderly be affected by general characteristics, health habits and status, perception, and physical fitness.

        The present study was performed to investigate the prevalence rate of idiopathic scoliosis and to determine the effect of exercise training on scoliotic angle in elementary school children. In this study, two out of five elementary schools in Seosan city were chosen by random sampling. Seven hundred sixty four students (from four grade to the sixth grade student) were selected in two schools. Screening tests were conducted to find idiopathic scoliosis. Among the 764 individuals, 139 subjects who showed positive sign in physical examination took whole spine radiography. Thirty six subjects who had a curve of 10 or greater and consented to participate in the exercise program were selected for the exercise program. The exercise program was performed four times a week for 5 months. The results of this study were as follows: 1) One hundred thirty nine subjects showed positive sign in the scoliosis screening test. 2) The overall prevalence of curve of greater in X-ray finding was 8.15%. The prevalencies of curve of greater in male and female were 7.1% and 9.2%, respectively. 3) Scoliosis curves were observed at thoracic area (48.4%), at thoracolumbar area (27.4%) and at lumbar area(24.4%). 4) Right side curve was 59.7%, and left side curve was 40.3%. 5) After the 5 month exercise program for scoliosis, the Cobb's angle was significantly decreased. 6) There was no significant difference of Cobb's angle change respect to sex, grades, and scoliosis curve site. Results shown here indicates that an early detection and early exercise for scoliosis can result in decreased the Cobb's angle in elementary school children.
