        A model experiment of purse seine by the circulating water tank was carried out on the changes of net shape and the tension of purseline under operation in two layer current. In the circular tank, the two layer current was made by cutting off the current of upper layer and producing the bottom current by the equipment shown in Fig. 1. The model experiment of purse sein was made on a reduced scale 1 :400, and the experiment was carried out according to the Tauti's model law. When the bottom current of O. 5 knot flows to lower part of three-eighths of net, following results are derived. The depth of sinkerline reached only about 80% of that of no current set. The horizontal shift of sinker line caused by the bottom current is maximized in tight set. The enclosed area by the floatIine immediately after the completion of set net is 61. 5% in tight set, 50. 0 % in loose set and 54. 1 % in lateral set of those in the case of no current. In the first half period of pursing, the tension of the purseline is enhenced by the bottom current and the pattern of increasing is irregular in the tension curves.

        The author investigated the relation between the catches of tuna species and the distribution of horizontal mean temperature at the Jepth of 10m and of vertical temperture sections in the different fishing grounds, using the date of catches in 1980, showing a relative good ones during six years from 1975 to 1980, and of oceanographic observations. Yellowfin and bigeye are mainly caught in South Equatorial Current regions including equatorial upwelling region in 5˚N to 5˚S, and albacore is mainly caught in Subtropical region in 20˚5 to 40˚5. The good fishing grounds of yellowfin and bigeye are made in the depth layer of 100 m to 250 m and temperature of 15˚C to 26˚C having a smooth gradient of thermocline in the Central Pacific between 180˚ and 1500W. But albacore is caught well in which the temperature of thermocline ranges from 100e to 25˚C and its gradient very smoothly. Approaching to the American Continent, the catches of yellowfin and big eye decrease because the thermocline becomes shallower and steeper at Eastern Pacific Region between 1500 and 800W.

        Physical, chemical and biological surveys on Nakdong River estuary were made from October, 1985 to September, 1986. 1. For all the seasons except summer, the sea surface temperature in northwest area of the line which linked from Seo Island to Jisim Island was I-2˚C lower than in southeast area, but in summer the sea surface temperature in northwest area was I-2˚C higher than in southeast area. On the contrary, bottom temperature of coastal area was 1˚C higher than that of oceanic area except winter. 2. Surface salinity in summer and fall has minimum value of 1. 9%0 and maximum value of 32.9%0. This large variation was caused by the runoff of the Nakdong River. Effect of less saline Nakdong River water in northwest area of the line which linked from Seo Island to Jisim Island was greater than in southeast area. A strong current rip always formed near this line. 3. The yellowish-green colored zone was observed in the Nakdong River estuary throughout the year by influence of river discharge. The characteristics of the water quality in the zone have shown that the water color was grade 7 by the Forel water-color meter, transparency was less than 4 m, and concentration of suspended solids was more than 5 mg/1. This water body was in the state of eutrophication in terms of chlorophyll-a and inorganic nitrogen concentration during summer season. 4. During the study period, total 276 taxa were identified. Most of them were diatoms and dinoflagellates which consisted of 97.5%. The component ratio of the above two groups was 84.4% and 13.1 % respectively. Diatoms were plentiful in December and dinoflagellates in July. Dominant species were Nitzschia seriata in October, Thalassiosira rotula in December, Skeletoncma costatum in April, and Nitzschia longissima in July. 5. A total of 47 zooplankton taxa was identified from the samples collected. Copepods were numerically the most important components of zooplankton communities in the study area. The domir:ant copepod species were Paracalanus parvus, Acartia clausi and Temora turbinata. Noctiluca scintillans was the next important component. The other zooplankton with minor abundance were Cladocera. Sagitta spp., Cnidaria, Mysidacea, Lucifer spp. and Amphipoda. 6. During the study period, fishes from 47 families and 87 species were sampled in th~ study area. The four most abundant fish species were Rep~mucen//'s valencicnnei, Leiognathus n~cha!is, Amblychaeturicllthys hexanema and Sardirel/a zun:zsi. The fish species of the secondary importance in abundance were Cynoglossus joyneri, Sillago sihama, Engra~lis japonicus, Encdrias nebulos'l, Acanthogobius flavimanus, Trichiurus lepturus, LiParis tanai/ai, Cynagloss//'s interruptus, Aj)ogon line:z!us, Thrissz la 1l.'1la!ensis, and Limanda yokohamac.

        Uederwater ambient noise was measured at the set net in the Neung-Po Eay. The environment characteristics depend upon oceanographic conditions of sound propagation and its implication on the source of ambient noise. The results of measurement and analysis were as follows: 1. The frequency of the maximum noise level of two passenger. vessels was around 300 Hz. The spectrum level of the fast vessel (the Air-Ferry) was lower than the little slow vessel (the Olympic) between 50-150 Hz in frequences. 2. The spectrum level of the surface in the playground of the set net was lower than the deeper water till 500 Hz, but over that frequency the level was getting lower as the depth was deep. 3. The spectrum level outside the bag of the set net was greater than the inside between 50 and 700 Hz, but over 1,500 Hz the level inside the bag was higher than the outside. 4. The spectrum level of the outside of the breeding tank was higher than the inside in the daytime. However at night opposite phenomenon occurs.

        The characteristics of tidal exchange in Masan Bay were studied on the basis of salinity observations and current measurements in the summer of 1985. The exchange ratio of the sea water was calculated using three different formulas. The tidal exchange rate was estimated to be smaller than that of another bays in the southern coast of Korea. The tidal exchange ratios in Masan Bay at spring tide were deduced to be 2.4-11.7%. While those at neap tide were 2.0-9.1%. Though tidal range of neap tide is smaller than that of spring tide. the tidal exchange ratio in the bay can be increased in case of highly stratified vertical structure.

        This paper describes on the measurement of the deck vibration produced by the main engine vibration of stern trawler MjS SAE-BA-DA (2,275GT, 3,600PS) while the ship is cruising and drifting. The obtained results are as follows; 1. The deck vibration level was the highest point at vertical line which pass main engine and the lowest point at vertical line which pass top bridge while the crusing. 2. The vibration source level of the main engine, screw shaft and screw propeller were respectively 110, 90 and 80% while the crusing. 3. The main deck vibration pressure level at the check points 2, 20, 30, 40, 60, 70, 80, 86m from the bow to stern was respectively 9, 8, 7, 10, 22, 45, 18, 23%. 4. The frequency distributions of the rr.ain engine, screw shaft, screw propeller vibration were from 3 Hz to 10 KHz, predominant frequency was 1 KHz, each vibration accelration the highest level were respectively 1. 3, 0.8, 0.5 mm/s2. 5. The predominant frequency distributions of the main deck, second deck, bridge deck and top bridge deck-s vibration were from 10 to 30 Hz, and each vibration accelration level were respectively 0.7, 0.05, 0.07, 0.04 mm/s2.

        This paper investigates on the performance of liquid magnetic compass measuring the concomitant angle of the directional system by the kind of compass and the coefficiant of viscosity of the liquid of ones in accordance with the turning angular velocity of the compass bowl in artificial horizontal magnetic fields. The obtained results are as follows; 1. The concomitant angle is to be in proportion to the coefficiant of viscosity of the liquid of compass and the turning angular velocity of the compass bowl, but ones is to be in contrary proportion to the magnetic moment of the magnetic needle and the horizontal geomagnetic. 2. The overdevelopment of the concomitant angle keeps on regularly at any optional degree in the turning angular velocity overπ radian per minute, but varies periodically at 180 degree below 3 π radian per minute.

        The fishing conditions of flying squid, ommastrePhes barsram(Lesueur), in the North Pacific Ocean was studied based on the horizontal water temperature data, satellite data from NOAA and statistical data of flying squid fisheries which were collected from 1980 to 1984. The obtained results were as follows; 1. Since 1979, the Korean drift giIlnet fishery for flying squid was launched in North Pacific. Number of operating vessel and catch of flying squid increased gradually every year. The number of vessels were 111 and their annual catches were 42, 977 M/T in 1984. Therefore, Korean drift giIlnet fishery for this species has played an important role in the products of Korean high-sea fisheries. 2. In the beginning of the fisheries, fishing grounds was formed in the west of long. 1800E. In 1982, in consequence of the center which extended eastward, the fishing ground was formed long. 166˚W in the central North Pacific Ocean. Since 1983, the fishing grounds were formed as far as long. 161˚W. The range of general fishing season in the central North Pacific was from June to August. After september, fishing ground was shifted to the west, in the Northwestern Pacific. 3. The Predominant fishing season for the flying squid was August through January of the coming year. Optimum water temperature for flying sguid at surface layer in the Pacific Ocean ranged from 11 ˚e to 17˚e in winter, 13˚e to 17˚e in spring, 12. 8˚C to 19.7˚e in summer and 1O.6˚e -18.7˚e in fall. 4. In summer, the Oceanographic condition in the North Pacific Ocean showed that the water temperature at surface layer was lower in 1980, 1983 and higher in 1981, 1982 and 1984 as compared with mean annual water temperature. 5. The characteristics df oceanographic conditions in the fluation, disformation, mixing and other factors of the Kuroshio and Oyashio currents, which have considerably influenced upon the water masses of the areas. 6. The data and information on surface thermal Structure interpreted from Infrared Satellite Imaginary from NOAA-7 and NOAA-8 are very available in estimating water temperature on the areas and investigating the major fishing grounds. 7. According to the fisheries statics of Japanese drift gilInet, the annual catches of flying squid considerably decreased from 225, 942 M/T in 1983 to 133, 217 M/T in 1984. 8. The fishing grounds in the central North Pacific in several fishing seasons were formed as follows: In June, the initial fishing season, the fishing grounds were formed in the vicinity of lat. 35 - 40oN, the central North Pacific east of 179˚E. In July, the fishing ground were formed in the wide arEa of the central North Pacific north of 400N and long. 174˚E-145˚W In Auguest, concentrative fishing operation carried out in :he central North Pacific north of 43˚N and East of 165˚W. On the other hand, in September, main fishing grounds were disappeared and moved to the west.

        This is a basic study of further investigating the effect of oceanographic conditons, such as bottom profile, currents, and temperature, to the fish migrating course around the set-net. The survey was held at Dojang Po, southern part of Geoje Island, from July to October in 1985. There was a sea valley of which depth was 20 to 40 meters around the set-net. Near the bottom of that sea valley, there was different current pattern to the upper layer. In the sea calm condition of July and October, the vertical profiles of current and water temperature were simple. But in rough condition of September, they were complicated because of wind tuburance.

        On the slamming analysis of ship design the data for the impact pressure acted on the forward bottom of a ship are needed. Furthermore impact pressure is given by the function of both the hull form coefficient and relative velocity. In this papper. a simplified method to estimate hull form coefficient by perso;,al computer (p. c.) is studied. This numerical analysis was applied to the model of the Mariner type. and then the result by the p. c. was compared with that by IBM 7090 computer. Main results obtained are as follows: 1. The result by the developed p. c. method had fairly good agreement with that by conventional large computer (IBM 7090) within 2% error. 2. This developed method' by p. c. may be applied to the initial estimation of the K-value because of the close agreement between the ship lines by the results of p. c. and that of input.

        The transfer matrix method has been extensively used to analyze the vibration problem. The final stage in this method is to find out solutions which make the frequency determinant zero. However, the frequency determinant includes the exponential terms and it causes instability to calculation and increases error. Recently the frontal transfer matrix method was suggested by Okada to heighten stability and effectivity in calculation. This paper applied the frontal transfer method to both the beam and torsional system, and confirmed stability and effectivity in comparsion with the transfer matrix method and the Holzer method.

        In this paper, the I-resistance curve of low-carbon steel with 3 mm thickness was investigated for various crack ratios. The experiments were carried out for the center cracked tension (CCT) specimen with about 50 mm width on an instron machine. The plane stress fracture toughness obtained by the Simpson's formula was Ii. = 24.96 kgffmm. Simpson's formula which considers crack growth in obtaining J integral showed more conservative lin than Rice's and Sumpter's. For materials that may be approximated by the Ramberg and Osgood stress strain law, the relevant crack parameters like the J integral, load line displacement are approximately normalized. Crack driving forces in terms of the I integral are computed for low-carbon steel CCT specimen using the above estimation scheme. Comparison of the prediction with actual experimental measurements by Simpson's formula showed good agreement for several different sized specimen.

        The steady potential flow about a TP 620 hydrofoil, flying in air above a dynamic water surface. is calculated by the one dimensional theory as the clearance-to-length ratio tends to very small. The characteristics on water surfare effects of air supported TP 620 hydrofoil over water are compared NACA 4412, NACA 66 and plate. respectively. It is found that using the TP 620 hydrofoil is superior lift coefficients. Moreover for trailing edge shape of the hydrofoil, high lift coefficients at 1 Fmn can be obtained.

        A bore is a transition between different uniform flows of water. If a long wave of elevation travels in shallow water it steepens and forms a bore. The bore is undular if the change in surface elevation of the wave is less than 0.28 of the original depth of water. This paper describes the growth of an undular bore from a long wave which forms a gentle transition between a uniform flow and still water. A physical account of its development is followed by the results of numerical calculations. Finite-difference approximations are used in the partial differential equations of motion. For undular bores, numerical calculations show that (i) the relationship between relative elevation and relative velocity given by long wave theory is approached for an undular bore, (ii) the amplitude of first crest of an undular bore approaches a finite limit approximately at an exponential rate, and (iii) the distance between the first two crests increases without bound, approximately logarithmically.

        It is very important for a navigator on bridge to know the maneuverability of his ship sufficiently at sea. Generally, the data of a turning circle test have long been used to study and evaluate the maneuverability of a ship. But referring only the data of the turning circle test method, he can not evaluate his ship's maneuvering characteristics sufficiently. So nowaday the test method added Z test to turning circle test for more detail references is considered to be desirable. In this paper, the authors performed PAL test and Z test together in order to study the maneuverability of M. S.Pusan 403, training ship of the National Fisheries University of Pusan. According to the results of PAL test, the rudder effect in port rudder angle of the M. S. Pusan 403 was found to be more effective than that in starboard one, because her changing amounts of angular velocity, turning radius and tangent speed in port rudder angles were found to be larger than those of them in starboard rudder one in unsymmetry. The relation between her drift angle(.8) and rudder angle (0) was found to be changing with .8=0.640 in direct proportion. As it appeared that her calculated K'-values were smaller than the standard K'-values of different kinds of ships in accordance with her Z test, her turning ability was found to be lower. The running distance of a turn in her 10˚ Z test was about 8.3 times her own length and was found not to be exceeded the standard maneuvering distance, therefore she was considered to have good maneuverabilities synthetically.

        Optical properties of sea water were studied in the entrance of Tokyo Bay, Japan. based on the data obtained from seven oceanographic stations in June. 1985. The observation of surface irradiance and underwater irradiance of sea water for eight kind of wavelength (378, 422, 481, 513, 570, 621, 653. 677nm) of sun light was conducted using the underwater irradiameter (Isigawa # SR-8). The mean att;enuation coefficient of the sea water was appeared to be 0.245 (0.042-0.776) and the attenuation co~fficient of the sea water for wavelength appeared such as 0.227 for 378 nm, 0.186 for 422 nm. O. 175 for 481 nm. O. 176 for 513 nm. O. 185 for 570 nm, 0.337 for 621 nm. O. 321 for 653 nm, O. 348 for 677 nm. The transparency was 7.0 m (5.5-9 m). water color was 10 (8.0-13.0) in the study area and the sun altitude was 60.95˚ (43.610-75.500). The relationship between attenuation coefficient (K) and transparency (D) was K = 2.63/ D (1.28/ D- 4. 87/D). The rate of light penetration for eight kind of wave Ie nth (378, 422. 481. 513. 570, 621, 653, 677 nm) were computed with reference to the surface light intensity respectively. The mean rate of light penetration in proportion to depths were 68.63% (46.02-86.07%) in 1 m layer, 18.40% (2.07 -48.48%) in 5m layer, 4.82% (0.042-22.30%) in 10m layer and 1.35% (0.01I-7.42%) in 20m layer. The rate of light penetration at the transparency layer with reference to the surface light intensity was shown as 10.39% (0.77-27.46%).

        In order to investigate the performance for the mackerel purse seine of one boat purse seiner using in the sea area of Cheju Island, a model net is made of the scale of 1/400 of its full scale, and model test on the shape of net and the tension of purse line is carried out in the stagnant water channel of the circulating water tank. Designing and testing for the model net are based on the Tauti's law. The obtained results are as follows; 1. The sinking rate of net is maximized the value of 6.40 m/min from 5 to 10 minutes after shooting net, and the mean value is 6.13 m/min. 2. The enclosed area formed with the float line after pursing operation is 76-84% of the area which is formed immediately after the shooting operation. At that time, purse seine is pulled inward the circle of surrounding net about 26.5% of the diameter. 3. In operating, when longitudinal section area of the central part of the net is maximized, the split area of both the wing-ends is 31-32% of the former. 4. When the time for the completing of pursing is 20 minutes, the maximum tension of the purse line is about 10.2 tons.

        Even though it is well known that the tidal current in the East China Sea rotates clockwise, few report can be found about the precise pattern of it. To furnish some information available for the stow net fishermen, the author carried out the observation over 235 semidiurnal tidal cycle to investigate the pattern of the set and the rate of tidal current in the Korean fishing section 250 and 494, by reading the current meter and by tracing the corner reflectors with radar onboard the anchored obsen'ation vessel, from May 12, 1984 through February 27, 1986. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The mean semidiurnal tidal cycle was 12 h 20 m during spring tide, and 12 h 30 m during neap tide. 2. The mean interval from the calculated time of high water until the current began to set north was 2 h 30 m and 2 h 15 m in the fishing section 250 and 494 respectively, and the mean interval from the time of low water current began to set south was about 2 h 0 m in both sections. 3. In comparison of the occupied times to vary the set from one of 8 principal bearing points to the neighboring one, the shortest was while the set varied from N to NE and S to SW in the section 250 and 494 respectively. Contrary the longest was while the set varied from SE to S and from W to NW in the section 250 and 494 respectively. 4. In comparison of the rate while the set varied from one of 8 principal bearing points to the neighboring one, the fastest was while the set varied from SE to Sand NW to N in the section 250, and E to SE and W to NW in the section 494. Contrary the slowest was while the current set to NE and S W in the section 250, and N, NE and S W in the section 494.
