A new two-rowed naked waxy barley cultivar, 'Pungsanchal', was developed for split polished grains by the National Crop Experiment Station(NCES), RDA in 2001. This cultivar was derived f rom a cross between 'SB901258GG-B' and 'Suwon212' in 1991. The f ina

A new covered barley variety, 'Daeyeonbori' was developed from the cross between Milyangketbori, a stabile for machine harvest, and Olbori by the barley breeding team in the National Yeongnam Agricultural Experiment Station (NYAES) in 1999. An elite line,

The study was conducted to examine varietal variation of sweet rice- drink, `Sikhe`, made from seven glutimous rice cultivars. The alkali digestion value and protein content were significantly different among cooked rice materials, but the water absorptio

Nine accessions of red rices collected from different regions were tested for germination characteristics in relation to seed maturity and several storage conditions after harvest. No red rice seeds germinated at five days after anthesis (DAA). Wanjuaengmi (long-grain red rice) seeds at 10DAA germinated up to 30% of total samples, producing only abnormal seedlings, whereas 10D-AA-seeds of normal cultivar showed only 3.3% germinability. Some red rice seeds absorbed more water than cultivated varieties, and showed less decrease in germination rate than cultivated varieties when seeds were exposed at -1, -5 or -10~circC for up to 60 hours after soaking. Red rice accessions maintained more than 95% germination when stored. indoor for 120 days. Two short-grain red rices showed about 50% germination when overwintered in the field, while other long-grain red rices and cultivated rices germinated less than 10%. Germination of seeds overwintered in clay loam soil was lower than that in loam soil, and seeds on surface germinated less than those in 1~7cm depth

Dongseok Kim & Yong-Ha Kim. 1999. Cost of Merge and Move. Studies in Modern Grammar 17, 33-66. In this paper we argue against Chomsky`s (1995, 1998) assumption that Merge preempts Move, and claim that Merge and Move have the same status with respect to economy. We assume, following Collins (1997), that Merge involves copy and Merge just like Move, and the unique difference is that Move involves copying an already introduced element, whereas Merge involves copying a new element from the lexicon. Under this assumption, Numeration is unnecessary and Procrastinate is eliminated in favor of local economy. On the basis of Object Shift and multiple specifier constructions in Korean, we have shown that Merge as well as Move apply as Last Resort, and that whether to apply Merge or Move is contingent on the properties of the features that must be satisfied at each stage of a derivation. As a principle to decide between them, we have proposed Narrow Domain Principle and proved it successfully works on a wide range of relevant constructions.

Kim, Yong-Ha. 1999. Scrambling and Economy of Representation. Studies in Modern Grammar 16, 1-38. Scrambling is known to have mixed properties of A-movement and A´-movement. One of the defining characteristics of A-scrambling is that scrambled elements can bind anaphors in their c-command domain. On the other hand, A´-scrambling has the undoing property, which can be best attributed to the reconstniction effect and hence is a typical A`-movement property. Work in the minimalist program generally explains these dual properties of scrambling by assuming that there are two kinds of scrambling in the fast place. However, it is very dubious to treat seemingly identical operations as different ones. Thus, it seems reasonable to take a unified approach to scrambling if there is any possible way to do. In this paper, we suggest a unified way of explaining the dual properties of scrambling in the framework of Chomsky`s (1995) minimalist program. We regards scrambling as a case of MSC. The unique feature of scrambling, under our approach, is that its identity as A-movement or A´-movement is not determined a priori. Rather, scrambled elements are only affected by deleted strong features of functional heads. What is predicted from our approach is that scrambling can take place only when all necessary feature-checking is completed.
