The steamed and freeze-dried mature silkworm powder (SMSP) is developed by the Rural Development Administration (RDA) in 2012. In here, the nutritional components of SMSP produced by rearing white-silk cocoon silkworm, Baekokjam, at high temperatures were compared and analyzed with those produced under optimal temperature conditions of 25°C. The weight of silkworms reared in a high-temperature environment increased compared to that under an optimal condition. However, when the silkworms matured, the difference in weight according to temperature conditions narrowed. As for the growth rate, the 5th instar silkworms grew a day earlier in a high-temperature environment than in an optimal. SMSPs produced in a high-temperature environment showed a difference when comparing the nutritional components with the SMSPs in an optimal condition. Overall, high-temperature-reared SMSPs contained about twice as high carbohydrates and slightly lower protein and fat than the optimal-reared SMSPs. These results show that SMSPs produced in a high-temperature environment have a difference in growth rate and nutritional composition from those produced under an optimal condition.
19 (BC, Before Corona), (AC, After Corona)
Recent incidents of state terrorism, including the assassination of Kim Jong-Nam, the murder (and attempted murder) of persons with strong ties to Russia, and the Jamal Khashoggi assassination, demonstrate cruelty while implying the involvement of the state, unlike other acts of terrorism since the Second World War. This trend denies the efforts of the international community, which has suppressed physical punishment including the death penalty in modern times and has achieved advances in human rights and humanitarianism under contemporary international law. Accordingly, this paper utilizes Michel Foucault’s indications regarding prison to reconsider recent cases of state terrorism from a broader perspective while taking into consideration the historical background of conventional terrorism and the development of international terrorism-related treaties.
Recently, climate change has been increasingly reported to be associated with vector-borne diseases including West Nile Virus, avian poxvirus, bluetongue virus. These diseases, which are of medical and veterinary importance, are known to affect the health status of wildlife. In this sense, it is vital to understand the distribution of mosquitoes and biting midges as the disease-vectors in the habitat of wildlife. In order to do this, nocturnal insects were collected using CDC Mini Night Traps (cat. no. 2836BXQ, BioQuip, CA, USA) in the coniferous and deciduous forest near the ponds in National Institute of Ecology (NIE) on the weekdays from June to September. As a result, 920 mosquitoes belonging to 13 species of 7 genus and 5,129 biting midges belonging to 8 species of Culicoides were collected in total. For mosquitoes, Aedes vexans nipponii and Culex orientalis were the predominant species consisting about two thirds of all the mosquitoes. For biting midges, Culicoides arakawae was the prevalent species present and 97.3% of this kind appeared to have preference to feed on birds. The number of mosquitoes collected remained relatively constant as opposed to the number of biting midges which showed the tendency to fluctuate - the second or third week of each month had the highest number of Culicoides spp. Forest ecology had more diverse distribution of species than livestock farms and reflected the abundance of birds in NIE. In addition, further evaluation of the effect of environment, such as climatic factors, on the ecology of these disease vectors would be required.
In this study, consumer acceptance and sensory intensity evaluations were performed on sponge cakes prepared with domestic and imported cake flours. Specific volume data as well as cross-sectional photograph observations confirmed that the imported flour sample group had greater volume than the domestic flour groups. The imported flour sample group also had a significantly (p<0.05) higher mean overall acceptability score at 5.82; however, it was not significantly different from the domestic white flour sample group (5.40). There was no significant difference in overall texture acceptance between samples prepared with imported and domestic white flours; however, their scores were significantly higher than that of the domestic whole flour group (p<0.05). Consumer acceptances of color significantly decreased as the orders of cake group prepared using the imported, domestic white, and domestic whole flours with the values of 6.48, 5.72 and 4.61, respectively (p<0.05). Acceptance of the air cell and the acceptance and intensity of sweetness did not show significant differences between the imported and domestic white flour group.
Tooth loss in elderly is mainly caused by alveolar bone loss via severe periodontitis. Although the severity of periodontitis is known to be affected by age, the aging process or the genetic changes during the aging of periodontal tissue cells are not well characterized. In this study, we investigated the effect of in vitro aging on the change of gene expression pattern in periodontal fibroblasts. Gingival fibroblasts (GF) and periodontal ligament fibroblasts (PDL) were obtained from two young patients and replicative senescence was induced by sequential subcultivation. When more than 90% cells were positively stained with senescence-associated β-galactosidase, those cells were regarded as aged cells. In aged GF and PDL, the level of phosphorylated retinoblastoma (RB) and p16INK4A protein was significantly decreased and increased, respectively. However, the protein level of p53 and p21, well known senescence-inducing genes, did not increase in aged GF and PDL. Although P27Kip1 and p15INK4B, another cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors, were reported to be involved in replicative senescence of human cells, they were decreased in aged GF and PDL. Because senescent cells showed flattened and enlarged cell shape and are known to have increased focal adhesion, we examined the protein level of several integrins. Aged GF and PDL showed increased protein level of integrin α2, αu, and β1. When the gene expression profiles of actively proliferating young cells and aged cells were compared by cDNA microarray of 3,063 genes and were confirmed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, 7 genes and 15 genes were significantly and commonly increased and decreased, respectively, in aged GF and PDL. Among them, included are the genes that were known to be involved in the regulation of cell cycle, gene transcription, or integrin signaling. The change of gene expression pattern in GF and PDL was minimally similar to that of oral keratinocyte. These results suggest that p16INK4A/RB might be involved in replicative senescence of periodontal fibroblasts and the change of gene expression profile during aging process is cell type specific.
Calcium concentration in the bone resorption lacunae is high and is in the mM concentration range. Both osteoblast and osteoclast have calcium sensing receptor in the cell surface, suggesting the regulatory role of high extracellular calcium in bone metabolism. In vitro, high extracellular calcium stimulated osteoclastogenesis in coculture of mouse osteoblasts and bone marrow cells. Therefore we examined the genes that were commonly regulated by both high extracellular calcium and 1.25(OH)₂vitaminD₃(VD3) by using mouse oligo 11 K gene chip. In the presence of 10 mM [Ca²+]e or 10 nM VD3, mouse calvarial osteoblasts and bone marrow cells were co-cultured for 4 days when tartrate resistant acid phosphatase-positive multinucleated cells start to appear. Of 11,000 genes examined, the genes commonly regulated both by high extracellular calcium and by VD3 were as follows; 1) the expression of genes which were osteoclast differentiation markers or were associated with osteoclastogenesis were up-regulated both by high extracellular calcium and by VD3; trap, mmp9, car2, ctsk, ckb, atp6b2, tm7sf4, rab7, 2) several chemokine and chemokine receptor genes such as sdf1, scya2, scyb5, scya6, scya8, scya9, and ccr1 were up-regulated both by high extracellular calcium and by VD3, 3) the genes such as mmp1b, mmp3 and c3 which possibly stimulate bone resorption by osteoclast, were commonly up-regulated, 4) the gene such as c1q and msr2 which were related with macrophage function, were commonly down-regulated, 5) the genes which possibly stimulate osteoblast differentiation and/or mineralization of extracellular matrix, were commonly down-regulated; slc8a1, admr, plod2, lox, fosb, 6) the genes which possibly suppress osteoblast differentiation and/or mineralization of extracellular matrix, were commonly up-regulated; s100a4, npr3, mme, 7) the genes such as calponin 1 and tgfbi which possibly suppress osteoblast differentiation and/or mineralization of extracellular matrix, were up-regulated by high extracellular calcium but were down-regulated by VD3. These results suggest that in coculture condition, both high extracellular calcium and VD3 commonly induce osteoclastogenesis but suppress osteoblast differentiation/mineralization by regulating the expression of related genes.
Concerns remain regarding the biocompatibility and adverse effects of dental casting alloys. The aim of this study was to understand the cytopathogenic effect of metal ions, which might be released from dental alloys, on oral squamous carcinoma(OSC) cells. The cellular morphology, viability, the type of cell death and molecular change in response to metal ion salt solutions including aluminum(Al), cobalt(Co), copper(Cu) and nickel(Ni) were examined. The values for the metal ions with the exception of AI were estimated to be between 400 and 600μM. The cells treated with the metal ions showed apoptotic change with the exception of Al ions. Metal ion-induced apoptosis was further confirmed using flow cytometric analysis. This study showed that the cytotoxicity and the mode of cell death by metal ions clearly depend on the cell type, the type of metal ion and the duration of exposure. The protein level of Rb, a tumor suppressor that affects apoptosis para-doxically, was higher in the cells treated with Co, Cu and Ni. It is believed that apoptosis and cell damage in the OSC cells treated with Co, Cu or Ni can be evoked by the regulation of Rb.
Moving sport tourism refers to travel that combines sport activity and tours to a particular destination. Although moving sport tourism is one of the fastest growing segments of the sport tourism industry, it is still lack of relatedknowledge and academic studies. Hence, this study is conducted to explore the characteristics of moving sport tourism and to provide implications for sport tourism industry and future research. For this, ten participants who regularly participated in bicycle tours for the last 10 years were recruited for this study. The sample consisted of 9 males and 1 female. The average age of the participants was 44.6 years of which all but 2 had a full-time job. The average period of participating in bicycle tour was 7.9 years. For analysing data, content analysis approach was used. Interviews were tape recoded and data were multiple reviewed to identify the similar themes and to categorize them into conceptual constructs. Results suggest two requirements of moving sport tourism(moving and concurrent), three characteristics of moving sport tourism(self-directed, exploring, non-linear, purposive-riding, partial competitive, cultural touring) and two categories of moving sport tourism(full moving sport tourism and partial moving sport tourism). Implications for sport tourism industry and future studies were discussed.
‘Haeoreum’, a new variety of Hibiscus syriacus was selected from the progenies of artificial breeding between ‘Bulkot’, as a mother plant, and ‘Wonhwa’, as a pollenizer, at the Korea Forest Research Institute in 2006. The preliminary, advanced and regional trials for evaluation and selection of this variety were carried out from 2012 to 2013. Investigated morphological characteristics showed that ‘Haeoreum’ is a simple flower type and has bell shape in open type of corolla. The diameter of flower is about 12.8mm, and the white petals are slightly folded each other. The length of red eye zone is very long, about 26.0mm. Leaf type is in oval shape, and leaf thickness, glossy level and the shape of leaf base is medium, medium and rounded, respectively. Its blooming period each year lasted more than 80 days, and the quantity of bloom is large in normal condition. In addition, it showed faster growth performance compared to the similar varieties, about 90cm per growing season in tree height. According to all these characteristics, the new variety ‘Haeoreum’ could be useful for large container plants or street trees.
