The effects of barnyard millet (Echinochloa spp.) content (10~30%) on wheat flour dough and noodle properties were investigated. As the amount of barnyard millet increased, the particle size and ash content of mixed flour increased, while lightness tended to decrease. The gelatinization characteristics of millet flour showed higher peak viscosity, holding strength, final viscosity, and setback compared with wheat flour. There was significant positive correlation between protein content and sedimentation volume, as well as between protein content and water absorption. As the amount of barnyard millet increased, hardness, springiness and cohesiveness of wet noodles tended to decrease. From the results of sensory evaluation, composite flours (addition up to 20% barnyard millet) were rated with a quality score for taste and overall acceptance which was comparable with the control flour.
The edible barnyard millets(Echinochloa spp.) which have essentially vanished in the farmhouses environment and in agricultural germplasm were evaluated with the aim of restoration as a crop. The proximate components and mineral elements of milled millet were nutritionally similar or better than brown rice, and the vitamin contents of B1 and B2 exceeded those of rice by 1.3 times and 2.3 times, respectively. β-Carotene which is absent from brown rice was detected at levels ranging from 15~31 ㎍ in millet samples. Nine essential amino acids, including histidine and arginine and eight non-essential amino acids, such as aspartic acid were detected. The sum of all amino acids was determined to be IEC518>525>510 in the range of 69~106 ㎎/g. Analysis of physiological active substances via their electron donating ability(EDA) revealed values ranging from 3.4~8.2%, with the total polyphenol component being 51.1~69.4 ㎎/g and α-glucosidase inhibition ability determined as 8.3~10.9%. In terms of agronomical characteristics and yields of barnyard millet, three millet varieties(IEC510, 518, and 525) were suitable as edible crops. IEC525 was selected as optimum variety for cultivation on the basis of nutritional ingredients, physiological active substances, and yield.
'Cheongpungheukhyangchal' New aromatic, black pericarp and glutinous rice variety was developed by the rice breeding team of Chungbuk Agricultural Research and Extension Services, in 2012. This cultivar was derived from a cross between 'Shindongjin' as a grain quality source and 'Heugseonchal' as a black glutinous and aromatic source. The donor parent, 'Sindongjin' has been backcrossed one time with recurrent parent 'Heugseonchal' and selected by the pedigree breeding method, until F6 generation. As a result, a promising line, CBR11-2-4-3, was advanced and designated as the name of ‘CBR L3’ in 2009. The maturity period of this cultivar took approximately 168 days from seedling to heading. This cultivar has about 15 tillers per hill and 115 spikelet numbers per panicle. Ripening ratio is about 76.5% and 1000 grain weight is 27.2 g in brown rice. Milled rice of 'Cheongpungheukhyangchal' has trait of glutinous and aromatic endosperm. It has higher anthocyanin content compared to that of black pigmented check cultivar ‘Heugseonchal’. The yield performance of brown rice was 5.39 MT/ha in local adaptability test for three years. ‘Cheongpungheukhyangchal’ is adaptable to central plain and southern mid-mountainous area of Korea.
The purpose of this study was to select and to recommend the optimum rice with the newly developed varieties at 11 agricultural technology service center(ATSC) in ChungBuk province. The newly bred 18 varieties were evaluated rice yields and quality, including rice taste at each districts from 2007 to 2009. In the overall consideration, Hopum-byeo was selected as the best rice variety in Chungju, Jincheon districts, and Samkwang-byeo was choosed as the best variety in Cheongju, Eumseong, Okcheon, and Yeongdong based on the yields of rice and mechanic rice tastes. Hopum-byeo and Samkwang-byeo was recommended in Cheongwon, Goesan, and Boeun districts. Unkwang-byeo was selected as optimum variety in Jecheon, and Danyang districts.
Bakanae disease, a typical seed-borne disease of rice, caused by Gibberella fujikuroi which affected rice quality and yields seriously throughout the country. The disease could be transmitted to other healthy plants in heading dates, and the environment-friendly agricultural practices could be one of the reasons for the outbreak of disease because of the chemical-free agriculture. Studies were conducted to investigate the effects of instrument devised to protect the bakanae disease. The newly developed device consists of aquarium heater and oxygen generator. The temperature of water remained stable as 32.6±0.9℃, and it was effectively applied to sterile seeds for high quality seedlings. In the field tests of infected seeds with bakanae disease, the ripened grain ratio decreased in the 30% infected seeds, and the yields of polished rice dropped as 28%. The secondary infection of bakanae disease was effectively prevented with 500 fold fludioxonil treatments just prior to the planting in the field.
