Considering the various health problems associated with obesity in dogs, including renal diseases, joint disorders, and skin diseases, effective management strategies and guidelines are urgently needed. This situation has led to a growing demand for veterinary medications aimed at addressing obesity in dogs. However, the field faces a significant hurdle due to the absence of standardized guidelines for assessing the effectiveness of these anti-obesity medications in dogs. In response to this gap, the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA) in Korea has made a crucial step by introducing clinical trial guidelines to evaluate the efficacy of treatments for canine obesity, specifically aimed at approving veterinary medicinal products. The guidelines outlined the selection criteria for target dogs, highlighting the importance of consistency within the control and treated groups. Treatment efficacy is subsequently evaluated by physical examination, body fat reduction, and biochemical indicators. In addition, the guidelines cover dosage and administration, monitoring after dosing, and statistical analysis. By doing so, this guideline not only highlights the significance of the APQA’s initiative in improving the care of obese dogs but also provides practical insights to enhance the standardization and effectiveness of clinical trials in veterinary medicine.
The Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency conducts a targeted sampling plan and analysis for veterinary drugs within the country every year. Target compounds included tetrachlorvinphos as an organophosphate, diminazene as an anti-infective medication, ketoprofen as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, triclabendazole and clorsulon as flukicides in 2022. These compounds were not included in National Residues Program (NRP), despite their high sales ranking. A total of 94 bovine muscle samples and 20 equine muscle samples were collected from various locations across the country. The analysis of target compounds in muscle was performed using LC-MS/MS coupled with Food code 8.3.1 revised in 2022. A 2 g sample of muscle tissue was extracted using a water: acetonitrile (1:4, v/v) solution, then cleaned up with C18 and hexane saturated with acetonitrile. Compounds were separated with C18 column and mobile phases consisted of 0.1% formic acid in water (A) and 0.1% formic acid in acetonitrile (B). All analytes exhibited good linearity with correlation coefficients (R2) higher than 0.992. The limit of quantification (LOQ) of these compounds ranged from 0.21 to 2.79 μg/kg except for diminazene (3.85~6.86 μg/kg). The average recoveries of these analytes were 89.45~129.13% in muscle at spiked level of 10 or 20 μg/kg. Relative standard deviations (%) (intra-day and inter-day) were lower than 20% for all target compounds, except for diminazene and triclabendazole, whose intra-day RSD % was slightly higher than 20% in equine muscle. Testing confirmed that all 94 bovine and 20 equine muscle samples from 9 provinces were free from residues of veterinary drugs. Monitoring of compounds not included in the NRP should continue to ensure consumer health and food safety.
The objective of this study is to estimate the dietary exposure of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibezofurans (PCDD/Fs) of Korean population via milk and meat using a probabilistic exposure assessment model. Total 319 raw milk and meat samples collected in the period 2006-2008 from nationwide Korea were measured the concentrations of 17 PCDD/Fs. Distributions of dietary exposure of 7 age subgroups to PCDD/Fs from the commodities were estimated probabilistically using Monte Carlo simulations. Dietary exposure groups were divided as lower, medium and high consumer subgroups according to the consumption of each commodity. The amounts of dietary exposures of Korean population subgroups were compared to the provisional maximum tolerable monthly intake (PTMI) recommended by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives and Contaminants (JECFA). The mean PCDD/Fs concentrations in raw milk and meat of beef, prok and chicken were measured as 0.501, and 0.022~0.150pg WHO-TEQ/g, respectively. Dietary exposure of children was significantly higher than that of adults due to their high milk consumption per body weight (BW). Dietary intake of PCDD/Fs of the Korean populations estimated ranged from 0.154 to 1.248 pg WHO- TEQ/kg BW/day for high consumers (the 97.5th percentile) at the upper bound. Dietary intakes of average population of various subgroups were below the half of PTMI, but those of higher consumers were found exceeding or comparable to PTMI at the upper bound level. This study also suggests that the estimated PCDD/Fs concentrations in milk and meat are comparable to those reported in previous studies. Probabilistic assessment model for PCDD/Fs exposure in meat and milk commodities could be used to estimate the exposure of PCDD/Fs in Korean population for the development of risk mangement mesaures for PCDD/Fs in meat and milk.
This study aims to establish a modified analytical method with sensitivity and reliability for streptomycin (STP) and dihydrostreptomycin (DHS) of residues level in pig tissues, plasma and urine by LC-MS/MS on the basis of previous studies. The mass parameters of quantitative and qualitative ions for STP and DHS were optimized using multiple reaction monitoring in positive mode. The separation of compounds was conducted using BEH Amide column according to material’s characteristics. The analytes in plasma were extracted with only organic solvents. In muscle and kidney, KH2PO4 buffer solution containing 2% CCl3COOH and EDTA-Na was used as extraction solvent. The WCX cartridege was selected as SPE cartridge in considering high recoveries for STP and DHS. The analytes in urine were extracted by organic solvents with acid and addition of EDTA. The limits of detection (LODs) in STP and DHS ranged 0.45~3.66 μg/kg and 0.22~0.78 μg/kg, respectively. The limits of quantification (LOQs) were 1.35~11.10 μg/kg in STP and 0.66~2.36 μg/kg in DHS. The recoveries (%) were 94.29~104.5% in STP and 92.32~108.45% in DHS except for plasma with lower values (61.45/68.5%, respectively). In the precision evaluation, the coefficient of variation (CV, %) of STP showed <10.50% on intra-day and <18.04% on inter-day. The CV (%) of DHS showed <8.42% on intra-day, whereas <17.98% on inter-day. The modified method is reliable for continuous residual monitoring in pig to ensure food safety for consumer’s health. In addition, this method could be used in study relation to residue depletion and pharmacokinetics of veterinary drug.

The Korean National Residue Program (KNRP) use three plans for the sampling of domestic meats: monitoring, surveillance, and exploratory testing. We analyzed the results of monitoring and surveillance for residual veterinary drugs and pesticides in meat during 2012 and 2013. KNRP targets food-producing animals including cattle, pigs, chickens, ducks, sheep (goats), and horses. Sampling mainly focuses on veterinary drugs and pesticide residues found in tissues such as muscle, kidney, and liver. A total of 548 residue violations occurred between 2012 and 2013, mainly in pigs (427 violations) and cattle (113 violations). The most commonly found compounds were antimicrobials such as penicillins, fluoroquinolones, aminoglycosides, tetracyclines, sulfonamides, and macrolides. Pig residue violations were mainly for the presence of penicillins (34%) and fluoroquinolones (28%), while most residue violations in cattle were due to the presence of penicillins (32%) and aminoglycosides (27%). The overall rates of violations were 0.21% in 2012 and 0.10% in 2013. A major cause of violations was the failure to follow the appropriate withdrawal periods (68.8%). The results of the KNRP were analyzed to provide information on agricultural chemical residues that are of public health concern and to help control and prevent residue violations for ensuring food safety.
Mycotoxins, such as aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), deoxynivalenol (DON), fumonisin B1 (FMB1), ochratoxin A, T2 toxin, and zearalenone, are found in numerous vegetables. Mycotoxin accumulation in food and feed poses serious health risks to humans and animals because of carcinogenic, mutagenic, teratogenic, and toxic properties. In addition, mycotoxins cause large economic losses in commercial crop production, food and feed processing, and animal husbandry worldwide. In this study, an analytical method for the simultaneous analysis of the levels of AFB1, DON, and FMB1 in cow blood with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was developed and validated. AOZTM and Myco6in1TM multitoxin immunoaffinity columns and an OasisTM reversed-phase solid-phase extraction Hydrophilic-Lipophilic-Balanced columns were used to purify and concentrate the blood samples. Extracts that contained AFB1, DON, and FMB1 had average recovery of 64.0%, 98.0%, and 89.9%, respectively. In conclusion, we used LC-MS/MS to detect several important toxicological mycotoxins in cow blood. The multimycotoxin method, which detected and quantified the levels of AFB1, DON, and FMB1 can be used in animal pilot studies to monitor simultaneous exposure to major mycotoxins.
This paper investigated the tearn-teaching at three primary schools in Korea. The data consisted of classroom audio-recordings, in-class observations and post-observation interviews. This study first examined the degree to which Teaching English through English (TEE) was practiced by Native English Teachers (NETs) and Korean English Teachers (KETs) and the extent to which each case fit five conditions for optimal language learning environments: interaction with an authentic audience; opportunity for the negotiation of meaning; exposure to creative and varied L2; production of creative and varied L2; and engagement in authentic tasks (Egbert & Hanson-Smith, 1999). The main findings were that in five different observation sites, as expected, L I was rarely used in NET classes, but was used in 28% of utterances in KET classes, often to perform functions for which L2 English could have easily been used. In addition, it was found that very few instances of NET or KET classes met any of the five conditions for optimal language learning environments. This research proposes that L2 English be maximized in class, and that teachers pay more attention to creating a learning environment that satisfies the conditions for optimal language learning.
Nanotechnology is currently receiving considerable attention in various fields of biotechnology. The uptake of nanoparticles by cells for labeling and tracking is a critical process for many biomedical therapeutic applications. However, nanoparticle labeling of porcine hematopoietic cells has not been demonstrated so far. In the present study, silica-coated nanoparticles conjugated with rhodamine B isothiocyanate (SR-RITC) were used to investigate the uptake of nanoparticles by porcine hematopoietic cells. Flow cytometric and confocal microscopic analyses reveled that the cells were efficiently internalized by the silica-coated nanoparticles. Furthermore, biocompatibility tests demonstrated that the SR nanoparticles were not cytotoxic, and they had no impact on proliferation. Our study demonstrates that silica-coated nanoparticles are taken up very rapidly and with high efficiency into porcine hematopoietic cells, with no apparent deleterious effects. Therefore, silica-coated nanoparticles appear to be a promising tool for tracking porcine hematopoietic cells.
This study aims to review the differences in urban regeneration independently implemented by the government (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, MOLIT) and Seoul based on related laws and ordinances, and to draw out the implications of Korean urban regeneration’s directions. The results are as follows. First, Seoul has constantly responded to the revision of the Urban Regeneration Act by adjusting and specifying the contents of ordinances, and especially, there have been efforts to enhance regional characteristics suitably for the circumstances of Seoul. Second, in the urban regeneration of Seoul, the budgets including the matching ratio of national and local subsidies shall be changed according to the standards of the MOLIT in changing designating places after the selection of the urban regeneration by the ministry, and this procedure and these implementation methods cause confusion to Seoul and local governments. Third, there were differences in the results of comparing the budgets and support methods of the “Gaggum Housing Project” of Seoul and “New Deal Housing Repair Project” of the MOLIT, which caused conflicts due to the differences in the project implementation and support standards, and the arbitrary interpretation of the guidelines. Although the urban regeneration greatly contributed to the revelation and conservation of regional characteristics, it might be necessary to establish systems that can enhance citizens’ awareness and compensate the efficient contents needed for each region in the future.
Coronal Mass Ejections (CME), which originate from active regions of the Sun’s surface, e.g., sunspots, result in geomagnetic storms on Earth. The variation of the Earth’s geomagnetic field during such storms induces surface currents that could cause breakdowns in electricity power grids. Hence, it is essential to both monitor Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GICs) in real time and analyze previous GIC data. In 2012, in order to monitor the variation of GICs, the Korean Space Weather Center (KSWC) installed an induced current measurement system at SINGAPYEONG Substation, which is equipped with 765 kV extra-high-voltage transformers. Furthermore, in 2014, two induced current measurement systems were installed on the 345 kV high-voltage transformers at the MIGEUM and SINPOCHEON substations. This paper reports the installation process of the induced current measurement systems at these three substations. Furthermore, it presents the results of both an analysis performed using GIC data measured at the SINGAPYEONG Substation during periods of geomagnetic storms from July 2013 through April 2015 and the comparison between the obtained GIC data and magnetic field variation (dH/dt) data measured at the Icheon geomagnetic observatory.
