        The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of Chamaecyparis obtus extract to reduce odor emissions released from the swine feeding operations. Finisher pigs [Landrace × (Yorkshire × Duroc)] with an initial body weight averaging 50 kg were housed separately in two rooms with eighty eight pigs in each room at a swine feeding operation site. C. obtus extract was sprayed in the room by ceiling sprayer for one minute at twice per day during two months. Concentrations of odorous compounds from air in the room of the swine feeding operation were analyzed at four times during two months. Levels of butyric acid, valeric acid, i-butyric acid, ivaleric acid, skatole, methylmercaptan, and trimethylamine tended to decrease in C. obtus extract spray treatment group compared to the non-spray treatment group (P > 0.05). Odor activity values of butyric acid, valeric acid, skatole and trimethylamine were higher than other odorous compounds and decreased by 72%, 76%, 54% and 20%, respectively, in C. obtus extract spray treatment group compared to the non-spray group. Taken together, C. obtus extract showed an odor reducing capability in the air of a swine feeding operation suggesting that it possesses anti-bacterial properties as well as having a dust removal and masking effect.

        The purpose of this study was to explore olfactory sensitivity of odors from injection molding processing. To do this, the experiment was carried out in an injection molding factory, and participants were exposed to the environment where odor-substances (Formaldehyde, Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, Xylene, Styrene) exist. In addition, we used the subjective scale using semantic adjectives as an olfactory sensitivity. As a result, the assessment structure of olfactory sensitivity was composed of eight factors (irritant, thermal, tense, unique, like-dislike, active, stable, masculine), and the main factor which was irritant characteristics explained 20% of the total olfactory sensibility. These results suggested that odors from injection molding processing would cause more negative emotional responses than the flavor which is mainly used in olfactory sensitivity. This study, as a basic study of the improvement in a factory environment for the efficiency of work, has limits in that it was conducted to the extent of identifying the olfactory sensitivity structure of those who were at a laboratory and who were exposed to the environment of odor substance induced in the injection molding processing. Therefore, for the method of removing malodorous substance, the effect of materials which can neutralize it, and the comparison of a direct performance in the environment where negative sensitivity structure exists, a series of studies which aim to improve the environment of injection molding factories, such as performance assessment in the environment of a factory and an office need to be conducted. It is expected that when these studies are put together, the improvement guidelines will be provided as a type that can maximize the effectiveness of work in the factory environment where injection molding processing is done.

        각종 베리류 과실에 피해를 주는 벗초파리(Drosophila suzukii)에 있는 냄새감각기(Olfactory sensilla)들의 종류와 분포를 알아보기 위해 암, 수컷의 촉각(Antenna)과 작은턱수염(Maxillary Palpi)을 주사전자현미경(Scanning Electron Microscope)으로 관찰하였다. 직경 20–50nm의 작은 구멍(Pore)들이 표면에 존재하는 감각기(Sensilla)들을 냄새감각기 로 구분했을 때, 벗초파리의 촉각과 작은턱수염에 분포하는 많은 감각기들은 대부분이 냄새감각기로 판단되었다. 이들 냄새감각기들은 표면미세구조가 다른 귀모양감각기(Sensilla auricillica), 털감각기(Sensilla trichodea) 및 추상감각 기(Sensilla basiconica)가 대부분을 차지했으며, 감각기 종류와 분포양상은 촉각과 작은턱수염 사이에 뚜렷한 차이를 나타내어 벗초파리의 촉각과 작은턱수염은 서로 다른 냄새감각기능을 가질 것으로 생각되었다. 본 연구 결과는 벗초파리의 냄새통신을 이해하고 유인제를 개발하는데 유용한 정보를 제공할 것으로 사료된다.

        Odor in pig manure affects the distribution of the manure over grass and crop fields as fertilizer. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of different types of microbes (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Bacillus subtilis and Rodobacter capsulata) and incubation temperatures (20℃ and 35℃) on the levels of odorous compounds in pig manure. Pig manure was incubated with 0.03% microbes (v/v) at temperatures of 20℃ or 35℃. At incubation temperature of 20℃, the addition of Rodobacter capsulata significantly (p<0.05) decreased the levels of indoles and volatile fatty acid (VFA). At incubation temperature of 35℃, the addition of any microbes of the three used in this study did not significantly (p>0.05) affect the levels of odorous compounds. When incubation temperature was increased from 20℃ to 35℃, levels of odorous compounds were significantly (p<0.05) increased. Taken together, these results suggest that Rodobacter capsulata could be utilized to reduce odor from pig manure in the spring and fall when the average temperature is around 20℃. However, alternative odor-reducing technology is needed to be developed to apply onto pig manure during the hot summer season (35℃).

        This study aims to construct the basic data of ground-scratching behaviors of Korean native dog, Jindo-Gae (Canis lupus familiaris) and to estimate the frequency of ground-scratching, especially natural and artificial environments. Ground-scratching rate of female and male dogs are 1 : 40.25. Ground-scratching after feacal-marking rate by male is 17.9 times higher than female. Ground-scratching behavior of jindo-Gae thought to a multiple sign combining visual and chemical elements. Native dogs thought to a missing link in dog domestication, thus behavioral comparisons between wolves and Korean native dogs are needed.

        This study aims to construct the basic data of faecal-marking behaviors of Korean native dog breed, Jindo-Gae (Canis lupus familiaris) under the influence of spay and neuter and to estimate the frequency of faecal-marking, especially natural and artificial environments. Faecal-marking rate of female and male dogs are 3.43 : 1. Faecal-marking after urination by male is 13 times higher than female. Ground-scratching after feacal-marking by male is 24 times higher than female. Faecal-marking by jindo-Gae thought to a multiple sign combining visual and chemical elements and their faecal-marking postures are similar. Native dogs shows that a missing link in dog domestication, thus behavioral comparisons between wolves and Korean native dogs are needed.

Most urination by male were RLU(87.3%)and by female were SQ(66.3%). Urine-marking by jindo-Gae thought to a multiple sign combining visual and chemical elements, also seem to sex dimorphism behavior. Native dogs shows that a missing link in dog domestication,thus behavioral comparisons between wolves and Korean native dogs are needed.

        영상실감을 위한 시각과 청각의 이용은 많은 발전을 이루어 왔다. 그러나 후각을 이용한 영상의 실감증대는 기술적 한계와 기초연구의 부족으로 구현되지 못하고 있다. 특히 다양한 영상에 필요한 냄새를 각각 구현하는 것은 반드시 해결해야하는 과제이다. 한 가지 방법은 유사한 냄새들의 군집을 발견하여 각 군집의 대표냄새를 사용하는 것이다. 이를 해결하기 위한 한 가지 방법은 서로 유사한 다양한 냄새를 포괄하는 냄새군집을 발견하 여 각 군집의 대표냄새를 사용하는 것이다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 냄새 간 쌍유사성 평정에 근거하여 영상에 빈번하게 등장하는 냄새의 군집을 탐색하였다. 먼저 300개의 다양한 냄새를 수집하여 11개의 범주로 구분한 후 각 범주별로 빈도, 선호도, 구체성에 근거하여 152개의 냄새를 선별하였다. 참가자들은 선별된 냄새로 구성 가능 한 1,018개의 냄새쌍에 대해 유사성 평정을 실시하였고 이 결과는 다차원척도법(multi-dimensional scaling, MDS) 으로 분석하였다. 냄새들의 구체성이 낮을수록 대표냄새의 사용이 용이할 것이라는 판단 하에 MDS 결과를 냄새 구체성이 낮은 순서부터 높은 범주순서로 제시하였다. 즉 꽃, 식물, 과일, 채소범주는 냄새 구체성이 낮아 대표냄 새 사용이 용이할 것 같은 범주로 (그림 1), 화학제품, 개인생활용품, 생리적 냄새, 일상적 장소는 구체성이 높은 것과 낮은 것이 섞여 있어 대표냄새 사용에 신중해야하는 범주로 (그림 2), 식재료, 음료, 음식은 구체성이 높아 대표냄새 사용에 어려운 범주로 (그림 3) 분류하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 냄새제작 비용과 시간을 줄이고 소비자 에게 합리적인 가격의 실감서비스를 제공하는데 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

        환경대기 중의 휘발성유기화합물을 채취할 때 사용하는 샘플링 방법은 백을 이용한 샘 플링 방법과 흡착관을 이용한 샘플링이 대표적이다. 본 연구에서는 실제 대기시료를 이 용하여 두 샘플링 방법을 동시에 진행하여 비교하고자 하였다. 시료의 채취방법에 따른 회수율 정도를 알아보기 위해, 청국장을 조리하면서 발생하는 시료를 채취하는 과정에서 실험을 진행하였다. 그 결과, 유기산의 회수율이 백 샘플링보다 흡착관을 이용한 샘플링 에서 평균적으로 98.6 %의 percent difference (PD)를 나타내는 것을 확인하였다. 카보닐 계열과 방향족은 19.2와 34.3 %로 비교적 적은 차이를 나타냈다. 각 성분 중에서 butyl acetate는 0.50 %로 가장 낮은 수치를 보였고, TMA도 마찬가지로 비교적 낮은 수치를 기록하였다(2.13 %). 이러한 결과는 현장 조건에서 채취방식의 중요성을 확인해 주었다

        남자고등학교 교실에서 발생하는 냄새(발냄새, 머리냄새, 쉰냄새, 땀냄새)와 대표악취물질(부티르산, 암모니아)에 대한 뇌파반응을 분석하였다. 냄새자극 시험은 30~50대의 여성을 대상으로 수행하였다. 교실냄새와 대표악취물질의 자극에 대한 뇌파 지표들의 변화 경향은 측두엽에서 가장 두드러지게 나타났다. 이들 악취물질의 측두엽에서 반응은 바탕뇌파대비 상대알파파를 0.04~0.13 감소시켰고, 상대베타파 0.02~0.06, 상대감마파를 0.03~0.09 증가시켰다. 교실냄새들과 두 악취물질들은 이완상태를 나타내는 알파파를 감소시켰고, 각성과 긴장 및 스트레스를 나타내는 고베타파(18~30Hz)와 불안과 흥분상태를 나타내는 감마파(30~50Hz)를 활성화시켰다. 냄새물질들의 뇌 각성 및 자극정도는 머리냄새 > 부트르산 > 발냄새, 쉰냄새 > 암모니아> 땀냄새 순이었다. 이러한 결과는 교실냄새가 과도한 각성이나 긴장을 유발하므로 수업 집중력이나 학습능력을 저해할 수 있음을 의미한다.

        One of the overlooked points in mosquito blood feeding research is a final step before blood feeding such as finding a best position of blood feeding site and blood vessels underneath. How mosquitoes detect blood vessels especially using chemosensory organs prior to a final stage of blood feeding is totally unknown. Here we provide the anatomical and chemosensory evidence that a piecing structure of the mouthpart of the mosquitoes is an essential apparatus for the penultimate stage in blood feeding in mosquitoes. Indeed, mosquito mouthparts possesses a set of olfactory receptor neurons in sensory hairs, which are sensitive to volatile compounds present in host blood. Furthermore, the inhibition of gene expression of these odorant receptors delayed blood feeding of the mosquito from host animals. Taken together, these results identify that chemosensory perception in mouthpart is involved in mosquito blood feeding behaviors, which in turn allows mosquito to locate a feeding site more precisely.

        This study was aimed to elucidate the cause of odor in a park, which was used for the landfill site about 20 years ago. For this purpose, VOCs concentration was measured using passive sampler at 10 sampling sites around a park for two times (spring and summer). The VOCs concentration measured in summer showed very low concentration and the relative VOCs ratio also showed no special patterns relating with other studies, which was caused to heavy rainfall during the sampling period. However, the relative ratio of toluene concentration of two sampling sites in spring appeared very high relating with other studies. It was thought that the high VOCs concentration in this park was caused not by landfill but by a neighboring painting materials company.

        This paper presented experimental results for circulation type UV-TiO2 photocatalytic oxidation process. We have developed UV-TiO2 photocatalytic oxidation process with activated carbon to control odor and VOCs in indoor and industrial applications. In this study, common indoor air pollutants, namely ammonia, formaldehyde, hydrogen disulfide, toluene were selected to investigate their efficiencies for UV-TiO2 photocatalytic oxidation. In high concentration test, the decomposition efficiency was high in order as ammonia, toluene, formaldehyde, hydrogen disulfide. Three type of individual processes are tested for ability to increase decomposition efficiency. UV-TiO2 photocatalytic oxidation combined process with activated carbon was excellent among the three type processes without reference to gas species. It was considered that this circulation type process will overcome short retention time for treatment for UV-TiO2 photocatalytic oxidation. It will promise that this circulation type UV-TiO2 photocatalytic oxidation combined process can apply indoor and industrial applications to remove odor and VOCs quickly.

        In this study, A method for confirming the putrefaction point of apples by using odor variation as applied in apple storage. The samples were obtained from apple storage at Chuncheon shi Dongnae-myeon using by lung sampler. The complex odor was separated by GC/O and individual odors were then analyzed. In the apple storage, the varieties and number of apples vary based on cultivarsand sales volume of apples. Thus, using an emission chamber in the apple storage is difficult. The odor value of the emission chamber and apple storage is denoted by standardizing the sizes and number of apples. The variations in the ratios of aroma value and off-odor value were investigated. The ratio of the aroma value and off-odor value in the emission chamber increased. However, the apple storage values were applied on the number of apples, thus the values alternately increased and decreased in most cases. If the internal change of apple started, it is ratio of aroma value and off-odor value is cloese to zero. and If the External putrefaction on the apple surface is confirmed, the log value becomes larger than 0.5. Complete putrefaction in the stored apples, the log value close to 1.5. We therefore confirmed that this noninvasive method using odor variation can apply to monitoring the quality of apples in storage.
