        Environmental stress is a growing problem for the productivity of forage crops. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation due to several abiotic stresses is a fundamental process that interrupts several physiological processes and causes a significant reduction on growth and yield of many forage crops. Molecular breeding such as genetic transformation has become a popular biotechnological tool for improving forage quality as well as improves tolerance to various abiotic stresses. As a first step of genetic transformation in tall fescue, we established an efficient Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation protocol using mature seed-derived embryogenic callus. After optimization of the transformation system, several genes of interest have been used to generate abiotic stress tolerant forage grasses. We generated transgenic tall fescue plants expressing NDPK genes under the control of the oxidative stress-inducible SWPA2 promoter. Transgenic plants showed enhanced tolerance to several abiotic stresses. Results in the current study, suggest that NDPK mediated multiple stress tolerance by increasing the expression of genes involved in antioxidant and protective functions, possibly through activation of an MAPK cascade.

        Designers have to consider voice of customer, process capability, manufacturing standards & condition, manufacturing method and characteristics of products to decide tolerances. Especially, in case of position of hole and pin, designers have to consider process capability to decide tolerances. The traditional position tolerances used in a drawing are theoretical values which are allocated to position under the worst case assembling condition that both hole and pin are the maximum material condition(MMC). However, when the process capability is high, more exact product size can be produced under stable manufacturing condition. Larger clearance of hole and pin can be allocated. In this point of view, manufacturer could increase the yield by allocating larger position tolerance than theoretical position tolerance of hole and pin considering process capability.

        Takju lees extract is expected to be a promising material for functional food. This study was conducted in order to assess the glycemic index (GI) of Takju lees extract and its effects in an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). The GI for Takju lees extract was evaluated with 10 healthy young adults (Male 5, Female 5). OGTT was conducted in 20 male db/db mice, fed on a diet containing 2% Takju lees extract for 4 weeks. Those animals were subjected to OGTT after one oral administration of Takju lees extract at 2 g/kg BW. The GI of the Takju lees extract was measured at 97.97. The effects of the Takju lees extract on the oral glucose tolerance test in db/db mice evidenced no differences as compared to the control group. In conclusion, Takju lees extract is a high GI material, and it has no effect on blood glucose levels in a type II diabetic animal model. Further studies will be required to confirm its anti-diabetic effects.

        Environmental tolerance of three important spider mite predators; Neoseiulus womersleyi, Neoseiulus californicus and Phytoseiulus persimilis (Phytoseiidae) was experimented by treating combination of temperature and relative humidity for egg hatching and immature survival. Egg hatching rate increased at the relative humidity incrased for three species. Temperature effects were only significant to N. californicus and P. persimilis. The lethal humidities for three species were in the range of 56-77, 82.0, 66-94% RH, respectively. Larva does not need to feed for larval development into protonymph in three tested species. No larvae survived at lower than 75% RH for N. womersleyi, but around 80% at 95% RH. N. californicus larvae survived around 50% and 100% at 75 and 95% RH. P. persimilis larve survival was decreased as the temperature increased at 75% RH, but platued around 100% at 95% RH. Cannibalism was higher in N. californicus and lower in P. persimilis. Implementation of the results was discussed relative to biological control of spider mites in open field and greenhouse crops.

        밀양 23호/기호벼 유래 164 RILs(F17)을 이용하여, 종자의 휴면과 관련이 있는 수발아 저항성, 건열 저항성 및 종자수명을 검정하고, 이들 상호간 상관관계를 조사하였다. 출수 40일째에 밀양23호와 기호벼의 수발아율은 0%, 7%이었고, M/G RILs은 0~50.9%의 범위를 보였으며, 평균 3.2%였다. 90℃, 24시간 건열처리후 밀양23호와 기호벼는 99.2%, 37.6%의 발아율을 보였고, T50은 2.7일, 12.9일로 유의한 차이를 보였으며, M/G RILs의 평균 발아율은 72.4%였다. 상온저장 한 종자수명은 밀양23호는 수확후 3.5년까지도 80% 이상의 종자 발아율을 유지하였으나, 기호벼는 18개월 후부터 급격히 발아력이 감소하여(30%이하), 42개월 후 발아력을 완전히 상실하였다. M/G RILs의 종자활력은 수확후 42개월까지 71계통이 90%이상의 발아율을 보였다. 수발아 저항성, 건열 저항성 및 종자수명은 밀양 23호와 기호벼 간에 뚜렷한 품종간 차이를 보였으며, M/G RILs은 양친의 중간값에 가까운 평균값을 보였다. 건열저항성과 종자수명 간에는 고도로 유의한 정의 상관관계를 보였고, 수발아와 종자수명, 수발아와 건열저항성 간에는 부의 상관관계가 성립하였다.
