PURPOSES: Spalling is one of the primary problems that lead to the damage of concrete pavements. The purpose of the study is to analyze the impact range of spalling that occurred in an area of concrete pavement by applying a variety of nondestructive and destructive testing methods. METHODS: Spalling of the concrete pavement was categorized into four different sizes, 0 cm, 7.5 cm, 15 cm, and 30 cm. Nondestructive and destructive tests were performed at the point of spalling and 1 m away, respectively, and the obtained results were compared. The nondestructive tests included the electrical resistance test and the ultrasonic velocity test as well as strength tests by Schmidt hammer and concrete tester. The destructive tests included the direct compressive strength test and the chloride content test using field cored specimens. The test results helped in the analysis of the correlation between the current spalling damage condition and the expected damage acceleration. RESULTS: Based on the present study, the repair area and depth of spalling for a partial depth repair was suggested. It was also shown that the size of the spalling is highly correlated with the chloride content and the electrical resistance of the concrete pavement. CONCLUSIONS: The degree of spalling deterioration was found to be highly correlated with the chloride content and electrical resistance of the concrete pavement and based on the results, the extent of repair could be determined more quantitatively.

PURPOSES: This study determines the life of asphalt overlay over old concrete pavements for various times of overlay, using the actual 30- year performance history of the Jungbu Expressway. The results from this study can be used as the basis for decisions on the proper time for overlay, and can also provide information for life cycle cost analysis. METHODS : The maintenance history of the Jungbu Expressway and traffic database 30 years after construction were analyzed. The durations between the first overlay and subsequent overlay for each section of the pavement were analyzed for the entire Jungbu Expressway. The durations were analyzed in terms of both years and the ESAL traffic volumes. RESULTS : 1. The life of the asphalt overlay over the old concrete pavements depended on the time of overlay in terms of both age and cumulative ESALs. A strong correlation was observed between the overlay life and the cumulative ESALs at the time of overlay. 2. The life of the second overlay at the same section was significantly shorter than the first overlay. For JCP, the average lives of the first and second overlays were 6.1 and 2.4 years, respectively. For CRCP, they were 4.8 and 2.7 years, respectively. The main reason for the shorter life of the overlay for CRCP may be that the overlay time was generally later than that for the JCP. 3. The life of the overlay was analyzed according to its materials. SMA exhibited the best performance, followed by CRM. CONCLUSIONS: Life of the overlay reduced with the time of overlay especially in terms of cumulative ESALs, and the life of the second overlay at the same section was significantly shorter than the first overlay. The results can be used in the decision making of the time of overlay and in the life cycle cost analysis.

PURPOSES : In this study, we evaluated the quality levels of abrasion resistance and freeze-thaw resistance to the surface layer (colored layer) by using an overseas abrasion resistance test method to confirm the quality suitability of the concrete block surface for a domestic production permeable block. METHODS : In this study, a new evaluation item for increased durability apart from the quality standard of the permeable block was considered, namely, evaluation of the durability of the surface layer and the freeze-thaw resistance of the permeable block itself by EN 1338, ASTM C 779, 994, and GR 4009 (KS F 4419). RESULTS : The abrasion resistance test for the permeable block revealed that there were relative differences according to the different test methods. However, it was observed that if the ASTM C 779 test results did not meet the wear resistance quality standards, it did not satisfy ASTM C 944 and EN 1338. The ASTM C 779 test result was analyzed to have the highest objectivity and discernment, and this test method was proposed as a permeable block wear test method. In addition, the freeze-thaw resistance test method by the GR 4007 standard can be measured by strength, so it is possible to evaluate the resistance of the permeable block through this test method. CONCLUSIONS : The abrasion resistance test and freeze-thaw resistance test can contribute to the improvement of the permeable block when added to the current quality evaluation tests.

PURPOSES : This study was conducted to analyze the problems of the permeable block by objectively evaluating the quality of the permeable block and providing basic data to improve the quality and construction defect of the permeable block pavement in accordance with the continuously increasing demand of the permeable block. METHODS : In this study, we evaluated the current quality standard suitability of nine products to evaluate the current quality level of domestic production permeable blocks. The evaluation items were evaluated for surface layer thickness, block dimension, strength, and permeability coefficient, and the Korea Standard suitability for these evaluation items was analyzed. In addition, a three-dimensional finite element analysis was conducted to determine the effect of vehicle load on the deformation of block pavement structure. RESULTS : The results demonstrated that the surface layer (colored layer) thicknesses of domestically produced permeable block products were different according to the quality standards, and the dimensions were evaluated to be excellent for domestic permeable blocks currently being produced and delivered. In addition, the strength and permeability coefficient evaluation result demonstrated that all products meet the strength and permeability coefficient quality standards, but the correlation between these strengths and permeability coefficients is not high. The quality standard of strength and permeability coefficients is evaluated as being sufficiently achieved by domestic production technology. CONCLUSIONS: The intensity and permeability coefficients measured in this study were in line with the quality standards; however, the variable coefficient was found to have a significant difference in the quality control level from a maximum of 26% to a minimum 1.7%.

PURPOSES: This paper presents the noise reduction effect of asphalt concrete pavement using steel slag aggregate. METHODS: Steel slag aggregates induce various mechanical effects because of their high stiffness and specific gravity. It is also known that the noise reduction effect is due to its high specific gravity and porous nature. In this study, the noise reduction in a steel slag asphalt concrete pavement section was measured and analyzed. RESULTS : On average, an asphalt concrete pavement with steel slag reduces road traffic noise by about 2 dB(A). In addition, the analysis of sound pressure levels by frequency showed lower sound pressure levels in steel slag asphalt concrete pavement than general HMA in all frequency ranges (from low to high frequencies). An analysis of the benefits with regard to noise, by assuming a road-traffic noise reduction of 2 dB(A) with asphalt concrete pavement using steel slag, shows that the noise abatement cost approach can save 1.6 million won a year over soundproof wall costs. In addition, the noise damage cost approach results in cost savings (with regard to noise) of between 19 and 60 million won per year depending on the population density. CONCLUSIONS: The use of steel slag aggregate as an asphalt concrete mixture material not only improves the mechanical performance but also has a noise reduction effect. It is expected that the steel slag asphalt concrete pavement can reduce the environmental burden by utilizing resources and provide a safer and more comfortable pavement condition to the road users.

PURPOSES: This study was conducted to investigate the causes of damage and to suggest proper repair methods for the sections in which a number of transverse cracks and faulting occurred in JCP (Jointed Concrete Pavement) slabs during the early-age performance period. METHODS: Field crack survey, FWD (Falling Weight Deflectometer) investigation, dowel bar installation condition survey, longitudinal profile survey, and in-situ core specimen inspection were conducted. . RESULTS : As a result of the analysis, it was found that there was no decline in the composite modulus of the subgrade reaction (k-value). The dowel bars were properly installed, but the LTE (Load Transfer Efficiency) of the joint and transverse cracks were analyzed to be very low. In addition, it was found that there are voids in the bottom of the slab at the joints and corners. Due to the excessive built-in curling in the early age of concrete pavement construction, upward curling displacement occurred at the joints and corners, resulting in voids at the bottom of the slab. As a result, it was found that transverse cracks occurred due to the defective joint LTE. CONCLUSIONS: Excessive built-in curling can cause early age cracks in the JCP slabs. In order to minimize the occurrence of reflection cracks after the application of the asphalt overlay in the future, concepts of alternative repair methods were proposed.

PURPOSES : In Korea, asphalt overlay has been used as a typical alternative rehabilitation method for deteriorated pavements. However, asphalt overlay has problems due to poor bonding of the asphalt overlay and the old concrete. Recently, concrete overlays, which have advantages such as long-term durability and high structural capacity to carry heavy traffic, have been considered for rehabilitation construction. However, concrete overlays have limitations such as difficulty in opening to traffic and pavement noise. Recently, an appropriate fine-size exposed aggregate concrete pavement technique was reported to solve these problems. Therefore, this study aims to suggest an optimum mixture design of fine-size exposed aggregate concrete overlay (EACO) that can ensure low noise and early strength. METHODS : The optimum mixture design of fine-size EACO is determined to ensure adequate structural performance for early traffic opening and good functional performances such as low noise. Therefore, the optimum mixture proportion is determined based on the optimum design of aggregate content to produce a low-noise pavement texture by controlling the exposed aggregate number (EAN) and mean texture depth (MTD). RESULTS : The water-cement ratio and unit cement ratio were used to determine the mixture designs to achieve workability and adequate strength for early traffic opening. The texture was determined by selecting the maximum size of coarse aggregate smaller than 10 mm with an S/a ratio of less than 30% for low noise. With these mixture proportions, the EAN and MTD were 50±5 / 25cm2 and 1.0±0.2 mm. Respectively, which meet the criteria for EACO. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, an optimum mixture design of EACO for early traffic opening and low noise is suggested by using earlyhigh strength cement, and the pavement texture is implemented considering EAN and MTD. In addition, a pavement surface texture criterion is suggested for the quality control of EACO.
