Economic traits are quantitative traits and are mostly controlled by a large number of genes. Some these genes tend to have a large effect on quantitative traits in cattle and are known as major genes primarily located at quantitative traits loci (QTL). However, in practice, QTL is linked to allele associates of the gene controlling traits of interest. It is hypothesized that if QTL explaining a part of genetic differences between animals are detected, the effect of the genes located at QTL could assist in estimating an animal’s true genetic value. Therefore, QTL information could probably provides accuracy of breeding value estimation as well as more genetic gain through selection of animals at relatively younger age. Marker assisted selection (MAS) is the indirect selection process where a quantitative trait of economic importance is selected not just based on the trait itself but also on the basis of marker linked to QTL. MAS could be useful for traits that are difficult to measure, exhibit low heritability, and are expressed late in development. Major genes which are responsible for QTL could possibly be identified first by using different techniques such as gene expression analysis and QTL mapping. Thereafter, the information generated could be implemented for MAS in estimating breeding value. In this review we focused on delivering genome information into Hanwoo breeding program.

In Africa, rice is the fastest demanding staple food with a high growth rate of consumption at 4.5% per annum. Currently Africa occupies 32% of world rice imports, and pressure on rice is expected to rise in the near future. Faced with this deficit, Korea has launched the rice breeding project through Korea-Africa Food & Agriculture Cooperation Initiative (KAFACI) of which goal is to increase rice productivity through accelerated development of improved germplasm and varieties in Africa. As of 2013, the ten African member countries joined the rice breeding projects of KAFACI program; they are Cameroon, DR Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Nigeria, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. We adopted the breeding strategy of intervarietal cross and anther culture to speed up high-yielding secondary populations using the Korean and African germplasm. Korean germplasm is composed of 1) temperate japonicas adaptable to tropical conditions of short-day length and high temperature 2) wide-cross derivatives from African wild species, O.glaberrima and O,longistaminata, and 3) tongil-type varieties. These germplasm is evaluated for adaptability in Africa and African partners make crosses with local germplasm with the best selections. Korea produce double-haploid populations from these crosses for another cycle of selection for high-yielding lines in Africa. Inter-varietal crosses and double-haploid technology could accelerate the development of high-yielding germplasm and new rice varieties in Africa within short project period.

Seed storage proteins of different solubility were extracted and denatured subunits of each protein were evaluated with malting barley quality parameters. Its been known that each subunit of seed storage protein encoded by each gene and subunit profiles were highly related to end-use quality in cereals. The purpose of this study is to provide selection criteria for high quality malting barleys with aid of bichemical-genetic information. Total 13 regional test lines and three locations (Naju, Jinju, and Jeju) were incorporated in this study. Albumin and hordein were extracted, denatured, and separated in 12% SDS-PAGE. Presence and absence of subunits of each protein were scored. Dendrogram (using XLSTAT program) was constructed to evaluated the relatedness of lines. The correlation between band profiles and quality test were assessed through Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering (AHC) for statistics analysis. Hordein subunits can be classified into four groups, A, B, C, and D group. In general, hordein fractions contribute higher than albumine to determine malting quality. Specific molecular weight ranges (97.4-31.0, 66.2-31.0, and 45.0-31.0 kDa) of subunits were highly correlated with malting barley quality parameters. The subunit information would be directly incorporated in providing selection criteria for high quality malting barley in the malting barley breeding program.
