The pioneering effort of Korea's distant water fisheries can be traced back to 1957 when Jinam-ho, affiliated with Jedong Industry Co., embarked on a tuna longline sea trial in the Indian Ocean. The success of this sea trial holds significant importance as it laid the groundwork for Korea to venture into the Pacific tuna fishing grounds, which were predominantly dominated by the United States and Japan at that time. The Korean distant water fisheries experienced remarkable growth in a short period, from the inception period in the 1950s, the pioneering period in the 1960s, the growth period in the 1970s, and the development period in the 1980s. However, a series of changes in the international situation, including the global oil crises of 1973 and 1978, the declaration of 200-nautical-mile zones by coastal states in 1977, and the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in 1982 and the United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement (UNFSA) in 1995, made a significant transformation in the Korean distant water fisheries inevitable. In particular, UNFSA grants the authority to conserve and manage fisheries resources to the Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs), and stipulates that coastal states and fishing nations cooperate with each other through RFMOs. In order to reclaim the once vast fishing grounds and secure maritime territories, it is imperative to have both the keen attention of the fishing industries and the strategic support of the government. In addition, to secure competitiveness in the international community, we should faithfully fulfill the role as a responsible fishing nation and contribute to RFMOs by strengthening scientific activities.
This study aimed to identify the selectivity of catches according to mesh size of gillnets, and to collect basic data for fisheries resource management plans for gillnets. The mesh selectivity test was conducted with five different mesh sizes (60, 66, 69, 75, and 96 mm) gillnet in coastal sea of Mukho port and the selectivity was analyzed using the Kitahara method. In results of the selectivity test, a total of 143 (36,249 g) of atka mackerel were caught and the 60 mm gillnet was the highest at 83 (18,596 g), which is about 58.0% of the total catch. The relative growth equation between body length and weight showed that weight tends to increase proportional to body length. The maximum length/mesh size value was showed 0.490 by the master curve of selectivity, and the 50% selection range was showed 0.138. Therefore, it was found that the size of the caught fish increased proportional to the mesh size. The results of this study were intended to be used as data for establishing a plan for efficient management of atka mackerel resources.
This study aimed to investigate the catch selectivity characteristics related to the mesh arrangement of the codend in bottom trawl. Sea trials were conducted using the covered codend method from January 16 to 17, 2024, off the southern coast of Gyeongsangnam-do, focusing on the side panels of diamond and square mesh codend. A probit model was used in the selectivity analysis to estimate retention probability curves for sea pike comparing the , , and selectivity lengths, the selection range ( ), and the corresponding and values. The estimated 50% selection lengths were 23.82 cm for the diamond mesh and 25.20 cm for the square mesh whereas the corresponding selection ranges were 5.23 cm for the diamond mesh and 3.71 cm for the square mesh. The and values for the square mesh were lower, at 35.91 and 36.71, respectively, compared to 37.65 and 38.45 for the diamond mesh. Additionally, the retention probability at a fork length of 15 cm was lower for the square mesh than for the diamond mesh. These findings provide practical insights for gear design while contributing to the reduction of bycatch and small size fish catches in bottom trawl.
The concept of catch-all controls is not new, having been developed in the US and EU over 30 years ago and legislated about 20 years ago. It is a system that controls what is not in an item based on the end-user and end-use rather than the strategic items defined by the existing multilateral export control regimes. Most importantly, the controls are based on end-user or end-use. Catch-all controls are the best tool to solve the problems of traditional list based controls. Technological advances, emerging technologies, and globalization have made standard export controls insufficient. Catch-all controls are optimized to control non-compliant, under-specified, partial, and intangible technology transfers. Catch-all controls have been adopted and implemented in the four multilateral export control regimes (MECR) and are also reflected in legislation in the United States and the European Union. The NSG has a catch-all provision in INFCIRC/254/Part2 Paragraph 5, the AG has a catch-all condition in the Guidelines, and the MTCR has a catch-all provision in the Guidelines Paragraph 7. Korea has also implemented catch-all controls reflected in the Foreign Trade Act of 2004. However, there are still many challenges of catch-all controls. First, the problem with catch-all controls is that there are different cases in different countries for list controls, and there are too many cases in other countries to control what is not on the list. Second, there is very little international legal enforcement for failing or missing catch-all controls. Finally, information about these catch-all cases is not uniformly available. For catch-all control, Korea currently consolidates the list of traders of concern including UN sanction list and denial list of MECR, provides a correlation table of significant items and countries requiring catch-all control for stakeholders, and organizes and operates a coordination committee for traders of concerns. In the future, Korea should strengthen the monitoring of other countries’ catch-all control cases and participate in international cooperation meetings to disseminate Korea’s best practices.
Giant pacific octopus, Enteroctopus dofleini, is a large mollusk distributed in the East Sea of Korea. In this study, the catch status of giant pacific octopus by drift line fishery and the effect of sea temperature on fishing ground were investigated in Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do, which is the central coast of the East Sea. The average catch of giant pacific octopus in Gangwon-do was 1,570 tons over the past ten years, and it accounted for 21% in 2008 and 44% in 2021 compared to the total catch in the East Sea during the same period. Such data indicates that the catch in Gangwon-do has recently increased. In this study area, giant pacific octopus weighing 1.1-5.0 kg dominated accounting for 56% of the total individuals, and followed by those weighing 1 kg or less. However, the ratio of catch of giant pacific octopus over 5.1 kg tended to increase in 2021, which is thought to be related to the sea temperature that affected the fishing ground. The main depth of fishing ground was from 21 m to 50 m in this area and fishing grounds were widely distributed throughout the season except summer. Fishing ground was formed with the conditions of bottom sea temperature under 10℃ and was diminished by moving of giant pacific octopus to deeper depth with conditions of bottom sea temperature over 18℃.
The purpose of this study is to provide information about annual variations in catch size and changes in reproductive biology in the common octopus, Octopus vulgaris, a commercially important species in Jeju Island. Samples were collected from coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea by coastal trap fishery from January to November 2021. Octopus vulgaris have been decreasing in this region since 1984. The mantle length (ML) ranged from 4.5 to 17.8 cm and body weight (BW) ranged form 88.5 to 2,657.5 g. A χ 2 -test revealed that the number of males was significantly greater than females (χ 2 = 32.712, df = 10, P<0.05). Mature females were found from January to July and male occurred January to August. The gonadosomatic index value was higher from July to August than other months. The relationship between mantle length and body weight was BW = 2.4527ML 2.3139 (female) and BW = 2.6785ML 2.3159 (male). At 50% group maturity, female and male average weight was estimated to be 554.7 g and 330.6 g, respectively.
Since South Korea did not adopt the recreation fishing using right (coupon) system, there were no recreation fishing statistics. This study selected 480 fishing vessels (10.4%) of a total of 4,611 fishing vessels (as of December 2019) as a survey sample using stratified sampling. Unlike other research institutes that conducted surveys related to the amount of tide on a one-time, this survey was conducted for five months (from May to October 2020, except the month of August). The captain investigated about types of fish, size, weight, etc. to anglers. A difference from previous studies was that about 7.0 million angler population (fishing more than three times a week) had 19.4 kg of catch per person for a year while other studies showed about 25.5-52.0 kg, respectively. The total fisheries resource catch amount was analyzed to be about 95,000 tons in this study and 116,000-166,000 tons in other studies. So there was a difference of about 1.2 to 1.8 times. This study aims to lay the foundation for the development of the fishing industry by preparing accurate statistical data and securing reliable basic statistics related to the fishing industry. Also, it could be usefully used as basic policy data such as introduction of a fishing using right (coupon) system.
A catch basin sump is one major habitat for mosquito larvae, especially in urban areas. This study developed a device for mosquito control, specifically for the catch basin sump. It consists of a housing, is a little smaller than the catch basin sump, numerous floating materials, which the key component for mosquito control, and mesh nets. The small balls or pyramid-shaped floating materials inhibit mosquito enclosures and spawning by significantly decreasing the surface area of the water, which is essential for the mosquito life cycle. These floating materials were designed to keep the water flowing. The mesh nets were installed to prevent the outflow of floating materials. The efficiency of the floating materials was tested with 3 conditions (1, 2, 3 layers of floating materials) and a control group. The emergence of mosquito adults decreased by 20% in one-layer, and 70-80% in second and third layers. Therefore, this device is expected to certainly contribute to mosquito population control in the catch basin sump.
