This study aimed to identify the selectivity of catches according to mesh size of gillnets, and to collect basic data for fisheries resource management plans for gillnets. The mesh selectivity test was conducted with five different mesh sizes (60, 66, 69, 75, and 96 mm) gillnet in coastal sea of Mukho port and the selectivity was analyzed using the Kitahara method. In results of the selectivity test, a total of 143 (36,249 g) of atka mackerel were caught and the 60 mm gillnet was the highest at 83 (18,596 g), which is about 58.0% of the total catch. The relative growth equation between body length and weight showed that weight tends to increase proportional to body length. The maximum length/mesh size value was showed 0.490 by the master curve of selectivity, and the 50% selection range was showed 0.138. Therefore, it was found that the size of the caught fish increased proportional to the mesh size. The results of this study were intended to be used as data for establishing a plan for efficient management of atka mackerel resources.

Maturity and spawning of the Octopus longispadiceus was investigated based on the samples collected in the East Sea. We analyzed monthly changes in maturity stage, gonadosomatic index (GSI), eggs diameter, fecundity and body weight at group maturity. Mature stages appeared every month, and GSI values were high every month. Spawning season was estimated to be year-round, and main spawning occurs intensively in sping and fall. The eggs diameter of mature stage was 19.2 ± 3.0 mm. The total number of eggs in the fecundity ranged from 31 eggs in 189 g (BW) to 184 eggs in 1,013 g (BW), which was proportional to body weight (BW), and the relationship between total weight and fecundity was F = 0.7593 × BW0.7719 (R2 = 0.7462). The percentages of sexually mature females estimated using a logistic equation were over 50% at 323.4 g BW, 75% at 451.4 g BW and 97.5% at 750.3 g BW, respectively. We think that it be good way for Octopus longispadiceus to be regulated by fishing gear and fishing method.

The purpose of this study was to provide basic data for evaluating the reproductive health of bivalves using intersexuality. We analyzed purplish bifurcate mussel Mytilisepta virgata (n = 67, shell height 37.1±8.3 mm), Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum (n = 288, shell length 28.6±4.2 mm) collected from coastal water near Yeosu, Korea. The sex ratio (female:male) of M. virgata and R. philippinarum were 1:1.5 and 1:0.8, respectively, and showed differences depending on the collection area. The total intersexuality of M. virgata was 20.9%. The intersexuality in female (33.3%) was higher than in male (12.5%), and the regional intersexuality was 72.7% in Sogyeongdo, 20.0% in Oesamdo and 5.6% in Jungsamdo with the highest in Sogyeongdo. The total intersexuality of R. philippinarum was 11.8%. The intersexuality in female (17.5%) was higher than in male (4.7%), and regional intersexuality was 20.0% in Neungchodo, 13.0% in Dokdo, 2.8% in Samdo, 5.9% in Orando, 19.6% in Oesamdo with the highest in Neungchodo. The incidence of intersexuality according to distance from cities and ports each sampling area showed no clear tendency. Intersex specimens were showed histological structure changes of digestive gland, such as digestive tubule disruption and necrosis of epithelial cells, accumulation of eosinophilic granules in lumen of tubule, necrosis of connective tissue. These results suggest that not only the histological structure of the digestive gland but also intersexuality should be used as important biomarker for toxicity assessment of pollutants.

This study investigates the opening force required for shucking farmed oysters to support the development of automated oyster-shucking systems. Oysters sourced from Yeosu and Tongyeong were tested for shell length, width, height, total weight, meat weight, and opening force. Results showed an average opening force of 8.1 kgf for one-year-old Yeosu oysters, 7.4 kgf for one-year-old Tongyeong oysters, and 8.7 kgf for two-year-old Tongyeong oysters, with correlations to shell width, height, and meat weight depending on production sea area and growing age. These findings highlight production sea area and growing age-based differences in oyster characteristics, contributing foundational data to advancing automation in oyster shucking.

This study analyzed the Conservation and Management Measures (CMMs) related to fishing operations using Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) among the measures implemented by Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs) overseeing tuna purse seine fisheries. Additionally, we analyzed the FADs fishing status by sea area and examined the sustainable tuna purse seine fishing using FADs. Significant variations were observed in the number, materials, structure, and timing of FADs deployments, which were influenced by the fishing ground environment and methods in each ocean. These variations resulted in corresponding differences in the CMMs. However, all oceans required the use of non-entangling FADs and recommended biodegradable materials to mitigate marine pollution and bycatch of protected species. An analysis of FADs usage based on field interviews revealed that the total number of FADs deployed across all oceans in 2023 reached 142,020 sets, an increase of approximately 18% compared to 120,680 sets in 2013, despite the enforcement of CMMs by each RFMOs aimed at gradually reducing FADs fishing to promote sustainable fisheries. Each RFMOs aims to gradually reduce FADs fishing rates and ultimately achieve sustainable fisheries. Therefore, to achieve sustainable tuna purse seine fisheries using FADs, prioritizing research on the biodegradable materials used in FADs construction is essential. Furthermore, strict adherence to principles concerning the quantitative use and retrieval of FADs is deemed necessary.

The pioneering effort of Korea's distant water fisheries can be traced back to 1957 when Jinam-ho, affiliated with Jedong Industry Co., embarked on a tuna longline sea trial in the Indian Ocean. The success of this sea trial holds significant importance as it laid the groundwork for Korea to venture into the Pacific tuna fishing grounds, which were predominantly dominated by the United States and Japan at that time. The Korean distant water fisheries experienced remarkable growth in a short period, from the inception period in the 1950s, the pioneering period in the 1960s, the growth period in the 1970s, and the development period in the 1980s. However, a series of changes in the international situation, including the global oil crises of 1973 and 1978, the declaration of 200-nautical-mile zones by coastal states in 1977, and the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in 1982 and the United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement (UNFSA) in 1995, made a significant transformation in the Korean distant water fisheries inevitable. In particular, UNFSA grants the authority to conserve and manage fisheries resources to the Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs), and stipulates that coastal states and fishing nations cooperate with each other through RFMOs. In order to reclaim the once vast fishing grounds and secure maritime territories, it is imperative to have both the keen attention of the fishing industries and the strategic support of the government. In addition, to secure competitiveness in the international community, we should faithfully fulfill the role as a responsible fishing nation and contribute to RFMOs by strengthening scientific activities.

This study evaluates the occupational accident risks of anchovy boat seine fishery in Korea. Using Bayesian network modeling within the framework of the Formal Safety Assessment (FSA) proposed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), data from 508 accident compensation claims between 2018 and 2022 were analyzed. Accidents were categorized into processes (sailing, fishing, maintenance, loading/unloading, and catch processing) and risk factors (hull and working environment, fishing gear and equipment, machinery and equipment, weather and external conditions, and processing equipment). The analysis revealed significant risks associated with fishing processes and hull-related factors. Fishing accounted for 36.42% of all accidents with trips/slips being the most frequent type (29.13%). Bayesian network analysis showed that trips/slips accidents during fishing posed the highest risks (0.001100). The risk of fishing operations was 4.60 times higher than sailing and 30.00 times higher than loading/unloading. The findings indicate that risks vary significantly depending on the processes and risk factors involved. As risk assessments mandated by the 2025 revision of Korean fishing safety laws are expected to remain simple and qualitative, this study underscores the necessity of incorporating quantitative approaches to enhance the reliability and effectiveness of safety management practices.

This study attempted to solve the problem that the current education does not match the actual working environment of the fishing vessel despite the mandatory lifeboat training of international fishing vessel. The survey analyzed the difficulties of using life rafts and communication facilities and found that the main problems were the launch of life rafts, lack of communication equipment proficiency, and absence of emergency training scenarios. Due to the lack of standards for designated educational institutions, the current Seafarers Act has been discovered to be a problem that the accuracy and reliability of education are not consistent with the international fishing vessel agreement and the merchant vessel agreement. Additionally, the training for retreat and emergency response as stipulated by international agreements were not properly reflected in the domestic curriculum. In particular, the current training consists of general contents without considering the characteristics of the fishing crew, and there was a lack of practical emergency response training manuals. Therefore, based on international agreements, this study proposes the development of customized training contents for fishing vessel that takes into account the special working environment and risk factors of them. In addition, it emphasizes the need for policy support, such as strengthening participation of fishing boats in education and training and establishing a legal basis for the operation of emergency life raft organizations.

The purpose of this study is to select a fishing gear deposit marking method for the gear deposit system implemented for gillnet. The fishing gear deposit system was implemented in Korea for the first time in the world in January 2024 for fish trap, and it is scheduled to be expanded to gillnets and buoys by 2026. In this study, an AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) survey was conducted with 34 experts. The AHP analysis method was used to calculate the weights of each criterion that influence the selection of the deposit marking method, in order to determine the optimal marking method that considers both qualitative and quantitative criteria. Experts prioritized the label-type marking and preferred the weight-based deposit unit for its ease of application and ability to measure multiple gear widths at once. This study quantitatively reflects the opinions of experts on the selection of the gillnet deposit system. Future research should examine the impact of marking method on fishing performance, durability, and institutional improvements.
