The turning circle of a ship is the path followed by her center of gravity in making a turn of 360˚degrees or more with helm at constant angle. But generally it means her path traced at full angle of the rudder. For the ordinary ship the bow will be inside and the stern outside this circle. It has been usually understood that the turning circle is not essentinally affected by ship's speed at Froude numbers less than about 0.30. However, it is recently reported that the speed provide considerable effects upon the turning circle in piloting many ships actually at sea. In this paper, the author analyzed what effects the speed could provide on the turning circle theoretically from the viewpoint of ship motions and examined how the alteration of the speed at Froude no. under 0.30 affect the turning circle actually, through experiments of actual ships of a small and large size. The main results were as follows.1. Even though ship's speed at Froude no. under 0.30, the alteration of the speed affects the turning circle considerably.2. When the full ahead speeds at Froude no. under 0.30 of small and large ships were increased about 3 times slow ahead speeds, the mean rates of increase of the advances, tactical diameters and final diameters of thease ships were about 16%, 21% and 19% respectively.3. When the full ahead speeds at Froued no. under 0.30 of small and large ships were increased about 3 times slow ahead speed, the mean rate of increase of the turning circle elements of large ships was greater 10% than that of small ships. 4. When the full ahead speeds at Froued no. under 0.30 of small and large ships were increased about 3times slow ahead speeds, the mean rates of increase of the tactical diameter and final diameter of thease ships were greater than that of the advances of thease ships. 5. When only alteration of speed or sip's head turning is the effective action to avoid navigational fixed hagards, reducing the speed is always more advantageous than increasing the speed in order to shorten fore or transverse distance.

The experimented rangefinder consist of sets of V/A-Code GPS and sets of L1 C/A-code & carrier phase receivers connected by two spread spectrum radio modems in order to measure relative range and bearing between two ship antennas by real time, comparing and analyzing accuracy of both GPS receivers at the fix point on the land by means of executing zero baseline test by C/A code and by carrier phase as well as measuring distance range 5m, 10m, 15m between each other receivers. The results from the measurement of relative range and bearing are as follows as ;1. According to the results from zero baseline test, the average error by C/A-code receiver is less than 0.1m, which proves theories from published books but when each GPS receivers track different satellites, the range accuracy error becomes up to 100m by means of S/A. Because of this sudden wide range error, rangefinder is not appropriate at relative range measurement without additional modification of the algorism of the GPS receiver itself.2. According to relative range measurement by Carrier Phase and zero baseline test at static condition, the range error is less than 3.5cm in case that it passes more than 5 minutes after GPS sets can track simultaneously more than 6 satellites. Its main reason is understood that the phase center of antenna is bigger than geodetic antenna.3. When range measurement of two receivers from 5m, to 10m to 15m, the each range error is 0.340m, 0.190m, 0.011m and each standard variation is 0.0973m, 0.0884m, 0.0790m. The range error and standard variation are in inverse proportion to distance between two receivers. 4. L1 Carrier Phase GPS generally needs 5 minutes to fix and during this ambiguity search, the relative range and bearing angle is shown to be various.

Temperal and spacial analysis for catches have been drawing up a catch distribution chart and analysing catches and CPUE(Catch Per Unit Effort) using catch data with purpose of obtaining basic data to establish a selective method of effective fishing the tuna purse seine fishing ground. The temperature profile section and catch was surveyed to analyse the effect of catch in relation to the fishing ground environment. The results are as follows ;1. As for the catch variation between 1983 and 1984, the catch mainly took place on150˚E, and after that it moved eastward enlarging the range of catch. In the monthly catch variation between January and February, the catches mainly happened on 135˚~ 150˚E, and then moved to the gradually westward. However, from July it moved to the South and from October Southeast.2. As to the eatch ratio for the school associated with the drifted object, the pelagic migrating school and the school associated with the biological objects, the catch ratio for the school associated with the drift objects was the highest. The catch ratio for the school associated with the drifted object was high in June, July and November whiles between January and March for the pelagic migrating school.3. SST(Sea Surface Temperature) was around 28~29〈/TEX〉C〈/TEX〉 on the observing line of 137˚E〈/TEX〉 and the catches took place in the north equatorial counter-current situated on around 5˚~6˚N. SST in the northern summer was 1〈/TEX〉C〈/TEX〉higher than winter and it was about 29~30〈/TEX〉C〈/TEX〉. The catch happened with the center of north equatorial counter-current. The reason why the catch mainly took place on the north equatorial counter-current is that main catch of tuna purse seine was the school associated with drift objects. It is thought that the fishing grounds are made in waters that have many drift objects like drift logs from the coast.

It was investigated that the condition of fishing ground gave what kind of effect school type in relation to the property for the target school after the vertical temperature profile and school type were observed when tuna purse seiner for tuna purse seine was operated in the western pacific Ocean around the equator between December 12, 1993 and January 26, 1994. The results are as follows;1. This study divided fish schools associated with drift objects, a one targeted-operation, and the pelagic migrating fish schools that are another one for the property. The total of 23 operations were complected including 6 that targeted fish schools associated with drift objects and 17 that targeted pelagic migrating fish schools. It was known that the main operation was conducted on pelagic migrating fish school.2. Average and standard deviation of the depth of the surface mixing layer was 86.0m and 13.8m for fish schools associated with drift objects. 61.6m and 13.0m for pelagic migrating fish schools, respectively. The average depth of the surface mixing layer of the pelagic migrating fish schools was lower when compared to the fish schools associated with drift objects however the concentration of standard deviation was higher than those fish schools associated with drifted objects. Accordingly, it was assumed that the effect of vertical temperature profile for pelagic migrating fish school was higher than the fish schools associated with drift objects.

Specificity of catches has been analyzed to japanese tuna purse seine A principle component analysis was used to improve the efficiency of fishing and increase sustainable production and productivity of Korean tuna purse seine. The result are as follows; From the principal component analysis of the fish catches, the first principal component(Z1) to promote principal component score was skipjack Kastsuwonus Pelamis, LINNAEUS and yellowfin tuna Thunnus Albacares, BONNATERRE (Small : smaller than 10kg) and proportion was 86.8% of total. The second principal component(Z2) to increase principal component score was yellowfin tuna (Large : larger than 10kg) and proportion was 9.5%.On the other hand, fish operating that have caught skipjack and yellowfin tuna (Small and Larger) was not so much. Fish catches for one species raised volume of the catches while catches for multi-species decreased it since principal composition score for one species and both species together has been increased.Fish school could be divided into three groups of schools each of which was associated with drift objects, payaho and ship, school associated with shark, whale and porpoise and school of breezing, feeding and jumping from proportion of principal component analysis for fish catches of school types. However, the biological pattern is different among school associated with ship, payaho and school associated with drift objects for analysis eigen vector. School associated with ship, payaho and school associated with drifting object associated is judged as school which be assembled to vessel and drifted log temporary.

Quality and distribution of the TEA(Total Enclosed Area), TSA(Twine Surface Area), solidity ratio and resistance according to the partial nets of the midwater trawl net were examined through experiment at the sea to standardize a design of the midwater trawl net.The results can be summarized as follows;1. The TEA, TSA and resistance of the trawl net were increased definitely according to increasing the scale of the trawl net, and this is the most important factor to design the trawl net.2. As the result of analysis of the distributions of the bag net was smaller than the others. Because TEA for rear end of the wing net is decreased suddenly, we can judge that the trawl net was towed irregularly. 3. The resistance distribution of the partial net was increased suddenly from central part of the bag net and was showed large value in the codend.4. The resistance of the net from the position one of three to gab net and codened charged 75% at all resistance of net.

In order to investigate the properties in distribution and movement of anchovy school catches by the lift net in the Kamak bay and their relation to the environmental factors, i.e., the water temperature and the salinity were observed form June to August in 1997 and compared with the catch of anchovy by the lift net. The results obtained are summarized as follows;1) The water temperature and salinity ranged form 20.0 to 27.0℃ and from 31.2 to 33.8‰, respectively. The water temperature and salinity at the fishing points ranged form 19.7 to 27.2℃ and, from 30.5 to 33.8℃ respectively.2) The water temperature influenced remarkably on the distribution and movement of anchovy school. But the salinity influenced little on the distribution and movement. 3) The catch of anchovy was highest on July, poor second on August, and lowest on June. Anchovy school can be presurmed, they are come from north of bay, visited and distributed through east of bay at the middle of June. Moreover, they spreaded in all bay. Then gradually, when July arrive, they go to the south th nearest the coasts, and they are outflow through the south entrance of bay at the end of August.

For the purpose of leading horse mackerel Trachurus japonicus schools, mackerel Scomber japonicus schools and arrow squid Todarodes pacificus schools, which migrate to the Cheju coast and are caught by the set-net, to the set-net by attracting lamps, we made five attracting lamps and took a practical experiment in the Gwiduk and Dongbuk set-net fishing ground. In the set-net with two bag-nets, we compared the amount of catch of both bag-nets by the means of switching on and off the each attracting lamps in order, switching off the attracting lamps in order which had been switched on and moving an attracting lamp.In the bag-net with an attracting lamp, horse mackerel, mackerel and arrow squid were caught the most, on the other hand, yellow tail Seriola quinqueradiata, striped mullet Mugil cephalus were caught in large quantities in the bag-net without attracting lamp. File fish Stephanolepis cirrhifer, Dusky spinefoot Siganus fuscescens were caught evenly in both bag-nets regardless of an attracting lamp. This result indicates that the amount of horse mackerel, mackerel, arrow squid can be increased by the use of attracting lamps in the set-net fishing method.

This paper describes a Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) modulator and demodulator and the experimented underwater data ommunication equipment to transfer the analog echo signal in real-time from an underwater vehicle to the mother ship. The system consists of an echo signal transfer unit equipped to the vehicle and an ultrasonic receiver equipped on the ship. The former includes an ultrasonic transceiver unit of 180kHz for echo detection and a continuous wave transmitter of 50kHz with a FSK modulator for echo transmission to the ship. The latter includes an ultrasonic receiver of 50kHz and the FSK demodulator. The results of experiment are as follows. 1. The characteristics of the FSK modulating and demodulating circuits designed with the use of C-MOS IC 4046 was good and confirmed its usefulness in underwater data communication system.2. The prototype ultrasonic transceiver unit shows profitable driving power while the pulse duration was short less than 3 msec, but it was found that the driving power is not sufficient while the long pulse duration or continuous wave is used. The gain of the ultrasonic receiver was 80 dB and the receiving bandwidth 700Hz (at - 3 dB point).3. It was found that the system designed by the author has some possibility to use in underwater echo transfer.4. At the FSK modulator, the widths of voltage and frequency which represent linearity were 3.5 V, 1600Hz, respectively, at the FSK demodulator 2.6 V, 700Hz, respectively.

The investigation to evaluate the possible effects of fish behaviour on acoustic target strength was carried out during the 1997 and 1998 hydroacoustic-demersal trawl surveys in the southern waters of Korea. The swimming speed and the target strength of individual, acoustically resolved fished swimming through the sound beam were measured using the split-beam tracking method on board R/V Kaya. The results obtained can be summarized as follows:1. The alongship and athwartship angles between -3dB poionts of a hull mounted 38 kHz split beam tranducer used in these surveys was >3.76˚ and 6.74˚ respectively, and the equal energy contour obtained from the measured beam pattern showed approximately the circular pattern. 2. The swimming speed measured off the south coast of Sorido in 23 January 1997 ranged 0.10 to 0.80 m/s with the average swimming spped of 0.36 m/s, and the target strength ranged -64.8 to -31.7 dB with the average target strength of -52.7 dB. The most dominant species sampled in this survey area were Japanese scaled sardine, Sardinella zunasi and Konoshiro gizzard shad, Konosirus punctatus, respectively.3. A ultrasonic transduce with a single acoustic matching layer has been designed as an attempt to increase the bandwidth of underwater transducer. The wideband resonance condition was accomplished by attaching a single matching layer on the front face of a ceramic resonator composed of a piezoelectric bar, a taper part and a head part. A modified Mason's model was used for the performance analysis and the design of transducers, and the constructed transducers were tested experimentally and numerically by changing the impedance and thickness of the matching layer in the water tank. The obtained results are summarized as follows:1. Measured resonant and antiresonant frequencies of the piezoelectric transducer with no matching layer in air were 24.7 kHz and 25.6 kHz, respectively. 2. Two resonant frequencies of the piezoelectric transducer with a single matching layer were 21.7 kHx and 26.9 kHz, respectively, in air and 21.4 kHz and 22.7 kHz, respectively, with a water load.3. Two distinct resonance peaks in the transmitting voltage response(TVR) of the developed transducer were observed at 22.0 kHz and 25.8 kHz, respectively, with center frequency of 24.0 kHz. The values of TVR at these frequencies were 130.1 dB re 1 μPa/V at 22.0 kHz and 128.5 dB re 1 μPa/V at 25.8 kHz, respectively.Reasonable agreement between the experimental results and the numerical values was achieved.

Most of the underwater noise emitted by small fishing boat are owing to vibration of main engine and generator etc.. This paper describe on the spectrum analysis of underwater noise by engine generating in small fishing boat in order to build up comfortable environment for fisheries man and to reduce ambient noise. The obtained results are summerized as follows:1. When the underwater noise of 10ton class fishing boat measure and the frequency spectrum in varied revolution of engine 750, 900, 1000rpm analyze, the frequency pattern is similar to each other, the faster revolution of engine increase, the higher frequency spectrum level becomes. 2. In comparison of spectrum level of underwater noise between 10ton class and 14ton class fishing boat, the former level is higher than the latter. 3. Frequency spectrum pattern of two 14ton class fishing boat is similar to each other but spectrum level is a little difference, it is suggested to different by fitting condition of engine.

A fish pump makes very important roles in an automation system of an aquaculture farm, thus it has been used widely in order to transfer fishes from one place to the other place automatically. In spite of its significant roles, the efforts for developing performance and promoting efficiency of the fish pump are not sufficient yet. In this paper, a method which makes the fish pump automation system is suggested. Automation of the fish pump can be accomplished by using variable voltage and variable frequency inverter system including induction motors. Especially, very simple logic to generate Pulse width Modulation(PWM) wave to control induction motor efficiently and three steps speed control method to regulate liquid quantity of the fish pump simply are suggested. Owing to the simplifies speed control and PWM wave generation technique, a cheaper microprocessor, 80C196KC, than a digital signal Processor(DSP) can be used to operate control algorithm in induction motor systems for real time control Also, a new idea of remote control for the simplifies novel inverter system by Programmable logic Controller(PLC) without special output unit, digital to analog converter(D/A), is suggested in this paper. Consequently the function of reliability, availability and serviceability of the fish pump system are developed. It will be expected to contribute expanding of application of the fish pump in aquaculture farms because the system can reduce energy consumption and some difficulties according to manual operation prominently.

The purpose of present research is to develop and efficient numerical method for the calculation of potential flow and predict the wave-making resistance for the application to ship design of tuna purse seiner. Havelock was considered the wave resistance of a post extending vertically downwards through the water from the surface, its section by a horizontal plane being the same at all depths and having its breadth small compared with its length. This enables us to elucidate certain points of interest in ship resistance. However, the ship has not infinite draft. So, the problem which is investigated ind detail in this paper is the wave resistance of a mathematical quadratic model in a uniform stream. The paper deals with the numerical calculation of potential flow around the series 60 with forward velocity by the new slender ship theory. This new slender ship theory is based on the asymptotic expression of the Kelvin-source, distributed over the small matrix at each transverse section so as to satisfy the approximate hull boundary condition due to the assumption of slender body. The numerical results using the panel shift method and finite difference method are compared with the experimental results for wigley mono hull. There are no differences in the wave resistance. However, it costs much time to compute not only wave resistance but also wave pattern over some range of Froude numbers. More improvements are strongly desired in the numerical procedure.
