Jeju is a small island of 650,000 with a mixture of cities and farming and fishing villages, but famous for many things including longevity, Haenyeo community culture, strong sprit of Jeju Women, Kim Man Deok, etc. The elderly in Jeju rural areas including Haenyeo women divers run a community centered on labor. The women divers’ community, in particular, is the most representative community, and was inscripted by UNESCO in 2016 as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Additionally, Jeju's residential culture is unique. In Jeju area, Jeong Nang, consisting of 3 wooden bars (gate attached to fence) is used instead of a main gate. When you enter the Jeong Nang (gate), there are the Ankeorae, Barkeorae, and Mokeorae within the same fence (refer to Figure 3 below). In addition to acknowledging the economic and emotional independence between generations in different houses within the same fence, it is also a structure that encourages communal life in the yard for ritual ceremony, communal labor, playing, etc., which guarantees independence between generations plus "filial piety" for the elderly. Voluntary intergenerational communication in this space can be very significant. Jeong Nang is the main gate to connect all the family members within the fence to their neighbors. It is not closed or locked but open which signifies complete trust between neighbors. Specifically, this study seeks to utilize the spatial concept of the community of Ankeorae, Barkeorae, and Mokeorae traditional houses of Jeju as shown in the pictures above. Hanok, a Korean traditional house, is a patriarchal, economically and emotionally dependent community model in which elderly people and younger generations utilize a kitchen in common and the elderly in the house have the highest authority as a dining community. However, each generation in Ankeorae, Bakeorae, and Mokeorae has its own independent kitchen, though they are one large family within a fence connected by Jeong Nang, and they also guarantee economic and emotional independence. Intergenerational privacy is guaranteed. In addition, there is an independent space which is used when a visitor comes in or relatives visit. It is a model for communication between generations, with dignity and independence, respect, love, trust and acceptance coexisting The reasons for choosing the culture of Haenyeo community for the silver model archetype are as follows. Jeju women divers have learned how to dive without oxygen tank since they were young. They have lived on diving as Haenyeo for all their lives. Even after becoming elderly, they continue to live on diving to educate children and grandchildren. They share a sisterhood with grandmothers, great grandmothers, daughters and granddaughters. They are divided into superior, middle, and lower divers according to their ability and experience. And if one reaches 80 and 90 years of age, it will be material in the sea. As for the labor of Haenyeos, there is a saying: "We are daring to die for diving to keep our family welfare." As long as the life continues, their labor continues, their dignity is maintained as they in turn maintain the dignity of nature. Many of the “old-old” elderly divers, in their late 80s and beyond, are found floating dead in the sea while collecting shells without oxygen tank. That’s Haenyeo’s strong spirit. In 2016, for those above the age of 80, the Jeju Provincial Government decided to reinstitute the tradition of maintaining a separate area in the shallows called " Halmang Badang " (“Sea of Grandma”), so that oldest Haenyeos can safely take care of themselves. The way of life of these Haenyeos was similar to the typical life style of retired Babe Boomers, who had been devoted to social contribution until the last minute, returning expert knowledge to the community. That’s why Haenyeo community was chosen as a typical archetype for a new silver model development.

With the increasing interest among modern people in the environment and leisure activities, the social demand for parks and green spaces is increasing. Thus, with the increase in park consumers, it is necessary to systematically investigate and analyze user characteristics and demands and continuously reflect them in park management to increase user satisfaction. Therefore, this study focused on Central Park in Dongtan 1 New Town, Hwaseong City, to analyze and evaluate what variables affect users’ behavior and satisfaction and suggested ways to construct future neighborhood parks. After theoretical considerations, the site was investigated and analyzed, and user behavior and satisfaction were studied through surveys and in-depth interviews. The results showed that user satisfaction with the Central Park was generally high, and the park had a large positive effect on the satisfaction with the residential environment among residents. It seems that the psychological and mental satisfaction provided by the park, which relieves mental and physical stress in modern people’s busy lives and supports static and dynamic recreational activities, will be high. It was judged that if user demands are more actively reflected upon, user satisfaction can be increased, and parks can be vitalized.

The typical Japanese house has the characteristics of open dwellings to make them cool in the hot and humid summer. And then the traditional town house 'Machiya', being built very closely to each other and walled up both sides, it has taken the open-oriented characteristics in itself. The purpose of this study is to clarify that the open-oriented of traditional 'Machiya' has been succeeded to the new 'Machiya' in the latest. The new 'Machiya' shows the open-oriented, taking the ventilative 'Huki-nuke' space of traditional 'Machiya' as the new spatial formal elements, in the changes such as scale material space organization. The characteristics of 'Huki-nuke' space are represented as follows ; 1. The facade of the traditional 'Machiya', which has taken on a semitransparent qualty, has been generally changed to the closing qualty except for the open parts of shop and garage. This facade of the new 'Machiya' has been taken to be in keeping with the existing town as much as possible. 2. A series of three rooms, composed of shop/living dining kitchen/room from the road, have been dispersed to every floors in a building with a very extensive scale. But this serial and linear type remains as the loosefit space, and the long dwellings of the upper stories are divided by type each dwelling unit. 3. 'Tori-niwa', which is a consecutive and penetrating space, connects the road with the rooms of dwelling and functions as the circulation of man thing energy, The new 'Machiya' changed to the multi-story, the corridor and the stair have been fumed up as the elements in the place of 'Tori-niwa' The 'Huki-nuke' space was locted in the hall, stairwell, living dining kitchen room, and so on. 4. The small court yard 'Tsubo-niwa' and back yard 'Ura-niwa' at the both ends of living spaces would be made a hole in a series of rooms and enclosed by the neighboring 'Machiya'. On the contrary the new 'Machiya' at present takes in the private and closing organization enclosing the innercourt. 5. The open-oriented 「In」 or 「Out」 is not brought out because of the delicate spatial formal configuration in the traditional 'Machiya'. But the open-oriented 「In」, all sides being closed by walls, is well brought out in the new 'Machiya'.

New towns and large multi-family housing complexes are being built in the capital region of Korea, with the goal of creating safe and pedestrian-friendly cities. Traffic accidents in such residential complexes, however, is on the rise, creating social problems. While there have been many previous studies on problems with pedestrian environment; there is a dearth of studies that take design-based approach to ensure safety in pedestrian environment within residential complexes. Therefore, this study aims to prevent traffic accidents by properly planning pedestrian environment within multi-family housing complexes, in addition to emphasizing theories related to planning safer pedestrian environment in general. This study found the following design directions required to improve the design theory of pedestrian safety in multi-family housing complexes: (1) Linking traffic facilities and residential complex spaces in Korea; (2) Considering implementation of United Kingdom road systems; (3) Establishing appropriate objectives for each residential complex based on case study. In response to these findings, the study selected the A84BL complex in Hwaseong Dongtan 2 Complex located in Dongtan-myeon, Hwaseong-si in Gyeonggi Province, Korea. Items that can be implemented, as well as spatial design directions, were discussed with a focus on private vehicles, pedestrians, and service vehicles.

In order to address housing issues, alleviate the concentration of urban populations, and resolve other issues regarding residential spaces, large residential complexes have been developed in Korea since the 1970s. The changes to the residential culture due to such development projects propagated rapidly, making the apartment complexes the most representative form of housing in Korea. In developing such large-scale complexes, plans for public open spaces, which play an important role in formulating the quality of residential environment, have been mostly the same, only utilizing the spaces remaining after planning other types of spaces. The current study looks at the case of Tama New Town development project, a Japanese new town development project that has a similar public open space system in large scale residential complex development projects in Korea. In doing so, the current study aims to identify the features of public open space plans. In the conclusion, the study first finds that various public open spaces must be reviewed and introduced in term of predicting social demands. Second, the study suggests the policy-makers should actively introduce pedestrian paths as a public open space. Third, the study deduces the planning implications of applying the principle of original landscape preservation.

Unlike the general downtown parks, the new town landscaping work has significant residents’opinion with enormous influence on the work process. Therefore, mutual understanding with residents is very important in New Town landscape construction. To realize a role of residents, this study analyzed the types and characteristics of residents for landscape planting targeting Gwanggyo New Town at South Korea. 142 opinions of residents received officially to the project executor were used for research materials to the subject of landscape planting. As a result of analysis, residents' opinions were received in summer and spring owing to the nature of plant materials. Regarding the respondents, males are much more than females. In the opinion, there are most of ‘expressing complaints and demanding improvements’ rather than ‘contact and information request’ or ‘new proposals and recommendations’. As a result of typifying them after analyzing the contents of the opinions, 10 types were drawn. The demand for ‘dead wood processing’ was most, next, there are the demand for additional planting, that for slope vegetation, that for riverbed vegetation revetment loss, etc. The researcher looked into the opinions of residents in depth by analyzing the association between the number of opinions and the contents of opinions. Those who express the 1st opinion pointed out ‘vegetation revetment loss’ a lot but those who have the 6th-10th opinion mentioned ‘dead wood processing’ a lot so there was a significant difference finally.
