        Considering the domestic situation where all nuclear power plants are located on seaside, the interim storage site is also likely to be located on coastal site. Maritime transportation is inevitable and the its risk assessment is very important for safety. Currently, there is no independently developed maritime transportation risk assessment code in Korea, and no research has been conducted to evaluate the release of radioactive waste due to the immersion of transport cask. Previous studies show that the release rate of radionuclides contained in a submerged transport cask is significantly affected by the area of flow path generated at the breached containment boundary. Due to the robustness of a cask, the breach is the most likely generated between the lid and body of cask. CRIEPI investigated the effect of cask containment on the release rate of radioactive contents into the ocean and proposed a procedure to calculate the release rate considering the socalled barrier effect. However, the contribution of O-ring on the release rate was not considered in the work. In this study, test and analysis is performed to determine the equivalent flow path gap considering the influence of O-rings. These results will be implemented in the computational model to assess sea water flow through a breached containment boundary using CFD techniques to assess radionuclide release rates. To evaluate the release rate as a function of lid displacement, a small containment vessel is engineered and a metal O-ring of the Helicoflex HN type is installed, which is the most commonly used one in transport and storage casks. The lid of containment vessel is displaced in vertical and horizontal direction and the release rate of the vessel was quantified using the helium leak test and the pressure drop test. Through this work, the relationship between the vertical opening displacement and horizontal sliding displacement of the cask lid and the actual flow path area created is established. This will be implemented in the CFD model for flow rate calculation from a submerged transport cask in the deep sea. In addition, the compression of the O-ring causes very small gaps, such as capillaries. In these cases, Poiseuille’s law is used to calculate the capillary flow rate.

        In Korea, Kori Unit 1 and Wolsong Unit 1, have been permanently shut down in 2017 and 2019, and more nuclear power plants are expected to be permanently shut down after continued operation successively. Spent fuel has been generated during operation and stored in spent fuel pools. Due to the expected saturation of spent fuel pools within the next several decades, transportation of a huge amount of spent fuel is anticipated to interim storage facilities or final disposal facilities, even though the specific location is not decided. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) states that every environmental report prepared for the licensing stage of a Pressurized Water Reactor shall contain a statement concerning risk during the transportation of fuel and radioactive wastes to and from the reactor. Thus, the licensee should ensure that the radiological effects in accidents, as well as normal conditions in transport, do not exceed certain criteria or be small if cannot be numerically quantified. Specific conditions that a full description and detailed analysis of the environmental effects of transportation of fuel and wastes to and from the reactor are exempted are specified in 10 CFR Part 51. Since there are no official requirements for radiological dose assessment for workers and public during the transportation of spent fuel in Korea, the margin when applying the U.S. regulatory criteria to the environmental impact assessment during the transport of spent fuel generated from domestic nuclear power plants is evaluated. A different approach would be needed due to the difference in the characteristics of spent fuel and geographical features.

        Given the situation in the Republic of Korea that all nuclear power plants are located at the seaside, the interim storage facility is also likely to be located at seaside and the maritime transportation of Spent Nuclear Fuel is considered inevitable. The Republic of Korea does not have an independently developed maritime transportation risk assessment code, and no research has been conducted to evaluate the release rate of radionuclides from a submerged transportation cask in the sea. Therefore, there is a need to develop a technology that can assess the impact of immersion accidents and establish a regulatory framework for maritime transportation accidents. The release rate of radionuclides should be calculated from the flow rate through a flow path in the breached containment boundary. According to the cask design criteria, it is anticipated that even under severe accident conditions, the flow path size will be very small. Previous studies have evaluated fluid flow passing through micro-scale channel by integrating internal and external flows within and around a transport cask. As part of the evaluation, a comprehensive “Full-Field Model” incorporating external flow fields and a localized “Local-Field Model” with micro-scale flow paths were constructed. Sub-modeling techniques were employed to couple the flow field calculated by the two models. The aforementioned approach is utilized to conduct the evaluation of fluid flow passing through micro-scale flow paths. This study aims to evaluate fluid flow passing through micro-scale flow paths using the aforementioned CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) method and aims to code the findings. The Gaussian Process Regression technique, a machine learning model, is utilized for developing a mathematical metamodel. The selected input parameters for coding are organized and their respective impacts are analyzed. The range of these selected parameters is tailored to suit domestic environments, and computational experiments are planned through Design of Experiments. The flow path size is included as an input parameter in the coded model. In cases where the flow path size becomes extremely small, making it impractical to use CFD techniques for calculations, Poiseuille’s law is employed to calculate the release rate. In this study, a model is developed to evaluate the release rate of radionuclides using CFD and mathematical equations covering the whole possible range of flow path size in a lost cask in the deep sea. The model will be used in the development of a maritime transportation risk assessment code suitable for the situation and environment in Korea.

        PURPOSES : The main purpose of this study is to identify vulnerable areas by evaluating public transit accessibility for the introduction of smart mobility. METHODS : This study proposes a methodology for analyzing public transportation accessibility. We identified the less accessible areas of public transit in Daegu Metropolitan City by dividing them into low- and high-facilitated areas considering travel demand and developed plans to introduce smart mobility based on the analysis results. RESULTS : Areas vulnerable to public transportation in Daegu Metropolitan City can be divided into those with low public transportation accessibility and low usage rates, those with good public transportation accessibility but low usage rates, and those with low public transportation accessibility but high usage rates. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the results of this study, it is possible to introduce customized services for each area with poor public transit accessibility, and some of the inconveniences experienced by citizens using public transit are expected to be resolved.

        From an evolutionary perspective, it is speculated that termites have evolved to construct tunnels in a manner that optimizes search and transport efficiency. While numerous studies have focused on search efficiency, there has been limited research on transport efficiency due to the challenges associated with direct field observations. To address this challenge, we developed an individual-based model to simulate the transport process. Using the model, we examine the effects of several key variables on transport efficiency, Based on our results, we discuss potential strategies that termites might employ to optimize transport efficiency. In addition, we briefly discuss ways to improve the realism of the model.

        Since 2024, small business are also going to be ruled under the Serious Accident Punishment Act. As the scope of the law expands, the small logistics companies are required to pay more attention on preventing serious accidents on the field. Freight vehicle accidents can cause personnel accidents and cargo accidents which are the two serious accidents that the Serious Accident Punishment Act is trying to prevent. The purpose of this research are to study the factors that cause the serious accidents that happens in the small logistics companies and to suggest preventive. The results of the study shows that fall prevention is the top-priority and then driving experience, safety management, and cargo driving hours. However, the gaps between the evaluation values of each are not huge, which means all the preventives are significant.

        Marketing research in hospitality and tourism has been rising continuously. This study provides a systematic review on marketing research and air transport. It identifies key themes and tracks the changes in scholarly researchers’ perspectives pre and post pandemic. By approaching this review not only from the tourism and air transport perspectives, but also from the marketing perspective, this allows the transfer of theories between disciplines, an added value that provides the basis for a field of research to expand and further evolve. Finally, a conceptual framework and an agenda for future research based on emerging research topics are provided.

        Compared to operational wastes, nuclear power plant (NPP) decommissioning wastes are generated in larger quantities within a short time and include diverse types with a wider range of radiation characteristics. Currently used 200 L drums and IP-2 type transport containers are inefficient and restrictive in packaging and transporting decommissioning wastes. Therefore, new packaging and transport containers with greater size, loading weight, and shielding performance have been developed. When transporting radioactive materials, radiological safety should be assessed by reflecting parameters such as the type and quantity of the package, transport route, and transport environment. Thus far, safety evaluations of radioactive waste transport have mainly targeted operational wastes, that have less radioactivity and a smaller amount per transport than decommissioning wastes. Therefore, in this study, the possible radiation effects during the transport from NPP to disposal facilities were evaluated to reflect the characteristics of the newly developed containers and decommissioning wastes. According to the evaluation results, the exposure dose to transport workers, handling workers, and the public was lower than the domestic regulatory limit. In addition, all exposure dose results were confirmed, through sensitivity analysis, to satisfy the evaluation criteria even under circumstances when radioactive materials were released 100% from the container.

        An all-perovskite oxide heterostructure composed of SrSnO3/Nb-doped SrTiO3 was fabricated using the pulsed laser deposition method. In-plane and out-of-plane structural characterization of the fabricated films were analyzed by x-ray diffraction with θ-2θ scans and φ scans. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurement was performed to check the film’s composition. The electrical transport characteristic of the heterostructure was determined by applying a pulsed dc bias across the interface. Unusual transport properties of the interface between the SrSnO3 and Nb-doped SrTiO3 were investigated at temperatures from 100 to 300 K. A diodelike rectifying behavior was observed in the temperature-dependent current-voltage (IV) measurements. The forward current showed the typical IV characteristics of p-n junctions or Schottky diodes, and were perfectly fitted using the thermionic emission model. Two regions with different transport mechanism were detected, and the boundary curve was expressed by ln I = -1.28V - 13. Under reverse bias, however, the temperature- dependent IV curves revealed an unusual increase in the reverse-bias current with decreasing temperature, indicating tunneling effects at the interface. The Poole-Frenkel emission was used to explain this electrical transport mechanism under the reverse voltages.

        According to attached Table 1 of the Enforcement Ordinance of the Nuclear Safety Act, the effective dose limit of transport workers shall not exceed 6 mSv per year. In addition, the enforcement ordinance defines a transport worker as a person who transports radioactive substances outside the radiation management area and does not correspond to a radiation worker. In the nuclear power plants (NPPs), substances in radiation management areas are frequently transported inside or outside the plant. During loading of substances in the radiation management area onto the vehicle, the transport workers (including driver) are located outside the radiation management area. And also the exposure dose of transport workers is managed by using Automatic Dose Reader (ADR). However, the exposure dose of transport workers managed by NPP licensee is limited to the exposure caused by the transport actions required by the plant. This means that radiation exposure caused by the transport of radioactive materials carried out separately by individual transport workers other than the plant requirements cannot be managed. Therefore, even if the NPP licensee manages the transport worker’s dose below 6 mSv, it is difficult to guarantee that the total annual exposure dose, including the transport worker’s individual transport behavior, is less than 6 mSv. Therefore, it would be appropriate to manage the dose of the transport worker by the transport worker’s agency rather than by the NPP licensee.

        As nuclear power plants are operated in Korea, low and intermediate-level radioactive wastes and spent nuclear fuels are continuously generated. Due to the increase in the amount of radioactive waste generated, the demand for transportation of radioactive wastes in Korea is increasing. This can have radiological effect for public and worker, risk assessment for radioactive waste transportation should be preceded. Especially, if the radionuclides release in the ocean because of ship sinking accident, it can cause internal exposure by ingestion of aquatic foods. Thus, it is necessary to analyze process of internal exposure due to ingestion. The object of this study is to analyze internal exposure by ingestion of aquatic foods. In this study, we analyzed the process and the evaluation methodology of internal exposure caused by aquatic foods ingestion in MARINRAD, a risk assessment code for marine transport sinking accidents developed by the Sandia National Laboratory (SNL). To calculate the ingestion internal exposure dose, the ingestion concentrations of radionuclides caused by the food chain are calculated first. For this purpose, MARINRAD divide the food chain into three stages; prey, primary predator, and secondary predator. Marine species in each food chain are not specific but general to accommodate a wide variety of global consumer groups. The ingestion concentrations of radionuclides are expressed as an ingestion concentration factors. In the case of prey, the ingestion concentration factors apply the value derived from biological experiments. The predator's ingestion concentration factors are calculated by considering factors such as fraction of nuclide absorbed in gut, ingestion rate, etc. When calculating the ingestion internal exposure dose, the previously calculated ingestion concentration factor, consumption of aquatic food, and dose conversion factor for ingestion are considered. MARINRAD assume that humans consume all marine species presented in the food chain. Marine species consumption is assumed approximate and conservative values for generality. In the internal exposure evaluation by aquatic foods ingestion in this study, the ingestion concetration factor considering the food chain, the fraction of nuclide absorbed in predator’s gut, ingestion rate of predator, etc. were considered as influencing factors. In order to evaluate the risk of maritime transportation reflecting domestic characteristics, factors such as domestic food chains and ingestion rate should be considered. The result of this study can be used as basis for risk assessment for maritime transportation in Korea.

        A large amount of radioactive wastes are generated during the decommissioning of the nuclear power plant. The need for radioactive waste management is emerging as the permanent suspension of domestic nuclear power plants Gori Unit 1 and Wolseong Unit 1 has been decided. According to the analysis of the number of land transportation of Gori Unit 1, when the dismantling period is expected to be five years, the number of land transportation is 459. Accordingly, measures are needed to improve the acceptability of residents on land transportation routes. Currently, there is little preparation for the acceptance of residents by transporting radioactive waste in Korea. This study analyzed the literature related to radioactive waste and nuclear power generation to derive factors that affect the acceptance of residents on the transport route of radioactive waste. Factors Affecting Resident Acceptability • Mistrust of the measured dose levels themselves • fear of radiation • Lack of training in radiation, nuclear power • Insufficient information for easy identification of dose and concentration • economic compensation In order to improve the acceptability of residents when transporting radioactive waste on land, it is necessary to scientifically prove the safety of the low and intermediate level radioactive waste transport path, and policy improvement considering the acceptability of residents is needed. In subsequent studies, it is necessary to specifically derive solutions to the above factors. This study is significant in that it derived factors that could affect low and intermediate level radioactive waste transportation, considering that no countermeasures have been prepared to improve the acceptance of residents by transporting low and intermediate level radioactive waste in Korea.

        Canada’s Pickering Unit 3 was performed a three-stage decontamination from June to August 1989 in preparation for pressure tube replacement. The first step was a reducing CAN-DECON treatment to dissolve the magnetic film inside the reactor, which was applied following partial defueling of the reactor core. The second step was an oxidative dilute alkaline permanganate treatment to remove the chromium-rich oxides of the stainless steel parts. And the final CAN-DECON step was applied continuously after completely removing fuel from the reactor core. In situ pipe gamma-ray spectroscopy techniques were applied to measure radioactivity within feeder piping during various stages of Pickering Unit 3 decontamination. Measurements were performed at a maximum dose rate of 5 mSv/h, and both the detector and the scanned feeder pipe were properly shielded from other neighboring pipes. 60Co was the dominant radionuclide in feeder piping prior to decontamination. And radionuclides 103Ru, 95Zr, 95Nb, 59Fe, 140La and 124Sb were detected. The Co-60 radioactivity was 2.09×105 Bq/cm2 before decontamination and 3.11×103 Bq/cm2 after decontamination in the inlet feeder pipe T18. And in the outlet feeder pipe P21, it is 2.56×104 Bq/cm2 before decontamination and 2.04×103 Bq/cm2 after decontamination.

        LILW disposal repository in Gyeongju, South Korea is considered with a concrete mixture that uses Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) partially substituted with supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). The degradation of cementitious materials that result from chemical and physical attacks is a major concern in the safety of radioactive waste disposal. We present a reactive transport model utilized as one of the geochemical simulation approaches for the timescales of concern that range from hundreds to thousands of years. The purpose of this study is to investigate the sensitivity of parameters in concrete disposal systems and to evaluate the influence of various assumptions on the chemical degradation of the systems using a reactive transport model. A reactive transport model in the concrete disposal vault was developed to evaluate the behavior of engineered barriers composed of cementitious materials. The sensitivity analysis was performed using reactive transport models through the coupling between COMSOL and PHREEQC. The databases selected for the analysis are the Thermochimie database presented by ANDRA. Among many variables considered, two variables that can highly affect chemical degradation were selected for detailed sensitivity analysis for dealing with uncertainties. This is important because the chemical degradation mechanism is generally sensitive to precipitation and diffusion coefficient. The first factor is precipitation, which might be the most important factor in chemical degradation because it acts as a calcium leaching of cementitious materials in a disposal system in a highly alkaline environment, increasing the porosity of the system. To predict the change in annual precipitation, the measurement of the precipitation observatory station in the nearest area of Gyeongju for the past 80 years was collected. The second factor is the diffusion coefficient, which plays an essential role in the durability of the concrete disposal system, promoting the decalcification of cementitious minerals, accelerating system degradation, and increasing the porosity of its system, thereby facilitating the migration of radionuclides. The diffusion coefficient values used in studies similar to this work were calculated and evaluated using the box-and-whisker method. The results of the sensitivity analyses for the reactive transport model in the concrete disposal system will be presented. The sensitivity cases show that the results obtained are much more sensitive to changes in transport parameters.

        With the increasing demand for a repository to safely dispose of high-level radioactive waste (HLW), it is imperative to conduct a safety assessment for HLW disposal facilities for ensuring the permanent isolation of radionuclides. For this purpose, the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) is currently developing the Adaptive Process-based total system performance assessment framework for a geological disposal system (APro). A far-field module, which specifically focuses on fluid flow and radionuclide transport in the host rock, is one of several modules comprising APro. In Korea, crystalline rock is considered the host rock for deep geological disposal facilities due to its high thermal conductivity and extremely low permeability. However, the presence of complex fracture system in crystalline rock poses a significant challenge for managing fluid flow and nuclide transport. To address this challenge, KAERI is participating in DECOVALEX-2023 Task F1, which seeks to compare and verify modeling results using various levels of performance assessment models developed by each country for reference disposal systems. Through the benchmark problems suggested by DECOVALEX-2023 Task F1, KAERI adopts the Discrete Fracture-Matrix (DFM) as the primary fracture modeling approach. In this study, the transport processes of reactive tracers in fractured rock, modeled with DFM, are simulated. Specifically, three different tracers (conservative, decaying, adsorbing) are introduced through the fracture under identical injecting conditions. Thereafter, the breakthrough curves of each tracer are compared to observe the impact of reactive tracers on nuclide transport. The results of this study will contribute to a better understanding of nuclide behavior in subsurface fractured rock under various conditions.

        The design of a radioactive waste disposal system should include both natural and engineered barriers to prevent radionuclide leakage and groundwater contamination. Colloids and gases can accelerate the movement of radionuclides and affect their behavior. It is important to consider these factors in the long-term stability evaluation of a deep geological repository. An experimental setup was designed to observe the acceleration of nuclide behavior caused by gas-mediated transport in a simulated high temperature and pressure environment, similar to a deep disposal repository. The study used specimens to simulate gas flow in engineered barriers, based on conditions 1000 years after repository closure. In the experiment, bentonite WRK with a dry density of 1.61 g/cm3 was used after compaction. Measurements were taken of the saturation time and gas permeability of compacted bentonite. In this study, gas was injected into saturated buffer materials at various pressures to evaluate the penetration phenomenon of the buffer material according to the gas pressure. It was observed that gas penetrated the buffer material and moved upward in the form of gas bubbles at a specific pressure. Furthermore, when a flow was continuously induced to penetrate the buffer material, erosion occurred, and the eroded particles were found to be able to float upward or be transported by gas bubbles. In future studies, analysis will be conducted on the transport rate of fine particles according to the size of gas bubbles and the characteristics of the nuclides adsorbed on the fine particles.

        This study investigates the behavior of the thermal conductivity among material properties in order to develop a thermal evaluation methodology of spent fuel assembles in a transport cask. It is inefficient to model each element of the spent fuel assembly in detail, and it is generally calculated by modeling the effective thermal conductivity (ETC). The ETC model was developed to allow a much simpler representation of a spent fuel assembly within a fuel compartment by treating the entire spent fuel rod array and the surrounding fill gas within the confines of the compartment as a homogenous solid material. The fuel rod assembly and surrounding gas are modeled with an effective conductivity that is designed to yield an overall conduction heat transfer rate that is equivalent to the combined effect of local conduction and radiation heat transfer in a plane through the assembly. When this model is applied to the transport cask, it tends to predict the cladding peak temperature lower than the results of detailed model in which the fuel rod arrangement and shape of the fuel assembly are simulated. As for the tendency of the error, the model tended to under-predict when basket temperature was lower than a certain temperature, and over-predict when it was higher. The purpose of this study is to investigate the attenuation effect of the cladding peak temperature on the related variables when the ETC model is applied to the transport cask. In addition, based on the thermal characteristics of this model, a correction factor that can compensate for this attenuation effect is presented. This correction factor is obtained by finding the difference between a separate ETC homogeneous model and a separate detailed fuel model, rather than directly applying the ETC calculated from the detailed fuel model to the transport cask.

        Currently, the development of evaluation technology for vibration and shock loads transmitted to spent nuclear fuel and structural integrity of spent nuclear fuel under normal conditions of transport is progressing in Korea by the present authors. Road transportation tests using surrogate spent nuclear fuel were performed in September, 2020 using a test model of KORAD-21 transportation cask and sea transportation tests were conducted from September 30 to October 4, 2021. Finally, the shake table tests and rolling test were conducted from October 31 to November 2, 2022. The shake table test was performed with the input load produced conservatively from the data obtained from the road and sea transportation tests. The test input was produced based on the power spectral densities and shock response spectrums from the transportation tests. In addition to the test inputs from the road and sea tests, sine sweep input and half sine input were used to verify the vibration characteristics of assemblies under boundary conditions during normal conditions of transport. Because the input load of the shake table test was produced conservatively, a slightly larger strain than the strain value measured in road and sea transportation tests was measured from the shake table tests. In the case of the sea test, it is considered that the process of enveloping the data in the 20 to 80 Hz range generated by the engine propeller system was performed excessively conservatively. As a result of analyzing the test results for the difference in boundary conditions, it was confirmed that the test conditions of loading the basket generated a relatively large strain compared to the conditions of loading the disk assembly for the same input load. Therefore, it is concluded that a transportation cask having a structure in which a basket and a disk are separated, such as KORAD-21, is more advantageous in terms of vibration shock load characteristics under normal conditions of transport than a transportation cask having an integral internal structure in which a basket and a disk are a single unit. However, this effect will be insignificant because the load itself transmitted to the disk assembly is very small.

        Flow-induced vibration can lead to fretting wear damage of fuel rods and spacer grids in nuclear reactors. Similarly, during the transport of spent nuclear fuel assemblies, continuous vibration and intermittent impact might also result in fretting wear due to dynamic interaction. Therefore, it is important to evaluate fuel rod damage due to fretting wear under such transport conditions. This study examines spent nuclear fuel rod specimens fabricated with hydride cladding tubes and simulated pellets, with hydrogen content ranging from 200 to 700 ppm and oxide film thickness ranging from 25 to 100 micrometers. Tests were conducted under a worst-case scenario, assuming continuous exposure to that condition during the expected transport time. Results indicate that the wear depth of all rod specimens occurred within the oxide film, suggesting a high resistance to fretting wear during transportation.

CRIEPI investigated the effect of cask containment on the release rate of radioactive contents into the ocean and proposed a procedure to calculate the release rate considering the so-called barrier effect. However, the contribution of O-ring on the release rate was not considered in the work. In this study, test and analysis is performed to determine the equivalent flow path gap considering the influence of O-rings. These results will be implemented in the computational model to assess sea water flow through a breached containment boundary using CFD techniques to assess radionuclide release rates. The evaluation of release rate due to container lid gaps has been performed by CRIEPI and BAM. In CRIEPI, the gap of the flow path was calculated from the roughness of the container surface without a quantitative assessment of the severity of the accident. In this work, to evaluate the release rate as a function of lid displacement, a small containment vessel is engineered and a metal Oring of the Helicoflex HN type is installed, which is the most commonly used one in transport and storage casks. The lid of containment vessel is displaced in vertical and horizontal direction and the release rate of the vessel was quantified using the helium leak test and the pressure drop test. Through this work, the relationship between the vertical opening displacement and horizontal sliding displacement of the cask lid and the actual flow path area created is established. This will be implemented in the CFD model for flow rate calculation from a submerged transport cask in the deep sea.
