We studied antioxidant activity and inhibitory effect of α-glucosidase from aqueous, ethanolic and methanolic fractions of Galla rhois. In FRAP and ORAC assay for measuring antioxidant activity, we confirmed that Galla rhois extracts had strong antioxidant activity and ethanolic and methanolic extracts were relatively stronger than aqueous extract. We used trolox as a positive control. In order to measure the inhibitory effect of α-glucosidase, we compared acarbose and Galla rhois extracts. As a result of α-glucosidase inhibitory assay, aqueous, ethanolic and methanolic extracts of Galla rhois showed high inhibitory activitity and ethanolic and methanolic extracts were relatively stronger than aqueous extract. The 50% inhibitory concentrations (IC50s) of acarbose, aqueous, ethanolic and methanolic fractions were 0.45 mM, 0.53 μg/mL, 0.415 μg/mL and 0.37 μg/mL, respectively. These results suggest that Galla rhois extracts can be a clinically useful anti-diabetic ingredient, indicating that it needs to be fractionated and isolated and should be further investigated.

Understanding the temporal variability of agricultural parameters derived from historical climate data is important for planning in agriculture. Therefore, this study assessed the magnitude and recent trends of the transpiration ratio defined as the crop water use per harvested yield for the period from 1980 to 2010. The crop water use was estimated using the Food and Agriculture Organization’s Crop Wat model for eight administrative provinces in Korea. The temporal trends and spatial uncertainty were explored using the Mann-Kendall and Theil Sen’s methods. The regional average rice yield was 6.31 t ha-1(range 5.9 to 6.9 t ha-1). The results showed that the rice yield in Korea increased by 26 kg ha-1yr-1. Overall, the regional average transpiration ratio was 1,298 m3 t-1 (range 1,162 to 1,470 m3 t-1). From 1980 to 2010, the transpiration ratio decreased by 8.2 m3 t-1 (range 2.7 to 14.4 m3 t-1), largely as a result of the increasing yield. The statistical approach to historical data used in this study also provides a basis for simulating the future transpiration ratio.

To evaluate utilization of persimmon peels as novel bio-materials, the general composition and antioxidant activities of Daebong persimmon vinegar (DPV), Daebong persimmon peel vinegar (DPPV) and commercial persimmon vinegar (CPV) were investigated. The pH of DPPV had slightly higher than that of other vinegars. The titratable acidities of vinegars were 3.24% (DPV), 2.77% (DPPV) and 7.78% (CPV), respectively. The reducing sugar contents showed that DPV had slightly higher than that of other vinegars. The browning degree of DPV was lower than CPV in contrast to the turbidity. The results of Hunter’s color value have showed that overall values of CPV had significantly higher than DPPV and DPV. The total phenolic contents of DPV and CPV were 19.49 and 17.13 mg/100g GAE, respectively. The total flavonoid contents of DPPV (8.04 mg/100g CE) were two fold higher than that of DPV (3.85 mg/100g CE). The antioxidant activities, by DPPH and FRAP assays, of DPV showed stronger than those of other vinegars. Free sugars were mainly composed of fructose and glucose. Organic acids were presented in the order acetic acid, succinic acid, malic acid, tartaric acid, citric acid and oxalic acid. These results suggest that the Daebong persimmon peels could be utilized for vinegar production as a health-benefit material.
