        As measures against the environmental pollution, maximum efforts to improve of the environmental pollution have also been made; removal of the contaminated sediments of the bay and the coastal area, monitoring of several heavy metal levels in fishes, shell fishes, sea water and sediment, and so on. The objective of this research is to investigate how much metals are included in the sea water, sediment, fishes and shell fishes in kyeongnam coastal area. Specifically, we are investigating the relationships between the metal included in fishes and sea water, and shell fishes and sediment. and heavy metals and heavy metals respectively. Heavy metals over the studied component and area, the average concentrations of Pb, Cd, Cr and Hg in sea water were 0.0029 mg/L, 0.0005 mg/L, 0.0016 mg/L and ND, those of sediment were 11.9583 mg/kg, 0.2136 mg/kg, 1.9158 mg/kg and Hg 0.0108 mg/kg, those of fishes were 0.4358 mg/kg, 0.0726 mg/kg, 1.1188 mg/kg and Hg 0.0622 mg/kg, and those of shellfishes were Pb 0.6738 mg/kg, Cd 0.2223 mg/kg, Cr 0.5516 mg/kg and Hg 0.0117 mg/kg respectively. In the relationship test, Cd was significant in the relationship between fishes and sea water, and Hg was significant in the relationship between sediment and shellfishes.

        Ultrafine titanium carbide particles were synthesized by the reaction of liquid-magnesium and vaporized TiCl+CCl(x = 1 and 2) solution. Fine titanium carbide particles with about 50 nm were successfully produced by combining Ti and C atoms released by chloride reduction of magnesium, and vacuum was then used to remove the residual phases of MgCl and excess Mg. Small amounts of impurities such as O, Fe, Mg and Cl were detected in the product, but such problem can be solved by more precise process control. The lattice parameter of the product was 0.43267 nm, near the standard value. With respect to the reaction kinetics, the activation energy for the reactions of TiCl+CCland Mg was found to 69 kJ/mole, which was about half value against the use of TiCl+CCl, and such higher reactivity of the former contributed to increase the stoichiometry until the level of TiC and decrease the free carbon content below 0.3 wt.%.

        The adsorption of heavy metals in the waste water carried out on the various domestic clays and waste pottery. The effect of parameters such as pH, temperature, adsorption time and coexisting cations on the adsorption ability and characteristics were investigated to find out whether the clays could be used as adsorbents. Adsorption equilibrium was reached within 20 minutes on all the clays. The optimum pH was found to be above 5. When other cations such as Cu(II) or Zn(II) coexisted with Pb(II), the adsorption amount of Pb(II) decreased because of competing adsorption.

        Recently, it has been found that mechanical alloying (MA) facilitates the nanocomposites formation of metal-metal oxide systems through solid-state reduction during ball milling. In this work, we studied the MA effect of FeO-M (M = Al, Ti) systems, where pure metals are used as reducing agents. It is found that composite powders in which O and TiO are dispersed in -Fe matrix with nano-sized grains are obtained by mechanical alloying of FeO with Al and Ti for 25 and 75 hours, respectively. It is suggested that the large negative heat associated with the chemical reduction of magnetite by aluminum is responsible for the shorter MA time for composite powder formation in FeO-Al system. X-ray diffraction results show that the reduction of magnetite by Al and Ti if a relatively simple reaction, involving one intermediate phase of FeAlO or FeTiO. The average grain size of -Fe in Fe-TiO composite powders is in the range of 30 nm. From magnetic measurement, we can also obtain indirect information about the details of the solid-state reduction process during MA.
