        This study aims to investigate the effects of using AI chatbots in Korean English education from a macro perspective. For this purpose, 19 experimental studies are selected to conduct a meta-analysis, synthesizing the results of 51 individual study cases. The results of this study are as follows: First, it is found that the overall effect size of using chatbots is more than medium size meaning that a chatbot is an effective tool to learn English. Second, in the aspects of linguistic competence and affective categories, each shows over medium sizes like the overall effect size. In details of the dependent variables, vocabulary and speaking in linguistic competence and motivation in affective categories, large effect sizes are shown. Third, the effect sizes are getting larger, as the younger the students are, the longer the experiment period lasts, and the more purpose-built the chatbot is. But the differences in the effect sizes in terms of these moderators (e.g., school level, experiment period, and chatbot type) are not significant. Lastly, it is suggested that follow-up studies are needed to collect a sufficient number of experimental study cases and subdivide the variables for performing a more detailed meta-anlysis.

        This study is to explore and analyze three current English teachers’ thoughts and attitudes on their TEE practices in elementary English classroom settings. Adopting a qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews, teachers’ journals, and informal communications from the three elementary school English teachers. The analysis of data revealed three main themes: 1) thoughts on effective TEE classes, 2) factors affecting TEE classes, 3) the difficulties of conducting TEE classes. The participants presented their views on effective TEE classes. They also expressed their opinion on the timing and usage of TEE. The teachers said TEE classes are influenced by teachers’ English communication ability and willingness to use English as the instructional language, students’ English proficiency and the class atmosphere. Finally, the participants said that TEE classes were difficult due to the same factors influencing TEE class effectiveness. This study has implications for the direction of TEE implementation in elementary education.

        This study analyses the communicative functions of listening scripts extracted from the 2015 elementary school English 6 and middle school English 1 textbooks in terms of continuity. Auditory data corpora were drawn from all five elementary school English textbooks and five most widely used middle school English textbooks. Each sentence of listening scripts was manually tagged based on the classification of communication functions presented in the 2015 Revised National Curriculum. The corpora were analyzed using 14 syntactic complexity measures with the L2 Syntactic Complexity Analyzer (Lu, 2010). The findings of this study show that the continuity between the elementary school English 6 and the middle school English 1 textbooks is relatively well-organized. However, concerning the sequence, the elementary school English 6 was found to be more complex than the middle school English 1 in terms of syntactic complexity. It is suggested that future textbook development should correct the reversed complexity in listening scripts found in this study.

        This study explores the morphological awareness of different graders with different vocabulary levels. A total of 275 elementary students (148 5th graders and 127 6th graders) across small, midium and large cities are selected to test their morphological awareness. First, they were divided into 30%, 40% and 30% of students according to their vocabulary levels. Second, they were tested on the recognition tests, the production tests and the distributional tests of English derivational morphemes divided by the prefixes and the suffixes appeared in the English textbooks. The results are: The recognition and production tests show significant differences for both vocabulary levels and different English levels across different grades. However, the distributional test shows no clear difference like the other two tests. Based on the results, the study draws the conclusion that morphological awareness is developing in the order of recognition, production and distribution of morphologized words in sentences. In other words, recognition of forms precedes the production of forms, and the production is followed by the functional awareness of morphologized words.

        The purpose of this study is to explore, describe and analyze the English education process of underachieving elementary school students. To this end, qualitative research methods were used. The analyses produce two themes: positive and negative English learning experiences. Students are motivated when teachers are friendly and give them positive responses. Teaching materials including interesting games give more motivation to students. Content coverage for one period should be moderate for students to achieve. Students are disengaged in the classes when they come to supplementary classes against their will, and the content is above their level. Environmentally, parental indifference is translated into student’s indifference to the study. A rushing environment to cover too many units of materials makes them frustrated moving on without grasping what’s being taught. In conclusion, a careful understanding about managing time, learning environment, teaching materials and rapport formation between students and teachers are found to be necessary in the underachieving elementary school student's English education.

        This study aimed to identify the continuity between 6th grade elementary school English textbooks and 1st grade middle school English textbooks using Coh-Meu'ix, an automated web-based program designed to analyze and calculate the coherence oftexts on a wide range of measures. The measured value of text types was compared and classified into the surface linguistic features (the basic count, word rrequency, readabi li ty, connective information, pronoun information, word information) and the deep linguistic features (co-referential cohesion and semantic cohesion, lexical diversity, syntactic complexity). The findings were as follows: First, the basic counts and words before the main verb had a significant different value between two levels of textbooks. The results were remarkably different in the written language. Second, FKGL (Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level) and the pronoun ratio were significantly different only in the written language. In addition, type-token ratios in written language showed more significant differences than spoken language. Third, other language features showed only a mild and gradual difference. Finally, the resu lt indicated there were no statistical differences of discourse aspects.

        The purpose of this study is to inspect the possibility of changing teacher-centered language learning into learner-centered one emphasizing learner’s interaction with self-directed learning contents available on-line for high school students. This study is to develop onㆍoff blended contents and apply them into classroom environment. It also discusses the kind of contents teachers and learners want to use. Reading parts for each lesson are usually dealt for three class hours in high schools. So it is designed that the first and the third period are done through off-line classroom and the second, on-line. Well-linked with the first and third period, on-line contents for the second period were designed, developed and applied into educational environment. More than expected number of teachers and learners were pleased with on-line contents reaching 80~90% of high level in satisfaction and also showed 65% reaching learners’ interaction rate in off-line classroom. If on?off blended learning model is well structured based on enough researches, it will realize its strong potential as a desirable learning model for reading.

        The purpose of this study was to determine the most effective method of forming cooperative small groups for middle school English classes using ICT. To achieve this goal, the two experimental classes composed of 73 middle school 2nd graders were taught in a task-based teaching-learning model using ICT for 12 weeks. Throughout the 12-week period, two types of grouping models were applied to the students: Experimental class A consisted of differentiated heterogeneous group based on the regular English examination marks, and experimental class B was made up of a differentiated heterogeneous group based on the ICT skill standard for student (ISSS). The study discovered the small group based on the ISSS showed significantly different statistical results in the cognitive, affective and information-using skills. The ISSS could be used as an additional criterion in forming small groups for middle school English classes. In fact, the study shows that it creates better results than the traditional grouping based on learners' English grades if the lessons are given in using ICT.

        본 연구의 목적은 개별적으로 이루어진 형태초점 기법 적용 연구들을 메타분석의 방법을 통하여 종합적으로 살펴보고, 암시적 형태초점 기법과 명시적 형태초점 기법의 효과성을 알아보는 데에 있다. 이를 위해 형태초점 기법의 적용을 독립변인으로 하는 59개의 학술지 논문을 대상으로 메타분석을 실시하였다. 각 연구는 학습자 나이, 처치 기간 및 기능, 어휘, 문법의 종속변인별로 구분하여 효과크기를 분석하였다. 분석 결과 암시적 형태초점 기법의 경우 0.612, 명시적 형태초점 기법의 경우 0.634의 효과크기를 보이며, 두 지도 방법 모두 중간 이상의 효과를 가지는 것을 알 수 있었다. 학습자 나이 및 처치 기간 따른 효과크기는 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 없었으나 명시적 형태초점 기법을 활용한 문법 지도는 언어 기능 지도에 비해 통계적으로 유의미한 수준에서 효과가 큰 것으로 나타났다.

        본 연구에서는 담화표지어의 사용과 관련하여 아시아권 비원어민 영어화자와 미국인 화자 사이의 차이를 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 아시아권 비원어민 영어화자의 대화를 담은 음성코퍼스에 사용된 담화표지어 well의 위치와 기능을 살펴보고 그 결과를 원어민 영어 화자를 대상으로 한 선행연구와 비교하여 사용 양상의 차이를 조사하였다. 조사된 결과를 살펴보면 아시아권 화자에게서 나타나는 특징은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 아시아권 화자는 담화표지어 well을 yeah, mhm, oh, OK 뒤에서 고빈도로 사용하였고, 담화표지어 well의 앞과 뒤에 상대적으로 잦은 쉼(pause)을 사용하였다. 둘째, 담화표지어 well의 구조적 기능을 고빈도로 사용하였지만, 상호작용적 기능은 다양하게 사용하지 못하였다. 아시아권 화자에게서 나타나는 담화표지어 well의 독특한 위치와 제한적인 상호작용적 기능 사용이 아시아권 화자 간에는 자연스럽게 수용되며 대화의 끊김이나 장애 요소가 되지 않았지만, 잦은 말차례 지연(delay), 잦은 쉼(pause)의 경우 원어민과의 소통에서는 부정적으로 작용할 수 있음을 함의하였다.
