A new Gentiana spp. cultivar ‘Skyhope’ was bred by crossing between ‘Jinbu-4 line’ with violet blue (VB 95B) colored petals and ‘Jinbu-1 line’ with violet blue (VB 93B) petals in 2000 year. The superior line of ‘0013-9’ was selected in Daegwallyeong from 2001 to 2003 year, and growth and flower characterization were conducted from 2004 to 2007 year in field of Daegwallyeong and Jinbu of Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do, Namwon, Jeollabuk-do and Jeju Special Self-Governing-do. The flower showed violet blue (VB 96A) color at opening, the petal of flower have not spot and flower stem color was purple. Flowers was opening at the same time from bottom to upside. Plant height was 68.1 cm, and number of flower stems per plant was 5.3 ea., number of flower node per stem is 5.9 ea., and Number of flowers per stem was 32.2 ea.. The flowering of ‘Skyhope’ cultivar was bloomed from the middle of July in Daegwallyeong and the later of July in Jinbu, Pyeongchang, Kangwon-do and the early of July in Namwon, Jeollabuk-do and the later of July in Jeju Special Self-Governing-do. ‘Skyhope’ cultivar can be used for cut flower.

The superior line of 00-168-3 was selected in Daegwallyeong from 2001 to 2003 year, and its growth and flower characterization were conducted from 2004 to 2007 year in field of Daegwallyeong and Jinbu, Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do, Namwon, Jeollabuk-do and Jeju Special Self-Governing-do. The flower showed violet blue (VB 96C) color at opening, the petal of flower had not spot and flower stem color was purple. The flowers were bloomed at the same time from bottom to upside (Table 1). Plant height was 62.9 ㎝ , number of flower stem per plant is 8.3, number of flower node per stem was 5.3, and number of flower per stem was 21.7 (Table 2). The flowering of ‘Skyblueball’ was bloomed from July 26 in Daegwallyeong, August 3 in Jinbu and Namwon, and June 28 in Jeju Special Self-Governing-do. ‘Skyblueball’ cultivar can be used for cut flower.

A new red leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) cultivar, “Jangsu” which has late bolting and good red expression leaf color was developed from a cross of “Yeolpungcheokchima” (late bolting and high yield) and “Seoulyakchima” (dark red color). The selection and breeding of advanced lines were done by pedigree method during 2000-2004. The advanced lines were evaluated for yield and adaptability in Korea (Gangwon, Kyunggi, Chungbuk, Kyungnam, Jeonnam, Jeonbuk, and Jeju) from 2005 to 2006. The “Jangsu” has gray seed color and elliptic thick leaves. Compared to “Yeolpungcheokchima”, marketable yield of “Jangsu” was lower by 10% (at 469 g per plant), but with particularly improved good expression of red leaf color in high temperature cultivation in the field. The shelf-life of “Jangsu” was three weeks longer than “Yeolpungcheokchima” at 4℃. The amount of bitter sesquiterpene lactones (BSL) and sugar content of “Jangsu” were similar with “Yeolpungcheokchima” at 46 ㎍/g and 4.8 brix, respectively, but taste is better, more crispy, and sweeter than “Yeolpungcheokchima”.
