In terms of aphid species identification, both host plant association and morphological characteristics are crucial factors. However, aphids in the genus Aphis Linnaeus (Hemiptera: Aphididae) often are cryptic in morphology due to their rapid radiation. Moreover, overlapping host plant species can make difficult situation worse. Three cryptic species Aphis gossypii Glover, Aphis glycines Matsumura, and Aphis rhamnicola sp. nov. occur together on the Buckthorn, Rhamnus spp. in the overwintering season in Korea. Due to lacking informative morphological characters and host plant sharing, the new species recently has been recognized as a distinct species. In this study, A. rhamnicola sp. nov. on various host plants was compared with the primary host sharing species, A. gossypii and A. glycines, based on morphological and molecular characteristics. In the results, there were significant genetic differences between three species, despite the high similarities in morphology. Our results provide strong evidence for establishing new species, which seems to be a typical heteroecious species that alternates between only primary host, Rhamnus spp., and various secondary hosts. We describe a new species, A. rhamnicola sp. nov., for apterous and alate vivipara, fundatrix, ovipara, and gynopara, including diagnostic key for host sharing species in genus Aphis.

Sorolopha Lower, 1901 is one of the largest genera belongs to the tribe Olethreutini in the subfamily Olethreutinae Obraztsov, 1946. This genus is distributed throughout the world, including 64 described species (Brown 2005; Horak 2006). Among them, 60 species are distributed mainly in the Oriental Region. Besides, the genus was also recorded from Australian Region (6 species) and Palaearctic Region (2 species). Characteristics of genus Sorolopha are very close to those of Eudemis (Diakonoff 1973). Sorolopha species in Vietnam have been reviewed by Kuznetzov (1988, 2000 & 2003) and Razowski (2009). In 1998, Kuznetzov recorded one new species, S. ghilarovi Kuznetzov in a study on Lepidoptera fauna from the Northern part of Vietnam, and he (2000) also recorded 9 species from the country based on the collection of Zoological Institute, St. Petersburg. Moreover, a new species S. asymmetrana Kuznetzov was described in 2003. Most recently, Razowski (2009) reported 4 known species such as, S. herbifera (Meyrick, 1909); S. sphaerocopa (Meyrick, 1930); S. satoi Kawabe, 1989; S. chiangmaiensis Kawabe, 1989. He also described two species as new to science, S. brunnorbis Razowski and S. dorsichlora Razowski from the collection of the Berlin museum. In this study, a total of 10 species have hitherto been recorded from the Northern part of Vietnam including one new species, S. cucphuongensis sp. nov.. The new species is very similar to S. phyllochlora Meyrick but it can be separated by different characters of wing pattern and socius of male genitalia. The materials for identification are based on the collection of University of Incheon.

Corythucha marmorata (Uhler, 1878), the chrysanthemum lace bug, originally distributes throughout North America. It feeds on plants in the family Asteraceae. In south central New York, it has been known as a common herbivore of Solidago spp. and Aster spp., especially Solidago altissima and Aster novae-angliae. Since the first founding of the lace bug in the western Japan (Hyogo) in 1999, it has rapidly expanded to other areas and sometimes damaged to agricultural crops such as chrysanthemum and sweet potato. In July 2012, we found the lace bug at Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, in Korea for the first time. Interestingly Aster pilosus Wild., an American exotic plant, was heavily infested with a lot of adults and nymphs of the lace bug at roadside. Subsequent survey indicates that it distributes widely in the central Korea, inhabiting a few wild plants including Erigeron annuus (L.) and Conyza canadensis (L.). In this report, we provide its morphological and molecular characteristics, distribution, host plants, and possible importance as an agricultural pest in Korea.

This study treated the list and key to the 8 species of the subfamily Typhlodrominae from Korea including a newly recorded species, T. coryli Wu and Lan, 1991. This subfamily comprises four genera: Kuzinellus Wainstein, Paraseiulus Muma, Galendromus Muma, Typhlodromus Scheuten. Key characters of the genera in Typhlodrominae have been well known as the number and position of the dorsal setae. Therefore, Typhlodrominae was previously referred to one genus, Typhlodromus in Korea. However, the nominal species in the Phytoseiidae has increased in number exponentially more than 2,280 in the world today, so the current classification of the family is taken more genera by other characters, not only dorsal chaetotaxy but also the setation and the nature of the posterior margin of the sternal shield, the shape and setation of the ventrianal shield, setation of legs I-IV and the relative lengths of the setae Z4 and Z5. Thus, Korean Typhlodrominae includes four genera, Kuzinellus Wainstein, Paraseiulus Muma, Galendromus Muma and Typhlodromus Scheuten.

In the process of revising the tachinid genus Linnaemya Robineau-Desvoidy in Korea, we have discovered two species for the first time in Korea. They closely resemble each other and need to be identified with caution. We here provide detailed redescriptions and illustrations with their diagnostic characters indicated. L. atriventris can be distinguished from L. hirtipennis by the combination of the following characteristics: 1) abdomen black in ground color; 2) wing vein R1 without setulose; 3) hypandrium without secondary posterior lobe; 4) male with antero-basal 1/3 of flagellomere I distinctly swollen; and 5) postgonite very weakly curved dorsally.

Dendrothripine thrips are distinguished from other members of Thripidae by a remarkably elongate, “lyre-shaped” metasternal endofurca. This furca extends to the mesothorax as a pair of sinusoidal curved spurs, providing the insertion points for powerful muscles arising from the hind legs of the salatatorial thrips. The subfamily Dendrothripinae, formerly known for a long time as the tribe Dendrothripini since Priesner (1925), was up-ranked to subfamily level of Thripidae by Bhatti (1989). Of the 97 species in 15 genera known worldwide, Dendrothrips minowai Priesner, 1935 and Pseudodendrothrips mori (Niwa, 1908) have been hitherto reported from Korea. In this study of the Korean Dendrothripinae, two species of genus Dendrothrips, D. ornatus (Jablonowski, 1894) and D. magnoliae Kudo, 1984, are found for the first time. However, D. minowai Priesner recorded by Woo (1974), is excluded from the Korean fauna because of misidentification as supposed by Kudo (1984). Morphological characters for identification of three species including P. mori previously recorded are described and figured with a key to Korean species of Dendrothripinae.

Bae et al. (2008) made a illustrated catalogue of the family Pyralidae in Korea, including 349 known species up to date. During the survey of the lepidopterous insects in Jeju island, we found two unrecorded species, Daulia afralis Walker and Herpetogramma cynaralis Walker, from Korea. In this study, we report the two newly recorded species with illustration of adult and genitalia, including available information on distributional range and synonymy. The material examined is now deposited in the Natural History Museum, Hannam University. The genitalia of the species were mounted in Euparal media and photographed with a AxioCam MRc 5 digital camera attached to a Carl Zeiss microscope, with an Axio Imager A1. The color standard for the re-description of adults was based on the Methuen Handbook of Colour.

Tetranychid mites are one of the most diverse group including at least 1,200 species in the world. Species identification is difficult due to the small size and similar morphology within the group. We collected 17 species of spider mites from various host plants in different regions of Korea and determined species identity by the comparison of morphological characters and nucleotide sequences of internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) and the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI). In addition, we report three new species that were firstly identified in Korea. Amphitetranychus quercivorus (Ehara and Gotoh) was collected from Mongolian oak plant in Daegu, Schizotetranychus miscanthi Saito was from the common reed plant in Ulleungdo, and S. cercidiphylli Ehara was from Bamboo plant in Jeju. Morphological identification of three species were similar with those of Japanese samples, but the ITS2 and COI sequences of A. quercivorus and the COI sequence of S. miscanthi were different with Japanese species at the rates of 1/419, 2/331 and 3/332 nucleotides, repsectively. S. cercidiphylli can be identified by the aedeagus shape of males but we firstly sequenced ITS2 and COI of this species. Our results can be used for the identification of spider mites which are important in plant quarantine.

The genus Gonioctena Chevrolat is distributed in the Holarctic and Oriental regions, with more than 80 species. Many species of the genus have great similarity in external morphology and coloration, often cause misidentifications. Thus, the shape of the aedeagus is mainly used to distinguish closely related species. Fifty-four species, more than half of the known taxa, occur in northeastern Asia, including 18 species in the Russian Far East, 29 in China, 11 in Korea, and 18 in Japan. Among these, G. gracilicornis Kraatz (type locality: Amur) is widely distributed in Russia, China, Mongolia and Korea. However, extensive investigation on Gonioctena in Korea revealed that the Korean population of G. gracilicornis differs from that of the Russian by the coloration, the puncturation of pronotum, and the shape of aedeagus. The purpose of this study is to describe a new species of Gonioctena that was previously misidentified as G. gracilicornis. A key to Korean Gonioctena, distribution, and host plant are also provided.
