The interface area of the face sheet and core of the sandwich composite is seen as a weakness due to its low de-bonding toughness. To overcome this concern, it is critical to develop a suitable modification strategy to enhance the de-bonding toughness of the face sheet/core interface. In the present study, the corrugated core reinforced sandwich composite was prepared through co-curing and secondary bonding approaches. The MWCNTs reinforced adhesive was induced in the face sheet/core interface in different weight concentrations. The MWCNT-reinforced adhesive was prepared using the sonication technique, and its dispersion was examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The three-point bending test revealed that sandwich composite prepared using the co-cure method has higher flexural strength than secondary bonded samples due to better bonding face sheet and corrugated core. Compared with MWCNT-free corrugated core reinforced co-cured sandwich composites (CCSC), the flexural strength of 1 wt.% MWWCNT-induced sandwich composite was increased by 101.28%. The microstructural study showed that secondary bonded samples had extensive fibre breakage at the face plate due to early de-bonding of the face sheet and corrugated core. Furthermore, the free vibrational analysis was performed to evaluate the natural frequency and damping values of the corrugated core reinforced sandwich composite. The modal test results indicated that inducing 1wt.% MWCNTs in the face sheet/core interface had enhanced the natural frequencies of co-cured sandwich composites. The present study provides a suitable method to address the weaker de-bonding toughness concerns of face sheet/core interface region of sandwich structures.

Composite laminates are used in a wide range of applications including defense, automotive, aviation and aerospace, marine, wind energy, and recreational sporting goods. These composite beams still exhibit problems such as buckling, local deformations, and interlaminar delamination. To overcome these drawbacks, a novel viscoelastic autoclave bonding with tapered epoxy reinforcement polyurethane films is proposed. In existing laminates, compression face wrinkling and interlaminar delamination is caused in the sandwich beam. The unique viscoelastic autoclave spunbond interlayer bonding is designed to prevent face wrinkling and absorb and distribute stresses induced by external loads, thereby eliminating interlaminar delamination in the sandwich beam. Also, the existing special reinforcement causes stress concentrations, and the core is not effectively connected, which directly affects the stiffness of the beam. To address this, a novel tapered epoxy polyurethane reinforcement adhesive film is proposed, whose reinforcement thickness gradually tapers as it enters the core material. This minimizes stress concentrations at the interface, preventing excessive adhesive squeeze-out during the bonding process, and improves the stiffness of the beam. Results indicate the proposed model avoids the formation of micro cracks, interlaminar delamination, buckling, and local deformations, and effectively improves the stiffness of the beam.

Liquid phase exfoliation of natural graphite is an industrially effective solution for graphene preparation. However, many countries have identified natural graphite as a strategic resource and restricted its mining. In this report, we used abundant and readily available needle coke (NC) as a graphene exfoliation precursor and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as a dispersant to prepare a sandwich structured conductive graphitized NC nanosheets (GNCNs) by liquid phase exfoliation, freeze-drying and high-temperature graphitization, in which a graphene layer is sandwiched between two thin CMC layers. CMC could increase the liquid absorption and retention ability of the conductive agent and improve the migration rate of lithium ions. The highly ordered graphene layer could accelerate the transmission of electrons. The GNCNs with 0.4 wt% CMC addition showed good rate performance (144.6 mAh g− 1 at 5 C) and high cycle stability (96.2% after 200 cycles at 1 C) for LiFePO4 (LFP) battery. The traditional Super-P (SP) conductive agent exhibited low-rate performance (113.9 mAh g− 1 at 5 C) and cycle performance (89.9% after 200 cycles at 1 C). This study offers a novel approach to selecting graphene precursors and has promising applications for conductive additives in high-performance LFP batteries.

Damping and sound absorption not only reduce environmental pollution caused by vibration and noise, but also improves processing accuracy, resolution of precision measuring instruments and fatigue life of machine parts in various precision machines. The vibration-damping plate is largely divided into a constrained type in which the resin is confined by a plate and a non-constrained type in which a plate is made of a polymer material mainly composed of polymer. The external vibration energy is absorbed by the thermal energy required for friction, stretching and compression of resin, so that the noise and vibration generated by resonance are reduced. The vibration damping ability of the sandwich plate produced in this study was found to be somewhat superior, which may be due to the difference in adhesive force during the manufacture of the sandwich plate. In the experimental results, it was confirmed that the sandwich plate material is superior to the vibration damping ability than the 5182 aluminum single plate material, it can be seen that the sandwich plate is effective for vibration damping of the aluminum alloy plate material.

An aluminium sandwich sheet is the composite adhered by rolling two aluminum panels to one plastic core. If it has the same bending stiffness as an steel sheets, it is about 65% lighter than steel sheet and 30% lighter than aluminum sheet. In present study, we intend to develop application technologies of an aluminum sandwich sheet for auto body panels from selecting composed materials of aluminium sandwich sheets to fabricating prototype. For this study, for the application of a light sandwich sheet to an automotive hood part, ribbing process so called, hemming for which joined between an inner and an outer panel was introduced. From these results, it was found that the sandwich sheet could improve the weight and maintain the flexural rigidity simultaneously comparing to the steel sheet.

To fabricate the 5182 aluminum-polymer sandwich panels, the strength of 5182 aluminum panels, which are the skin sheets that constitutes the sandwich composite panels, is changed according to the degree of heat treatment after rolling, and the characteristics of sandwich panel are also changed. In addition, in the stress-strain curves of the sandwich panel, the serration behavior observed in the 5182 aluminum alloy sheet is also observed. This serration behavior causes surface roughness during sheet forming, which is a serious problem in application to automotive body sheet. In this study, the tensile properties of the 5182 aluminum sandwich panels at room and elevated temperature were carefully investigated by tensile test. It can be found that when the aluminum surface sheets having insufficient heat treatment time is applied, the serration behavior does not completely disappear from the temperature of the room temperature to 160℃.

Impact damage tolerance is an important design requirement for composite structures. In this study, the effect of post impact damage and hole size of the composite sandwich skin / sandwich with core specimen on compressive strength of the laminate was analyzed. Three specimen tests were performed in this research. Two tests were carried out on pure bending test specimens subjected to impact damage to the skin and specimen with a hole in one of its skin as a damage. Through this test, we compared the reduction of compressive strength due to the size of skin damage and the size of the hole. Also, core-free specimen with an open hole under uniaxial loading were tested to produce reference data for comparison with the series tested earlier. As results of the tests, the sandwich beams with damage size and open hole are almost identical, and we concluded that the prediction of compressive strength reduction after impact of the sandwich skin structure can be predicted using an analytical model assuming skin open hole as impact inputs.

Three-dimensional motion analysis systems and force plates are used for gait phase detection and ground reaction force(GRF) or ground reaction moment(GRM) data collection. But force plates as measurement systems are restricted to laboratory environments and have limitations for abnormal walking with foot dragging. Therefore the methods were proposed to compute the GRM from the kinematic data of three-dimensional motion analysis systems. Gait phase detection with kinematic data using foot velocity algorithm(FVA) was performed. The validity of gait phase detection was obtained comparing with the results of force plates. A gait model with 7 segments was composed to compute GRM. The results of gait model with kinematic data were compared with those of force plates. The result of the vertical direction is similar. But anterior-posterior direction and lateral direction show similar tendency with some gaps.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate to the practicing engineers, how to apply the advanced composite materials theory to the slab bridges. For general construction material used, there is certain theoretical limit in sizes. For super slab bridges construction, the reduction in panel weight is the first step to take in order to break such size limits. For a typical slab bridges panel, both concrete and advanced composite sandwich panels are considered. The concrete panel is treated as a special orthotropic plate. Advanced composite sandwich panels are considered as a self-weights less than one tenth of that of concrete panel, with deflections less than that of the concrete panel. This conclusion gives good guide line for design of the light weight of slab bridges.
