본 논문은 민간회화로서 민화의 가치를 인문학적 관점에서 성찰하고자 하는 것이다. 그 동안 민화에 관한 연구는 무명(無名)의 작가에 의해 제작된 ‘생활화’라는 이유로 미술사 안에서 연구가 부진했었다. 이러한 연유로 연구자마다 민화의 개념과 특성을 조금씩 다르게 설정하기도 한다. 이 같은 여건에서 본 논문에서는 민화의 주요한 특성을 민간회화로서 민화만이 갖는 가치가 있다고 보고 이를 주제로 설정한 후, 통속세계의 보편성을 중심으로 살펴보고자 한다. 민화가 유행할 시기에 중국에서는 민간 연화가 성행하였으며, 다른 동아시아에서도 민간회화가 부흥한 측면이 있다. 여기서는 우리 민화와 가장 연관성이 짙은 중국의 민간연화와의 비교분석을 통해 민화가 지닌 민간회화로서의 미적 특수성을 찾고자 한다. 민간연화는 우리의 문배(門排)에 해당하는 문신(門神)에 기원을 두고 있으며, 그림의 도상이나 내용적 측면에서 여러 비슷한 점을 공유하고 있다. 특히 생산자와 향유자가 같은 층에서 이루어졌기 때문에 민간의 사상이나 감성이 집약되어 있는 예술이라는 공통점이 있다. 이것은 문화를 독점했던 계층이 다 수의 대중으로 이동했다는 것을 알려준 것이며, 통속적인 그림의 예술성을 인 정한 최초의 사례라고 할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 민화가 최초의 대중예술로 서 가치가 있으며, 이것은 민화의 본질일 이해하는데 매우 중요한 요소라는 점을 말하고자 한다.

본 연구는 20세기 후반의 작곡가가 생각하는 전통적인 오라토리오 양식 활용의 의미를 찾아 보려는 목적으로 헨체의 유일한 오라토리오 《메두사호(號)의 뗏목》(1968)을 구체적으로 살펴본 것이다. 이 작품은 1816년에 실제 일어난 프랑스의 호위함 메두사(Méduse)의 난파 사건을 소재로 했고 솔로, 혼성합창단, 관현악이 함께하는 전통 오라토리오 양식과 유사한 구성의 세속 오라토리오이다. 헨체는 인간의 삶을 향한 순수하고 강한 의지를 이야기하는 소재 선택과 인간에 대한 존중 과 도덕성을 노래한 전통 오라토리오의 장르 미학을 연결하고 악곡 구성의 기초로 삼았다. 그리고 상징적인 등장인물을 설정하고, 적절한 시각적인 무대와 극적인 움직임의 요소를 도입했으며 이야기 속 인물들과 그들의 상황에 대해 공감하는 오케스트라의 역할을 강조함으로써 20세기 후반의 음악에서 확실하게 드러나는 작곡가의 개별성을 담았다. 사회 참여적인 작곡가로 변화하며 자신의 새로운 예술 철학을 담기 시작한 작품이기도 한 헨체의 《메두사호(號)의 뗏목》은 종교적인 내용이 중심 주제인 오라토리오 장르가 세속적인 내용 을 담아서도 그 예술성을 계속 이어갈 수 있다는 것을 분명하게 했다. 또한, 작곡 경향의 자유로움이 무한한 20세기 후반에도 전통적인 장르 양식 활용이 작품을 창의적으로 전개하는데 원동력이 될 수 있다는 것을 확실하게 보여주었다.

본고는 근세로 이행하는 시기의 이탈리아에서 제작되었던 예술작품들이 단순히 예술적 의도로만 제작되지 않았음을 밝힌다. 15세기 후반 무렵, 피렌체의 예술이 볼로냐로 퍼져나가 어떻게 반 응하였는지를 살피고, 볼로냐를 통치한 조반니 벤티볼리오 2세가 주도한 도시 프로젝트를 통해 그 가 활용했던 황제의 이미지가 공공장소에서 주는 효과, 그리고 사적인 공간인 개인 예배당에서 그의 교양이 예술 속에서 어떠한 정치적 메시지를 던지는 지를 분석한다. 정치사상가로서의 단테의 『제정론』에 근거해 조반니 2세가 추구하려 했던 정치적 이상향을 밝히고 나아가 군주로서의 조반 니 2세의 풍부한 이미지 창출 능력을 재평가하여 북부 이탈리아의 르네상스 예술에 대한 관심을 불러일으키는데 그 의의를 둔다.

스티픈 밀러의 『일요일의 특이한 이력』은 대서양 양안의 영어 사용 저술가 들의 일요일에 관한 다양한 생각을 살피는 책이다. 그들 중에는 목사, 화가, 소 설가, 시인, 철학자, 비평가 등이 포함된다. 밀러는 기독교인들을 대강 세 그룹 즉 준수자들, 실천하지 않는 자들, 타락한 자들로 나누었다. 준수자들에게 일요 일은 성일이며, 또 다른 이들에게 일요일은 성일이자 휴일이다. 일요일을 성일 로 아는 사람들은 보통 엄격한 일요일 준수로 몰아가는 안식일 준수자라 불린 다. 안식일 준수 가정에서 자란 작가들은 대개 우울한 일요일을 지냈으며 그들 은 어린 시절의 경험에 대하여 부정적으로 반응하였다. 일요일에 관한 논쟁들은 종교개혁 이후 역사를 통하여 성과 속 두 축 사이에서 우왕좌왕하는 흐름을 이 루어 온 것으로 보인다. 현재 철저한 안식일 준수 강조의 힘이 약하지만, 곧 강 한 힘으로 돌아올 수 있을 것이다. 밀러의 책은 많은 자료를 섭렵하였다. 매우 흥미롭고 지식이 풍부한 책이지만 가끔 산만한 것이 흠이다.

에드나 오브라이언(Edna O’Brien)은 금세기 이전에는 저평가된 작가이 다. 우리나라에서는 오브라이언뿐만 아니라, 제임스 조이스(James Joyce) 이후의 아일 랜드 작가들은 심도 있는 비평적 주목을 받지 못하고 있다. 이멜다 수녀 (“Sister Imelda”)에서 오브라이언은 이멜다 수녀의 세속적 욕망을 교묘하게 숨기고 있다. 독자 는 탐정소설을 읽고 있는 것처럼 이야기 속에 감추어진 욕망을 파헤쳐야 한다. 오브라 이언은 남성중심 사회에서 정해진 성역할을 강요하는 이성애적 관계에 대해 화자가 회의적인 시각을 드러내게 하면서 동성애적 욕망을 정당시 한다.

Christian Education and theological education in the secular age has to change their traditional framework. Theological Education which regards and addresses secularization as a negative phenomenon cannot properly serve the contemporary pluralistic society. The traditional understanding of both Christian Education and Theological Education is that they serve as the “light“ of world. The traditional position of theological education in the West is that education should serve as a light that brightens the dark world with the Christian spirit. Theology was considered the most superior discipline which lit the world from its ivory tower. There is the position of Christian and Theological Education as the “salt“ which purifies the secular things of the world as well as the secular aspects which have penetrated Christianity through the process of secularization. This is the position maintained by the school of fundamental Christian and Theological Education which is against secularization. The problem of this position is that, according to the dualistic world-view, the church is not willing to go into the world but attempts to purify the world and bring it into the church. Thus it does not complete the secularization of Jesus Christ who was incarnated to come and serve the world. As such, Christian Education and Theological Education has to play the role of “leaven“ in the world just as the Church has to be the leaven of the world. Education should be like leaven which spreads the Christian spirit and the Gospel by changing the world in the pluralistic fields of mission of the secular age. For this kind of education, Christian Education and Theological Education need to become concrete and practical to befit contemporary pluralism, and further to be changed into mission-oriented education. In this sense, I would like to propose the reform of Theological Education focusing on practical Biblical Theology, practical Church History, practical Systematic theology and missional Practical Theology.

This study focuses on some evangelism models to reach secular people. John Wesley’s “ Order of Salvation" model, James Engel’s “ Count Down" model, Agnes Liu ’ S “ Triangle" model, George Hunter's “ Target" model, and Joseph Aldrich’s “ Relationship" model are reviewed. John Wesley’s “ Order of Salvation" model is effective in understanding how secular people become Christians. Further, it is also effective in conserving the new converts. Its small group dynamics can be contextualized in different cultures. James Engel’s “Count Down" model is effective in understanding how secular people become Christians in terms of spiritual maturity However, it overlooks the multi dimensions of how people become Christians. Agnes Riu’s “ Triangle" model is an effective way to understand the several dimensions of how secular people become Christians. It is better than James Engel’s model in this regard. However, it shows an extremely simplified conversion process. George Hunter’ s “ Target" model is an effective way to understand how secular people become Christians, also. It is an extended form of John Wesley’s “ Order of Salvation" model. It takes the c비tural gap into a serious consideration Joseph Aldrich’ s “ Life- Style Evangelism" is based on inter personal relationships. As the early church employed this model, so too modern evangelism needs to apply it to reach secular people effectively. Some evange1ism models are more effective than others according to different cultural contexts. So some models needs to be contextualized in different cultures to be effective. The Lord wants a greater harvest.

Owing to several observational evidences and theoretical predictions for morphological evolution of galaxies, it is now widely accepted that galaxies do evolve from late types to early ones along the Hubble sequence. It is also well established that non-axisymmetric potentials of bar-like or oval mass distributions can change the morphology of galaxies significantly during the Hubble time. Here, we review the observational and theoretical grounds of the secular evolution driven by bar-like potentials, and present the results of SPH simulations for the response of the gaseous disks to the imposed potentials to explore the secular evolution in the central regions of barred galaxies.

It is now a well established fact that galaxies undergo significant morphological transformation during their lifetimes, manifesting as an evolution along the Hubble sequence from the late to the early Hubble types. The physical processes commonly believed to be responsible for this observed evolution trend, i.e. the major and minor mergers, as well as gas accretion under a barred potential, though demonstrated applicability to selected types of galaxies, on the whole have failed to reproduce the most important statistical and internal properties of galaxies. The secular evolution mechanism reviewed in this paper has the potential to overcome most of the known difficulties of the existing theories to provide a natural and coherent explanation of the properties of present day as well as high-redshift galaxies.

We have studied the long-term X-ray light curve (2-10 keV) of the luminous Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG-2-58-22 by compiling data, from various X-ray satellites, which together cover more than 20 years. We have found two distinct types of time variations in the light curve. One is a gradual and secular decrease of the X-ray flux, and the other is the episodic increase of X-ray flux (or flare) by a factor of 2-4 compared with the level expected from the secular variation. We detected 3 such flares in total; a representative duration for the flares is ~2 years, with intervening quiescent intervals lasting ~6-8 years. We discuss a few possible origins for these variabilities. Though a standard disk instability theory may explain the displayed time variability in the X-ray light curve, the subsequent accretions of stellar debris, from a tidal disruption event caused by a supermassive black hole in MCG-2-58-22, cannot be ruled out as an alternative explanation.

We analyzed the luminosity profiles of 104 bright barred galaxies to examine the frequency of occurrence of the Type II disk which is thought to be the result of redistribution of disk material by bar potential. Our analysis of the elliptically averaged major axis profiles shows that about 70% of the present sample seem to have Type II disks with a weak tendency of preferential occurrence of type II disks in the late type galaxies. there is a subgroup of Type II disks which is characterized by a flat luminosity distribution in the middle disk, followed by a steep decline in the outer parts. Most of the galaxies with strong bars tend to have Type II disks. The present study strongly suggests that Type II disk is an evidence for the secular evolutions in disk galaxies.

The secular and seasonal variations of visibility of 24 cities in Korea are studied statistically from 1973 to 1986. The geographical distributions of annual change patterns of visibility are also studied by means of their characteristical variations. The secular variations of visibility show that annual totals of poor visibility($lt;10㎞) days increase significantly, while that of good visibility ($gt;30㎞) days decrease remarkably. Such tendencies are quite reversal to those appearing in several large cities in the U.S.A., England and Japan. Seasonal variations of visibility can be classified into three types : type A) The visibility is maximum in winter and minimum in summer, type B) The visibility is maximum in spring and fall, minimum in summer and winter, type C) The visibility is maximum in spring and fall, minimum is summer. Geographical distributions of annual mean visibility show that the poorest visibility appears in the Kyunggi inland region(mean 15㎞), while the best visibility occurs in mountainous north Kangwon-do and Cheju island(over 25㎞).

영일만 해역에서 표면수온의 주기적 변화와 표면수온과 기온의 관계에서 얻은 결과는 다음과 같다. 영일만 해역(포항과 장기갑)에서 1962년 1월부터 1981년 12월까지 평균표면 수온이 높은 달은 10월과 11월뿐이다. 영일만 해역의 표면수온 주기적 변화는 쓰시마난류의 변화와 밀접한 관계를 갖는 다고 사료된다. 영일만에 장기갑의 누년 평균표면수온은 15℃이고, 포항항에서는 14.6℃였다.

인간의 삶에는 항상 성스러운 것과 세속적인 요소가 상존해왔다. 엘 리엇의 작품에도 그러한 성스러운 것과 세속적인 요소는 매우 흥미롭게 뒤섞여 나타난다. 엘리엇의 변동이 심했던 종교적인 배경은 별개로, 엘 리엇은 고전문학의 유산을 충실하게 흡수했던 작가였다. 물론, 그 전통 을 있는 그대로 받아들이지는 않았지만, 고전으로부터 그가 받았던 영 향을 고려한다면, 엘리엇은 고전을 호위하고 유지하려는 작가가 분명하 다. 하지만 동시에 그는 모더니즘을 형성하는 매우 혁신적인 인물이기 도 했다. 그렇기 때문에 그의 작품 속에는 매우 상반된 요소들이 공존 하고 있는 것으로 보인다. 한편으로 그의 작품들은 매우 종교적이고, 철 학적이지만, 또 다른 한편으로 황무지와 J. 알프레드 프루프록의 연 가 와 같은 그의 작품 속에는 다양한 대중적인 요소들이 함께 공존한 다. 다시 말해, 가장 성스럽게 다루어지는 성경과 같은 텍스트가 아주 저속한 요소들과 병치되어 나타난다는 것이다. 이러한 성스러운 요소와 세속적인 요소의 공존에 대한 인식은 엘리엇 작품의 이해뿐만 아니라, 엘리엇의 개인적인 삶에 대한 해석의 관점도 함께 제시해 줄 것으로 여 겨진다.

이 글은 바흐의 세속칸타타를 담론의 중심으로 끌어들이려는 노력의 일환으로 기획된 것 이다. 이를 위해 이 글은 1733년을 주목한다. 바흐담론에서 1733년은 바흐의 《1733년 미 사》가 작곡되고 이것이 드레스덴 궁정에 헌정된 해로 기억되고 있다. 그러나 바흐담론은 이 시기 바흐가 모두 5곡의 세속칸타타를 작곡하였고, 이들 역시 드레스덴 궁정에 헌정되었다 는 사실을 과소평가하고 있다. 이 글이 시도하는 것이 이러한 기존의 시각에서 종교와 세속 의 날선 구분을 잠시 내려놓은 채 이것을 넘어선 바흐의 일상을 재구성하는 일이다. 이는 바 흐의 세속칸타타(또는 그의 《1733년 미사》)를 작곡가의 ‘특별한 과외 활동’으로 간주하지 않고, 그의 음악활동의 일상으로 이해하려는 노력이며 또한, 이것은 드레스덴을 향한 바흐의 동경, 또는 야심이 그의 대표작인 《1733년 미사》뿐 아니라 이 시기 작곡된 그의 세속칸타 타들을 통해서도 일관되게 구현되었다는 것을 말하려는 시도이기도 하다.
