        There has been an increasing demand for effective on-line English teacher education programs due to the advantages including cost efficiency and easy access. Despite the provision of a variety of on-line English teacher education programs, only a small number of studies on on-line in-service education program for English teachers have been carried out. This study aims to provide a basic model of on-line in-service English language teacher education based on the critical awareness. To do this, previous studies on on-line in-service English language teacher education in Korea and abroad were critically reviewed and key issues were derived. They are top-down approach to on-line teacher education curriculum development, unsustainability of teacher education, disconnection of teacher education to practice, insufficient establishment of community of practice, and deficiency of reflection on teaching practice. Three on-line English teacher education programs were selected and evaluated by using these key issues. It is suggested that bottom-up approach to curriculum development, establishment of community of practice for the sustainability of teacher education, and reflective learning for connecting teacher education to real classroom practice be included as key components for effective on-line teacher education.

        본 연구는 보육교사가 업무를 수행함에 있어 직무스트레스와 직무만족도에 미치는 영향과 양자의 관계에 있어서 조직몰입의 매개효과를 검증함으로써 보육교사의 직무스트레스를 경감시키고 직무만족도를 증가시킬 수 있는 실천적 함의를 제시하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 2013년 8월 1일부터 9월 23일까지 J지역에 소재한 사회복지법인 어린이집에 근무하고 있는 보육교사를 대상으로 설문한 자료 총 279부를 분석에 사용하였다. 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위해 SPSS 18.0을 이용해서 다중회귀분석으로 매개효과를 검증한 결과, 보육교사의 직무스트레스는 조직몰입을 통해서 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 연구결과를 바탕으로 보육교사의 직무스트레스를 감소시키고 직무만족도를 증가시킬 수 있는 조직몰입과 관련된 실천적 제언은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 보육서비스 질 향상을 위해서 보육의 주체인 보육교사에 대한 스트레스를 감소와 직무만족을 높일 수 있는 다양한 지원이 필요하다. 둘째, 보육교사들이 조직의 목표와 개인의 목표를 동일시하고 자신의 직무에 몰입할 수 있도록 조직몰입과 관련된 프로그램이 제공되어야 한다. 셋째, 보육교사 자질을 높일 수 있는 다양한 교육시스템이 개발되어져야 할 것이다.

        Task-based language instruction has been increasingly promoted in second language (L2) classrooms under the assumption that it can provide an ultimate condition for L2 learning when combined with form-focused interventions such as teacher corrective feedback (CF). The present research investigated the amount, type, and learner uptake of teacher CF in relation to the following task-related variables: (1) task vs. nontask work, (2) focused vs. unfocused tasks, and (3) open vs. closed tasks. Data were collected from 8 intermediate adult EFL classrooms. It was found that the amount of teacher CF provided during tasks versus nontasks and focused versus unfocused tasks was not significantly different. However, the teachers used different strategies depending on the focus of tasks. The study did not relate the matter of open versus closed tasks to the amount and types of teacher CF. When considering learner uptake, the study found that the teachers tended to offer more uptake opportunities during relatively form-oriented activities, and the learners’ uptake was more successful when they were working in relatively form-oriented activities compared to the cases where they were in meaning-based activities. Learner uptake was not associated with whether or not tasks were open and closed.

        The purpose of this study was to compare weight control behaviour, eating habits, and health-related life habits accordingto degree of obesity among normal, overweight, and obese groups. Self-perception of weight and desire for weight controlin males (p<0.001) and females (p<0.001) varied among the three groups. Reasons (p<0.001), experience (p<0.01), andmethod of weight control (p<0.05) were different among the three female groups, whereas males did not show anydifferences. Intake of nutritional supplements in the male obese group was higher compared to other groups (p<0.01),whereas eating habits were not significantly different among the three groups for both males and females. Food habits scorefor intake of fruits, milk, and yogurt were higher in females than males (p<0.001). Correlation coefficients of food habitsscore and anthropometric measurements showed that hip circumference was negative for intake of fruits in males, whereasRBW and BMI were positive for food combination, intake of bean products, and fishes in females (p<0.05). Frequency andfitting exercise in the obese female group were lower than in the other groups (p<0.01). Therefore, proper nutritionaleducation for obese individuals is recommended proper self-perception of weight, good food habits, and regular exercise.

        The present study explores the relationship between teacher-efficacy and selected teacher variables, such as teachers’ demographic variables, self-efficacy, English proficiency, and teacher training experiences, of Korean English teachers. The study employed four questionnaires including Sherer et al.’s (1982) General Self-Efficacy Scale, Tschannen-Moran and Woolfolk-Hoy’s (2001) Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale, Chacon’s (2002) Self-Reported English Proficiency Scale, and background information. The participants of the study were 120 Korean English teachers. The main findings of the study indicate that the participants’ standardized English proficiency scores exerted no significant influence on their teacher-efficacy. Yet, the teachers’ self-assessed English proficiency levels accounted for a significant amount of additional variance of their teacher-efficacy after controlling the variance explained by their self-efficacy, suggesting the significant impact of teachers’ positive assessment of their own English proficiency on their teacher-efficacy, regardless of their actual English proficiency. The study results also suggest that teachers’ professional training experiences generally contribute to their teacher-efficacy. Discussions and suggestions for future research are provided.

        The purpose of the study is to compare the nature of teacher talk between the native and non-native speaking professors with its focus on language functions and interaction modifications in English-mediated writing instruction. The study analyzed the classroom languages of two professors who were teaching college-level composition courses using the same textbook and syllabus. The classes taught by the two professors were videotaped, transcribed, and analyzed based on the AS-unit. The results showed both professors used all of the five functions in the order of information, suasion, opinion, future plans, and checking. The NS professor, on the other hand, used the information function more often, while the NNS professor relied more on the suasion function. The data also displayed that the NS professor gave more feedback responses, whereas the NNS professor asked more clarification requests and repeated their own utterances. The findings implied that the types and distribution of the teacher talk may be influenced by the subject-matter and the instructional foci of each professor.

        에티오피아는 1994년을 기점으로 교육개혁을 시도하면서 보편적 교육 및 질 높은 교육 의 실현을 위한 기틀을 마련하였다. 특히, 두 목표를 실현하기 위해 1994년 교육개혁은 질 높은 교사의 수급을 위한 교사 양성소의 교육과정 변화 및 임금 인상에 따른 승진제도 마련 등의 유인책을 제도에 포함시켰다. 이러한 유인책에도 불구하고 여전히 에티오피아 내 교사수급은 현저한 문제점으로 지적되고 있으며 특히 질 높은 교사의 이직은 심각한 사 회적 문제로 부각되고 있는 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구는 에티오피아 교사들은 왜 이직을 하려고 하는 지에 대해 분석하고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 에티오피아 교사 승진제도 및 낮 은 임금 구조가 교사의 이직에 영향을 미친다는 결론에 도달한다. 첫째, 불투명한 승진구 도는 교사의 이직과 관련성이 있다. 둘째, 승진에 따른 정치관련 업무 증가는 교사의 이직 에 영향을 미친다. 셋째, 교육 및 정치의 연관성으로 인한 교직 내 민주적인 문화형성이 어렵다. 넷째, 승진으로 인한 급여 인상이 매력적이지 않다.

        This study delves into the temporary English teachers’ identities through at their reflective journals and interviews, grounded on Norton’s (2000, 2013) and Wenger’s (1998) conceptions of identity. In taking second/foreign language teacher education course at a TESOL MA program, 16 teachers’ reflective journals and interviews were analyzed qualitatively for emergent themes, in terms of the three modes of belonging in identity formation (Wenger, 1998). The analysis revealed that the participants represented the identities of the controller, the diverse teaching program participant. the teaching activity sharer, the negative future dreamer, and the language expert. Moreover, most of the participants, as non-regular teachers, concerned themselves about their future career as part-timer. To empower non-regular teachers’ voices, this study discussed and suggested how to strengthen temporary teachers’ identity for their professional development.

        This study aims at exploring the theoretical perspectives and research related to second language teacher identities. In particular, this paper focuses on the studies on the identities of English teachers in the Korean educational system. Major findings are as follows: First, based on the previous literature on teacher identities, teacher identities are defined as dynamic, multidimensional, and changing, as they continuously interact with individual, social, and cultural contexts. Second, it was found that studies have focused on (1) the meta-analyses of English teacher identities, (2) native-speaking English teacher identities, (3) the identities of non-native-speaking English teachers co-teaching with native-English-speaking teachers, (4) the identities of non-native-speaking English teachers including pre- and in-service teachers, and (5) teacher identity development through teacher education activities. Lastly, this paper brings up issues and suggestions on the formation and development of English teacher identities. It also offers directions for the future research on professional identities of second language teachers.

        본 연구는 그림책 수업에서 교사들이 갖는 어려움을 알아보고자 S시의 교사 2인을 대상으로 주 1회씩 3개월에 걸쳐 12회 교사면담을 통해 자료를 수집하고 분석하였다. 연구결과, 교사들은 그림책이 어렵고 그 책을 가지고 수업을 진행하는 것이 스트레스가 된다고 하였다. 교사들은 그림책의 그림을 간과한 채 글에 집중하는 경향이 있으며 그림책마다 자신이 선호하는 그림책이 다른 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 교사들이 그림책으로 수업을 진행하면서 갖는 어려움으로 그림책을 충분히 읽을 수 있는 시간적 여유가 없고 그림책의 선정기준에 대한 이해가 부족하며 그림책을 읽어주는 방법과 적절한 활동시간, 활동공간을 배려하는 것에 대한 어려움을 가지고 있었다. 본 연구는 그림책수업을 하면서 교사의 어려움을 지원하기 위해 적절한 교사 장학과 지원이 얼마나 중요한지에 대해 시사하는 바가 크다.

        This study examines what role English writing instructors need to play in peer revision activities. Students participating in the study were asked to go through multiple draft writing process in which they wrote three drafts on each writing assignment and review their peers’ essays in both a written comment sheet and an oral discussion. Overall, the results show that the peer comments played little role in improving the students’ essays from the first to second drafts. However, great improvement is observed from the second to final drafts. Specifically, little effect of the feedback on the improvement of non-linguistic features of the essays is identified. Regarding the linguistic features, improvement was made from the second to final drafts. However, it is achieved by both the peer and teacher comments. Therefore, it is concluded in the study that the teacher comments played a role in helping the students produce the linguistically improved final drafts. The study recommends the instructor’s explicit, detailed feedback to the errors caused from students’ insufficient writing and English competence.

        The purpose of this study was to explore pre-service teachers' reflectivity occurring in their first-person reflection on their experience, by examining how they defined a problem and suggested its solution. For the research purpose, this study adopted Dewey's (1933) idea of reflection from which the definition of reflection in much research on teachers' reflections originated. This study analyzed the problem sections occurring in their reflection after first teaching practice, in terms of focus and depth of problem solving. The total number of the sections was seventy-nine and on average each participant's teaching journal involved three sections of a problem. Examination of focus of reflection was done as to 'agent of problem' and 'target of reflection', whereas an analysis of the depth of their reflection was done in terms of the number of dimensions and combination of dimensions of problem solving. The findings showed that much more focus of the pre-service teachers' reflection was put on the performance inside the classroom than outside. That is, the interaction between the teacher and the student was their primary concern. Also, the findings indicated that over half of the problem sections were beyond the superficial level of reflective thinking, but one third of the problem sections stayed still within the superficial depth of reflection. This suggested the necessity of providing guidelines on the focus and depth of reflection when reflection was employed as a tool of pre-service teacher's professional development.

        It's long been noted that a serious discrepancy exists between elementary school English classes and middle school English classes. This study explores the differences in the teacher talks of elementary and middle school classrooms. To this end, three elementary school English classes and three middle school English classes are tape-recorded, and their teacher utterances are analyzed according to forms of utterances, functions of utterances and language types. The result shows that elementary school English teachers use significantly more command forms and feedback than middle school English teachers while they use significantly more non-class related utterances more than elementary school teachers. They utter class-related managerial and disciplinary categories significantly more than middle school English teachers while they do miscellaneous categories significantly more than elementary school teachers. In terms of languages teachers use in the classroom, elementary school teachers speaks English significantly more than middle school English teachers. Elementary school teachers tend to use plain Korean to individual students while using formal Korean to the whole class. Middle school teachers tend to use formal Korean irrespective of whole group, small group and individual students.

        The purpose of this study is to explore the researcher’s experiences as a teacher educator of a TESOL program at a private university in Korea. The study was inspired by a growing trend in postmodern approaches which seek to draw out the hidden voice of the researcher. In order to explore the dialogical engagement of the researcher/teacher educator and the participants, the researcher adapts an autoethnographic approach which seeks to understand the self in an ethnographic study. Furthermore, this study calls for a shift from employing reflective practices in teacher education programs to reflexivity, which emphasizes the mutuality of both structures. The study presents a series of self-narratives and compares them with narratives drawn from semi-structured interviews with three TESOL students. By employing the progressive/regressive method of data analysis, the researcher seeks to understand the historical, cultural, or biographical factors which may have contributed toward the discoveries made by the researcher. Findings of the study indicate that the researcher was able to gain a deeper understanding of herself as well as the students and the TESOL context in Korea.

        This study investigates the relationship between a native English-speaking teacher and EFL students in the response-and-revision process. The data consisted of drafts and revisions produced by three students in response to teacher comments and interviews with students. In order to examine how EFL students react to the feedback, teachers’ written feedback on the papers was evaluated by calculating frequency counts on the same types of feedback. We then examined the extent to which students made use of teacher feedback in their revisions. In addition, we supplemented our interpretations by extracting aspects of the students’ views through analysis of the interview data. All three students believe that only native speakers can correct language errors in their writing. Furthermore, the students prefer or indeed demand native English-speaking teachers as writing teachers. In fact, dissimilar student reactions to native English-speaking teacher feedback probably arise from whether and how they positioned themselves as a writer in the EFL writing classroom.

        This study aims to describe the pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) and teaching performance of junior secondary language teachers based on the tests administered during the teacher certification program, and identify the correlation between both variables. It involved 124 junior secondary school teachers, consisting of 70 Indonesian language teachers and 54 English language teachers, from various schools in West Java Province, Indonesia. To organize research procedures, this study adopted a descriptive method used to describe the characteristics of teachers who participated in the teacher participation program, their current pedagogical content knowledge and teaching performance based on the test results. Findings show that PCK has a strong correlation with teaching performance. However, other factors such as employment status, academic qualification, and age have significant effects on the mastery of those two main variables. A further study should be conducted to gauge more sound findings.

        This study aims to examine the Bologna Process in the reform of European higher education over the past decade. The year 2010 saw the completion of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) since the Bologna Process has been adopted, European higher education has expanded both quantitatively and qualitatively with full participation of European countries and the position of higher education in Europe elevated to a central position in the development and promotion of the competitiveness of European countries. While integration, quality assurance, lifelong learning and student mobility are considered to be its main achievements, the socioeconomic situation among the member countries hinders the Bologna Process from successful implementation. As a result, four questions in regards to the Bologna Process are asked. These are whether ‘soft-law governance’ is working, whether there is an ‘unchallenged consensus,’ whether a ‘brain-drain or brain circulation’ is occurring, and whether it is an example of ‘educational innovation.’ In conclusion, bottom-up governance and open coordination among various groups in higher education will create an agenda for a higher education motivating paradigm change toward student-based learning and education. As a result, the Bologna Process may be a ‘global teacher’ leading the change in higher education reform in European and non-European countries

        본 연구의 목적은 어린이집 원장의 코칭 리더십과 교사 효능감 및 직무만족에 대한 인식이 배경변인에 따라 어떠한지 살펴보고 교사가 지각한 원장의 코칭 리더십이 교사의 자아효능과,직무만족도간의 어떠한 관계가 있는지를 살펴보고자 하였다.이를 위해 세종시에 소재한 어린이집에 재직 중인 교사 210명을 대상으로 설문지를 배부하여 최종 202부를 회수하여 본 연구에 활용하였다. ANOVA와 Pearson 상관분석을 실시한 결과, 연령, 경력, 자격의 개인배경에 따라 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 보였으며 경력에 따른 코칭 리더십의 인식의 차이와 초임교사의 교사 효능감의 차이가 있었다.또한 연령이 증가함에 따라 보수와 승진에 대한 만족도는 낮았고 4-6년차 교사들이 상대적으로 직무만족도가 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 코칭 리더십과 교사 효능감 및 직무만족도의 상관은 정적 상관관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다.

        In this commentary, I examined the implications of Existentialism for science teaching and teacher education. Existentialist thoughts and premises can be used to explore the human element in an educational system. Before emphasizing the pragmatic and technical aspects of teaching, we need to rethink why we teach and recognize our learners as unique beings in a continual process of becoming. By incorporating the existential perspective into curriculums and pedagogies of science education, we can help learners to make their existences and experiences meaningful. This paper consists of three parts. In the first part, I drew on relevant aspects of Existentialism and its implications on the views of the learner. In the second part, I examined the competency-based curriculum in light of Existentialism. Existentialism aims, in part, to develop an educated person who possesses a clear sense of personal identity, a critical attitude, and the inclination to be a life-long learner, and so on. These characteristics are consistent with the implications developed from the competency-based curriculum. In the third part, I explored pedagogical activities consistent with existentialist thinking the ultimate goal of which is to create authentic individuals who can take responsibility for being humans. In the conclusion, I discussed how existentialist ways of thinking and teaching call for the science teacher's reflective practices, where the teacher needs to integrate personal and professional knowledge as the situation demands.
