This paper discusses two metaphorical extensions of the Caused-Motion (CM) Construction, the Intocausative and Out-of-causative constructions. The two constructions inherit the causative meaning from the CM, but employs several key different grammatical properties. The paper reviews some key properties of the constructions and investigate their authentic usages with the help of the corpora, COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English) and COHA (Corpus of Historical American English). The paper also sketches a Construction Grammar view that may account for the shared as well as idiosyncratic properties of the two constructions in investigation.

The question of how and where adverbs are licensed has relatively been discussed less vigorously. It will be argued here that though the hierarchy suggested in Cinque(1999) reflects the cross-linguistic order of functional heads, it leaves room for a revision for the so-called sentential adverbs and the adverbs modifying NP/DP found in English and Korean. Based on the observations in Bogal-Allbritten(2014) and Lee(2008), the licensing relationship between the syntactic heads and adverbs suggested in Potsdam(1998) will be revised. Also, the hierarchy for adverbs suggested in 박(2000) will be slightly revised for the adverbs modifying NP/DP found in English and Korean.

The purpose of this paper is to explore Türker (2013) in depth and analyze its significance and problems, in addition to briefly suggesting alternatives. Türker(2013) is meaningful for the following reasons: First, it is one of the few overseas studies dealing with Korean emotions. Second, it demonstrates that Korean emotion metaphors support the universality of Conceptual Metaphor Theory to a substantial extent. Third, it presents the frequency and productivity of Korean emotion metaphors based on the corpus and shows their correlation. Crucial problems with Türker (2013), however, include the following: (ⅰ) the method of selection of emotion words for the corpus analysis; (ⅱ) the selection and erroneous analysis of example sentences; (ⅲ) errors in the setting and categorizing of source domains. Consequently, given errors relating to Korean emotional metaphors in overseas journals, this paper which examines Türker (2013) in depth can offer the beginnings to prevent such errors in data and analysis from being further cited without verification of appropriacy.

This paper investigates the Korean causative constructions divided into the short-form and long-form causatives and predicts the change in the usage of these two causatives. The two types of causative constructions are examined from the medieval Korean to the modern Korean diachronically. We point out the decrease of the use of the short-form causatives, and the expansion of the use of the long-form causatives conversely. Based on this phenomenon, it is predicted that the frequency of use of causative constructions is gradually shifting from the short-form causatives to the long-form causatives. We prove the prediction on the phenomenon through analyzing the survey questionnaires. Statistical program SPSS 23.0. is used in analyzing the questionaries.

In an attempt to solve the problem of various English spellings of Korean names of landmarks and geographical locations used for maps, road signs and guidebooks with the lack of standardization, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism enacted the MCST instruction no. 279, an English translation guideline for public sector translation, on December 29, 2015. On September 23, 2015, the Ministry of Education announced a new national curriculum for elementary and secondary schools, Proclamation of the Ministry of Education #2015-74. This revised national curriculum for Elementary English textbooks will take effect on March 1, 2018. The main purpose of this paper is threefold: i) to review the English Translation Guideline for Public Sector Translation proposed by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, ii) to analyze English spelling of Korean culture-related terms from 5 elementary school English textbooks which are currently used according to the English Translation Guideline, and iii) to suggest how to write Korean culture-related terms for new elementary school English textbooks which will be published after 2018 according to the 2015 Revised National Curriculum.

The study investigates the validity of ‘subjecthood diagnostics’ in Korean proposed in the previous studies. Based on the studies on subjecthood diagnostics in Korean Single Subject Constructions (non-MSCs) and Multiple Subject Constructions (MSCs), the role of two subjecthood diagnostics―Honorific Agreement (HA) and Plural Copying (PC)―in these two constructions are examined through an empirical syntactic experiment. Seventy Korean native speakers participated in the experiment using acceptability judgment task designed to probe their intuition. The results show (i) that in the Non-MSCs, Honorific Agreement (HA) reliably seems to choose the subject (i.e., the only Nom-marked NP), whereas Plural Copying (PC) does not seem to pick out the subject in a less consistent manner; and (ii) that in the MSCs, neither Honorific Agreement (HA) nor Plural Copying (PC) seems to be a reliable subjecthood diagnostic. Possible reasons for these results are discussed.
