Research in theoretical linguistics is often driven by a goal of a reduction of theoretical postulates and the simplification of the overall system. Apparently disparate accounts of disparate phenomena may be shown to all full under one meta-principle, or the effects of some mechanism may be shown to follow from other independent components of the grammar. Specifically, I will only be concerned here with the part of X`-theory that distinguishes words from phrases-considering in what ways the syntax needs to make reference to the notions of minimal and maximal projection. We will see that non-saturated elements can be selected as X^0s, and that saturated elements may have special distribution of X^0, not XP. Adverbs, particles and pronouns lack valence or selectional properties, yet need not, and in some cases must not, behave as phrases. Consequently, the attempt to reduce phrasality to saturatedness seems misguided.

This paper provides a way for the expletive there to associate directly with its indefmite DP via Agree between their Sc` -features in narrow-syntactic derivation. It is claimed that in English, External Merge of there with _u[person] and _u[Case] features need to be allowed in the Spec of a weak v, where no θ-role is assigned to there and the there-argument link can be established by assuming that the _u[person] feature of there is valued via Agree with the φ-set of the associate DP. It is assumed that there and an indefinite DP are selected as a pair in the Sub-Lexical Array. A single θ-role and a unique Case value may thus be given to them. The single θ-role will be saturated as they merge into the weak vP and the unique Case value will be given to them via Multiple Agree with a higher T or v during the derivation. These are based on the assumption that Multiple Agree takes place sequentially, but not simultaneously, contra Chomsky (2001). Sequential application of Multiple Agree may contribute to rendering the computation purely derivational and remove the distinction of Multiple Agree from Agree.

This study focuses on the implications of the acceptability contrast of the locative inversion (LI) and presentational there insertion (PTI) constructions when considering some recent accounts of Extended Projection Principle (EPP) effects (see, among others, Chomsky 1995, 2000, Kim 2002, Lasnik 2001). For this purpose, we use Kim and Lee`s (to appear) acceptability judgment test composed of LI and PTI constructions, which was administered to native English speaking subjects. Results show judgment contrasts and confirm the slightly degraded nature of the LI constructions. In regard to the theoretical importance of the EPP, why perceptions of the contrasts differ is captured through a theoretical analysis.

In this paper, I show that VP-front, some cases of wh-movement, and topicalization all share properties that would be explained by adopting some version of minimal reconstruction proposed in Jang (2000). I show that previos analyses proposed to resolve the issue of binding effects exhibited in VP fronting sentences may not be viable to account for wider range of data. That is Huang (1993) proposes that VP-internal Subject Hypothesis and general binding theory are enough to explain the said phenomena. Takano (1995) proposes that reconstruction, which is independently motivated, is needed to explain the binding phenomena in VP fronting and related constructions. This paper shows that neither analysis, as it is now, can cover relevant data and that some more qualification such as Jang (2000) may be needed to conditions on reconstruction.

Over the past few decades, a lot of research has been conducted on what factors influence the choice of Figure and Ground in the description of a situation, e.g., Talmy (1983, 2000) and Langacker (1991) among others. However, the choice of Figure and Ground is very subtle in that both the objective properties of the entities and the subjective perspective or attention of the speaker interact with each other. Specifically, little has been said to provide a unified understanding of different syntactic and semantic structures which deal with the same situation, involving Figure and Ground relation. For this reason, this paper aims to elaborate the possible elements which govern the choice of Figure and Ground in a given sentence and account for various syntactic and semantic structures in terms of Figure and Ground organization. These include Figure-Ground reversal by means of (a-)symmetric relation, active and passive voice, lexicalization patterns, crosslinguistic difference between English and Korean, semantic roles, selectional restrictions, and discourse.

The aim of this paper is first to examine the characteristics of hints as a form of requests in relation to politeness and then analyze the semantic device on the basis of the type and degree of opacity in natural data. Some hints are so fixed and routinized that their use is the same as that of conventionally indirect requests while others are so diverse and rather specific that their pragmatic force is varied according to the interlocutors and situations. English hints get lower politeness ratings regardless of the degree of formality, while Korean hints with honorifics are considered very polite. A survey of requestive hints in natural Korean and English data has shown that the frequencies of hints are about one third of all the utterances by speakers of Koreans as well as those of English. This means that provided that there is no lack of pragmatic clarity between interlocutors, there is a tendency of avoiding expressing explicitly what they would like to say. That is the very essence of using hinting strategies, which could explain the discrepancy between lower level in politeness and high frequency in actual use. The hinting strategies adopted here are a means to establish solidarity. Besides, among the three strategies in propositional scale, speakers of Korean are found to prefer statement of act to statement of component, while those of English prefer the latter to the former. Explaining hinting strategies as a means to realize politeness in this way faces a dilemma in the light of the formulation of politeness by Brown & Levinson(1987) in that both indirectness, a negative politeness, and solidarity, a positive politeness, are thought to be used under a single strategy in this approach. This could call for a new concept of politeness and further studies.

A considerable amount of literature on NPIs has taken syntactic/semantic approaches to identify their licensing environments. However, adverb NPIs in Korean reveal their own idiosyncratic distributational behaviors which the previous analyses cannot explain. Their behaviors reflect the speaker`s different attitudes about the event/situation he is describing. So any appropriate theory of NPIs should be able to account for such pragmatic functions to predict their properties correctly. For this purpose, we classify adverb NPIs into 4 types according to their distributional behaviors in rhetorical questions, and we describe their pragmatic functions; this pragmatic analysis gives a good account of why the 4 types of Adverb NPIs show different distributions in different sentence constructions.

This paper examines the morphophonological variation of L-irregular verbs in Korean based on the empirical data collected through Internet search. The most common variation, Variant A, retains the stem 1 in more occasions than the standard dialect by not dropping the suffixal vowel I, while Variant B, the less frequent one, retains the 1 in all possible cases even by inserting the vowel L These variations are explained to result from a slight change in the same set of constraints. It is argued that variable rankings among three constraints in particular, i.e., 1-i, F(i), and F(1), bring about the variations. Also, the unequal frequency distribution among the three dialects seems to suggest that the rankings between these constraints are not discrete but rather continuous, along the line with Boersma and Hayes (2001).

This paper reports on an analysis of English research article introductions written by English native speaking authors and Korean authors, using Swales` (1990) Create A Research Space (CARS) model. Data analysis leads to a modified version of the CARS model. The results of the analysis based on the revised one reveal that the NS and the NNS authors employ slightly but certainly different rhetorical strategies in writing research article introductions, which has pedagogical implications. Compared to the NS authors, the Korean authors are seen to employ the strategies of "claiming centrality" and "continuing tradition" slightly more often. The Korean authors justify their research by stating "a problem in the real world" more often and summarize principal findings less often.
