We claim in this paper that null arguments are a pronoun linked to a topic in their minimal CP domain. This claim is basically a unification of the following three existing proposals accounting for null argument phenomena: flexible null topic analysis that null arguments are bound by a flexible topic, pro analysis that they are a pronoun, and a proposal that pronouns are linked to CP edge. We show that this unified analysis nicely deals with distribution and interpretation of null arguments in Korean.

The purpose of this paper is to show that if ‘-ise’, ‘-se’ and ‘-i’ are treated as allomorphs. Since ‘-i’ attached to numerals and classifiers in the numeral quantifier constructions can be supposed to have adverbiality, the numerals and classifiers associated with such an element can be introduced in vP. Furthermore, we attempt to prove that nominative case marking can be deleted in the constructions. For the purpose of this paper, we investigate the analyses by several scholars on the allomorphy, finding out that ‘-i’ can be an abbreviation of ‘-ise’, a nominative case marker and affix. Within the vP, as ‘honca(se)’ functions as an adverbial phrase, if ‘seys-i(se)’ and ‘seymyeng-i(se)’ also do so, we can explain why phrases like ‘seymyeng-i’ can be in the vP. In addition, we examine nominative case ellipsis phenomenon in the light of Hong's generalization that case markers are optional to arguments in the complement position but obligatory to arguments in the spec positions, rethinking the possibility of the ellipsis of nominative case makers.

This study explores the frequency distribution of the verb seem together with its three alternating complement structures: to-infinitive, that-clause, and adjectival/nominal complements. Based on an analysis of sample data selected from COCA, we investigate the conditions that may influence the choice among these argument structures. Our analysis has shown the following results: First, of the three complement structures, the that-clause complement was rarely used, a pattern consistent with the findings of previous studies. Second, discourse pragmatic factors such as information status and topichood of the subject, and judgement/evaluative semantics of complements were shown to be involved in the selection of the argument structure. Third, the preference for simpler structures evidenced in the usage data suggests the economy principle as a possible force behind the argument selection. The preliminary findings of this study should be complemented by future research with bigger sample data.

The study attempts to investigate how Korean native adult speakers comprehend the distributive function of extrinsic plural marker -tul(EPM) attached to different verb types. It also examines how the three verb types, each of which can evoke a distributive interpretation a collective interpretation and both of the interpretations, influence the sentence interpretation in terms of distributivity. The inconsistency of the previous analyses on the distributivity needs to be verified to shade light on Korean native adult speakers’ knowledge for the extrinsic plural marking from the experimental approach. To do so, the study employed Translation Task, in which the participants were asked to read a story that ends with a sentence to depict a situation. The last sentence was manipulated either to contain EPM attached to three different verb types or not to contain it. And then they were instructed to select any possible translations for the sentence among three choices that correspond to a distributive interpretation, a collective interpretation and both of the interpretations respectively. The results showed that Korean native adult speakers assigned more distributive interpretations to the sentences with EPM than sentences without it. It was also found that there were differences between verb types in evoking distributivity. However, the sentences with EPM also allowed for collective interpretations, which implies that it is not an obligatory distributor but plays a role of a distributive facilitator in the sentence interpretation.

Several researchers have discussed which element is preferably chosen as a vehicle in metonymic constructions Langacker (1993) claims that, all other things being equal, these cognitive principles govern the choice of metonymic vehicle: human over non-human, whole over part, concrete over abstract, visible over non-visible. This claim has been made, but no previous case studies regarding these principles have been conducted. To remedy this gap, this paper examines 510 instances of PART FOR WHOLE metonymy in the names of events and accidents in Korean newspapers from 2010 through 2019. The result shows that AGENT is most frequently utilized to refer to whole events, supporting one principle of Langacker, human over nonhuman. CAUSE, PATIENT, and PLACE follows AGENT. INSTRUMENT is not very frequently used unless it achieves its salience through contexts. TIME is observed only once. Considering that TIME was used frequently to name past events, as in the 4.19 Revolution, 5.18 Democratic Movement, the 4.3 Events, the infrequent use of TIME reflects a cultural change in its cognitive salience.

This study aims at unveiling phonetic cue weighting of English word recognition by Korean learners of English using a web-based online perception experiment. The longer duration of a high front tense vowel than that of a lax counterpart is used as a cue by native English speakers and presumably as a cue by Korean learners of English. The longer duration of a vowel before voiced stops than that of an equivalent before voiceless stops serves as a cue by native Speakers of English and also probably by Korean learners of English. A web-based online experiment has been designed to examine how Korean learners of English cope with a mixture of fine grained phonetic cues. Results of the web-based online experiment reveal that duration is primarily and robustly used to distinguish a tense vowel before voiced stops and a lax vowel before voiceless stops. At the same time, spectral cues are also put to use, though to a lesser extent, to help make a distinction from a tense vowel before voiceless stops and a lax vowel before voiced stops. The study implies that learners of English try to utilize a complex mixture of acoustic cues to distinguish words.

The present study investigates the collocations of the first person plural possessive pronoun in order to identify L1 influence in Korean EFL learners' writing, in comparison with native English speakers’ writing. From a cognitive linguistic perspective, this learner corpus research focuses on the use of the first person pronoun OUR in English, which seems to be negatively transferred by somewhat peculiar usages of the Korean equivalent pronoun wuli. The contrastive interlanguage analysis first shows that Korean learners significantly overuse first person plural pronouns whereas they significantly underuse first person singular pronouns, compared to native English speakers. Second, it also indicates that the distribution of frequencies of the ‘OUR + noun’ collocations according to a classification based on the Sejong Corpus seems very similar in both corpora, and that the frequencies are likely to be dependent upon specific individual collocates. Third, Korean learners appear to particularly overuse six specific ‘OUR + noun’ collocations rather than ‘MY + noun’ collocations, which can be argued to be empirical evidence of L1 influence. The findings of the present study are expected to provide valuable implications to English language teaching in classroom in Korea.

Working memory is defined as the mechanisms or processes that allow humans to store information in the face of interference such as processing other information during sentence processing. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between working memory capacity and PBL task performance with EFL university students. Forty university students participated in this study and they were divided into two groups according to working memory scores (higher and lower groups). Reading span test has been implemented for working memory task. PBL tasks consist of word, phrase, sentence, and explanation levels. The results show that WM capacity is significantly related to the PBL task performance. The correlation analysis of WM scores(storage and processing) and PBL task performance showed different tendency in WM higher and lower groups according to the task types.

The purpose of this study is to analyze how correctly the English teacher acknowledges and uses the assessment tool for CLT (communicative language teaching) when he or she observes another English teacher’s class. The key words closely related to the assessment tool for CLT in the assessment report samples that English teachers submit for another English teacher’s class are coded in corpus data and investigated by case study on individual procedures in class, such as lesson plan, class implementation and management, and evaluation. It turns out that the English teacher observes and assesses the English class in each step focusing on “learning objective” and “clear lesson plans”, “classroom English” and “learning materials”, “management of activities” and “student’s attention and participation.” However, it is necessary for the English teacher to raise awareness about student’s specific demand for English class, teacher’s knowledge of language, time management, transition to the next phrases, and maintenance of order.
