This study investigated refinement behaviors of TiC powders produced under different impact energy conditions using a mechanical milling process. The initial coarse TiC powders with an average diameter of 9.3 were milled for 5, 20, 60 and 120 mins through the conventional low energy mechanical milling (LEMM, 22G) and specially designed high energy mechanical milling (HEMM, 65G). TiC powders with angular shape became spherical one and their sizes decreased as the milling time increased, irrespective of milling energy. Based upon the FE-SEM and BET results of milled powders, it was found initial coarse TiC powders readily became much finer near 100 nm within 60 min under HEMM, while their sizes were over 200 nm under LEMM, despite the long milling time of up to 120 min. Particularly, ultra-fine TiC powders with an average diameter of 77 nm were fabricated within 60 min in the presence of toluene under HEMM.

In this study, p-type : TAGS-85 compound powders were prepared by gas atomization process, and then their microstructures and mechanical properties were investigated. The fabricated powders were of spherical shape, had clean surface, and illustrated fine microstructure and homogeneous + GeTe solid solution. Powder X-ray diffraction results revealed that the crystal structure of the TAGS-85 sample was single rhombohedral GeTe phase, which with a space group . The grain size of the powder particles increased while the micro Vickers hardness decreased with increasing annealing temperature within the range of 573 K and 723 K due to grain growth and loss of Te. In addition, the crystal structure of the powder went through a phase transformation from rhombohedral () at low-temperature to cubic () at high-temperature with increasing annealing temperature. The micro Vickers hardness of the as-atomized powder was around 165 Hv, while it decreased gradually to 130 Hv after annealing at 673K, which is still higher than most other fabrication processes.

The Ni-based bulk metallic glass matrix composites were fabricated by spark plasma sintering of mixture of gas-atomized metallic glass powders and ductile brass powders. The successful consolidation of metallic glass matrix composite was achieved by strong bonding between metallic glass powders due to viscous flow deformation and lower stress of ductile brass powders in the supercooled liquid state during spark plasma sintering. The composite shows some macroscopic plasticity after yielding, which was obtained by introducing a ductile second brass phase in the Ni-based metallic glass matrix.

The Cu-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) composites containing Zr-based metallic glass phase have been consolidated by spark plasma sintering using the mixture of Cu-based and Zr-based metallic glass powders in their overlapped supercooled liquid region. The Zr-based metallic glass phases are well distributed homogeneously in the Cu-based metallic glass matrix after consolidation process. The successful consolidation of BMG composites with dual amorphous phases was corresponding to the sound viscous flow of the two kinds of metallic glass powders in their overlapped supercooled liquid region.

The Cu-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) composite was fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) using of gas-atomized metallic glass powders and ductile brass powders. No defect such as pores and cavities was observed at the interface between the brass powder and the metallic glass matrix, suggesting that the SPS process caused a severe viscous flow of the metallic glass and brass phases in the supercooled liquid region, resulting in a full densification. The BMG composites shows some macroscopic plasticity after yielding, although the levels of strength decreased.

In the present study, Zr-base metallic glass (MG) and Zr-base BMG/diamond composites were fabricated using a combination of gas atomization and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The microstructure, thermal stability and mechanical property of both the specimens as atomized and sintered were investigated. The experimental results showed that the SPSed specimens could be densified into nearly 100% and maintained the initial thermal stability at the sintering temperature of 630K. In addition, MG/diamond powder composites were successfully synthesised using SPS process. The composites, even a very low diamond volume fraction, generated a significant increase in compressive strength. With increasing the diamond volume fraction, the compressive strength was also increased due to the addition of hardest diamonds. It suggests that these composites would be potential candidates for a new cutting tool material.

This work is to report not only the effect of rapid solidification of alloys on the micro-structure, but also the extrusion behavior on the materials properties. The average grain size of the atomized powders was about . The alloy powders of , consisted of I-Phase (Icosahedral, ) as well as Cubic structured W-Phase (), which was finely distributed within matrix. The oxide layer formed along the Mg surface was about 48 nm in thickness. In order to study the consolidation behavior of Mg alloy powders, extrusion was carried out with the area reduction ratio of 10:1 to 20:1. As the ratio increased, fully deformed and homogeneous microstructure could be obtained, and the mechanical properties such as tensile strength and elongation were simultaneously increased.

Using spark plasma sintering process (SPS), Ti-6Al-4V alloy powders were successfully consolidated without any contamination happened due to reaction between the alloy powders and graphite mold. Variation of microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated as a function of SPS temperature and time. Compared with hot isostatic pressing (HIP), the sintering time and temperature could be lowered to be 10 min. and , respectively. At the SPS condition, UTS and elongation were about 890 MPa and 24%, respectively. Considering the density of 98.5% and elongation of 24%, further improving the tensile strength would obtain by increasing the SPS pressure.

Mg-4.3Zn-0.7Y (at%) alloy powders were prepared using an industrial scale gas atomizer, followed by warm extrusion. The powders were almost spherical in shape. The microstructure of atomized powders and those extruded bars was examined using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscope (EDS) and X-ray Diffractometer (XRD). The grain size of the powders was coarsen as the initial powder size increased. After the extrusion, the grain size became fine due to the severe plastic deformation during the extrusion with the ratio of 10:1. Both the ultimate strength and elongation were enhanced with the decrease of initial particle size.

This work is to present a new synthesis of metallic glass (MG)/metallic glass (MG) composites using gas atomization and spark plasma sintering (SPS) processes. The MG powders of (CuA) and (NiA) as atomized consist of fully amorphous phases and present a different thermal behavior; (glass transition temperature) and (crystallization temperature) are 716K and 765K for the Cu base powder, but 836K and 890K for the Ni base ones, respectively. SPS process was used to consolidate the mixture of each amorphous powder, being in weight. The resultant phases were Cu crystalline dispersed NiA matrix composites as well as NiA phase dispersed CuA matrix composites, depending on the SPS temperatures. Effect of the second phases embedded in the MG matrix was discussed on the micro-structure and mechanical properties.
