Carbon was known to be one of effective additives which can improve the flux pinning of at high magnetic fields. In this study, glycerin was selected as a chemical carbon source for the improvement of critical current density of . In order to replace some of boron atoms by carbon atoms, the boron powder was heat-treated with liquid glycerin. The glycerin-treated boron powder was mixed with an appropriate amount of magnesium powder to composition and the powder pallets were heat treated at for 30 min in a flowing argon gas. It was found that the superconducting transition temperature of prepared using glycerin-treated boron powder was 36.6 K, which is slightly smaller than (37.1 K) of undoped . The critical current density of was higher than that of undoped and the improvement effect was more remarkable at higher magnetic fields. The , decrease and increase associated with the glycerin treatment for boron powder was explained in terms of the carbon substitution to boron site.

Carbon nanotube (CNT)/ composites were synthesized to enhance the hydrogen storage properties. The emphasis was made on the effect of different shortening methods of CNTs on the open-tip structure and the resulting properties. The use of open CNTs as a starting material resulted in an enhanced hydrogen properties of CNT/ composites. Among the employed methods for the shortening of CNTs, wet milling using ethanol was the most efficient, while ultrasonic acid treatment or thermal decomposition resulted in a less hydrogen storage capacity.

The densification behavior of Al-20Si-5.5Fe-1.2Mg-0.5Mn powders was investigated through micro-structure analysis of sintered specimens. The specimens sintered in vacuum or in high purity (99.999%) nitrogen showed porous near-surface microstructures. The densification of near-surface part was enhanced by means of ultra-high purity (99.9999%) nitrogen atmosphere. The relationship between slow densification and oxide surfaces of Al alloy powders was discussed. And the effects of Mg addition, nitrogen gas, and humidity on densification were discussed. In addition, the rapid growth of primary Si crystals above the critical temperature was reported.

Aluminum alloys are not only lightweight materials, but also have excellent thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity and workability, hence, they are widely used in industry. It is important to control and enhance the densification behavior of metal powders of aluminum. Investigation on the extrusion processing combined with equal channel angular pressing for densification of aluminum powders was performed in order to develop a continuous production process. The continuous processing achieved high effective strain and full relative density at . Optimum processing conditions were suggested for good mechanical properties. The results of this simulation helped to understand the distribution of relative density and effective strain.

Elongated CdSe nanoparticles with a diameter of 3-7nm have been successfully synthesized using two surfactants of trioctylphospine (TOP) and hexadecylamine (HDA) at . The formation of elongated CdSe nanoparticles is possibly due to the cooperative effects from both the different binding capability of two surfactants (TOP and HDA) and intrinsically anisotropic crystal structure of the CdSe. The electron diffraction pattern of CdSe nanoparticles revealed the formation of wurzite phase. The CdSe samples showed red-shifted wavelength from 560 to 580nm with increasing the refluxing time due to the gradual growth of CdSe nanoparticles. The relatively broad absorption band can be attributed to the surface state of CdSe nanoparticles. The possible formation mechanism of elongated CdSe nanoparticles was proposed and the characteristics of CdSe have been discussed as well.

In this study, consolidation behavior and hardness of commercially available molybdenum powder were investigated. In order to analyze compaction response of the powders, the elastoplastic constitutive equation based on the yield function by Shima and Oyane was applied to predict the compact density under uniaxial pressure from 100MPa to 700MPa. The compacts were sintered at for 20-60 min. The sintered density and grain size of molybdenum were increased with increasing the compacting pressure and processing temperature and time. The constitutive equation, proposed by Kwon and Kim, was applied to simulate the creep densification rate and grain growth of molybdenum powder compacts. The calculated results were compared with experimental data for the powders. The effects of the porosity and grain size on the hardness of the specimens were explained based on the modified plasticity theory of porous material and Hall-Petch type equation.

Silver coated copper composite powders were prepared by electroless plating method by controlling the activation and deposition process variables such as feeding rate of silver ions solution, concentration of reductant and molar ratio of activation solution at room temperature. The characteristics of the product were verified by using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic absorption (A.A.). It is noted that completely cleansing the copper oxide layers and protecting the copper particles surface from hydrolysis were important to obtain high quality Ag-Cu composite powders. The optimum conditions of Ag-Cu composite powder synthesis were molar ratio 4, concentration of reductant 15g/l and feeding rate of silver ions solution 2 ml/min.

Dynamic plastic deformation behavior of copper particles occurred during the cold spray processing was numerically analyzed using the finite element method. The study was to investigate the impact as well as the heat transfer phenomena, happened due to collision of the copper particle of in diameter with various initial velocities of into the copper matrix. Effective strain, temperature and their distribution were investigated for adiabatic strain and the accompanying adiabatic shear localization at the particle/substrate interface.

Al-Cu alloy nano powders have been produced by the electrical explosion of Cu-plated Al wire. The porous nano particles were prepared by leaching for Al-Cu alloy nano powders in 40wt% NaOH aqueous solution. The surface area of leached powder for 5 hours was 4 times larger than that of original alloy nano powder. It is demonstrated that porous nano particles could be obtained by selective leaching of alloy nano powder. It is expected that porous Cu nano powders can be applied for catalyst of SRM (steam reforming methanol).

Ni-W(1-5 at.%) alloy rods were made by powder metallurgy process including powder mixing, compacting and subsequent sintering. Ni and W powder of appropriate compositions were mixed by a ball milling and isostatically pressed in a rubber mold into a rod. The compacted rods were sintered at at a reduced atmosphere for densification. The lattice parameters of Ni-W alloys were estimated by a high resolution neutron powder diffractometer. All sintered rods were found to have a face centered cubic structure without any impurity phase, but the diffraction peak locations were linearly shifted with increasing W content. The lattice parameter of a pure Ni rod was which is consistent with the value reported in JCPDS data. The lattice parameter of N-W alloy rods increased by for 1 atomic % of W, which indicates the formation of a Ni-W solid solution due to the substitution of nickel atoms by tungsten atoms of larger size.
