        4종(種)의 상치를 공시작물(供試作物)로 하여 수분(水分) 스트레스에 노출(露出)을 시켰을 때 총(總) 단백질(蛋白質)의 함량(含量)은 Flooding 처리시 그 감소율(減少率)이 더 크게 나타났으며 감소율(減少率)은 JCM이 가장 컸고, DCM이 가장 작았으며 품종간(品種間) 각 처리별(處理別) 차이(差異)가 크게나타났다. 총(總) 지질(脂質)의 함량(含量)은 감소율(減少率)이 CCM이 가장 컸고 JCM, DCM, DJM순(順)으로 감소(減少)하였다. 항산화효소(抗酸化酵素)인 Superoxide Dismutase(SOD)는 Catalase, Ascorbate Peroxidase의 활성도(活性度)는 전체적으로 감소(減少)하였으며 그 감소율(減少率)은 Catalase의 경우 처리별 JCM이 가장 크게 나타났고 DCM, DJM에서는 Flooding 처리시 효소의 활성도 변화가 더 크게 나타났다. Calatase의 활성도(活性度) 변화(變化)가 Ascorbate peroxidase의 활성도(活性度) 보다 감소율(減少率)이 더 크게 나타나 이는 Catalase가 Ascorbate peroxidase 보다 과산화수소(過酸化水素)와 더 직접적(直接的)으로 반응(反應)을 함을 나타낸다. Drought 처리기간별(處理期間別) 효소(酵素)의 활성도(活性度)는 생육시간(生育時間)이 길어질수록 감소(減少)하는 경향(傾向)이었으며 Catalase의 활성도(活性度)가 4일째 이후 가장 급격하게 감소(減少)하였다.

        본 실험은 NFT재배에서 배양액내 NO3-N과 NH4-N의 비율과 CO2 시용이 결구상추의 생육, 수량 및 품질에 미치는 영향을 구명하고자 실시하였는데, 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 배양액의 pH와 EC를 보정하지 않았을 경우, NO3-N:NH4-N이 100:0인 구에서의 pH는 점차적으로 증가하였고, NH4-N의 비율이 높을수록 급격히 저하하여 pH4.0까지 낮아졌다. 2. 배양액을 보정하지 않은 상태에서 NO3-N 및 NH4-N의 일 변화를 측정하여 본 결과, NO3-N의 흡수율은 NO3-N:NH4-N이 75:25, 50:50 처리구에서 각각 27.7%, 26.1% 였으나 NH4-N의 흡수율은 87.9%, 71.2%로 결구상추는 NH4-N을 우선적으로 흡수하였다. 3. 엽내 무기성분 함량에서 T-N는 NO3-N과 NH4-N 비율에 따른 큰 차이를 보이지 않았으나, P2O5, K2O, CaO, MgO는 생육이 가장 좋았던 CO2 1500ppm 시용과 NO3-N:NH4-N이 100:0에서 높게 나타났다. 4. CO2 시용에 의한 각 처리별 CO2 동화율도 수량과 같은 경향을 나타내어 CO2 1500ppm 시용과 NO3-N:NH4-N이 100:0 처리에서 가장 높았고, 배양액의 NH4-N비율이 높아질수록 현저히 떨어졌다. 5. 결구상추의 생육은 CO2 1500ppm 시용과 NO3-N:NH4-N이 100:0 처리에서 가장 좋았고, CO2 무처리구에 비하여 CO2 1500ppm 처리구에서 대체로 양호하였으나, NO3-N:NH4-N이 75:25, 50:50인 처리에서는 CO2 시용에 의한 수량의 증가가 경미하여 처리간 차이가 인정되지 않았다. 6. 엽중 nitrate함량은 배양액의 NO3-N함량과 비례하여 NO3-N:NH4-N 이 100:0에서 가장 높았고, vitamin C 함량은 NO3-N:NH4-N이 100:0인 처리에서 가장 낮고, NH4-N의 비율이 많을수록 높아졌다. CO2 시용에 의하여 엽중 질산염함량은 경감할 수는 있었으나 그 효과는 경미하였다.다.

        Production of lettuce under indoor cultivation is highly affected by light intensity. In this study, we used shade cloth (commercial black net) to examine the effect of these condition on growth without an associated yield penalty of container-grown lettuce. Four levels of shading treatments (0%, 35%, 55%, and 75% referred to as Cont., S35, S55, and S75 with respect to Cont.) and two lettuce varieties (red and blue) were evaluated. Variety-specific growth responses were observed with respect to different levels of shading treatments. High growth of red lettuce was occurred in Cont. treatment despite plant height and leaf length being higher than Cont. However, under 35% shading treatment blue lettuce was higher than in control plants. The highest root length was observed 0% shading (Cont.) of both varieties. These results reinforce the idea that blue lettuce is the better leafy vegetable rather than red lettuce for indoor cultivation related to lower light intensity environment conditions.

        Recently, as a natural substance has been emphasized interest in research to enhance the immune function. Green lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is a popular vegetable used fresh and it contains various phytochemicals and antioxidant compounds, and has been reported to have various physiological activities such as antibacterial, antioxidant, antitumor and anti-mutagenic. However, only a few studies have investigated on the mechanism of action of immune-enhancing activity of lettuce. Therefore, in this study, the immunomodulatory activities and potential mechanism of action of Green lettuce extracts (GLE) were evaluated in the murine macrophage cell line RAW264.7. GLE significantly increased NO levels by RAW264.7 cells, as well as expressions of immunomodulators such as iNOS, COX-2, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-12, TNF-α and MCP-1. Although GLE activated ERK1/2, p38, JNK and NF-κB, GLE-mediated expressions of immunomodulators was dependent on p38, JNK and NF-κB. In addition, TLR4 inhibition blocked GLE-mediated expressions of immunomodulators and activation of p38, JNK and NF-κB. Taken together, these results demonstrated that TLR4-MAPK/NF-κB signalling pathways participated in GLE-induced macrophage activation and GLE could be developed as a potential immunomodulating functional food.

        Lettuce is an important annual leafy vegetable and bitterness is its potent flavor character. Lettuce germplasm differ their phenotypic characters and sesquiterpene lactones (SLs) contents which are important for consumer’s acceptance. This study was carried out to evaluate the phenotypic characters and SLs contents in one hundred lettuce germplasm in Jeonju, Korea. Twenty-three agro-morphological (16 qualitative and 7 quantitative) traits and two SLs (lactucin and lactucopicrin) contents were studied in these germplasm. Germplasm exhibited the variation in qualitative and quantitative characters. Average plant weight was 423.9 g with a range from 116.0 to 905.0 g. Lactucin content was varied from 19.7 (IT 294226) to 194.4 ㎍/g (IT 294298) with an average concentration of 84.7 ㎍/g. Lactucopicrin ranged from 82.5 (IT 300134) to 2228.6 ㎍/g (IT 294210) with an average concentration of 586.3 ㎍/g. Total SLs content was ranged from 120.1 (IT 300134) to 2286.6 (IT 294210) ㎍/g with the average concentration of 671.0 ㎍/g. Significant (p≤0.05) differences were found between crisp head and butter head germplasm for lactucin, lactucopicrin and total SLs content. Crisp head germplasm revealed the highest average lactucin (112.9 ㎍/g), lactucopicrin (734.8 ㎍/g) and total SLs content (847.7 ㎍/g). Crisp head and leafy type germplasm exhibited more total SLs content (847.7 and 744.7 ㎍/g, respectively) than cos (524.9 ㎍/g) and butter head type (519.4 ㎍/g). Principal component analyses of the quantitative traits indicated that the first principal component axis accounted more than 91% of the total variation. This study revealed the ample genetic variation in the agro-morphological traits and SLs contents to support the selection for improved lettuce varieties.

        비소 함유 골재를 토양개량제로 사용하였을 경우 광미에 포함된 유효태 또는 광물로 존재하는 비소가 용출되어 식물 생육에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위해 실험 한 결과를 요약 하면 다음과 같다. 1. 중세사에서 자갈크기의 유비철석 입자시료에서는 비 소가 약 95.28 mg kg-1 정도 함유된 있으나 밭토양 시 료에서는 비소가 없는 것으로 조사되었다. 2. 상추 재배토양에 함유된 양을 기준으로 생물학적 이용 가능 비소와 그리고 상추로 전이된 비소의 양의 비율 을 비교한 결과 토양으로부터 생물학적 이용 가능 비 소 형태로 전환된 비소의 비율은 최저 2.20%에서 최 대 3.31%로 조사되었다. 3. 상대적 생물학적 이용가능 비소와 상추내 비소 지수는 정의 상관관계를 보이고 있는 반면 이의 비소 지수가 증가함에 따라 상추의 엽장, 엽폭, 엽수, 생체중과 건 물중 모두 반비례로 감소하는 것으로 조사되었다. 4. 입자직경이 토양보다 큰 모래 또는 자갈크기의 비소를 포함한 자갈이 혼합량이 증가됨에 따라 식물가용수분 함량이 감소될 뿐만 아니라 상추가 자라는 동안 비소 를 포함된 유비철석입자부터 비소가 토양내로 용존되 어 작물체내로 전이기 증가되어 상추 엽장, 엽폭 엽수, 생체중, 그리고 건물중에 영향을 준 것으로 판단한다.

        Seed & Variety Service for Plant Variety Protection (PVP). We previously constructed DNA profile database for identifying 159 lettuce varieties using 60 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. In this study, we selected optimum markers from previously applied markers and new SSR markers for the standardization of DNA profile database of 65 commercial lettuce varieties containing 18 PVP varieties distributed in Korea. Twenty-eight SSR markers from 60 SSR markers were selected for characterization with 65 commercial lettuce varieties according to the reproducibility, polymorphism, band pattern of marker and easiness of scoring. Out of 156 SSR primers, we additionally selected 11 new SSR primer pairs showed polymorphisms between 8 varieties and repetitive reproducibility on capillary electrophoresis system. Totally 127 polymorphic amplified fragments were obtained using 39 SSR markers. Two to seven SSR alleles were detected for each locus with an average of 3.3 alleles per locus. Average polymorphism information content was 0.517, ranging from 0.281 to 0.771. Genetic distance of clusters ranged from 0.29 to 0.96 by unweighted pair-group method with arithmetical average based on Jaccard’s distance coefficients. A total of 65 commercial lettuce varieties were discriminated by 39 SSR marker genotypes. These SSR profile database developed will be continually characterized for the standardization of DNA profiles for lettuce commercial varieties

        The objective of this study was carried out to elucidate the effect of LEDs (light emitting diodes) irradiation in relation to early growth and inorganic elements in leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. ‘Chung Chi Ma’). In morphological changes of leaves, shoot elongation and hypocotyl length showed poor growth in red light irradiation, while the red+blue light irradiation induced shorter plant height and much greater leaf numbers resulting in increased fresh weight. In change of the Hunter's color and SPAD values, lettuce seedlings grown under in red+blue and fluorescent light irradiation had a higher a* value, otherwise SPAD values were not changed in these light irradiations. Interestingly, relative chlorophyll contents showed 1.8 times increased redness in the treatment of red+blue light irradiation. Inorganic element (N, Ca, Mg, Mn, and Fe) and ascorbic acid contents were increased in lettuce plants grown under LEDs light irradiation compared to those of lettuce grown under the fluorescent light which showed higher P and Mn contents. In conclusion, it is considered that red+blue light irradiation which stimulates growth and higher nutrient uptake in leaf lettuce could be employed in containers equipped with LEDs.

        We collected and examined germplasm resources of lettuces, edible chrysanthemums and mallows for organic farmers. We found that 3 genotypes (OL-51, OL-52, and OL- 63) are suitable for organic cultivation. The main use of treatment for grey mold among eco-friendly pest control methods is helpful to increase efficiency of seedgathe끼ng after collecting and evaluating a total of 64 kinds of lettuces- collected 43 South Korea local varieties, 8 kinds cultivated by the Highland Agriculture Research Center, 4 kinds of cultivated lettuces, and 9 kinds for sales- to choose approp꺼ate kinds of lettuces for organic cultivation in South Korea. We chose those with more than 300 leaves (OC-18, OC-44, and OC-51) after evaluation of yield characteristics of a total of 62 edible chrysanthemums. We covered each genotype of seed of edible chrysanthemums when gathe끼ng the seeds by ourselves so as not to decrease the purity of each genotype. We chosed OM-38, OM-39, and OM-40 for their yield performance and germination rates among the total 41 genotypes of mallows. We selected 9 genotypes of lettuces, editable chrysanthemums and mallows with possibility of organic cultivation and found that they can be used permanently through self seed-gathering on organic farms.

        Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is known to contain water-soluble substances that improve antioxidant status due to the richness in antioxidants. Greenhouse experiment was carried out under different shading conditions during spring lettuce growing season. Shade significantly reduced shoot weight, number of leaves and chlorophyll content, while it increased shoot length of lettuce plants. The antioxidant potential of the individual fraction was in order of n-butanol 〉 ethyl acetate 〉 water 〉 n-hexane fraction, although was less than that of commonly used antioxidants, BHT and ascorbic acid. Fractions from lettuce plants dose-dependently increased DPPH free radical scavenging activity, in vitro test. By means of HPLC analysis, BuOH fraction of cultivar 'Hwahyang' (57.93 mg 100g-1) had the highest amount of antioxidant chi orogenic acid. Shading treatment increased average amount of chlorogenic acid of all cultivars in BuoH, EtOAc, hexane and water fractions by 33, 120, 144, and 58%, respectively. These results suggest that lettuce plants had potent antioxidant activity, and their activities were differently exhibited depending on cultivar and fraction.

        Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is known to contain water-soluble substances that are biologically active. Aqueous or methanol extracts and residues from leaves of lettuce plants were assayed to determine their allelopathic effects, and the causative allelochemicals from fractions were quantified by means of HPLC analysis and bioassayed. Extracts from oven-dried leaf samples were more phytotoxic than those from freeze-dried samples. Leaf extracts of 40 g L-1 were completely inhibitory on root growth of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), while root growths of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and soybean (Glycine max L.) were less sensitive. Early seedling growth of both alfalfa and barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) was significantly reduced by methanol leaf extracts. The major allelopathic substances analyzed by HPLC were coumarin, trans-cinnamic acid, o-coumaric acid, p-coumaric acid and chlorogenic acid. Of them p-coumaric acid was found as the greatest amount (8.9 mg 100 g-1 ) in the EtOAc fraction; only coumarin was found in all the fractions. Hexane and EtOAc fractions of L. sativa reduced alfalfa root growth more than did BuOH and water fractions. These results suggest that lettuce had potent herbicidal activity, and that its activity differed depending on type and amount of causative compounds by fraction.

        Nitrate in edible vegetables is converted to nitrite by nitrate reductase(NR) and/or bacteria in intestines. Nitrite and amino, in the intestine of some animals and human, bind to form nitrosamine, which is toxic and known as carcinogen. This study was carried out to examine the effect of added chlorides and their concentrations on growth, yield and nitrate content in leaf lettuce plants in hydroponics. Seeds of lettuce cv, "Samsunjokchukmyon" were planted on April 29, and seedlings were planted on June 2, and were cultured until July 5 in 1998. KCI and CaCl₂ were used as chloride source and their concentrations were 1, 2 and 4 me/L, respectively, in the lettuce standard nutrient solution for National Horticultural Research Institute(NHRI). Completely randomized design with 3 replications was used. Nitrate content and NR activity were measured 2 and 5 weeks after planting(WAP). The obtained results were summarized as the follows : Leaf weight per plant was difference from harvest dates and treatments, but total leaf weight was not significantly different among treatments. Number of leaves was higher in KCI 2 me/L, CaCl₂1 me/L and control at 2 WAP than the others, and was higher in KCI 1 me/L, and control at 3 WAP than others, and was higher in control at 5 WAP. Total number of harvested leaves was the highest in control with 14, which followed by KCI 2 me/L and CaCl₂1 me/L. Nitrate content was decreased by addition of chloride in nutrient solution. Nitrate content in the 3rd and 9th leaves was significantly decreased. NR activity was higher in control and CaCl₂ addition treatments, while KCI addition treatments reduced NR activity. However, no direct relationship with nitrate was observed. Growth characteristics such leaf length and leaf width were not significantly influenced by chloride addition.
