A 10-year-old intact female Cocker Spaniel weighing 15.3 kg presented with dysbasia. The dog had hyperglycemia and glucosuria at presentation. Neurological examination and magnetic resonance imaging on the following day indicated the onset of cervical disk disease. Four days later, the patient returned due to sudden vomiting and anorexia with severe dehydration. Abnormal laboratory findings included severe hyperglycemia with ketonuria. Plasma progesterone concentration was very high at presentation. She was hospitalized for critical care, and insulin administration with fluid therapy was initiated. Mean blood glucose concentration showed a gradual decline, and hyperglycemia with glucosuria disappeared four days after initiation of insulin therapy. This case demonstrated that high plasma progesterone concentration during diestrus can contribute to development of diabetes mellitus in intact female dogs.

A five-month-old female pomeranian dog (weighing 0.95 kg) with a history of cyanosis, exercise intolerance, and delayed growth presented to Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Gyeongsang National University. Findings on diagnostic imaging studies showed a dextropositioned and over-riding aorta, pulmonic stenosis, ventricular septal defect, right ventricular hypertrophy, and atrial septal defect. Based on the diagnostic findings, the dog was diagnosed as a case of tetralogy of Fallot with atrial septal defect (pentalogy of Fallot).

The synovial tissues are a valuable MSCs source for cartilage tissue engineering because these cells are easily obtainable by the intra-articular biopsy during diagnosis. In this study, we isolated and characterized the canine MSCs derived from synovial fluid of female and male donors. Synovial fluid was flushed with saline solution from pre and post-puberty male (cM1-sMSC and cM2-sMSC) and female (cF1-sMSC and cF2-sMSC) dogs, and cells were isolated and cultured in advanced-DMEM (A-DMEM) supplemented with 10% FBS in a humidified 5% atmosphere at . The cells were evaluated for the expression of the early transcriptional factors, such as Oct3/4, Nanog and Sox2 by RT-PCR. The cells were induced under conditions conductive for adipogenic, osteogenic, and chondrogenic lineages, then evaluated by specific staining (Oil red O, von Kossa, and Alcian Blue staining, respectively) and analyzed for lineage specific markers by RT-PCR. All cell types were positive for alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity and early transcriptional factors (Oct3/4 and Sox2) were also positively detected. However, Nanog were not positively detected in all cells. Further, these MSCs were observed to differentiate into mesenchymal lineages, such as adipocytes (Oil red O staining), osteocytes (von Kossa staining), and chondrocytes (Alcian Blue staining) by cell specific staining. Lineage-specific genes (osteocyte; osteonectin and Runx2, adipocytes; PRAR-, FABP and LEP, and chondrocytes; collagen type-2 and Sox9) were also detected in all cells. In this study, we successfully established synovial fluid derived mesenchymal stem cells from female and male dogs, and determined their basic biological properties and differentiation ability. These results suggested that synovial fluid is a valuable stem cell source for cartilage regeneration therapy, and it is easily accessible from osteoarthritic knee.

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of acteoside (the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor) on the SCNT efficiency with adult fibroblasts in dog. Canine adult fibroblasts were obtained from muscle and cell cycle of fibroblasts was synchronized by culturing to confluency, serum starvation and treating with 30 μM acteoside for 48 h. Cell cycle stages, cell cytotoxicity (apoptosis) and, prduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were analyzed using flow cytometry. The canine cells, prepared by confluent-cell culture or treating with 30 μM acteoside for 48 h, were injected into enucleated in vivo matured oocytes, the couplets were electrical fused and activated by calcium ionomycin. SCNT embryos using acteoside-treated fibroblasts were surgically transferred into oviducts of estrus cycle synchronized recipient dogs. In cell cycle synchronization (G0/G1), there was no significant difference between serum starvations (83.9%) and acteoside treated groups (81.3%) that were higher than confluent group (78.5%). In production of apoptosis, confluent and acteoside treated groups (4.3 and 4.5%, respectively) were generated less than serum starvation group (21.8%). In case of ROS, serum starvation group was induced a significantly higher than other groups. After synchronization of the donor cell cycle, either confluent or acteoside treated, cells were placed with enucleated in vivo-matured dog oocytes, fused by electric stimulation, activated, and transferred into naturally estrus-synchronized surrogates. Fusion and cleavage rate of acteoside treated group were 64.1 and 41.5%, which were higher than those of confluent group (53.9 and 20.6%, respectively). The reconstructed embryo development rates to 4-cell and 8-cell in acteoside treated group were 29.5 and 14.8%, respectively, while confluent group showed 11.1 and 3.2%, respectively. Total 54 SCNT embryos using acteoside-treated fibroblasts were transferred into oviducts of 2 recipient dogs and one recipient finally delivered one puppy, whereas din`t detected pregnancy on transfer of cloned embryos reconstructed with confluent cells in 6 surrogate dogs. In conclusion, the results of the current study demonstrated that canine fibroblasts could be successfully arrested at the G0/G1 stage with reduced the formation of ROS and apoptosis after acteoside treatment. Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is defined as a gradual, interstitial fibrous disease of the lung parenchyma. PF causes collapse of the lung lobe, which can lead to lung lobe torsion of the other side. A 14-year-old male Pekinese dog was referred to the Veterinary Medical Center, Chungbuk National University. The chief complaint was acute dyspnea. The dog had a history of chronic cough, which lasted for 18 months, and the cough had recently deteriorated. Tachypnea was observed on physical examination. As a result of thoracic radiographs, ultrasonography, and computed tomography, lung lobe torsion and collapse were diagnosed. A postmortem examination revealed lung lobe torsion of the left cranial lobe and carnification of the right cranial lobe. Histologically, severe and diffuse interstitial fibrosis with distortion of alveolar architecture and severe congestion and/or hemorrhage were observed in the right cranial lobe and left cranial lobe, respectively. Although the cause of pulmonary fibrosis was undetermined, this case showed a typical lung lobe torsion caused by pulmonary fibrosis.

This study was to determine some appropriate models which account for attitudes toward practice of consuming dog (ACD) as a food and as a companion animal. Two models, one for males and the other females, were found from 670 community-dwelling respondents of the Gwangju Metropolitan area who aged 17～66 years. Age, keeping dog or willing to keep dog, and frequency of consuming dog as a food (FD) were exogenous variables in the models while attitudes toward companion animal were a mediating variable. The two models were slightly different, but the most influential variable accounting for the ACD was the FD. The findings of this study on the ACD were discussed in two dimensions of affect and utility which were motivational attitudes to animal. People who are against consuming dog meat as food would think of all dogs as only affectionate objects, and their points of view were discussed in the context of both keeping dog and restricting dog meat consumption. On the other hand, people who are for consuming dog meat would think of dogs as either affectionate or utilized objects, and their points of view were discussed in the context of halving dogs into companion dog and edible dog.

Canine heartworm disease is typically characterized by the presence of heartworms in the pulmonary artery and, to a lesser degree, the right ventricle. Systemic arterial dirofilariasis is an unusual manifestation of heartworm disease of dogs that results from aberrant migration of Dirofilaria immitis into the peripheral arterial circulation. A three-year-old Jindo dog was referred to the Veterinary Medical Center because of hindlimb lameness, paresthesia of hindlimbs, and interdigital ischemic necrosis. Angiography and ultrasonography were performed, resulting in diagnosis of heartworm infestation. In necropsy, entangled heartworms were present throughout the body, including lungs, kidney, small intestinal lumen, and arteries, in addition to the right ventricle and pulmonary artery. Histologically, lung showed adult heart worms in vessels, organized thrombotic vessels, and interstitial pneumonia featuring type II pneumocyte hyperplasia, thickened alveolar wall, and compressed alveolar spaces. Chronic parenchymal lesions, such as focal or diffuse necrosis, fibrosis, and dystrophic calcification were remarkable in liver and kidney. The current case showed a typical canine systemic heartworm disease caused by aberrant migration of Dirofilaria immitis.

A nine-month-old male Pekingese weighing 5.7 kg was admitted to the Veterinary Medical Center at Chungbuk National University with a history of acute nonambulatory tetraparesis after minor trauma. A diagnosis of atlantoaxial instability with a dens axis fracture was based on examination of survey spinal radiographs and was confirmed during surgery. A modified ventral fixation technique using cortical screws was used for stabilization of the atlantoaxial joint. Serial evaluation based on radiographic and neurologic assessment was performed eight weeks after surgery. Symptoms of tetraparesis disappeared gradually, and arthrodesis of the atlantoaxial joint using a ventral fixation technique has maintained stable fixation.

A six-year-old male Pekinese dog was referred to the Veterinary Medical Center, Chungbuk National University because of intermittent vomiting, anorexia, alopecia, and pruritus. Generalized alopecia, pigmentation, and papular erythema in the skin were observed on physical examination. Hematological studies indicated a severe pancytopenia and hypoalbuminemia. A hormone analysis indicated a hyperestrogenemia. A circumscribed mass, measuring approximately 3-4 cm in diameter, was observed on abdominal radiographs. Grossly, the cryptorchid testis was enlarged by a firm and white spherical mass, measuring approximately 3 cm in diameter, which, on its cut surface, was creamy white with hemorrhage. The normal scrotal testis was markedly atrophic and soft. Histologically, the intra-abdominal cryptorchid testis contained abundant fibrous tissue stroma and the stromal tissues were arranged in a tubular pattern in which the neoplastic cells tended to palisade. The cells had poor and pale eosinophilic cytoplasm streaming into the center of the tubules. The nuclei were round to oval and tended to be in a basilar location. Regions of hyperplasia and marked squamous metaplasia were observed in many areas of the prostate. Based on the histological findings, we were able to identify these masses as Sertoli cell tumors, and made a final diagnosis as Sertoli cell tumors through immunohistochemistry methods using inhibin-α, vimentin, and neuron-specific enolase.

This study was performed to investigate the characteristics within ages and freezing tolerance of spermatozoa in Jindo Dog. Experimental animals were selected 12 herds within 1～8 year’s old and collected semen for 2 times in a week. Collected semen was evaluated whole volume and sperm number with CASA system (SIAS, Medical Supply, Korea). Then seminal plasma were separated and diluted with modified Tris-egg yolk extender and added 4, 6 and 8% glycerol for 4 times to final concentration and equilibrated for 1.5 hrs. Before and after freezing, equilibrated semen were evaluated the survival rates. Total volume of sperm at 1～2 year old group is as 5.2×108 cells/ ml largest and there were no significance among groups. The motility of 1～2 year old group is highest as 90.9% and there were significance among groups. Abnormal sperm showed similar among groups. The survival rate in terms of pre-freezing and post-freezing were decreased all levels of glycerol and reveled 87.0% to 64.5% in 4%, 87.5% to 51.9% in 6% and 73.4% to 29.7% in 8%, there were significant difference among the groups (p<0.05). These results suggest that the optimal sperm-freezing methods in Jindo Dog are utilized with modified Tris egg-yolk extender with 4% glycerol and were improve the reproductive activity by these methods.

This studies were conducted to investigate the survival rate of frozen-thawed spermatozoa of Jindo Dog by monosaccharide and freezing rates. Experimental animals were prepared 12 males within 1~8 year's old and collected once in a couple of weeks by digital manuplation methods. Collected semen was diluted 1:1 with Tris-egg yolk extender and added 4, 6 or 8% of glycerol and none, 4 mM glucose or 4 mM fructose as cryoprotectant and was equilibrated for 2 hrs in . In monosaccharide groups, the freezing rate was 5 cm-5 min. above . The survival rates without monosaccharide were , , in 4, 6 or 8% glycerol, respectively. In addition of glucose, the survival rates were , , in 4, 6 or 8% glycerol, respectively and in fructose, were , , in 4, 6 or 8% glycerol, respectively. There showed significantly different between glycerol groups and monosaccharides groups (p<0.05). The survival rates of freezing rate in 5 cm-5 min. group was , , and in 10 cm-10 min. group was , , in 4, 6 or 8% glycerol, respectively. There were significantly different between freezing rates (p<0.05). These results suggest that the addition of fructose with 6%-glycerol and slow freezing improve the survival of frozen-thawed sperm in Jindo Dog.

Cutaneous vasculitis is an inflammatory necrotizing disease of the blood vessel walls. In most cases, the etiology is due to immune-complex disease from type III hypersensitivity. Clinical signs include swelling, erythema, purpura, erythematous plaques, ulceration, and necrosis. Clinical lesions may be localized to distal extremities or areas of less extensive collateral circulation. In this case, history, physical examination, laboratory findings, cytology, histopathologic examination, and immunohistochemistry might aid in differentiation of a clinically similar disease. Consequently, this case was diagnosed as cutaneous vasculitis and treated with ointment containing corticosteroid and antibiotics over a period of two weeks. After treatment, all of the clinical lesions had disappeared.

A ten-year-old female Yorkshire terrier was presented to Veterinary Medical Center, Chungbuk National University with signs of anorexia and cough. Blood electrolytes, complete blood count (CBC), and hormone analysis revealed mild elevated lipase and bile acid, moderate hypercholesterolemia and severe elevated alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphate (ALP), and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT). Survey radiographs revealed the potbelly-shaped abdomen, generalized hepatomegaly, and round and smooth marginated mass in right upper abdomen. On ultrasonography, enlarged gallbladder with combination of kiwifruit-like and stellate pattern consistent with gallbladder mucocele was revealed. On day 113 after diagnosis of gallbladder mucocele, free fluid and the hyperechoic structure mainly in the dorsolateral region of the gallbladder was found, which was consistent with gallbladder rupture. Cholecystectomy was performed after gallbladder rupture.

동물병원에서 행해진 진료현황, 총 41,305건에 대해 WHO의 질병분류법(ICD)에 따라 검증한 결과 예방의학이 42.2%, 피부질환이 16.4%, 소화기계가 12.0%, 耳科가 8.5%, 호흡기계 질환이 4.3%이었다. 내과질환에서는 내원한 진료 중에서 소화기계 질환이 52.9% 호흡기계 질환이 18.9%, 순환기질환이 13.2%, 종양이 4.4%순이었다. 피부질환 총 6,774건 중에서 농피증이 50%, 외부기생충증이 12.2%, 피부사상균증이 11.0%, 알레르기성 피부병이 9.8%이었다. 동물병원의 수입을 진료부분과 용품 판매, 애견 미용 등 크게 3부분으로 구분하였을 때 전체 매출의 71.6%가 진료부분, 용품의 판매가 16.9%, 애견 미용이 11.5%를 차지하였다. 동물병원의 홍보 형태는 인터넷 웹사이트를 통한 홍보가 47%로 가장 많았으며, 지역광고지가 23.5%, 전단지와 전화통신 서비스가 11.8% 순이었다. 동물병원의 인적구성에서는 수의사가 절반정도인 45.5%를 차지하였으며 전문적인 교육과정을 거친 수의테크니션은 없었다. 동물병원의 시설구획에서는 평균 진료실은 2.7실, 입원실은 1.7실, 격리입원실은 0.5실이었고 이외 수술실과 방사선촬영실을 병용하는 동물병원도 있었고 일반 처치실의 시설은 미흡하였다.

A 14-year-old intact female, mixed dog was presented with hematuria and strangury. Mass in the abdominal cavity was seen on radiographs and ultrasound. On the cytological examination in the urethra, clusters of pleomorphic epithelial cell were found. Tissues of the urethra and the urinary bladder were obtained at the time laparotomy and determined the extent of the mass. Transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the urinary bladder was found in histopathologic characteristics. Urinary diversion after removal of a complete full section of the TCC in bladder wall was performed. Piroxicam, as a medical therapy for TCC, was orally administrated. Surgical operation and chemotherapy were selected with the goal of maintaining and improving quality of life.
