To control Thrips tabaci in Korean leek and green onion which grow at vinyl house in IKSAN, Jeollabuk-do, the non-treatment was set as negative control. In general treatment group, 120 mesh gauze was installed on the side window after planting(May, 2nd) and, in spring, Orius strigicollis (1.0/m2) was grazed 3 times every 7 days from mid of May which is early development stage and In the mid of June, which is the peak stage, plant extracts were sprayed one time. In autumn, O. strigicollis was grazed 3 times every 7 days from mid of September which is early development stage, and in the mid of October, which is the peak stage, plant extracts were sprayed one time. The result shows that the leaf damage ratio was decreased by 22% in Korean leek and by 27% in green onion compared to the untreatment. And the control value of Thrips tabaci shows 78.7% in korean leak and 90.6% in green onion. The density control effect of Thrips tabaci was significantly controlled under max 6.2/plant in general treatment group compared max 25/plant in the untreatment and this result was similar in green onion. The yields by general treatment was increased by 85% in Korean leek and 56% in green onion, compared with non-treatment yields, which was 900kg/10a in Korean leek and 1,287kg/10a in green onion.

This study was conducted to develop economic injury level (EIL) and economic threshold (ET) of onion thrips, Thrips tabaci on welsh onion (Allium fistulosum L. var). The changes of welsh onion biomass and T. tabacci density were investigated after introductions of T. tabacci at different densities and days: By the results of the experiment in the early welsh onion cultivation periods (30d after transplanting), the biomass of welsh onion significantly decreased with increasing the initial inoculated density of T. tabacci. The relationship between cumulative insect days (CID) and yield loss (%) of welsh onion was well described by a nonlinear logistic equation. Using the estimated equation, EIL and ET of T. tabacci on welsh onion were estimated at 24 and 20 CID per plant, respectively. By the results of the experiment in the late cultivation periods of welsh onion (about 120d after transplanting), the welsh onion biomass was also significantly different inoculation thrips densities to welsh onion. The EIL and ET were calculated as 35 and 28 thrips per welsh onion plant. Until a more elaborate EIL-model is developed, the present result may be useful for T. tabacci management during the cultivations of welsh onion.

Chrysanthemum flower model trap developed by modifying an artificial yellow chrysanthemum flower was reported to be more attractive to flower thrips than a commercial yellow sticky trap. The installation of the traps (20 traps per 50 m2 plot), especially, reduced the seasonal populations of Frankliniella intonsa Trybom (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) on strawberry flowers in greenhouse by 82% compared to the untreated control. In this study, we tested if the installation of the flower model traps can reduce thrips population on a red pepper field located in Seokdong, Andong. The pepper field was treated two times with pesticides during the period of experiment. The traps were installed in plant canopy at different densities (0, 5, 10, 20 traps) in 20 plots (3×5 m2 each) using a completely randomized design. Population of thrips was examined on the collected pepper flowers from 1 July to 29 July in 2009. Thrips found on the flowers were all F. intonsa. Significance effect of treatment and sampling date was found from repeated-measure analysis of variance. The highest density of traps significantly reduced female and male F. intonsa population by 60% and 46% compared to the control, respectively. However, no difference in immature population was found among the treatments. These results indicate flower model trap can be an additional tool for the management of flower thrips on field red pepper.

Occurrence of Japanese gall-forming thrips, Ponticulothrips diospyrosi was surveyed from 143 orchards at 11 cities or counties in 6 provinces, Korea from 2008 to 2009. Occurrence of P. diospyrosi was not observed from Jeju (4 persimmon orchards) in Jeju-do and Wanju (12 persimmon orchards) in Jeollabuk-do. However, P. diospyrosi occurred newly in the orchards in Sanchung, Gyeongsangnam-do and in Gangreung, Gangwon-do. Rate of damaged orchards by P. diospyrosi in Gumi, Mungyeong, Sangju and Euseong in Gyeongsangbuk-do (73.3%) was higher than that of in Gyeongsangnam-do or Youngdong areas in Chungcheongbuk-do. A maximum rate of damaged trees by P. diospyrosi was 23.5% in Gumi, while the damage was lower in Sancheong and Jinju representing 0.2 and 1.6%, respectively. Rate of damaged leaves by P. diospyrosi was the highest in Sangju (0.12%). P. diospyrosi occurred between N35°07′50″ and 35°51′24″ and between E127°38′36″ to 128°53′02″. Persimmon orchards close to mountain were more damaged by P. diospyrosi. Edge parts of persimmon orchards were more damaged by P. diospyrosi than inner parts, especially in orchards close to mountain. Also, the middle and lower parts of tree canopy were more damaged by P. diospyrosi than the upper parts of canopy.

In the Old World, there are many bamboo-inhabiting phlaeothripine thrips mainly from the tropics and subtropics. Bamboosiella Ananthakrishnan and Podothrips Hood belonging to the subfamily Phlaeothripinae are well known genera in the East Asia. It is interesting that some of them are carnivorous and have the bodies bicolorous, usually the head, thorax and some of distal abdominal segments brown and the remaining abdominal segments yellow. In Korean peninsular, only two species, B. longiosanum Shin & Woo 1999 and P. sasa Okajima 1995, have been recorded from bamboo habitat. During the study of thysanopteran fauna, a newly recorded bamboo-inhabiting thrips P. odonaspicola (Kurosawa, 1937) is found from southern parts of Korea. The species have body bicolored brown and yellow, especially showing anteromedian brown marking on each of yellow abdominal segments II to V. It is known to occur under bamboo leaf sheaths and be a predator of Odonaspis secreatus Cockerell (Coccidae) in the temperate region (Okajima, 2006). In this study, taxonomic information on P. odonaspicola are presented with photos of specimens and the Korean bamboo-inhabiting thrips are briefly reviewed.

With the comparison of native Orius strigicollis (Poppius) to European O. laevigatus (Fieber), we investigated biological characteristics such as developmental period, fecundity, life span, predation ability, and augmentation after release. Experiments were carried out at five temperature condition, 15℃, 20℃, 25℃, 30℃, and 35℃. In the case of O. strigicollis, egg period was 3.1~14.9 days (hatchability: 46.7~88.2%), and developmental period of nymphs was 9.4~42.8 days (survival rate: 2.4~96.5%). Fecundity at each temperature was 28.1, 107.9, 123.6, 127.3, and 18.1, respectively. Life span of adults was 63.4, 40.1, 22.1, 18.3, and 11.0 days, respectively. In the case of O. laevigatus, egg period was 3.1~13.5 days (hatchability: 65.0~89.9%), and developmental period of nymphs was 9.3~42.0 (survival rate: 4.3~80.6%) days. Fecundity at each temperature was 101.8, 218.6, 224.5, 219.5, and 15.7. Life span of adults was 70.6, 66.4, 32.6, 34.5, and 7.3 days, respectively. In long-day condition (16L:8D), fecundity of O. strigicollis and O. laevigatus was 105.8 (18℃)~142.4 (25℃) and 109.5 (18℃)~191.5 (25℃), respectively. In short-day condition (10L:14D), fecundity of them was 1.0 (18℃)~31.8 (25℃) and 63.0 (18℃)~198.8 (25℃), respectively. Daily prey consumption of second instar Frankliniella occidentalis was 14.3 and 10.9, respectively. In greenhouse, density of O. strigicollis begins to increase from mid May and peaked about early July (1.8 individual/flower), while that of O. laevigatus begins to increase from mid March and peaked about early June (6.6 individual/flower).

This study was carried out to evaluate toxicities of two formulations (microemulsion, ME and wettable powder, WP) for acetamiprid+etofenprox against aphids (Aphis gossypii), thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) on the cucumber greenhouse and whiteflies (Trialeurodes vaporariorum and Bemisia tabaci Qbiotype) on the tomato greenhouse. The activities of two formulations were evaluated by testing residual effect and toxicities against eggs, nymphs and adults of whiteflies in the laboratory, and control effect in the greenhouse against whiteflies, aphids and thrips. All trials were tested at the recommended concentration(RC) and a half concentration of RC of each formulation. In the laboratory trials against eggs and nymphs of whiteflies, the effect of ME was more effective than that of WP and showed more than 80% ovicidal activities, and 40%~60% larvicidal activities on the 3rd instars nymph of whiteflies at the recommended and its half concentrations. On the residual effect against the adults of the two whitefly species, WP formulation was more effective than ME and showed more than 70% mortality at the 5th day after treatments of recommended concentrations. In the field trials, the effects of ME against whiteflies and thrips were more excellent than those of WP. On the other hand, the effect of WP against aphids was more excellent. These results indicate that the formulation of insecticide can be played an important role in the control strategy of the pest in field.

Western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis(Perg.), is one of the major pests of lettuce, Lactuca sativa. To develop the economic thresholds for western flower thrips on lettuce, the thrips was inoculated into two types of lettuce, green deeply lobed leaf lettuce which was harvested every week and red frilled & crinkled leaf lettuce which was harvested one time, with a density of 0, 1, 3, 7, 10 thrips per one lettuce after planting 1 week and 3 weeks at the plastic house in 2006, and 0, 1, 3, 5, 7 thrips per one lettuce after planting 1 week in 2007. There was close correlation between the initial thrips density and the marketable quantity of lettuce : y = -155.36x + 3564.7, r2=0.9724('06), y = -167.82x + 3474.5, r2=0.8897('07) in the green deeply lobed leaf lettuce inoculated the thrips after planting 1 week, y = -109.65x + 3549.1, r2=0.9384('06) in the green deeply lobed leaf lettuce inoculated the thrips after planting 3 weeks, y = -197.09x + 3334.9, r2=0.9707('06), y = -244.08x + 3425.9, r2=0.8914('07) in the red frilled & crinkled leaf lettuce inoculated the thrips after planting 1 week, y = -101.07x + 3457.6, r2=0.7334('06) in the red frilled & crinkled leaf lettuce inoculated the thrips after planting 3 weeks. The economic threshold for western flower thrips on lettuce was ranged 0.20~0.30 thrips per one lettuce in the blue type lettuce and 0.14~0.33 thrips per one lettuce in the red type lettuce.

Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is economically important pest of various crops causing damage through direct feeding and transmitting tospoviruses. In a previous study differential responses of the thrips to various geometrical patterns of yellow sticky card were found. Therefore, in this study, we compared the behavioral responses of the thrips to visual and olfactory cues in cylindrical black box and Y-tube olfactometer, respectively. Multiple or pair wise choice tests were carried out among/between six geometrical patterns of yellow color paper and artificial flowers. The thrips preferred circular shape to other geometrical patterns in multiple choice test. In pair wise choice test between three geometrical patterns, i.e., circular, rectangle, and modified circular, and artificial strawberry flowers, the thrips showed preference to the yellow artificial flower than any other cues. The thrips resided on the yellow artificial flower almost 4 times more than other patterns. In Y-tube olfactometer test, higher number of the thrips chose the arm with p-anisaldehyde and artificial flower compared to the arm with only the artificial flower. Higher number of the thrips also chose the arm containing both visual and real flower odor as compared to arm with the only real flower odor. The potentials and application of these results in the development of attraction traps for the thrips management have been discussed.

The damaged area by and the distribution of Japanese gall forming thrips, Ponticulothrips diospyrosi Haga et Okajima (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae) in Korea were surveyed based on the answers of persimmon growers to questionnaire. Seasonal occurrence of each developmental stage was estimated by monitoring the individuals in damaged leaves, and effect of trap site and side of sticky board were studied by yellow sticky traps at three sweet persimmon orchards in Gimhae and Jinju (orchards A and B), Gyeongnam province, Korea in 2005. P. diospyrosi gave damage to astringent per-simmon as well as sweet one. The damaged area of persimmon orchard has sharply increased since 2000, reaching 446 ㏊ nationwide, Gyeongnam province was most severely damaged, followed by Gyeongbuk and Jeonnam provinces. Most of the farmers answered that they sprayed insecticides and removed the damaged leaves to control P. diospyrosi. The overwintered adults were observed in the damaged-rolled leaves from mid May and the 1st generation adults from early-mid June. No thrips were observed in the damaged leaves after mid July. Yellow sticky trap data showed that peak adults catch of the overwintered generation was mid May, and that of the 1st generation was mid-late June in Gimhae and late June in Jinju. Sticky traps set at orchard-pine forest border caught significantly more number of the 1st generation adults than those at the orchard center, even though timing of peak catches was not different between the two sites. There was a tendency of more catches on the side of sticky trap facing pine forest than the other side facing orchard center, even though the catches on both sides showed no statistical difference.

Effectiveness of Orius strigicollis (Poppius) and Amblyseius cucumeris (Oudemans) as natural enemies against thrips were evaluated on greenhouse green pepper, sweet pepper and cucumber respectively. Control efficacy was calculated by the formula, (Dcontrol - Dtreatment)/Dcontrol × 100, where Dcontrol is the average density of thrips on the plots in which any natural enemy was not released and Dtreatment is the average density of thrips on the plots in which natural enemies were released respectively. As a result, control efficacies of O. strigicollis against Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) on green pepper and sweet pepper were 14.3~99.5% and 21.6~98.3%, respectively. In addition, control efficacy of it against Thrips palmi Kany on cucumber was 61.2-74.4%. Control efficacies of A. cucumeris against F. occidentalis on green pepper and sweet pepper were 12.9~38.3% and 17.1~87.0%, respectively. Control efficacy of it against T. palmi on cucumber was 90.4~97.4%. Field evaluation showed that the prompt applications of natural enemies were effective to reduce the density of thrips. In detail, to control F. occidentalis effectively on green pepper and sweet pepper in spring season, five to six individuals of O. strigicollis per crops should be released three to six times continuously. To control T. palmi effectively on cucumber in autumn, more than 100 individuals of A. cucumeris per crop should be released four times repeatedly.
