This study was conducted to analyze geminate consonant errors(안에 [an.ɛ] → *안네[an.nɛ]) produced by Chinese learners during their acquisition of Korean linking sounds within the framework of Optimality Theory. The study was further intended to find possible constraints and causes applicable to the error. This paper argues that this error results from the interplay of the Align-R constraint, where the boundaries of a morpheme and syllable are aligned in the learner’s mother tongue, and the onset constraint, which is required for CV, a universal linguistic syllable. This study identifies the cause of the geminate consonant errors among Chinese leaners as the consequence of the simultaneous influences of interference from the learners’ native language and of linking sounds, which occur universally in linguistics.
In this paper, we analyze various types of racing lines and search for the optimum time to pass through the chicane, which are corners smaller than 90 degree. “Best” means the minimum time at maximum speed. This indicates that the inside and outside of the running line is not able to never win the internal between the connected lines. Even in the case of Chicane driving, the vehicle can accelerate at a high speed by increasing the turning radius near the straight line. In the study, the turning angle is inevitable if the angle is large because the turning angle is 44.3 because there is no straight running width. Therefore, by keeping the speed close to the straight line along the path of the incinerator, the speed of escape from the line can be shortened.
본 논문에서는 보의 대변형 및 비틀림 변형을 고려한 인간동력항공기 주익 main spar 질량 최적화 과정을 소개한다. 순차적 이차 프로그래밍 기법(sequential quadratic programming)을 최적화 기법으로 선정해 구조 최적설계에 적절한 최적화 알고리즘을 수행하였다. Main spar 내부 직경, 적층 두께 등을 설계변수로 설정하였다. 목적함수에는 질량 최소화, 굽힘 변형 변위 일정, 그리고 비틀림 변형 각도 일정 등의 요소를 포함하였다. 굽힘과 비틀림 변형 계산엔 대변형 해석에 적합한 기하학적 정밀 보 모델을 도입하였으며, 기하학적 정밀 보 모델에 필요한 단면 물성은 Variational Asymptotic Beam Sectional Analysis(VABS) 단면 해석프로그램를 통해 계산하였다. 그 결과 main spar의 굽힘 변형 및 비틀림 변형을 최대 1.45% 이내로 유지한 채로 7.88%의 질량 감소를 이루는 최적설계를 도출하였다, 이후 응력복원 및 변형률 복원을 통해 최적설계의 구조적 안정성과 최적화 과정의 타당성을 검증하였다.

This study is to show the inadequacy of OT-based analyses of opacity, thus defending rule-based analyses. Analyses in the OT`s framework such as Two-Level Constraints, Sympathy Theory, OO- Correspondence Relation, and Local Conjunction of constraint are found to be inappropriate or costly in solving the problem of opacity in Kyungsang dialect of Korean. Post-Obstruent Tensing applies opaquely in close relation to Consonant Cluster Simplification, where violation marks for the opaque candidate and its transparent counterpart are in a proper subset relation. In such a case, any OT-based analysis suffers theoretical strictures.

Our approach claims that the same principles that govern syntactic structures also contribute to a theory of sentence processing. We also argue, following Gibson & Boihier (1998), that the ambiguities can be resolved by the strategy of Optimality Theory i.e., by picking out the most optimal candidate with the rank of the constraints converted from the principles of Minimalist Program. The constrains suggested here are Thematic Valency, Node Conservativity and Node Locality to explain the preference among the ambiguous interpretations as well as Deictic Condition to select the antecedent for the Pros and anaphors.

Irrigation pipeline networks consist mainly of buried pipes and are therefore relatively free from topographic constraints. Installation of irrigation pipeline systems is increasing since the systems have several advantages compared to open channel systems. To achieve economic design of pipeline networks, the layout should meet several conditions such as shortest path, maximum flow, and least cost. Graph theory is mathematical tool which enable to find out optimum layout for complicated network systems. In this study, applicability of graph theory to figure out optimum layout of irrigation pipeline networks was evaluated.

This paper approaches English word stress within the framework of Optimality Theory. We have seen that there are constraints that interact to produce correct word stress pattern. Foot structure constraints, Ft-Bin, Ft-Form, and WSP, are undominated. Therefore the trochaic footing and quantity requirement are strictly obeyed in English foot building. Non-Head(e) guarantees that underlying schwa accounts for various apparent exceptions. This paper identifies four different such subcategorization constraints : Align-to-δ, Align-in-δ, Align-to-Ft, and Align-to-PrWd. What is really interesting in this approaches that one suffix may have more than one constraint, thereby restricting its appearance in actual words. One step further, this paper shows that the present approach can also explain the so-called cyclicity effect of the stress assignment. Previous cyclical stress theory fails in explaining the difference between the derived and underived word. Therefore, this paper provides new solutions to the old problem of accounting for the difference between the derived and underived words regarding the stress assignment and wellformed word formation.
Kim Myung-Bae. 1999. An Optimality Theoretic Approach to Clitic Sequences in Italian. Studies in Modern Grammatical Theories 16, 161-180. Clitic Sequences in the Romance languages have been the subject of much work in generative linguistics with respect to their morphosyntactic properties and their phonological properties. The purpose of this paper is to examine the clitic sequences in Italian in the framework of Optimality Theory. I will examine how clitics combine and which clitics are chosen when their combination is prohibited. I will show that the conditions on the combination of clitics are best formulated as morphological constraints on the clitic sequences within an Optimality Theoretical Account. Thus, with the morphological constraint ranking I will explain both the order of clitics and the combinatory conditions on clitic sequences in Italian. I will show where the opaque clitics originate from in Italian. Then I will demonstrate how the phonological constraint ranking can explain the opaque clitics in Italian. Finally, I will suggest a tentative ranking for these types of constraints to select the optimal clitic sequence in just one evaluation process.
Hakyeon Kim. 1999. An Optimality Analysis of Null Arguments. Studies in Modern Grammar 16, 121-138. The aim of this paper is to survey the distribution of null subjects and null objects found in Korean and to show that the previous approaches to explain their licensing have not been so successful. We will also show that the licensing of the null arguments are better explained through the methodology of Optimality theory. In accordance with the optimality theory, the constraint ranking such as DropTopic = Parse or DropTopic >> Parse can solve the problems remained in control theory and Huang`s generalized control rule because by changing the constraint ranking even the pro-drop parameters can be explained better. Particularly the asymmetry found in the licensing of null subjects and null objects can be solved with a couple of constraints. However, there remain some detailed problems in the licensing related with pragmatic context and some idiosyncratic features of individual word. And further research for the interpretation of null arguments in Optimality methodology is expected.
Lim, Sang-bong. 1998. Acquisition of Subject-auxiliary Inversion in Child English and Optimality Theory. Studies in Modern Grammar 14, 349-364. The purpose of this paper is to examine whether the patterns of subject-auxiliary inversion in child English questions can be explained by the constraints in Grimshaw`s(1992) Optimality Theory account of inversion patterns in adult English questions. I briefly review the treatment of subject-auxiliary inversion within the Minimalist Theory. The theory claims that subject-auxiliary inversion is a subcase of head movement that moves an auxiliary across the sentence to the head of the presentential complementizer(CP) position in nonselected CPs. In this paper I try to show that the stages of acquisition in subject-auxiliary inversion and the patterns of inversion in child English. And I also show that an Optimality-Theoretic approach can explain several facts regarding the pattern of auxiliary inversion in child English. In addition, this paper argues that the constraints ranking of child English must be different from those of adult English to capture the characteristics of subject-auxiliary inversion in child English.
Hak-youn Kim. 1997. Expletive Constructions in Optimality Theory. Studies in Modern Grammatical Theories 11: 91-105. The main purpose of this paper is to suggest LRI (Last Resort Insertion) instead of Subject in the rank of Subject > FI for optimal expletive in non-pro drop language. The general framework of Optimal Theory in syntax is introduced focused on Ob-Hd constraint in subject-verb inversion in English, and Subject and FI constraints in English and Italian. However the Subject constraint defined as "subject position must be filled" is not enough to cover all the expletive constructions. When the so called associate-NP is definite(DP), it can satisfy EPP feature in Infl without expletive. And Default Agreement of Subject in Icelandic also blocks an expletive in the subject position. Instead the last resort insertion of expletive occurs in order to satisfy the EPP feature only when the associate-NP is indefinite(NP). This is because the expletive functions as a determiner. Therefore I suggest to replace Subject by LRI.
