        Methyl bromide (MeBr) is well-known as a hazardous chemical to exposed fumigators and related workers as well as a ozone depletion chemical. According to recent report in USA and Korea, when MeBr fumigated on orange and grape at low temperature (<10℃), absorbed MeBr on fruits was slowly released to workplace. To replace MeBr practices urgently, ethyl formate (EF) fumigation is considered safer to worker (TLV of EF = 100 ppm compared to MeBr's = 1 ppm) and free from residual problem. We reports confirmative liquid EF (FumateTM) with N2 trials, which is cost-effective and non-CO2 gas emitted, on imported grapes. The 4hr-fumigation of 70 gm-3of EF (CTP > 114 gh-3) in scale-up chamber (10m3) fumigation (20% l.r.), showed efficacies to many kinds of insect pests, non-phytotoxic damage, providing safer guideline at workplace.

        Defended (distasteful or toxic) prey are often characterized by conspicuous coloration and this phenomenon is called "aposematism". The main advantage of aposematism is that it promotes faster learning by predators to avoid the prey. Some defended prey species use a different strategy; they remain cryptic in the normal state, but display conspicuous aposematic signal (which is normally hidden) in response to a predator's approach/attack. This anti-predator strategy of a defended prey has not been well studied yet although it can theoretically give the benefits of both camouflage and aposematism. Here, we investigated the effectiveness of this ‘hidden-aposematic signal’ as a warning signal. Using wild tits (Parus minor) as predator and novel artificial prey models (which mimics wings of insects), we tested whether hidden conspicuous signal of a defended prey enhances the avoidance learning rate of predators and how does it compare with the typical conspicuous/non-conspicuous signal. We found that hidden conspicuous signal indeed enhances the avoidance learning rate of predators in comparison with the non-conspicuous signal. However the overall learning rate by predators to avoid the defended prey was slower than for the normal conspicuous signal. Our results suggest that the prey with hidden-aposematic signals could enjoy both the benefits camouflage and the benefits of aposematism that are however lower than benefits from a typical aposematic signal. We, for the first time, highlight the functional aspect of a unique, but yet largely ignored, defensive coloration of prey.

        현행 국제해상충돌방지규칙 제14조의 마주치는 상태의 항법에서 피항선들이 피항동작을 취할 시기의 기준이 되는 피항개시거리를 선체운동학적으로 해석산출하기 위하여, 수척의 대소형 선작의 실선시험에서 구한 조종성지수를 이용하여 피항개시거리를 산출하고 이를 검토고찰하였다. 그 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 2척의 동력선이 충돌의 위험이 내포되도록 정면 또는 거의 정면으로 마주치는 경우 변계만으로 피항동작을 취할 때 최소피항개시거리는 자선 길이의 약 5배이다. 2. 2척의 동력선이 충돌의 위험이 내포되도록 정면 또는 거의 정면으로 마주치는 경우 피항동작을 취할 안전피항개시거리는 자선 길이의 약 10배이다. 3. 특정한 선형에 대하여는 본 연구에서의 계산법에 의한 최소피항개시거리와 안전피항개시거리를 산출하여 두면 감각에 의한 조선방법으로 야기되는 충돌해난사고를 지양할 수 있으리라 생각된다.

        Generic medicine (GM), which is an alternative drug product for branded medicine (BM), is used less in Japan than in other OECD countries. Therefore, we investigate why the medical consumers of Japan avoid the use of GMs even though the efficacy and safety of the medicines have already been proven. We theorize that effectiveness or risk of GMs are related to the consumer attitude toward GMs is affected by the behavioral approach/activation system (BAS) which promotes actions to reach the desired state, and the behavioral inhibition system (BIS) which suppresses behaviors to avoid negative outcomes. To see which of the BAS and BIS dimensions are related to GM usage, we surveyed 374 Japanese consumers and found that Quality, Efficacy, Safety, & Cost-effectiveness with the BAS, and Functional Risk, Financial Risk, Social Risk, Physical Risk, Psychological Risk, & Time Risk with the BIS had a significant effect on consumer attitude to GMs. These results are important in that they 1), confirm the role of BAS/BIS in attitudes to GMs, 2), provide guidelines when marketing GMs, 3), help governments promote the use of GMs as a cost-saving measure, and 4), guide future surveys regarding consumer attitudes to GMs.

        해상에서의 충돌사고 예방을 위한 충돌회피 원칙 및 각종 항법 등을 규정하고 있는 국제해상충돌예방규칙은 선박 간 충돌회피를 위한 초기대응 기준에 대해 대부분 선박 운항자 경험 및 주관적 판단에 의해 결정하도록 명시되어 있다. 그러나 초임 해기사나 학생들은 선박 운항 환경을 종합적으로 판단할 수 있는 경험 및 능력이 부족하므로, 충돌방지를 위한 최소한의 정량적인 초동조치 기준을 제시해 줌으로써 충돌사고를 효과적으로 예방할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다. 본 연구에서는 해상충돌예방규칙 및 기존 충돌위험 관련 연구 동향을 분석하였으며, 다양한 승선경력을 가진 선박 운항자들을 대상으로 설문을 실시하여 선박 간 조우관계에 따라 주관적으로 판단하는 최소 안전 이격거리와 초 기대응의 개시 거리 및 변침각도를 조사하였다. 이러한 분석 결과를 기초로 선박 조우 관계별 충돌회피를 위한 초기 동작이 필요한 거리, 안 전 이격거리 및 변침각도를 제시한다. 초기대응 기준은 해양사고 예방뿐만 아니라 점진적인 운항 기술의 향상에 기여할 것이다.

        본 논문은 동물들의 집단행동에서 나타나는 포식자-희생자 관계에서 포식자에 대한 희생자의 추격회피 행동을 분석한다. 희생자가 포식자의 추격을 피하는 하나의 방법이 인접거리에서 급회전을 하는 것이다. 그때 희생자가 추격으로부터 살아남기 위해서는 임계거리와 회전각은 매우 중요하다. 여기서 임계거리는 회전 시작 직전 포식자와 희생자 사이의 거리이다. 이러한 임계거리와 회전각을 분석하기 위하여 본 논문은 추격의 시작에서 보유한 포식자의 에너지와 추격동안 소비한 포식자의 에너지를 이용한다. 시뮬레이션을 통하여, 임계거리가 짧을수록 희생자가 추격으로부터 살아남을 수 있는 회전각은 커진다는 것과 포식자의 질량에 대한 희생자의 질량의 비율이 작아지는 경우에도 역시 회전각 커진다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 시뮬레이션 결과는 자연에서 나타나는 현상과 유사하며, 따라서 이것은 본 논문에서 분석한 방법이 옳다는 것을 의미한다.

        The purpose of this study is to link Eliot’s exploration of “silence” and “negation” in Four Quartets with Derridean deconstruction, especially his essay, “How to Avoid Speaking.” The Eliot/Derrida parallel of this paper deals with a real question that one work can illuminate the other, rather than pursuing the similarities of their thoughts and revealing the interactions or influences. Eliot and Derrida share a common distrust of language. Eliot’s exploration of the void seems to be close to Derrida’s assertion, and Eliot’s “still point” is like an approach to the idea of différance. Throughout his career, the sense of the void never really leaves Eliot. Derrida also mentions about his implicit relation to negative theology. In Four Quartets, however, we can locate his turn toward the value of humility as an important difference between Eliot and Derrida. Eliot raises a question whether silence, in surpassing language, indeed fulfills the vision of unity and eternity; or only by negation can we indicate what remains forever beyond the conditions of representation. Thus one of his greatest concerns is the spiritual vicissitudes of finding and keeping a viable way.

        In the North Pacific Ocean a lot of large waves set up in winter, affected by continued winds and swells owing to severe extratropical cyclones. Under this sea condition, if the ship is about 100,000L/T (in deadweight capacity tonnage), we can't find the danger involved in the ship at sea apparently. But when we compare the seaworthiness of ship's building strength with the stress given to the hull by waves, we can't insist that the former be more stronger than the latter. As a result, VLCC is in danger of destroying and cutting for lack of longitudinal strength in heavy weather. Up to this time, Naval Architects have actively studied the relation between ship's longitudinal strength and waves as a ship's projector; however, actually, they have never made more profound study on the problem of longitudinal strength in relation to navigation. The main puprpose of this thesis is to clarify these vivid actual states of ship's trouble unknown to ship's masters. In this thesis we picked up VLCC Pan Yard, a vessel of Pan Ocean Bulk Carrier company's, as a model ship. And in the North Pacific Ocean, we have chosen for this research the basins where the wind speed and the wave height are greater than average. The data used this thesis are quotes from the "winds and waves of the North Pacific Ocean('64-'73)", and wind speed more than 30 knots was made use of as an ocject of this study. By usinh the ITTC wave spectrum, we found out the significant waves for every 5 knots within the range of 20 knots to 45 knots of wind speed. According to this H1/1000 was calculated. The stress of ship's hull is determined by ship's speed and wave height. We compared the ship's longitudinal strength with a planned wave height by rules of several famous classification societies in the world. In the last analysis, we found out that ship's present planned strength in heavy weather is not enough. Finally we made a graph for avoiding heavy weather, with which we studied safe ship's handling in the North pacafic Ocean in winter.

        In the Sailing Rules of International Regulation for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972, any definite distance between two vessels approaching each other is not referred for adequate maneuvering to avoid collision. At sea the officer in charge of bridge duty is required to guess safe distance before he takes maneuvering actions needed to avoid collision. Papers on safe distances calculated on the base of the motiional characteristics of ships for collision avoiding actions are very few. In this paper, the minimum safe approaching distances necessary for actions to be taken to avoid collision are calculated in numerical numbers definitely by mathematic formula based on the maneuvering indices got from experiments of actual ships. On the assumption that two vessels same in size and conditions are approaching each other, the author calculated the minimum safe approaching distance as 4.5 times, sufficient safe approaching one as 9.0 times the length of the ship involved in head-on situation and 5.0 times, 10 times respectively the length of the ship in each case mentioned above in crossing situation.

        Since 1960 tankers and bulk carriers have rapidly increased in size up to 500, 000 dwt. in operating as main system of transportation for the international trade at sea, and studies are doing carried out by various groups with a view to increasing the size still further. However, the service speed of these ships has remained almost constant, and steering devices of them have nearly not changed, comparing with regular size of a dry cargo ship. This creats the dituation where stopping distance and advance are proportionally longer for larger ships. In case of collision at sea, these vessels have been arised some serious casualties, such as sinking, fire and oil pollution. This paper analyzers a study for the handling of super huge vessels to avoid collision at sea, basing on the results of the crash astern test and turning test of them.
