In the actual sea, the additional resistance due to external force such as wind, current and wave is accompanied, and the required power is added in response to these resistance. Especially when the ship is sailing at low speed, the effects of wind and current have a great impact on the safe control of the ship. Likewise, it is thought that the effects of wind and current have a great impact on the trawl ship control since the towing speed of a bottom trawl ship is a low speed of 3 to 4 knots. If the reduce of ship speed and the increase of engine power due to the influence of wind and current can be identified, the safe towing power can be calculated based on a given engine output. Thus, the appropriate size of a fishing gear can be determined. In this study, a total of 20 trawl operations were conducted for seasonal maritime research in the same research area according to the operation mode of propeller. Based on navigation data, trawl fishing data, and engine performance data acquired during the towing fishing gear, and data of ship speed, hull resistance, fishing gear resistance, wind force and current force according to an incidence angle were estimated. The overall power for these loads was calculated and compared with the measured engine power, and the effects of wind force and current force on the engine power were investigated.

Discarding juvenile fishes under girth 16 cm nearly equal to inner perimeter of codend mesh size collected by a cover net method in bottom trawl. The body size of the main five species (mackerel, horse mackerel, sea bream, melon seed and black throat seaperch) was measured for their body length, girth, weight, height and width and analyzed size selectivity. Frequency of penetrating fish as retention in a cover net was less than 40% of total number of juvenile discarding fish. The most of body length or girth of five species were significantly different between in the codend and in the cover net. The 50% selection girth in the cover net ranged 8-11 cm were smaller than those in the codend ranged 9-13 cm by the species respectively. The 50% selection body length was significantly related with the ratio of body height (H) by body width (W) both for in the codend or in the cover net while 50% selection girth was not significantly related with H/W. Furthermore 50% selection fish size by fish species between in the codend and in the cover net was not significantly different both in body length or girth. Therefore, the girth selectivity represented possibly as one unique value regarding fish body shape was considered as more useful method for multi-species catch in trawl.

The tension of warp from trawler and sea-floor contact can generate tilt and wake turbulence around otter boards. Preliminary measurements of otter board tilt and 3-D flow velocity during bottom trawl operations were taken using a vector instrument to investigate the effects of wake turbulence at the trailing edge of the otter board. Tilt data (i.e., yaw, pitch, and roll) at 1 Hz and flow data (velocities in the towing, lateral, and vertical directions) at 16 Hz were analyzed to determine their periods and amplitudes using global wavelet and peak event analyses. The mean period (±standard deviation) of the tilt from the peak event analysis (5±2 s) was longer or double than that of flow velocity (3±2 s). The two periods also had a significant linear relationship. The turbulence rate of flow was 30-50% at the trailing edge and was closely related to roll deviation. The frequency of phase difference ratios (i.e., peak time differences between tilts and flow periods) was significantly different from random occurrence in two trials, possibly due to side tidal effects. However, in the other trials, flow peaks were random, as shown by the even peak times between tilts and flows. Future studies should focus on reducing tilt variation, wake turbulence, and bottom contact to stabilize otter board motion.

The purpose of this study is to identify the flow resistance of the bottom pair trawl nets. The bottom pair trawl nets being used in fishing vessel (100G/T, 550ps) was selected as a full-scale net, and 1/10, 1/25 and 1/50 of the model nets were made. Converted into the full-scale net by Tauti’s modeling rule and Kim’s modeling rule, when resistance coefficient k of each net was calculated by substituting into above equation for flow resistance R and wall area of nets S values of each net v. Because resistant coefficient k decreases exponentially according as flow velocity v increases to make k cv-m, c and m values of each net were compared. As a result, as the model was smaller, c and m values was smaller in the two rule into standard of 1/10 model value, decrease degree of 1/25 model was almost same in the two rule, decrease degree of 1/50 model was very big in Tauti’s modeling rule. Therefore, in the result of experiment, because average of c and m values for similarly 1/10 and 1/25 model were given c=4.9 (kgf․s2/m4) and m=0.45, R (kgf) of bottom pair trawl net could show R =4.9Sv1.55 using these values. As in the order of cod-end, wing and bag part for 1/25 and 1/50 model net were removed in turn, measured flow resistance of each, converted into the full-scale, total resistance of the net and the resistance of each part net were calculated. The resistance ratio of each part for total net was not same in 1/25 and 1/50 model each other, but average of two nets was perfectly same area ratio of each part as the wing, bag and cod-end part was 43%, 45% and 12%. However, the resistance of each part divided area of the part, calculated the resistance of per unit area, wing and bag part were not big difference each other, while the resistance of cod-end part was very large.

The negative factors of fishery in environmental aspect of view are Greenhouse gas emission problems by high usage of fossil fuel, destruction of underwater ecosystem by bottom trawls, reduction of resources by fishing and damage of ecosystem diversity. Especially, the Greenhouse gas emission from fisheries is an important issue due to Cancún meeting, Mexico in 1992 and Kyoto protocol in 2005. However, the investigation on the GHG emissions from Korean fisheries did not much carry out. Therefore, the quantitative analysis of GHG emissions from Korean fishery industry is needed as a first step to find a relevant way to reduce GHG emissions from fisheries. The purpose of this research is to investigate which degree of GHG emitted from fishery. Here, we calculated the GHG emission from Korean bottom pair trawl fishery using the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) method. The system boundary and input parameters for each process level are defined for LCA analysis. The fuel use coefficient of the fishery is also calculated. The GHG emissions from the representative fishes caught by bottom pair trawl will be dealt with. Furthermore, the GHG emissions for the edible weight of fishes are calculated with consideration to the different consuming areas and slaughtering process also. The results will be helpful to understand the circumstances of GHG emissions from Korean fisheries.

The angle of attack of a cambered otter board in a bottom trawl was estimated using a three-dimensional semi-analytic treatment of a towing cable (warp) system that was applied to the field experiments of a bottom trawl obtained by the Scanmar system. The equilibrium condition of the horizontal component and vertical component of forces was used to the three forces acting on the otter board in the horizontal plane. Those forces were the force on the warp at the bracket, hydrodynamic lift and drag forces on the otter board and the force on the hand rope attached just behind the otter board. Also the equilibrium of moment about the front edge of the otter board was used to find out the angle of attack of the cambered otter board. When the warp length was 120m and 180m long and the towing speed was between 1.23 and 1.90 m/s, the estimated angle of attack of the cambered otter board was ranged between 26.1° and 29.6°, respectively, though the maximum lift force was at the angle of attack 22.6°. The angle of attack of the otter board was tended to increase weakly with the longer length of warp (180 m) at the same towing speed in the experiment.

The purpose of this study is to identify the flow resistance of the bottom trawl net. The bottom trawl net being used in the training ship of Chonnam National University was selected as a full-scale net, and model nets such as 1/10, 1/25 and 1/50 of the actual net were made. Total resistance of the net part, the height of the net mouth and the flow resistance of components of the net such as wing, bag and cod-end part was measured, converted into full-scale and compared. Additionally, the model rule of Tauti (1934), which has been most frequently used in fishing net modeling experiments, was applied to interpret flow resistance and scale effect of model experiment was investigated. Presumed that the flow resistance R is R=kSr2 against the flow velocity of each net r, resistance coefficient k was calculated by substituting R, r and S of the net. From the result, it was found that k decreases exponentially when u increases which makes k=cr-m. Whereas m of each net is ranged between 0.13-0.16 and there was not significant difference between nets. c does not show big difference in 1/10 and 1/25 model and the value itself was relatively bigger than in 1/50 model. The height of the net mouth of 1/25 and 1/50 model net h decreases exponentially according as r increases to make h=dr-n. Whereas d and n values were almost same in two nets. Additionally, when resistance of cod-end, wing and bag part in 1/25 and 1/50 model nets, both nets showed big resistance in bag part when flow is 1m/s as more than 60%. Wing and cod-end part showed almost same value or wing part had little bit larger value. On the other hand, when reviewing the reasons why both models showed difference in 1/50 model while c value against the resistance coefficient k did not show big difference in 1/10 and 1/25 model, it is inferred that the difference occurred not from material difference but from the difference in net size according to scale. It was judged that they are the scale effects concomitant to the model experiments.

Estimation of the gear shape and cross section of sweep at mouth of a bottom trawl net was described and applied to the field experiments obtained with the Scanmar system. The shape of the trawl net from wingend to the beginning of codend was assumed to be part of an elliptic cone of which the cross section was ellipse, and that of the float rope be of form yf=afxbf. In case of a bottom trawl with warp 180m long, the radius of ellipse, the cross section of sweep at mouth, the eccentricity of the ellipse, the inclination angle of float rope and the contribution of the side panel to net height were estimated in accordance with towing speed. The horizontal radius of the upper ellipse increased with increasing towing speed, the eccentricity of it became slightly bigger as increasing the towing speed which meant the shape of it being flat. And the inclination angle of the float rope was about between 7 and 12 degrees in case of the above bottom trawl.

A model experiment using circulation water channel was carried out to investigate the dynamic characteristics of bottom trawl net which can be used in sea mount of North Pacific. Hydrodynamic resistance and shape variation according to the flow velocity and angle of hand rope transformation for net were measured, and experimental value was analyzed as the value of full-scale bottom trawl net. The results summarized are as follows; At the 30˚ of angle of hand rope to net, hydrodynamic resistance varied from 0.5kgf to 2.68kgf as the flow velocity increased between 0.31m/s and 0.92m/s, and formula of hydrodynamic resistance for the model net was Fm=3.04 · r1.53. At the fixed angle of hand rope, Net height was low and Net width was high according to the increase of flow velocity, and in addition, vertical opening was low and Net width was high by the increase of angle of hand rope at the fixed flow velocity. At the 30˚ of angle of hand rope to net, net opening area was 0.214m2 as flow velocity was 0.61m/s, and formula of net opening area for the model net was Sm=-0.22r+0.35. At the 30˚ of angle of hand rope to net, catch efficiency seemed to be highest as 0.319m3/s of filtering volume at the 0.76m/s(51kt's) of flow velocity. Shape variation of net showed the gradual laminar transform for the variation of flow velocity but there needed some improvements due to the occurrence of shortening at the ahead of wing net.

In order to estimate the effective horse power(EHP) in towing net of a bottom trawl ship, the ship's resistance was calculated by using a series data of Yamagata and Wigley formula. Also the effective horse power for a ship(EHPs) was estimated versus the ship speed in sailing and the propulsive efficiency was calculated with the brake horse power and the effective horse power. Then the effective horse power for a ship and a trawl net were estimated in the application of the propulsive efficiency in towing net. The total effective horse power(EHPT) was average 187.6kW and the effective horse power for a 1.awl net(EHPn) was average 176.7kW at a smooth sea state in towing net. The ratio of EHPn to EHPT was about 94.0% and the value was higher slightly than was already informed at a smooth sea state. The power for keeping up a townet speed was required more about 20% of a maximum continuous power at a rather rough sea state than a smooth sea state. In the future, if the residual resistance is considered with a sea state, EHPn will be estimated more correctly Also the data of EHP estimated by this method will be used as the basic data to design a trawl net.
