In this study, the performances of H2S, NH3, and HCl sensors for real-time monitoring in small emission facilities (4, 5 grades in Korea) were evaluated at high concentration conditions of those gases. And the proper approach for the collection of reliable measurement data by sensors was suggested through finding out the effect on sensor performances according to changes in temperature and humidity (relative humidity, RH) settings. In addition, an assessment on sensor data correction considering the effects produced by environmental settings was conducted. The effects were tested in four different conditions of temperature and humidity. The sensor performances (reproducibility, precision, lower detection limit (LDL), and linearity) were good for all three sensors. The intercept (ADC0) values for all three sensors were good for the changes of temperature and humidity conditions. The variation in the slope value of the NH3 sensor showed the highest value, and this was followed by the HCl, H2S sensors. The results of this study can be helpful for data collection by enabling the more reliable and precise measurements of concentrations measured by sensors.

Kr-85 has a half-life of 10.7 years and it stays in the atmosphere for a long time. However it does not accumulate as an noble gas but only emits beta particles. Therefore its contribution to environmental radiation dose is lower than any other radionuclides. Kr-85 is one of the main fission products produced by nuclear fission reaction and artificial radionuclide that does not exist in nature. For these reasons, monitoring Kr-85 from the atmosphere is meaningful so that the nuclear-related facilities are recommended to control and regulate environmental emissions. Post Irradiation Examination Facility (PIEF) which located in KAERI is a facility that conducts various material and chemical experiments using the irradiated nuclear fuels. Therefore, various radionuclides can present in gaseous effluent including Kr-85. To prevent the environmental hazards and guarantee the radiation safety of the public, nuclear facilities are recommended to be equipped with stack radiation/radioactivity monitoring system, so that the Kr-85 concentration in gaseous effluent is controlled within the regulatory criteria. Particularly, the Kr-85 concentration of gaseous effluent is commonly monitored by the stack monitoring system connected to the process ventilation system from the hot cell. The monitoring system supply the information such as beta count rate, dose rate and flow rate, etc. Due to the concentration of Kr-85 in gaseous effluent is subject to regulatory guide lines, a systemized procedure for calculating Kr-85 concentration of the stack exhaust is necessary. Furthermore, the emission should be monitored whether it satisfies the regulatory standard or does not. This paper performed discussion on the process of calculating the concentration of Kr-85 in the gaseous effluent of PIEF stack from the monitoring system (NGM209, MGP), and the amount of Kr- 85 over the last 2 years emissions was calculated. In addition to calculating effluent rate of radioactive Kr-85, the Minimum Detectable Concentration (MDC) and Decision Threshold (SD) were calculated. As a result, the calculated Kr-85 concentration was below the SD during the entire period. It is considered that there are no environmental emissions of Kr-85.
Nitrogen-doped carbon dots (CDts) with tunable fluorescence properties in aqueous media were synthesized hydrothermally. The excitation wavelength variation to obtain the maximum emission produced a blue shift in the emission peaks upon dilution in an aqueous solution. The shift can be explained by a re-absorption phenomenon in a concentrated solution. The interparticle interaction within was responsible to show dilution-dependent optical behavior. The as-synthesized solution of CDts did not show any prominent absorption peak over a wide range. However, upon dilution, two peaks became predominant. The concentration-dependent behavior was observed during the interaction with metal cations. Cationic salts of Co(II) and Hg(II) caused quenching at different dilutions of CDts. This might be explained by the exposure of different surface functional groups during dilution and metal-ion–CDts charge transfer. The quenched fluorescence of CDts was rescued using ascorbic acid. Therefore, the one-pot detection of Co(II)/Hg(II) and ascorbic acid was designed through a ‘Turn Off/On’ phenomenon.
The effect of the change in air inflow velocity has been investigated at the opening of the malodor emission source to determine its influence on the Complex odor concentration. Both the Complex odor collection efficiency and concentrations were measured according to the change in airflow velocity. When the air inflow velocity was 0.1 m/s, it was observed that some of the generated gas streams were diffused to the outside due to low collection efficiency. In contrast, only the increased gas collection volume up to 0.5 m/s showed no substantial reduction of the Complex odor concentration, which indicates an increase in the size of the local exhaust system as well as the operation cost for the Complex odor control device. When the air inflow velocity reached 0.3 m/s, the Complex odor concentrations not only were the lowest, but the odorous gas could also be collected efficiently. The air inflow velocity at the opening of the malodor emission source was considered the key factor in determining the gas collection volume. Therefore, based on the results of this study, an optimal air inflow velocity might be suggestive to be 0.3 m/s.
Sulfate produced during anaerobic reduction limits the activity of methanogens but it is not reflected in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) methodology for estimating CH4 emissions. In this study, CH4 emissions from the Sudokwon landfill site were estimated by adopting a methane correction factor, which was determined through the relationship between the COD/sulfate ratio and CH4 generation. Although the gas originating from the Sudokwon landfill site has not produced any environmental problems in recent years due to gas collection and soil cover maintenance activities, CH4 emissions estimated by the IPCC methodology indicated that only 60% of the CH4 was recovered and the remainder was emitted into the atmosphere, suggesting a potential environmental problem. Accordingly, CH4 estimates determined according to IPCC methodology must be modified by adopting the methane correction factor and considering the effect of sulfate concentration.
The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of replacing 40% corn meal with three different types of barley (Youngyang, Wooho, and Yuyeon) on the chemical compositions, microbial indices, gas emission, and volatile fatty acid (VFA) content in feces of growing pigs. Sixteen pigs (Landrace × Yorkshire × Duroc) with an initial average body weight of 71 ± 2 kg were maintained in metabolic cages and randomly allotted to four treatments containing different sources of barley, for 23 days. The treatment with three different barley types replacing 40% ground corn showed no effect (P>0.05) on fecal chemical compositions, microbial indices, gas emission, and VFA. However, some differences (P<0.05) were noted in the chemical compositions of crude fiber and ash, and in the levels of Lactobacillus and Salmonella in the feces of the growing pigs. In conclusion, methane and hydrogen sulfide decreased by replacing 40% corn meal with Youngyang and Wooho barley, respectively.
This study analyzes the PM10 characteristics (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter less than 10 ㎛), concentration, and emissions in eight large South Korean cities (Seoul, Incheon, Daejeon, Daegu, Gwangju, Ulsan, Busan, Jeju). The annual median of PM10 concentration showed a decline of 0.02~1.97 ㎍/㎥ in the regions, except for Incheon, which recorded an annual 0.02 ㎍/㎥ increase. The monthly distribution levels were high in spring, winter, fall, and the summer, but were lower in summer for all regions except for Ulsan. These differences are thought to be due to the dust in spring and the cleaning effect of precipitation in summer. The variation in concentrations during the day (diurnal variation) showed that PM10 levels were very high during the rush hour and that this was most extreme in the cities (10.00 and 18.00-21.00). The total annual PM10 emissions analysis suggested that there had been a general decrease, except for Jeju. On-road mobile (OM) sources, which contributed a large proportion of the particulates in most regions, decreased, but fugitive dust (FD) sources increased in the remaining regions, except for Daegu. The correlation analysis between PM10 concentrations and emissions showed that FD could be used as a valid, positive predictor of PM10 emissions in Seoul (74.5% (p<0.05)), Dajeon (47.2% (p<0.05)), and Busan (59.1% (p<0.01)). Furthermore, industrial combustion (IC) was also a significant predictor in Incheon (61.7% (p<0.01)), and on-road mobile (OC) sources were a valid predictor in Daegu (24.8% (p<0.05)).
The objective of this study was to investigate the 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) concentrations and emission sources from the soils of three regions (north, mid-south, and east) in Jeollanamdo. Overall PAH concentrations in the east region were higher than in north and mid-south regions and 9.1 times higher for polluted areas. The results of the emission source study indicated that average Ant/(Ant+Phe) and InP/(InP+BghiP) ratios were 0.15-0.22 and 0.36-0.46, respectively, which indicated dominant pyrogenic sources in the three regions. For the InP/(InP+BghiP) ratio, various emission sources were shown in the east region where petrochemical facilities and oil storage tanks have been operated.
Odor from sewage treatment plants have the potential to cause significant annoyance and to impact the amenity. In this study, odor emission characteristics at unit process of 48 sewage treatment facilities in 39 plants were evaluated using composite odor concentration and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) concentration. The values of composite odor concentration (geometry mean) and H2S concentration (median) for sludge treatment processes are higher than those for the other treatment processes. The composite odor concentration and H2S concentration are distributed over a wide area in each process. Composite odor concentration (dilution ratio) was found to have the significant correlation with H2S concentration (p=0.000<0.05). The H2S concentration accounted for 67.1% of composite odor concentration.
This study assessed the characteristic of BTEX (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, Xylene) concentration ratios of industrial emission sources and the neighborhoods of industrial area, fuel such as gasoline, light oil, LPG, and similar gasoline, and ambient air in Daegu. The BTEX in aromatic compounds was the most abundant VOC in Daegu. The BTEX ratios were (0.2:2.6:1.0:1.8) for the neighborhoods of industrial area, (2.6:11.3:1.0:1.2) for residential area, (2.2:11.0:1.0:1.6) for commercial area, (1.0:14.9:1.0:1.3) for industrial area, and (0.2:2.6:1.0:1.8) for the neighborhoods of industrial area. Average BTEX ratios in Daegu were B/T ratio (0.1), B/EB ratio (1.5), B/X ratio (1.1), T/EB ratio (12.6), T/X ratio(10), EB/X ratio (0.7). Expecially, B/T ratio in Daegu was similar as the other cities, Bangkok, Manila, and Hongkong. Comparing other cities with B/T ratio, the main sources of VOC were vehicular exhaust and emission of industrial facilities. Furthermore, BTEX correlation were evaluated at the emission sources and regional areas. Results showed that correlation coefficient values of emission sources, fuels and neighborhood of industry were significant magnitude above 0.65(p<0.01). Also, there showed highly significant correlations among BTEX. Calculated correlation coefficients of ambient air sampling sites were 0.61~0.954 for commercial /residential area and 0.613~0.998 for industrial area. However, they showed different correlation between commercial/residental area and industrial area. It implied that the emission sources were different from each area.
