Purpose: This study aims to explore the students’ experiences of taking class in nursing philosophy at the graduate school of nursing.
Methods: Data were collected through individual in-depth interviews with 18 participants who took nursing philosophy class. Core question was 'What is your experience of taking nursing philosophy class?' Verbatim transcripts were analyzed using content analysis.
Results: Qualitative data analysis revealed nine theme clusters in four categories; 'The distance from philosophy that is too far to be friendly’, ‘Finding the academic roots of nursing',’The way to find answers through creative insights' and ‘Presenting a vision of nursing through reflection and maturity'.
Conclusion: Nursing graduate students initially encountered challenging thoughts and a sense of detachment from reality when they embarked on their nursing philosophy class. However, nursing philosophy classes are essential for uncovering the academic foundations of nursing science, fostering creative insights, and navigating the actual clinical fields. This is particularly crucial because nurses frequently encounter numerous ethical dilemmas and critical decision-making situations. Nursing philosophy classes should be mandated as a required course for nursing graduate students, as they are responsible for shaping the future of nursing scholars.

This paper is intended to explore the otherness of ‘non-mainstream’ graduate students specializing in applied linguistics at various departments of English language and literature in Korea. Drawing on Honneth’s theory of recognition and its ideology, it attempted to understand the way their ‘professional identities’ are constructed both within and without the related academic communities. Through interviews and reflection journals, the lived stories of research participants illustrated that their trajectories of growth were not a transmission of knowledge and skills in applied linguistics, and that Honneth’s threefold conceptualization of intersubjective recognition (love, rights, solidarity) was usefully applied to the sociopolitical inquiry of ‘becoming professional.’ They did not feel a sense of affection, were not respected as rights-holders, and did not have mutual esteem and solidarity. The non-mainstream students strived for recognition in the graduate program by voicing their emotions in their qualitative research papers and improving their limited proficiency of English which, however, led to ‘uncritical’ conformity. They lost the emancipatory struggle for their independent and scholarly selves. The model of mutual recognition is expected to show good potential as an analytic tool for understanding the motivational and justificatory basis for social struggles. Further research is suggested to examine how Honneth’s theory can help in understanding people in different disciplines.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the usage of address terms for professors by undergraduate and graduate students by the sociolinguistic methodology. To this end, this paper applied an integrated approach that combines quantitative analysis based on the response results of multiple-choice questions in the survey and qualitative interpretation based on the response results of subjective questions in both the survey and the in-depth interview. First, through quantitative analysis of the variation in the use of address terms, it was confirmed that “professor” occupies an overwhelming proportion and that the academic field of the speaker is the most important factor. The higher the intimacy with professors, the more “teacher” was used. Next, through the qualitative interpretation of the reason and meaning of using their choice of address terms, the most basic and superficial reason was to follow the experiences and customs in the affiliated community. The use of “professor” had some reasons or meanings such as meeting courtesy and expectations, highlighting privileged status, and equal respect for all the faculty members, whereas “teacher” was used as an expression of intimacy.
An Indirect Complaint(IC) is defined as the expression of dissatisfaction about oneself or someone/something that is not present in conversations. The present study considered ICs as positive strategies to build rapport and solidarity and investigated different responses of IC between Cambodian Korean learners as a second language(L2) and Korean native speakers by analyzing two categories – verbal and nonverbal responses. Data from the conversation of each group showed that non-substantive responses were highly employed in the non-native group, while commiserating responses were frequently used in the native group in verbal responses. On the other side, non-verbal commiserating strategies were observed relatively more in non-native speakers than in natives. As a result of the post-interview on IC perception, every participant of both groups perceived the positive effects of ICs. Based on the result, this study suggests applying ICs as positive social strategies when teaching Korean as L2, which leads the learners to have more opportunities to interact and practice the L2.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore and analyze the education experiences of nursing graduate students in training simulation educators. Methods: Data were collected using a focus group method with a total of 13 nursing graduate students who ever participated in simulation education for nursing college students. Results: Four theme clusters and 15 sub-themes were emerged through qualitative content analysis. The core theme was “Flapping wings as a novice simulation educator”. The four theme clusters include ‘Confronting myself where expectations and worries coexist’, ‘Experience a new world untrained in the hospital’, ‘Limitation of simulation hard to reach the reality’, ‘Way to become an expert in simulation education’. Conclusion: Nursing graduate students found that the experiences of novice learners as a simulation educator was rewarding and helpful in increasing their self-confidence prior to being placed in an educational setting. Creating a simulation experience for college students could be a daunting task for educators in nursing. Therefore, continued and sustainable efforts are mandated by developing the curriculum for training simulation educators.
Yang, Myung-hee & Kim, Bo-hyeon. 2017. “A Study on Korean Language Anxiety in the Classrooms of Advanced-level Korean Language Learners for Academic purposes: With Chinese Students in Graduate School in Korea”. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea 25(1). 119~141. The aim of this study is to examine the level of and the factors for Korean language anxiety in the classrooms of advanced-level Korean language learners for academic purposes. To this end, 60 Chinese students attending graduate school participated in the survey with the questionnaires: i.e., PRCA and FLCAS. The results suggest as follows. First, the Korean language anxiety level in the classrooms of the Chinese students is likely to be high. Also, it is not because of the participants’ traits, but because of the classroom environment. Second, there are 5 factors for Korean language anxiety in the classrooms; communication anxiety with native speakers, communication anxiety, fears of negative evaluation and failing in class, Korean proficiency anxiety, and negative attitudes toward class. Especially, the forth factor suggests that Korean learners needs an educational intervention of Korean, even after they enter undergraduate or graduate institutions. Third, there is a negative correlation between Korean language anxiety in the classroom and a residence period in Korea. That is, it is necessary to give them as many opportunities as possible for being exposed to Korean by a Korean educational intervention.
Academic identity of graduate students is of considerable importance in their lives in graduate school and the process in which they became academics. In this study, we aimed to examine how education graduate students in South Korea construct their academic identities. In pursuing this purpose, we included maste.r students as well as doctoral students. In addition to this, we focused on the academic identity of part-time students, in this case mostly teachers. Semi-structured interviews with nine graduate students in a university were used to understand their experiences. Analysis procedure included open coding, axial coding and selective coding of transcriptions. The results indicated that the criterion to distinguish undergraduate, master's, and doctoral experiences was the degree of autonomy in academic work. There were also significant differences between doing a master's and a doctoral degree, including the relationship with the advisor and students ' perception of academic work. In addition, this study found that part-timers experienced floating identities, and explored factors that influenced their identity formation. The result of this study is expected to contribute to improving formal and informal educational practices in graduate schools of education in South Korea and facilitate intercultural conversation on graduate education.
With restrictions in the target language, taking turns in a timely fashion to participate in class discussions can be a challenging task for L2 learners. In order to understand L2 learners" particular choices and behaviors in taking turns in class discussions, an in-depth investigation of their experiences and views contributed by the learners themselves is called for. This paper pursues a qualitative case study on Korean graduate students" experiences and perceptions of taking turns to participate in class discussions in a content course. Analysis of data from interviews, observations, and documents revealed that Korean students perceived language ability, cultural difference, educational background, context/condition, and personality as responsible for the challenges they faced in taking turns in class discussions in English. The Korean students were also aware of the differences between the native speakers and themselves with respect to the strategies applied to gain turns in discussions noting that the native speakers used certain expressions that eased the turn-takes. Contrary to expectations, the Korean students saw L2 proficiency as just one factor involved in obtaining turns in class discussions and highlighted confidence as a crucial factor for success.
This study investigated how adult second language learners negotiate their social, relational identities in real-life communicative interactions within professional, institutional social settings. Based on the sociocultural approach to identity formation (e.g., Lantolf & Pavlenko, 2001; Penuel & Wertsch, 1995), this study examined five Korean graduate students’ experiences with and perspectives regarding their real-life communicative interactions within U.S. academe. The study findings suggested the importance of English learners’ enactment of positive, relational identities in enhancing their agency in order to actively participate in English communicative practices and continue to improve their English proficiency. Pedagogical implications for enhancing Korean students’ agency in learning English were also discussed.
This qualitative study was designed to understand a role of culture on the experiences of Korean study abroad graduate students who tried to adjust to the U.S. academic and social life. Data was collected by semi-structured interviews and analyzed by the inductive process to identify analytical categories that emerged from the data. Three participants decided to go to a U.S. college in order to have an efficient learning environment, financial support, and career after schooling. They were satisfied with the factors that motivated them to study abroad as well as the American’s attitudes and observance of the rules. However, they experienced frustrations and difficulties in classrooms and in social settings due to limited English proficiency, the lack of familiarity with the American learning environment, and certain American’s unfair treatment. They developed strategies to cope with the difficulties and succeed at the university. The present study also revealed that the participants’experiential backgrounds played a crucial role in their perceptions of their own experiences in the U.S. The students acknowledged that there are cultural differences between two countries that were grounded in all findings of the research and those differences affected their attitudes and behaviors throughout the study and their stay in the U.S.
