Leaf-spray in vitro bioassays appraise new aphicidal formulations for managing deleterious plant-feeding aphids. The formulation may utilize alternative and integrated strategies. However, leaf spraying even under controlled conditions may affect aphid reproduction and mortality. This study examines leaf spray applications for optimum and reproducible aphicidal results using tobacco leaves overlaid on cotton fabric or water agar surfaces. Infestation of the undersides of tobacco leaves with nymphs of green peach aphids was used in the assays. Spray distance and volume were optimized using water-sensitive paper to ascertain the best surface coverage. Overlays of the leaves on water agar caused less mortality and greater reproduction than the use of cotton fabric. The relative humidity of the insect-rearing chambers changed with the watering regime for the insect - rearing chambers with cotton fabric; 60% relative humidity was optimal. Relative humidity was not affected by the concentration of agar in the water agar chambers. Applications of the chemical aphicidal standard, Sulfoxaflor, under the optimized conditions exhibited similar times for lethality although the rate was faster with leaves on the cotton fabric than on water agar. These studies establish reproducible and sensitive techniques for assessing the lethality and effects on reproduction of potential aphicidal products.
A genus Cryptaulus Ôhira (Coleoptera: Elateridae) includes 15 species in Palearctic region and two of them, C. berus (Candèze) and C. larvatus pini (Lewis), have been recorded from South Korea. Recently, a rare species of genus, C. yamato (Nakane) which is regarded as endemic to Japan, was newly discovered from Gwangneung forest, South Korea with a DNA barcode sequence (In press). As results of the present study, a complete mitochondrial DNA genome of Cryptalaus yamato (Nakane), is reported for the first time. The genome consists of 15,882 base pairs including 13 protein coding genes (PCGs), 20 tRNAs, two rRNAs and a 1,279 bp long AT-rich region. The overall base composition is 69.4% AT and 30.6% GC. The maximum likelihood analysis based on nucleotide sequence data of 13 PCGs supported that C. yamato is involved in monophyletic group of Elateridae.
The stick insect fauna of Laos has been poorly studied to date. Only 4 species are recorded from the country: Medauroidea brongniarti (Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1907), Phobaeticus magnus Hennemann & Conle, 2008, Parapachymorpha spiniger (Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1907), Sipyloidea sipylus (Westwood, 1859). Assessment of their actual species richness is impeded by various unfavorable circumstances. Their cryptic and immobile lifestyle does not allow for easy trapping and collecting. The aim of this study is to update the taxonomic status of the order Phasmatodea in Laos for the future study.
This study investigates the spatial and temporal variations of moth diversity of Bulgapsan Mountain, Younggwang, Jeonnam. Moth collecting was carried out using a UV light trap at three different sites from February to October 2016 (5 times). A total of 177 moth species and 911 individuals in 17 families were identified. The family Geometridae (51 species and 282 individuals) was the most dominant in the numbers of species and individuals, followed by Erebidae (46 species, 248 individuals), Noctuidae (34 species, 219 individuals) and others. Seasonal change of the number of species and individuals showed a M-shaped pattern with May and July peaks. The Chao 1 estimated number of species using the observed species was 224~326 species, but the graph did not reach an asymptote. Among the surveyed sites, the Neolitsea sericea community showed the highest numbers of species and individuals.
Arctiinae are one of the most species-rich subfamily in the family Erebidae (or classified as family Arctiidae). Around 11.155 species of 750 genera have been described from all over the world (Heppner, 2005) of which 5.931 inhabit the Neotropics (Watson & Goodger, 1986; Heppner, 1991; Scoble, 1995). Taxonomic study of the Arctiinae in Cambodia has been done by a few foreign entomologists. As the results of this study, 182 species of 68 genera are reported on, of which described in recent pages 135 species of 44 genera are reported from Cambodia for the first time, five species are new to science (Bayarsaikhan & Bae, 2015; Bayarsaikhan et al., 2015; Bayarsaikhan & Bae, 2016): Danielithosia wooshini; Stictane cambodiensis; S. khmerensis; S. bokorensis; Cyana angkorensis. The materials for identification are based on the collection of Incheon National University, which were collected from 2009-2015 in Cambodia by Cambodian and Korean researchers.
일반적으로 곤 충은 환경조건에 따라 크게 영향을 받는 것으로 알려져 있 으며(Kim, 1988), 특히, 딱정벌레류의 대부분 곤충들은 서 식지 변화, 하층식생과 낙엽량, 숲의 나이와 토지 조건, 온도 와 습도 변화 등의 환경변화에 매우 민감하여 산림의 형태 에 따라 분포하는 종이 달라지기 때문에 고립된 상태 또는 제한된 공간 내에서 특정 종의 급격한 변화는 그 지역의 환경변화를 반영함으로 기후와 서식지 등의 변화를 분석할 수 있는 환경지표성 곤충으로 인식되고 있다(Thiele, 1977; Maclean et al., 1992; Niemela et al., 1993; Ishitani and Yano, 1994; Butterfield et al., 1995; Ings and Hartley, 1999; Magura et al., 2000; Niemela et al., 2000; Koivula and Niemelä 2002; Melnychuk et al., 2003; Rainio and Niemela, 2003; Argyropoulou et al., 2005; Ohsawa, 2005; Apigian et al., 2006; Avgin, 2006; Sandoval et al., 2007; Žiogas and Vaičikauskas, 2007; Timmetal., 2009; Riley and Browne, 2011).
This study was aimed to investigate the elevational and seasonal variation of moth diversity of Mt. Baegun-san, Gwangyang-city, Jeonnam. Moth collecting was carried out using a UV light trap at three different elevational sites from September to October 2014 and from April to October 2015 (9 times) except winter. A total of 288 moth species and 1,444 individuals in 15 families were identified. Geometridae (97 species and 740 individuals) were the most dominant in the numbers of species and individuals, followed by Noctuidae (62 species, 193 individuals), Erebidae (52 species, 177 individuals) and Notodontidae (16 species, 111 individuals). Elevational change showed that the lower elevation, the higher number of species and individuals. Seasonal change of numbers of species and individuals showed the M-shaped pattern with June and August peaks. Compared to the previous records from historical literatures, 197 species were newly added and the total moth species richness of Mt. Baegun-san comprised 449 species in 20 families. The Chao 2 estimated number of species using the observed species including unpublished data set was 1,530 species that comprised about 43% of the Korean Lepidopteran fauna. This large number of estimated species requested the more extensive and long-term survey for better understanding of the total moth fauna in this area.
The genus Ypsolopha Latreille is the largest taxa in Ypsolophidae, comprising over 140 species worldwide. More than 100 species have been described from the Palaearctic and Oriental Regions. In Korea, 10 species have been listed by Byun et al. (2009), and recently 3 new recorded species were reported by Sohn (2010).
Ypsolopha species have been known feeding on conifers and dicotyledonous plants. But studying of host plants is still not discovered thoroughly.
In the present study, I carried out to breed larvae ofYpsolophid moth based on Japanese study in a laboratory. And reported one newly recorded species from Korea. Also, we provide description of adult, pictures of adults genitalia and a checklist of host plants is also provided.
We present the nearly complete mitogenome sequences of the garden chafer, Polyphylla laticollis manchurica, which is listed as an endangered species in Korea. The P. l. manchurica mitogenome, which includes unfinished whole A+T-rich region and a partial srRNA was 14,473-bp long, possessing typical sets of genes (13 PCGs, 22 tRNA genes, and 2 rRNA genes). Gene arrangement of the P. l. manchurica mitogenome was identical to the common one found in the majority of insects. The 5 bp-long motif sequence (TAGTA) that has been suggested to be the possible binding site for the transcription termination peptide for the major-strand was also found in the P. l. manchurica mitogenome between tRNASer(UCN) and ND1. As has been previously determined, the high A/T content was unanimously observed in P. l. manchurica in terms of A/T bias in the third codon position (73.5%) compared with the first (66.4%) and second codon position (66.2%), and a high frequency of A/T-containing codons (a total of 28.22% for TTA, ATT, TTT, and ATA). The PCGs encoded in major-strands are slightly T-skewed, whereas those of the minor-strand are A-skewed, indicating strand asymmetry in nucleotide composition in the Coleoptera including P. l. manchurica.
Yponomeutoidea are one of the largest superfamily of microlepidoptera, comprising over 1,800 species worldwide. The composition of the superfamily was clarified by Kyrki (1984), who suggested that the monophyly of the group (based on Yponomeuta) was supported by presence of pleural robes on abdominal segment of A8 of the male.
First record of Yponomeutoidea from Korea has performed by K.T. Park in 1983, and then more than 50 species have been recorded up to date.
In the present study, we reviewed of the species of Yponomeutoidea from Korea, with Ypsolopha sp.
The early investigations of Russian Far East Trichoptera is connected with A.V. Martynov (1879-1938) who is recognized as a “Father of Russian Trichopterists”. About hundred species described by Martynov were reported from Russian Far East (RFE). Then, I.M. Levanidova (1914-2005) devoted her life to study caddisflies of Pacific Russia and demonstrated the high biodiversity of Trichoptera fauna for the region. If the list of Russian Trichoptera includes 641 species in 148 genera of 28 families of caddisflies (Ivanov, 2010), the Far East of Russia consists of 435 species of caddis belonging to 103 genera of 26 families, it is about 67,8% of Trichoptera fauna of all Russia (Table). Nevertheless, specialists estimate that the real quantity of species should be much more as the majority of the territory still isn't investigated rather well.
The core of RFE Trichoptera fauna the is represented by species of Palaearhearctic subregion of Palaearctic Region and species distributed in Eastern Palaearctic. Transpalaearctic and Holartic species are presented in much less number. Connection of North Pacific Russia with North America through the ancient Bering Bridge is traced based on caddisfly fauna. The fauna of Kamchatka is comparatively poor in comparison with continental. The fauna of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands reflects, on the one hand, communication with eastern Asian continent, with another ? connection with the territory of the Japanese Archipelago and coastal territories of South-East Asia.
Taxonomic difficulties of East Russia Trichoptera fauna studying is planning to resolve owing to complex investigation of morphology, distribution, genetic characteristics of caddisflies in cooperation with the international teams of trichopterists of USA and countries of East and North East Asia.
Taxonomic list of the families and genera of Trichoptera in Russian Far East (Pacific Russia and Yakutia)
Cimicomorpha is one of the most diverse groups in true bugs comprising more than 20,000 species, which attract a great attention for a variety of life-history strategies as well as for agricultural and medical aspects as followed: traumatic insemination in the bed bugs and their relatives (Cimicoidea), diverse feedinghabits in the plant bugs (Miridae), parasitism and blood-feeding in the bed bugs and their relatives (Cimicidae and Polyctenidae), agricultural pests in the lace bugs and the plant bugs (Tingidae and Miridae), biological control agents in the minute pirate bugs and the plant bugs (e.g., the genus Orius), disease transmission in the Triatominae (Reduviidae), and micro-habitat transitions in the assassin bugs and the flower bugs (Reduviidae and Anthocoridae). In this talk, I conducted the phylogenetic analyses of the Cimicomorpha based on the molecular data. Additionally, through the phylogenetic comparative analyses, I also present the evolutionary history of the specialized biological traits of the Cimicomorpha.
fossil species. It consists of four genera, Caenosclerogibba Yasumatsu, Probethylus Ashmead, Sclerogibba Riggio & De Stefani-Perez and Pterosclerogibba Olmi. Thirteen species of two genera (60% of species worldwide) are known from the Oriental region. However, no species was reported in Cambodia so far. Even though the detailed biology of the sclerogibbids is poorly known, they are ectoparasitoids of the webspinners (Embiidina). From the present study, three species of the family are recognized for the first time from Cambodia: Sclerogibba talpiformis Benoit, S. rapax Olmi and S. impressa Olmi. Diagnoses and photographs for each species are presented.
