The Genus Psectra is a small group of Hemerobiidae, and Psectra diptera is one of the rare and attractive species in this group because of hindwing variation. They are well known to have their hindwing reduced, similar to flies, depending on their habitat environment. We report Genus Psectra and Psectra diptera, new records from Korea. We provide brief descriptions and photos of adults and genitalia.

Age-stage two sex life table was constructed for a predatory lacewing, Chrysoperla carnea feeding on 3 different canola feeding aphids; mealy cabbage aphids, Brevicoryne brassicae (L.), mustard aphid, Lipaphis erysimi (Kaltenbach) and green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer). The experiment was performed under laboratory conditions at 25± 1oC and 65 ± 1% RH. The immature development duration was shortest on M. persicae (17.3 days). While, C. carnea completed its immature developmental period in 21.1 days, which was longest among other, tested aphids. Similarly, survival of C. carnea was higher on feeding M. persicae and lowest on L. erysimi. Female egg laying of predator was also higher on M. persicae, followed by B. brassicae and L. erysimi. These results show that M. persicae favors the quick development and higher reproduction of C. carnea as compared to B. breassicae and L. erysimi. This information is useful in relation to mass rearing of C. carnea and in biological control of canola aphids by using C. carnea.

Hemerobius contumax Tjeder, 1932 is a well known species of Hemerobiidae (Neuroptera) in Europe and Middle East countries, but has never been found in Asia. In Korea, a total of eight hemerobiid species have been recorded including the genus Hemerobius. So far only two species, Hemerobius humulinus and Hemerobius harmandinus are reported. Recently we collected another species of which the specific identity is in question: morphologically very similar to Hemerobius contumax but with c.a. 5% difference in COI barcode sequences. With 5% genetic difference, it may be easily considered as a different species from H. contumax. However, the adult image from the specimen sequenced for H. contumax found in the BOLD site is morphologically slightly off from the usual H. contumax, and there is still an investigation needed to confirm its specific identity. In any case, here we provide a brief description, photos of adult and male genitalia and DNA barcode sequence based the specimen examined.

Biological control of Pseudococcus comstocki (Kuwana) with new indigenous natural enemy (Chrysoperla nipponensis (Okamoto)) was carried out on tropical plant (Trachycarpus fortunei (Hook)) from May to July in 2013. Control experiments were conducted at Tropical Plant Resources Research Center of Korea National Arboretum, Pocheon, Korea. Chrysoperla nipponensis was released once (20 larvae/m2) to control Pseudococcus comstocki on 11st May in 2013. We investigated the density of leaf-feeding P. comstocki at intervals of approximately 7 days after introducing their natural enemy, C. nipponensis. The densities of P. comstocki were suppressed 22.4% (after 4 weeks) and 8.2% (after 6 weeks) after introducing C. nipponensis.

Yellow tea thrip (Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is anthophilous pests of many crops worldwide including five flavor berry. And the mealy bug (Pseudaulacaspis cockerelli (Cooley) (Hemiptera: Diaspididae)) is one of the hardest pests to control. Its body is covered with white waxy threads, which often make a chemical pest control useless. Five flavor berry (Schisandra chinensis Baill) is used in traditional Chinese medicine. So, the development of biological control against the major pest on five flavor berry is of great interest. In this work, a treatment of Chrysoperla nipponensis (Okamoto) was applied to five flavor berry fields infested by P. cockerelli and a treatment of Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot was applied to two types of five flavor berry fields infested by S. dorsalis. Even though our tests found significant differences between the two culturing method(sod culture, nonwoven type mulching), the treatment of biological control agents decreased or a little increased the fruit damage, which was comparable to the chemical insecticide treatment. In the sod culture experiment, thrip population was significantly low and increased at a lower rate than in the nonwoven type mulching. It may be suggested from these results that A. swirskii and C. nipponensis as IPM program and sod culture could be incorporated into the integrated pest management system on five flavor berry.

The family Sisyridae is very unique in that their larvae are aquatic and feed on sponges. The family has not been described in Korea until one species, Sisyra nikkoana (Navas), of Sisyridae was reported in the Illustrated Book of Aquatic Invertebrates in Agricultural Ecosystem (Rural Development Administration, 2008). However, this short description includes a misidentified adult image, and here we provide its full description in morphology with its wing pattern and male genitalia, as well as its COI barcoding information. We suggest its Korean name, 해면풀잠자리(해면풀잠자리과) as they feed on sponges.
