        This study developed a flame-retardant fiber-reinforced composite material that satisfies the required regulations of railway vehicle interior parts for the purpose of reducing weight and simplifying the production process using SMC(sheet molding compounds) composite materials. It is essential to secure flame-retardant performance that minimizes flames and smoke for the safe evacuation of passengers in case of fire for interior parts of railway vehicles. In this study, the resin for SMC was developed by adding various flame retardant materials such as vinyl ester (halogen-based and phosphorus-based) and antimony trioxide, and chopped glass fibers were used as the reinforcing material. As a result of preparing specimens for phosphorus-based and halogen-based SMC materials, and comparing the flame retardant performance, the phosphorus-based SMC material had an oxygen index of 36.1, smoke density (1minute 30 seconds, 4minutes, 10minutes) of 1.7, 51.5, 195.1. It was measured with a toxicity index of 0.05 R and average heat for sustained burning of 4.5MJ/m, which satisfies all the flame retardant standards required for interior parts of railway vehicles, and it was found that most of the performance was better than that of halogen-based SMC.

        This paper deals with the disturbance observer (DOB) based sliding mode control (SMC) for a DC motor to control motor rotating speed precisely and to ensure strong robustness against disturbance including load torque and parameter variation. The reason of steady state error in speed on conventional SMC without DOB is analyzed in detail. Especially, the suggested DOB is designed to prevent measuring noise and harmonics caused by derivative operation on rotating speed. The control performance of the DOB based SMC is evaluated by the various simulations. The simulation results showed that the DOB based SMC had more robust performance than the SMC system without DOB. Especially, precise speed control was possible even though motor parameter variation and load torque was added to the system.

        Mineral filler is used for resin compounds, because it increases the stiffness and thermal stability of a resin compound, and it also cuts down the cost. Calcium carbonate, silica, magnesium oxide, and others are used as filler materials in general, and the type of filler material, the size, and content can affect the physical properties of compounds. Those factors also influence the viscosity of resin mixtures and the workability, and should be adjusted by changing the contents of the filler, which depends on the size. In this study, five kinds of ground calcium carbonate, which were different in size, were used to produce polyester compounds ; the physical properties were compared with the filler size and contents. The mechanical properties were measured by bending strength and tensile strength, and the heat deflection temperature was obtained for thermal stability.

        The floating PV generation structure installed on the surface of water has been recently issued as a representative items for the low carbon and green growth campaign. Moreover, the studies and developments for the structure and construction improvements of floating PV generation structure have been in progress. For example, in the previous research, the floating PV generation structure consisted of pultruded FRP and SMC FRP members is suggested. In this study, we conduct the analytical and experimental studies for estimating the structural characteristics of SMC FRP vertical members. From the analytical and experimental results, it is found that SMC FRP vertical members used for floating PV generation structure have sufficient structural safety and stability.

        The SMC(Sheet molding compound) process is widely used in the automotive industry to produce parts that are large, thin, lightweight, strong and stiff. Compression molded parts are formed by squeezing a glass fiber reinforced UP(Unsaturated Polyester) sheet, known as sheet mold compound(SMC), between two heated cavity surfaces. This paper has performed flow analysis to predict optimization process of low density SMC. After five types of design variables and six types of response variables were defined, DOE(Design of Experiment) and RSM (Response Surface Method) were applied in order to measure sensitivity of design variables and realize optimization through regression model. After design optimization, the total warpage of the SMC is reduced by about 12% compared to the initial design of SMC and cure time, cure temperature, clamping force and flow pressure are decreased by 0.6∼27% in comparison with the initial design. By doing this, the production costs could be diminished.

        SMC(Soft Magnetic Composite) materials which we have newly developed were studied for their applying effects. It shows almost the same motor output power as the laminated Si-steels of 0.35mm in thickness, although core loss of SMC is about 1.5 times that of the laminations. As shown in the results, the SMC motor core is sufficient for real use as a motor core. Furthermore, a 3-D shaped motor core made of SMC can improve approximately 20% of the output compared with the same size motor made of laminations.

        The SMC composite, now being considered in certain structural applications, is anticipated to experience repeated loading during service. Thus, understanding of the fatigue behavior is essential in proper use of the composite material. In this paper, using the SMC composite composed of E-glass chopped strand and unsaturated polyester resin three point bending fatigue tests are carried out to investigate the fatigue crack propagating behavior under various cyclic stresses and fatigue damage of various microcrack forms. The following results are obtained from this study; 1) Most of the total fatigue life of the SMC composite is consumed at the initial extension or the growth of the macroscopic crack. 2) A Paris' type power-law relationship between the crack propagation rate and stress intensity factor range is obtained, and the value of material constant m is much higher (m=9~11)than that of other metals. 3) In case of high cyclic stress the fatigue damage show high microcrack density and short crack length, but in case of low cyclic stress does it vice versa. 4) Fatigue damage is characterized by microcrack density, crack length and distribution of crack orientation.

        This paper aims to developed SMC-Fractional algorithm, that is, enhances the performance of Sliding Mode Control(SMC) algorithm for pounding control of Multi-span bridges using MR-damper. The pounding control performance of SMC-Fractional algorithm has been evaluated in shaking table test on multi-span bridge. As a result of the experiment, the SMC-Fractional algorithm showed the performance od reducing the relative displacement of adjacent spans over other algorithms.

        The water tanks are widely used for the safe storage of potable water, which are installed on either the basement or the top floor inside of the buildings. Therefore, the water tank systems assembled with many unit panels are generally adopted and the rectangular plan water tanks are most popular. To resist the water pressure acting on the side walls of tanks the internally reinforced system using metal tie-bars has been most commonly used. However, many problems related to the lattice internal reinforcement system require the development of the externally reinforced water tank, which does not have any latticed tie bars inside the tank. In this study two different systems have been developed using the external steel frames with either the SMC water tank panels or the PosMAC(coated steel) water tank panels. The experimental tests have been performed under the static hydraulic loadings as well as the seismic loadings through the shaking table test.

        We present the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) analysis on the quasi-periodic modulation of SMC X-1. SMC X-1, consistingof a neutron star and a massive companion, exhibits superorbital modulation with a period varying between ~40 d and ~65 d.We applied the HHT on the light curve observed by the All-Sky Monitor onboard Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) to obtainthe instantaneous frequency of the superorbital modulation of SMC X-1. The resultant Hilbert spectrum is consistent with thedynamic power spectrum while it shows more detailed information in both the time and frequency domains. According to theinstantaneous frequency, we found a correlation between the superorbital period and the modulation amplitude. Combiningthe spectral observation made by the Proportional Counter Array onboard RXTE and the superorbital phase derived in theHHT, we performed a superorbital phase-resolved spectral analysis of SMC X-1. An analysis of the spectral parameters versusthe orbital phase for different superorbital states revealed that the diversity of nH has an orbital dependence. Furthermore,we obtained the variation in the eclipse profiles by folding the All Sky Monitor light curve with orbital period for differentsuperorbital states. A dip feature, similar to the pre-eclipse dip of Her X-1, can be observed only in the superorbital ascendingand descending states, while the width is anti-correlated with the X-ray flux.

        The temporal variations of the suspended material concentration (SMC) during spring-neap tidal cycle was investigated at more than 30 stations in Deukryang Bay, Korea, in 1 and 23 July, 1992. The averaged total SMC in spring tide was two times more than those in neap tide. It can be explained that the strong tidal current in spring tide disturbed bottom waters and induced higher SMC in the bay. The areal distributions of SMC for the surface and the bottom layers in the bay shows much different patterns during spring and neap tidal cycle. We concluded that the vertical stratification intensity of water mass is important factor of the horizonatal distribution of SMC in the bay.
