        Sustainable meal management at home will be affected by the lifestyle of the housewife. This study examined the lifestyle of middle aged women and identified their practice levels of sustainable meal management at home. A total of 438 women, aged 35 to 59, managing the family’s dietary life at home and living in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, Daejeon, and Chonnan area participated in the survey. The middle aged women showed a higher performance level of hygiene-oriented (4.15) and health-oriented dietary life (3.59), but a less convenience-oriented dietary life (2.57). Based on their lifestyle, 3 clusters were extracted: Low-interest dietary life meal manager, health and quality pursuit meal manager, and convenience and eatingout pursuit active meal manager. Among them, the cluster of health and quality pursuit meal manager showed the highest sustainable practices in 7 dimensions of sustainable practices in the home except for the saving practices (p<0.001). The criteria suggested from the study can be applicable to the guidelines of sustainable meal management at home. The study can also be helpful for educators to identify the education themes for improving housewife’s sustainable meal practices, having different lifestyle and sustainable meal practices.

        This study analyzes the images of models in womenswear advertisements targeting women in their fifties. The goals of this study are: 1) to investigate beauty ideals for middle-aged women by analyzing models’ look age, chronological age, wrinkles, gray hair, hair length, body type, and race; and 2) to explore how ageing is dealt with in advertisements by analyzing the range of bodies shown in advertisements, the color mode of photographs, and the clarity of models’ figures in relation to models’ look ages. A total of 155 printed advertisements from January 2012 to January 2017 from the brands Daks Ladies, Lebeige, Luciano Choi, PAT, and Zishen were selected for analysis. Womenswear brands targeting middle-aged women reinforce cultural ideals of female beauty that emphasize youth and slenderness. They do this by using thin and slender models, who most often appear to be in their twenties and thirties, and have hair longer than their shoulders. Brands with higher price ranges show a preference for Caucasian models, which reveals that a Caucasian identity is associated with sophistication. In addition, the bodies of models who appear to be in their forties and fifties were concealed by framing photographs mostly above the knees. Older models’ features were also obscured via the use of black and white photography, strong lighting and contrast, and digital editing that blurred the boundaries between figures and their backgrounds. These decisions for how to represent models could result in negative self-esteem and a denial of the symptoms of ageing among middle-aged women.

        이 연구는 청소년기 자녀를 둔 중년 여성들이 학생상담자원봉사활동 참여 경험을 통해 청소년기 자녀 에 대한 이해 변화와 자기성장을 이루어가는 과정에 대해 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 한 지역의 학생 상담자원봉사협의회에서 4년 이상 봉사활동을 하고 있는 주로 40대에서 50대의 여성 봉사자 9명과 심층 면담을 실시하였다. 먼저, 청소년기 자녀 이해 변화 과정에 대하여 살펴보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학교 현 장의 아이들을 접하면서 이들은 청소년기 아이들에 대해 이해하게 되었다. 둘째, 청소년기 자녀 이해 과정 에서 이들은 자녀의 마음 읽기, 기다려주기 등 공감적 이해를 할 수 있는 계기를 갖게 되었다. 셋째, 상담 봉사 경험을 하게 되면서 자녀 양육태도도 점검하게 되고 부모-자녀관계의 개선을 위해 자신을 변화시키 고 있었다. 넷째, 상담교육과 경험을 통해 얻은 의사소통기술이나 대화법 등의 실제적 적용은 자녀와의 의 사소통에도 긍정적인 영향을 주며 자녀와의 관계 개선에도 기여하고 있었다. 이와 함께 연구 참여자들은 봉사활동 경험을 통하여 자기성장의 의미를 터득하고 있었다. 첫째, 상담 관련 교육을 받고 공부하는 과정 에서 봉사자들은 자기주도 학습 기회를 가지게 되었다. 둘째, 상담 관련 교육과 경험은 자기이해와 자기반 성의 기회를 제공하고 있었다. 셋째, 학생상담봉사활동을 통해 자기만족감, 성취감을 느끼고 있으며, 자아 존중감 향상에도 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 상담봉사활동을 통하여 타인의 관점을 이해하고 존 중할 수 있는 태도도 기르고 있었다. 다섯째, 학생상담자원봉사협의회의 회원으로 함께 활동하며 소속감 과 사회적 지지 향상에 도움을 얻게 되었다.

        Women aged between 36 and 55 are the main players in the cosmetics market in Taiwan in recent years. Particularly, the sector of anti-ageing cosmetics has grown continually with the support of women at the ages, who have stronger purchasing power than others. Furthermore, the changes of the channel structure in Taiwan have an impact on cosmetics consumption. Department stores have been the leaders of the high-end cosmetics market for a long time. Nevertheless, Taiwanese middle-aged women no longer only purchase cosmetics products in the department stores, but also shop around the pharmacy chain stores, like Cosmed, Poya and Watsons, which expand rapidly in Taiwan recently, buying OTC (Over-the-counter) cosmetics brands and products. It is convenient for women to attach with cosmetics products since the widespread shops available for consumers to pop in and consume a wide range of cosmetics products with more affordable prices (Kantar Worldpanel, 2013). The current research examines the cosmetics shopping and consumption of middle-aged women in the Taiwanese cultural context. The phenomenological interviews were conducted with a purposive sampling with 6 Taiwanese middle-aged women ranging in age from 40 to 60, who used cosmetics on a daily basis, varied in duration, between 1 to 2 hours. The sample size is kept deliberately small as phenomenological interviews are designed to elaborate the richness (Baker et al., 1992) of individuals’ lived experiences, feelings and perceptions of cosmetics consumption. Each interview was conducted online using the social media, Skype, through a webcam. The purpose of the interview was described to the informants as an exploration of women’s cosmetics consumption and how it affected their experiences in their daily lives. They were encouraged to share their own experiences freely. The unstructured interviews started with a question, “What comes to your mind when speaking of cosmetics?” enabling participants to start the dialogue with their most familiar topics and be free to define the meanings of cosmetics in their own words (Liu et al., 2012). In the process of data analysis, 6 principal themes emerged to give more explanations in detail of how middle-aged women in Taiwan strategically manipulate cosmetic shopping to construct, maintain, change, and give meanings to the sense of self in transformational levels during their lifetime course. In addition, due to the widespread of pharmacy stores in recent days, it is found that the middle-aged women’s had changed their shopping behaviours in accordance with the change of retail stores. For example, Karen likes to shop around the pharmacy stores looking for open counter brands which are made in Japan and buying products with the signs showing that are ranked number 1, instead of shopping at the department stores, where she used to go. Moreover, Amy also likes to go to the pharmacy stores which are close to where she lives. There are many new-opened stores, such as Cosmed, Watsons, and Poya rapidly expanded in the rural area that make it more convenient for residents to shop in. She also prefers to buy facial cleansing products which are made in Japan and ranked number 1. As the structure of channel and lifestyle have changed with time, consumers’ cosmetics consumption is changing as well. The research finds that wearing cosmetics has become habits for the Taiwanese women aged between 40 and 60 since they have been using cosmetics for more than 20 years. The meaning behind their “used-to habits” with cosmetics is that consumer’s possessions - cosmetics, have become their extended self and being strategically manipulated to accompany them experiencing through every path of their lives, including pursuing their ideal, hoped-for possible selves, escaping from their negative, feared possible selves, managing their relationship with the social self, and developing their past-present-future self within the historical context.

        본 연구의 목적은 컬러명상 프로그램이 중년여성의 기분상태 변화에 미치는 영향을 알아보기 위한 것이다. 연구 참가자는 중년여성들 중 컬러명상 프로그램에 참여하기를 희망하는 45명 표집하여 실험집단 15명, 비교집단 15명, 통제집단 15명으로 배치하였다. 실험집단에 실시한 컬러명상 프로그램은 총 9회기로, 1주에 3회씩 3주에 걸쳐 실시되었고, 각 회기는 60-70분가량으로 진행하였다. 비교집단에 실시한 블루 컬러명상 프로그램은 총 9회기로, 1주에 3회씩 3주에 걸쳐 실시되었고, 각 회기는 60-70분가량으로 진행하였다. 통제집단에는 아무런 처치도 하지 않았다. 본 연구에서 컬러명상 프로그램 실시 전과 후의 기분상태의 변화를 측정하기 위하여 기분상태검사지(POMS: profile of mood states)를 사용하였다. 기분상태 변인의 사후검사 점수의 세 집단 간 비교에서 사전검사 점수를 공변인으로 하는 공변량 분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과, 컬러명상 프로그램이 중년여성들의 기분상태의 전반적인 변화에 가장 긍정적인 효과가 있었고, 집단 간 유의한 차이가 나타났다. 기분상태 하위요인별로 살펴보면, 긴장, 우울, 분노, 피로요인에서 유의한 차이가 나타났다. 그러나 활력, 혼란요인에서는 컬러명상 프로그램을 실시한 집단의 사전-사후검사 변화량이 가장 높게 나타났지만 집단 간에 유의한 차이는 보이지 않았다. 이러한 결과는 컬러명상 프로그램이 전반적인 기분상태 변화에 효과가 있음을 시사한다. 마지막으로 본 연구의 의의와 제한점 및 후속 연구를 위한 제안사항을 논의하였다.

        The apparel industry has recently been recognizing the important target market of middle-aged women. The aim of this study was to examine the anthropometric characteristics of US women of 46 to 65 years of age and identify distinctive body shape characteristics of US middle-aged women. A total of 1915 middle-aged women whose ages ranged from 46 to 65 were selected from the SizeUSA database. The age range was divided into two groups: 46-55 and 56-65. Twenty-four body measurements important for apparel development were chosen. Four factors—Girth Factor, Height Factor, Hip Drop Factor, and Bust Drop Factor—accounted for the US middle-aged women’s body measurements. The body shapes were classified into four body shapes, which were Y-Shape in the overweight range, S-Shape in the overweight range, H-Shape in the overweight range, and the A-Shape in obese range. H-Shape, which was the least-defined waist in relation to the bust and hips with a short height, existed more in older middle-aged women than in younger middle-aged women. Y-Shape, S-Shape, and A-Shape existed more in the group of younger middle-aged women than in the group of older middle-aged women. In addition, compared with the younger middle-aged women, older middle-aged women had narrower shoulders, a larger waist, thinner legs, and a longer distance between side neck to bust point. The findings from the current study may be applied in the apparel industry for developing clothing sizing systems for US middle-aged women.

        The aim of this study was to investigate the change in women’s somatotype with aging. The subjects were 1,123 women aged 40~69. Their anthropometric data were from the 6th Size Korea. The data were analyzed by factor analysis and cluster analysis. Seven factors were extracted: body mass, body length, back shoulder, arm length factor, front interscye factor, body rise factor, and shoulder angle. The upper body types of middle-aged and elderly women were classified into five types: skinny, short stout body type with forward posture, composite, tall & full body type, and short & skinny. The skinny and composite body type appeared more often than the short stout body type in the early 40s of Korean women. Starting in the mid-50s, composite body type was less often found. However, the number of women with short stout body type increased. In the 60s, the number of women with short stout and tall & full body types decreased. These results reveal that the body types of middle-aged and elderly women changed with some pattern with aging. And women in their early 40s, mid-50s, and 60s women had different body shapes and postures.

        본 연구는 신체적, 발달적 변화로 인한 자아정체감의 혼란을 겪고 있는 중년여성에 대한 사진치료의 적용이 심리 치료적 측면에서 어떤 작용을 하는지를 참여여성들의 경험을 중심으로 살펴보고자 하였다. 이에 따라 사진치료 프로 그램 참여 과정에서 일어나는 인식의 변화를 가장 잘 이해할 수 있는 현상학적 연구를 진행하였다. 연구 참여자는 중 년여성으로 총 6 명이며, 자료수집은 2013년 1월부터 2014년 2월까지 진행되었다. 지오르지(Giorgi, 1997)의 현상학적 연구방법 4단계에 따른 자료 분석 결과 총 309개의 의미단위와 6개의 구성요소, 13개의 하위구성요소를 도출하였다. 연구결과 중년기 여성들에게 사진치료 프로그램의 경험은 사진을 매개로 하여 자신의 방어기제를 자연스럽게 해소 하고 사진에 투사된 자신의 무의식을 알아차리며, 자신의 이미지를 직면하는 과정을 통해 중년기의 변화를 포함한 자신의 삶을 수용하여 보다 유연한 태도로 관계와 일상을 영위하게 되었음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 사진은 잠재적인 현 실을 재현하는 유용한 도구로서 욕구를 명료화하여 생활에서의 보다 빠른 선택과 실행으로 이어지도록 도움을 주었 음이 보고되었다. 이와 같이, 사진치료는 사진이라는 매체의 독특한 특성으로 인해 중년기 여성들의 자아정체감의 혼란을 보다 빨리 해소하고 향후 삶을 계획하는 데에 도움을 주는 것으로 나타났다.

        The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of homocysteine and antioxidant nutrients with obesity in Korean middle aged women. The study subjects included were middle-aged obese women (n=36) whose body mass index (BMI) was greater than 25 kg/m2. A total of 36 participants were randomly divided into two groups. They were assigned to either the Nutritional Management and Exercise (NME) program or the Exercise Management (EM) program, which were both conducted for 3 months. We measured serum homocysteine, total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol levels of the participant. We also measured the dietary intakes of antioxidant nutrient, cholesterol, body weight, body mass index, blood pressure, and VO2. At the end of both programs, please confirm this change. It was unclear when these measurements were shown to have decreased. The body weight and BMI of NME group were decreased compared to those of EM group. The serum total cholesterol levels of the participants in NME group were significantly decreased, in contrast to EM group. Also, serum homocysteine levels of NME group participants were decreased compared to EM group, but the difference was not statistically significant. In the NME group, there were significant differences in the change of dietary cholesterol and vitamin C intake. These results showed that participating NME program will continuously promote the healthy status of the middle aged obese women, compared to participating only in the EM program.

        본 연구는 안전하면서 효율적으로 비만을 개선시키는데 도움이 될 수 있는 식품소재로 목이버섯을 선정하여 복부비만이 있는 중년 여성의 골밀도 및 혈청지질농도에 미치는 영향에 대하여 알아보고자 하였다. 30~50대의 복부비만 여성 30명에게 4주 동안 대조군은 목이버섯을 섭취시키지 않았고, 실험군은 목이버섯을 식사와 함께 섭취하도록 하였다. 실험 전 후 골밀도(T-score, Z-score), 총 콜레스테롤, HDL-콜레스테롤, LDL-콜레스테롤, 중성지방을 측정하였다. 연구결과, 목이버섯 섭취군과 대조군 간에 T-score와 Z-score는 유의한 차이를 보이지 않았지만, 목이버섯 섭취군의 혈청 총 콜레스테롤, LDL-콜레스테롤 및 중성지방 수준이 대조군에 비해 유의하게 소되었다.

        This study is to classify the shape of the body by means of the drop value of the middle-age women. Drop value is based on the circumstances of the body deciding the dimentions of the clothes. Therefore, the study based on the drop value seems to decided the measurement of the clothes in making mass production of ready made clothes. In order to put measure items on this study of the value on 'The fifth survey of body measure of Korean', select 785 people in middle-aged women aged from 40 to 59. And considering the characteristic of upper-drop and lower-drop, and swelling belly by accumulated fat, selected five items(Bust Circumstance - Waist Circumstance, Hip Circumstance - Waist Circumstance, Hip Circumstance - Bust Circumstance, Waist Circumstance(Omphalion) - Waist Circumstance, Hip Circumstance - Waist Circumstance(Omphalion)). The result of the study is summarized as follows. Type 1, M type of the body showed the distribution of 32.5% and belonged to low body development style. The line of human body is the nearest of the four bodies in middle-age woman out of whole shapes of 4 types and the line of human body is close to middle-age woman. Type 2, X type of the body showed the distribution of 40.8% and the line of human body remarkably showed. Type 3, H type of the body showed the distribution of 12.4% and the line of human body appears least. This group was larger than any other group in having more fat in the belly above the circumstance of the hip than other groups. Type 4, Y type of the body showed the distribution of 14.4%. This type was upper half of body development style, waist was slender, and there was seldom the bend around the circumstance of belly and hip.

        This study was conducted to investigate bone density and food behavior of middle-aged (〈65-years-of-age) and oldaged women (≥65-years-of-age) in the Seoul area of Korea. Average height and weight, body mass index, body fat percentage, and waist-hip ration (WHR) of the middle-aged participants were 158.0 cm, 58.4 kg, 23.3, 29.7%, and 0.88. Corresponding measurements for old-aged participants were 152.6 cm, 56.3 kg, 24.1, 33.1%, and 0.93. T- and Z-scores for middle-aged women were -1.20 and -0.21, and those of old-aged women were -2.02 and -0.49. Osteopenia and osteoporosis percentage of middle- and old-aged women were 41.2% and 14.7%, and 45.2% and 37.1%, respectively. Significant differences were evident concerning between-meal, overeating, exercise, and nutritional supplementation among the two groups. Middle-aged women displayed a positive relationships between bone density and the parameters of height (p〈0.05), weight (p〈0.05), exercise (p〈0.05), consumption of soybean and soybean-processed food (p〈0.05), and negative relationships between bone density and the parameters of WHR (p〈0.001), consumption of meat and meatprocessed food (p〈0.05), and tea drinking (p〈0.05). In old-aged women group, positive relationships were evident for bone density and the parameters of height (p〈0.05), weight (p〈0.05), exercise (p〈0.05), nutritional supplementation (p〈0.05), and consumption of soybean and soybean-processed food (p〈0.05). The results reveal a link between healthy bones and desirable food behavior, indicating the importance of a practical and systematically organized food behavior education program for middle- and old-aged Korean women.

        The principal objective of this study was to assess the bone density and processed food intake behavior of middle-aged and elderly women in the Seoul area. The subjects were assigned to one of the following groups on the basis of BMI: namely, the underweight, normal, and overweight groups. The results are summarized as follows: The average BMI and systolic blood pressure of the three groups were 19.0, 127.3 mmHg; 22.4, 132.8 mmHg; and 26.8, 136.1 mmHg respectively. The BQI and T-scores of the three groups were as follows: 56.6, -2.50; 62.3, -2.22; 66.0, -2.03 respectively. The bone status of the three groups, in terms of the percentage of normal and osteoporosis, were 9.5%, 52.4%; 8.3% 33.0%; and 8.8%, 23.6% respectively. We noted no significant differences in processed food intake (frozen, cold and can processed food, instant and convenience store food, basic side dishes) behavior among the three groups. However, we recorded a negative value between processed food intake and bone density (BQI, T-score, %young adult, Z-score, %age-matched) generally. In particular, ramyeon (r=-0.1574, p<0.05) and cup-ramyeon (r=-0.1996, p<0.05) intake were significantly associated with the T-scores of bone density levels. The results of this study revealed that processed food intake was not generally desirable for healthy bone. Thus, practically and systematically organized education regarding a good and healthy dietary life is highly recommended.

        The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of resting periods between exercise sets during isokinetic contraction on recovery from muscle fatigue, strength, heart rate, blood pressure, and lactate level. Sixteen women performed 10 repetitions of isokinetic exercise for three sets in three different conditions. During the sets, they rested 50, 100, and 150 seconds in each condition. And the results were: 1) In this population, the peak torque of extensor during the isokinetic exercise in 100 second resting condition was significantly higher than that in 50 and 150 second resting conditions (p<.01). The total work of extensor was significant in the second and third sets in 50 and 100 second resting conditions (p<.01). 2) During the isokinetic exercise, the heart rate was progressively increased as the sets were advanced in all resting conditions (p<.01). And the increase was significant during the second and third sets than the first in 50 second resting condition (p<.01), while it was significantly greater after the third set than the first in 100 and 150 second resting conditions (p<.01). 4) No difference was found between the resting periods in blood lactate level and blood pressure during the isokinetic exercise. However, differences were found between the sets in these variables (p<.01).
