Copper hexacyanoferrate (Cu-HCF), which is a type of Prussian Blue analogue (PBA), possesses a specific lattice structure that allows it to selectively and effectively adsorb cesium with a high capacity. However, its powdery form presents difficulties in terms of recovery when introduced into aqueous environments, and its dispersion in water has the potential to impede sunlight penetration, possibly affecting aquatic ecosystems. To address this, sponge-type aluminum oxide, referred to as alumina foam (AF), was employed as a supporting material. The synthesis was achieved through a dip-coating method, involving the coating of aluminum oxide foam with copper oxide, followed by a reaction with potassium hexacyanoferrate (KHCF), resulting in the in-situ formation of Cu-HCF. Notably, Copper oxide remained chemically stable, which led to the application of 1, 3, 5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3BTC) to facilitate its conversion into Cu-HCF. This was necessary to ensure the proper transformation of copper oxide into Cu-HCF on the AF in the presence of KHCF. The synthesis of Cu-HCF from copper oxide using H3BTC was verified through X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The manufactured adsorbent material, referred to as AF@CuHCF, was characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). These analyses revealed the presence of the characteristic C≡N bond at 2,100 cm-1, confirming the existence of Cu-HCF within the AF@CuHCF, accounting for approximately 3.24% of its composition. AF@CuHCF exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 34.74 mg/g and demonstrated selective cesium adsorption even in the presence of competing ions such as Na+, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+. Consequently, AF@CuHCF effectively validated its capabilities to selectively and efficiently adsorb cesium from Cs-contaminating wastewater.

The operation of nuclear facilities involves the potential for on-site contamination of soil, primarily resulting from pipe leaks and other operational incidents. Globally, decommissioning process for commercial nuclear power plants have revealed huge-amounts of soil waste contaminated with Cs-137, Sr-90, Co-60, and H-3. For example, Connecticut Yankee in the United States produced approximately 52,800 ton of contaminated soil waste, constituting 10% of the total waste generated during its decommissioning. Environmental remediation costs associated with nuclear decommissioning in the US averaged $60 million per unit, representing a significant 10% of the whole decommissioning expenses. Consequently, this study undertook a preliminary investigation to identify important factors for establishing a site remediation strategy based on radionuclide- and site-specific media- characteristics, focusing the efficiency enhancement for the environmental remediation. The factors considered for this investigation were categorized into physical/environmental, socioeconomic, technical, and management aspects. Physical/environmental factors contained the site characteristics, contamination levels, and environmental sensitivity, while socio-economic factors included the social concerns and economic costs. Technical and management factors included subcategories such as technical considerations, policy aspects, and management factors. Especially, technical factors were further subdivided to consider the site reuse potential, secondary waste generation by site remediation, remediation efficiency, and remediation time. Additionally, our study focused the key factors that facilitate the systematic planning for the site remediation, considering the distribution coefficient (Kd) and hydrogeological characteristics associated with each radionuclide in specific site conditions. Therefore, key factors in this study focus the geochemical characteristics of site media including the particle size distribution, chemical composition, organic and inorganic constituents, and soil moisture content. Moreover, the adsorption properties of site media were examined concerning the distribution coefficient (Kd) of radionuclides and their migration characteristics. Furthermore, this study supported the development of a conceptual framework, containing the remediation strategies that incorporate the mobility of radionuclides, according to the site-specific media. This conceptual framework would necessitate the spatial analysis techniques involving the whole contamination surveys and radionuclide mobility modeling data. By integrating these key factors, the study provides the selection and simulation of optimal remediation methods, ultimately offering the estimated amounts of radioactive waste and its disposal costs. Therefore, these key factors offer foundational insights for designing the site remediation strategies according the sitespecific information such as the distribution coefficient (Kd) and hydrogeological characteristics.

General phases in the plan and implementation of an environmental remediation of radioactively contaminated sites are planning for remediation, site characterization, remediation criteria, remediation strategy, implementing remediation actions, and conducting post-remediation activities. Environmental remediation should commence with a planning stage. It is helpful to prepare reports which detail all the supporting activities related to these elements before significant levels of funds and efforts are committed. Site characterization is needed to provide sufficient data to make strategic decisions on the environmental remediation activities. The source characterization should include both waste characterization and facility or site characterization and should provide reliable estimates of the release rates of radioactive constituents as well as constituent distribution. During the preliminary site characterization, an engineering study should be conducted to develop remediation options which address the specific contaminant problem and are aimed to reduce radiological and chemical exposure. Options will include engineering approaches and associated technologies. A preliminary selection of options may be made based on several factors including future sites use, technical considerations, public acceptability, cost, and regulatory requirements. The implementation of remediation actions includes procurement of the selected technology, preparation of the site, development of a health and safety plan, development of operations procedures, staff selection and training, completion of site cleanup, verification, waste disposal, and release of the site for any future use. Once remediation activities have been completed and verified, the remediated site can be released for restricted or unrestricted use. Remediation of radioactively contaminated sites may require special adaptation to address sites covering very large surface areas or those which are deep and difficult to access. Quality assurance may be very important to the verification of environmental remediation activities. The selection of optimal remediation technologies to solve or mitigate the safety of an environmental contamination problem should be taken into account several factors. The several factors include performance (the ability of the technology to reduce risk to the health and safety of the public and to the environment), reliability and maintenance requirements for the technology, costs of implementing the technology, infrastructure available to support the technology, availability(the ease of accessing the technology and associated services), risk to workers and public safety, environmental impacts of the technology, ability of the technology to meet regulatory acceptance, and communication of stakeholder.

The need for high-performance environmental remediation has increased due to the environment’s ongoing degradation in the form of significant growth in industrialization and urbanization. Therefore, the toxic heavy metals can easily enter into environmental as well as foods and thus the search of clean water for drinking, household and irrigation purposes is of crucial importance. To meet this challenge, microelectrodes are flexible, low-cost and easier for fabrication has become the strong role in the detection of heavy metals with high sensitivity towards higher adsorption of heavy metals from contaminated water. To improve the sensitivity of the microelectrodes, carbon-based microelectrodes decorated with nanomaterials have been explored for the detection of metal ions thereby their presence in trace levels can be estimated. The aim of the present review is to summarize the recent developments in carbon-based microelectrodes for the electrochemical determination of heavy metals. It is followed by the various nanomaterials decorated on the carbon microelectrodes for detection of heavy metals was systematically discussed. Finally, the application and the future perspectives in the development of smart electrochemical sensing is provided. This short review will provide the useful information for the recent development in microelectrodes and also guide the pathway for the detection of heavy metals.

Kori-1 and Wolseong-1 nuclear power plants were permanently shut down in June 2017 and December 2019, and are currently in the preparation stage for decommissioning. In this regard, it is necessary to secure nuclear power plant decommissioning capacity in preparation for the domestic decommissioning marketplace. To address this, the Korea Research Institute of Decommissioning (KRID) was established to build a framework for the development of integrated nuclear decommissioning technology to support the nuclear decommissioning industry. The institute is currently under construction in the Busan-Ulsan border area, and a branch is planned to be established in the Gyeongju area. Recently, R&D projects have been launched to develop equipment for the demonstration and support verification of decommissioning technology. As part of the R&D project titled “Development and demonstration of the system for radioactivity measurement at the decommissioning site of a nuclear power plant”, we introduce the plan to develop a radioactivity measurement system at the decommissioning site and establish a demonstration system. The tasks include (1) measurement of soil radioactive contamination and classification system, (2) visualization system for massive dismantling of nuclear facilities, (3) automatic remote measurement equipment for surface contamination, and (4) bulk clearance verification equipment. The final goal is to develop a real-time measurement and classification system for contaminated soil at the decommissioning site, and to establish a demonstration system for nuclear power plant decommissioning. The KRID aims to contribute and support the technological independence and commercialization for domestic decommissioning sites remediation of nuclear power plant decommissioning site by establishing a field applicability evaluation system for the environmental remediation technology and equipment demonstration.

The ability to both assay the presence of, and to selectively remove ions in a solution is an important tool for waste water treatment in many industrial sectors, especially the nuclear industry. Nuclear waste streams contain high concentrations of heavy metals ions and radionuclides, which are extremely toxic and harmful to the environment, wildlife and humans. For the UK nuclear industry alone, it is estimated that there will be 4.9 million metric tonnes of radioactive waste by 2125, which contains a significant number of toxic radionuclides and heavy metals. This is exacerbated further by increased international growth of nuclear new build and decommissioning. Efforts to remove radionuclides have been focused on the development and optimisation of current separation and sequestering techniques as well as new technologies. Due to the large volumes of waste the techniques must be economical, simple to use and highly efficient in application. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) offer a powerful enhancement of normal ion exchange materials in that they can be navigated to specific places using external magnetic fields and hence can be used to investigate challenges such as, pipework in preparation of decommissioning projects. They also have the potential to be fine-tuned to extract a variety of other radionuclides and toxic heavy metals. It has been demonstrated that with the right functional groups these particles become very strongly selective to radionuclides, such as Uranium. However, this new technology also has the potential to effectively aid nuclear waste remediation at a low cost for the separation of both radionuclides and heavy metals. In this work, we investigate the origin of the selectivity of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) to Uranium by making systematic changes to the existing surface chemistry and determining how these changes influence the selectivity. Identifying the mechanism by which selected common nuclear related metals, such as Na(I), K(I), Cs(I), Ca(II), Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cd(II), Mg(II), Sr(II), Pb(II), Al(III), Mn(II), Eu(III) and Fe(III), are sorbed will allow for specific NP-target (nanoparticle) ion interactions to be revealed. Ultimately this understanding will provide guidance in the design of new targeted NP-ligand constructs for other environmental systems.

The goal of the decommissioning of nuclear facilities is to remove the regulations from the Nuclear Safety Act. The media that can be considered at the time of remediation stage may usually include soils, buildings, and underground materials. In addition, underground materials may largely be the groundwater, buried pipes, and concrete structures. In fact, it can be seen that calculations of the Derived Concentration Guideline Level (DCGL) and ALARA action levels was conducted in the case of overseas decommissioning experiences of Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs). Therefore, the aim of this study is to review the remediation activities and scenarios applied for the calculation of ALARA action level from the overseas decommissioned nuclear power plants. Media that can be considered for DCGL calculation at the time of license termination may differ from site to site. If the DCGL for the target media was derived, whether additional remediation actions are required under the DCGL value from the ALARA perspective was identified by calculating the ALARA action levels in the case of the U.S. The activities to determine whether additional clean-up is justified under the regulatory criteria are remediation actions which is dependent on the material contaminated. Therefore, the typical materials that can be subjected to remediation are soils and structure basements in the overseas cases. Remediation actions involved in the decommissioning process on the structure surfaces can be typically considered to be scabbling, shaving, needle guns, chipping, sponge and abrasive blasting, pressure washing, washing and wiping, grit blasting, and removal of contaminated concrete. For the cost-benefit analysis of the media subject to DCGL calculation, it is necessary to assume a scenario for the remediation actions of the target media. The scenarios can be largely divided into two types. Those are basement fill and building occupancy scenario. In basement fill mode, buildings and structures on the site are removed, and the effect of receptors from the contamination of the remaining structures is considered. In the building occupancy mode, it is assumed that the standing building remains on the site after the remediation stage. It is a situation to evaluate how the effect of additional remediation actions changes as the receptors occupy inside of the contaminated building. Therefore, parameters such as population density, area being evaluated, monetary discount rate, numbers of years, etc. can be set and assessed according to the scenarios.

Trojan Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), a four-loop PWR designed by Westinghouse and owned by Portland General Electric (PGE), reached its initial threshold in 1975 and was operational until November 1992. PGE received a Possession Only License from the NRC in May 1993. In 1995, limited decommissioning activities began at the Trojan, including the completion of a large components removal project to remove and dispose of four steam generators and pressurizers from the containment building. In April 1996, the NRC approved a plan to dismantling the Trojan NPP and began more aggressive component removal activities. At the end of 1998, part of the radioactive drainage system began to be removed, and embedded piping decontamination and survey activities began. Trojan NPP has more than 8,840 m of contaminated pipelines throughout the power block. Most of Trojan NPP’s contaminated embedded piping can generally be divided into four categories drainage piping, ventilation ducts, buried process piping, and other items. For the Trojan NPP, the complete removal of contaminated and embedded piping without damaging the building would have significantly increased costs due to the structural considerations of the building and the depth of the embedded pipe. Therefore, Trojan NPP has chosen to conduct the Embedded Pipe Remediation Project (EPRP) to clean and in situ survey of most of the embedded piping to meet the Final Site Survey (FSS) acceptance criteria, with much success. This study provides a discussion of EPRP activities in the Trojan NPP, including classification and characterization of affected piping, modeling of proposed contamination acceptance criteria, and evaluation of various decontamination and survey techniques. It describes the decontamination tools, techniques, and survey equipment and the condition of work and cost estimate costs used in these projects. To identify embedded piping and drains at the Trojan NPP, based on frequent site surveys, plan sketches showing an overview of system flow paths and connections and database were developed to identify drain inputs and headers. This approach effort has been a successful method of remediation and site survey activities. The developed database was a valuable asset to the EPRP and a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) code was assigned to each drains and headers, allowing the embedded piping to be integrated into the decommissioning cost estimation software (Decon. Expert) and schedule, which aided in decommissioning cost estimation. Also, regular database updates made it easy to check the status of the decommissioning project data. The waste system drain at Trojan NPP was heavily contaminated. The goal of the remediation effort is to completely remove all removable contamination and to reduce the fixed contamination below the decided contamination acceptance criteria. Accordingly, Hydrolysis, Media blast, Chemical decontamination and Pipe removal were considered as remediation option. Trojan NPP’s drainage pipe decontamination option did not cause a significant corrosion layer inside the pipe and media blast was chosen as the main method for stainless steel pipe. In particular, the decommissioning owner decontaminates most of the embedded piping in-situ to meet the FSS acceptance criteria for economic feasibility in Trojan NPP. The remaining pipe was filled with grout to prevent leaching and spreading of contamination inside the pipe. In-situ decontamination and survey of most of these contaminated pipes are considered the most cost-effective option.

Forming perceptions and having experiences through digital media is becoming more common than having in-person relationships in digital media environment. This study, which was conducted when Fashion Week transitioned to a digital platform in 2020, focuses on fashion shows that are announced through social media. The purpose of the study is to explore how traditional fashion media change through social media and what their media characteristics are from the perspective of remediation, which has been suggested by Bolter and Grusin (1999) as the logic of change in the new media. The results of the case analysis in this study, based on the definition and logic of remediation outlined through a literature review, are that social media fashion shows are remediated from traditional fashion shows in the manner that they are represented, improved, refashioned, and absorbed. The characteristics of remediation expressed in social-media-based fashion shows were derived from repurposed video content, improved the elements of fashion shows to express the shows in various ways, expanded places within the fashion shows, and decontextualized and visually flattened spatial discontinuity, and from genre transitions and perceptual shifts. Socialmedia- based fashion shows are becoming a tool to renew the fashion experience and views of fashion and strengthen the authenticity of the brand by interacting with the audience, improving on the spatial limitations of traditional fashion shows, and diversifying fashion presentation methods.

Oil spills into ocean or coastal waters can result in significant damage to the environment via pollution of aquatic ecosystems. Absorbents based on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) foams have the capacity to remove minor or major oil spills. However, conventional chemical synthesis of rGO often uses petrochemical precursors, potentially harmful chemicals, and requires special processing conditions that are expensive to maintain. In this work, an alternative cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach suitable for large-scale production of high-quality rGO directly from used cooking sunflower oil is discussed. Thus, produced flaky graphene structures are effective in absorbing used commercial sunflower oil and engine oil, via monolayer physisorption in the case of used sunflower and engine oils facilitated by van der Waals forces, π–π stacking and hydrophobic interactions, π-cation ( H+) stacking and radical scavenging activities. From adsorption kinetic models, first-order kinetics provides a better fit for used sunflower oil adsorption (R2 = 0.9919) and second-order kinetics provides a better fit for engine oil adsorption (R2 = 0.9823). From intra-particle diffusion model, R2 for USO is 0.9788 and EO is 0.9851, which indicates that both used sunflower and engine oils adsorption processes follow an intra-particle diffusion mechanism. This study confirms that waste-derived rGO could be used for environmental remediation.
